Foul trouble and cold shooting late in the 2nd half did us in.
But lots of things to build upon going into next year. I know COVID is a major factor but this is the second year that conditioning might have been a problem for us in the second half of the year after being such a strength for us under Buzz. Wouldn't hurt to take an internal audit on that just to see if we can't improve upon that at all.
Not having someone who can score running point didn't really do us any favors this year. Bede was a great passer and set up a lot of points, but there's a reason why even the Sixers are desperately trying to get Simmons to learn how to shoot. This should be fixed next year with the transfer, but probably worth focusing on in recruiting.
All that said, this team was better than expected this year and ahead of schedule. We aren't supposed to be this good this soon under Young but we are. And the next few years should be better than the last couple, which is exciting. Certainly feels like this is just the beginning of a long and enjoyable journey for VT basketball under Mike Young.

There is no bigger fan of Mike Young than me, and as much as I like Radford and Mutts, their poor jump shooting paired with Bede's lack of shooting makes Cone's absence loom much larger.
But, in the last two losses, the Hokies looked tired. Young didn't go to the bench almost at all in the second half, and barely played N'Gussen and Pemsyl in the first. I really think not playing Ojiako more when he got healthy was a big mistake, and you can add Basimile for a couple minutes a game.

Two minutes, warm body, don't be a problem and use your length. It is a lot less than they asked of him last year, and it could have given some of the guys who were guarding bigger post players a breather.

Here's my thing; when Aluma is doing his disappearing act why not throw Ojiako in for a few minutes to beat around? I think the short rotation was certainly an issue, but I also don't know how the COVID break might have affected that.

Agreed. Seem to run out of gas in the last few games likely due to conditioning and the long layoffs. I thought CMY should have used his bench more in both the UNC game and today. Only complaint I can come up with for CMY. Great hire!!

I definitely think it was strange that a huge part of our success this season seemed to come from trusting players like Bamisile and NGuessan off the bench (and them doing well) for most of the season and then we just completely ignored them in our last few games and lost them all.

There was what seemed like a 4 minute stretch where we had Pemsl and Bede on the floor at the same time with I think Radford, Aluma and Cattoor and it felt like there was NO option to score other than running Cattoor off of all the screens to get a look at a three or asking Radford to go 1 on 3 off the dribble.
With Aluma fading down the stretch of the season we really missed Cone and the automatic offense he could bring.

Sorry guys, on the last 8-2 run in the second, up 6, I had to leave to take my COVID shot. So I missed the rest of the game. I had a glimmer of hope, though. The guy taking temperatures saw my VT hoodie, and said he hoped we would win it today. I told him I wouldn't check the score till I was done.
Someone texted me right when the game ended. Before I was done. You know who you are. π§

I think they've simplified it since that comment from the late 90s. Recipe as I remember it from the late '00s was the main rail liquors (Tequila, Rum, Vodka, Bourbon/Whiskey [I think TOTS's well had Kentucky Gentleman?], Gin, possibly Triple Sec since I can't remember if it was 3 bottles in each hand or 3 in one, two in the other) poured equally over ice to about 3/4 (or often more), then topped with sprite and grenadine (or a red bull, or whatever they used for green rails). Definitely no kahlua since it's not creamy at all nowadays.
They also give out a more "official" recipe (a few friends had it as their signature wedding drink and asked them for it), but it's a bit too "nice" to really be a rail.

Hi Everyone. I will put this to bed for you. I worked at TOTS for a long time and have made countless rails. The rail was modified a couple of times in its history, a few times for taste, another time for speed. (You couldn't taste the difference and we could make them much faster. We figured it was a win for the customer and a win for us.)
You are pretty close here. 6 bottles total. It was 2 bottles each hand, then you pick up the remaining 2 bottles.
Equal Parts: Vodka, White Rum, Gin, Triple Sec, Bourbon, and Blended Whiskey.
Top it off with, Sprite, Sours Mix, Cranberry Juice.
That was the recipe when I left in 2018. And I imagine it's still the same today.

Tequila makes it a Long Island variation. There was tequila in rails in the late 90s. Those rails were the last stop on Around the World on your 21st birthday.

1) I've been critical of people here blaming everything on the refs every game. However, they were ticky tacky today - 4 players fouling out is a lot. And the technical was utter bullshit. Wish Bilas, Farnham, or Dakich were on the call to expose how bad it was.
2) Cattoor started hot then missed a bunch of open shots. Put one or two of them down big boy!
3) I love having a pit bull, but she does not understand that I need a little bit of personal space during VT bball games or The Mandalorian.

My dog is able to sense anxiety, something he doesn't like anyone to express (which is silly he has nothing to have PTSD over, he was born in a loving home and adopted at age 3 months). As you can imagine, watching close sporting events with him in the room ends up with him looking like one of the pups in those Sarah McLachlan SPCA commercials.

My old hound who died the day before the 2019 tourney started had a pretty bad anxiety disorder and would run upstairs when I started yelling during games. Now when I get pumped up, this dog starts jumping on me. Today though, she was laying on top of me and pawing at my face.

I'm frustrated by this loss because we should have won. We led for most of the game and it always felt like we were in control. We just couldn't quite put it away. But that was a hell of a basketball game. We put on a show in the first game of the tournament. I think anyone who watched that game was impressed with Virginia Tech. I'm disappointed but proud and I feel no reason to vent.
I've been vocal about refusing to donate to the Hokie Club until Fuente is gone, but my faith in Mike Young has changed my mind. I'm donating to the basketball program right now and will continue to do so in the future. We'll see about football, but the basketball program certainly deserves our financial support.

I went to a Gators watch party in my Jax Fl local sports bar. At least I got some free beer near the end of the game! We have (potentially) everyone coming back....Next year starts Now!

I have never played basketball, so forgive my ignorance, but I don't understand what a foul is evidently. I understand if you slap a wrist or shove someone during a shot, but I didn't see why Mutts got called on his last foul (or why several others were called, but especially that one). He stood still with his hands up... that giant ogre put up his shot and foul called against Mutts. I don't get it.

Except that many of them DO consider this their fulltime job but they treat it like a side hustle they don't respect. There is no excuse for how bad officials are and yet they get to keep coming back because hardly anyone holds them accountable.

Yeah, the assistant principal at my high school was a college ref and worked the tournament a few times. But still, seems like there should at least be the appearance of a swat toward the shooter to call a foul. Mutts had his arms straight up while dude worked his way around and eventually put up a shot.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
Mutts was moving .. his feet were not set and he actively bodied into the shooter. That's a foul, but it's frequently not called in the post as long the defender stays vertical.
Our main problem was not going to Aluma enough in the post. We got the same kinds of calls when we posted up, but we didn't put their best post guy in position to commit those fouls.

Yea this game result sucked. But a few things that mattered:
1. We missed 50% of our 1st half free throws
2. Aluma needs to learn toughness from aleyne. Aleyne was a stud!
3. There were a few bad ref calls. Especially the lack of push call in 2nd half
4. Mutts and Aluma got schooled in 2nd half. They'll be better next year.
Hokies are in a long haul positive slope development path, the future is solid and bright.

Dude we made the dance with a bunch of JAG's in Youngs second year, nothing to vent about

That loss is directly on Fuente and Cornelsen.
dont kid yourself. Curt Newsome is still at fault.
Look, I'm not saying it cost us the game or anything, but that technical call sucked. Just... don't do that refs.
/vent
That may have been the worst technical foul I've ever seen. Absolutely ridiculous.
After that technical, they played scared of the ref's.

I agree on Bamisile. Still haven't seen enough from Ojiako to know what impact he would have had.

With a Storm brewing we're gonna make a deep run next year. Year 3 starts now.
Now. Let's go OHIO U
You mean Year -1, right? (Is that how this works Whit?)
Edit: Alum TKPing like a Pro
No that would be year -1
Good catch!
-2.5
Maybe for football. But that doesn't apply to basketball with the momentum CMY and this team has going.
Although if 1-2 of the 46 RB's step up I think this years team will be a surprise.
This aged well.

Anyone have a copycat recipe for a TOTS rail? I don't want to feel my feelings please.
Find all the liquor in your house, mix together and add ice.

...actually hopefully I won't be able to report back.
I made a couple pretty good ones at my old bar but I don't have that recipe saved on my phone anymore

Damn, never realized there was no tequila! That sounds like the rails I was used to from 2011 on or so, appreciate it!

Oral Roberts holy cow. Just when it couldn't hurt any more
Son of a bitch, ORU beat THE OSU
I have 3 vents

If you had told me early in the game that 4 Gators were going to foul out I wouldn't have been surprised at all.

Unreal that OSU lost. Makes this one sting that much more.
I'm on the Oral Roberts bandwagon now! Let's GO Golden Eagles!
Today reminded me of the good old days of Charlie Moir. Good teams but shit the bed at the dance.

College refs are not full time refs so they're bad.

Neither of our kids, both UF alums, have had the nerve to text their old man yet, lol!
update: My daughter called...essentially, "sorry, not sorry", lol
ACC is off to a great start. But at least we lost to a worthy opponent, from a fine SEC University.
