Remember folks, we're steering clear of 247 embeds, but a link is very useful (you can just copy/paste the link into the body of the comment and it will work).
we are still encouraging tweet embeds as it is the easiest way to communicate that info
Not sure if anyone seen it yet. We just picked up a transfer from UMASS. Jared Cole. Im sure he has to sit a yr.
Love it for the kid, but how many 5'9" 180lb slot guys do we have on the roster now? I hope he contributes, but I just don't think all of the guys in that role could even possibly get near the field.
listed as a running back, seemingly gave up scholarship money at UMass to be a PWO at Tech
Wife went to UMass grad school. I went to VT undergrad. I can see me getting some zings in with her at dinner over people wanting to get out if UMass and get to VT so badly that they are willing to give up scholarships just to be Hokies.
Wow! One things for sure. He is coming to work hard.
he does not have to sit a year due to NCAA stance on covid. immediately eligible, has 5 years to play 4.
Im also wondering if Jordan Williams gave the staff a little insight on DK. Liiiiike....
Coach Fu: Does he like Hardees???
J Will: Nah Coach, hes a Dairy Queen😊
Hey - some fun Virginia Tech football family news. As has been mentioned in their original signing thread, the McDonald twins from Salem officially signed today to round out the 2021 scholarship class (barring some transfers potentially - I have no idea what the scholarship situation is like).
But also, a walk-on commitment from PJ Prioleau [https://twitter.com/pjprioleau11/status/1374534497333620739?s=21]!
Evan put a CB for us for Cj McCray transfer out of Marshall
That would be a pretty nice pickup, need more backers for sure.
Good news on the Givens front: after one crystal ball pick for Penn State dropped to 1, the lead Virginia Tech writer on 247 gave him a high CB to VT.
*Edit: Evan G. Watkins & Brian Dohn have put in crystal balls to VT.
Virginia Tech now leads the weighted crystal ball predictions for the Top 100 ranked OL recruit.
these are the vibes we need in the football world. leg to you good sir
Gunner p...........
Not gonna say it
i laughed
Would be nice to get a big In-State target to commit early. Good momentum with him and Sherrod, but would love to see it sooner than later.
Talent like that hasn't been Given to VT in a long time!
Doug Nester
Bro, its a pun.
haha. Doh!
Whats the deal here? Im thrilled he is looking at us, but wondering why the big dogs arent running away with this one. Any insight?
Clemson was the favorite, and if he gets the greenlight I still think he goes there, but they are finnicky about their numbers and have already taken two OT commits for this cycle. By that same vein though, they are always a team to look out for throwing a high rated recruit an official offer late in the cycle if they have room.
Also had bad camps. I think Gunner is a good get but I wouldn't be surprised if he drops to a low 4 star by the time it's all said and done
Yeah, lots of guys look the part as sophomores and then spend the remainder of their recruiting class cycle steadily dropping. Some guys breakout as juniors or seniors and steadily/aggressively rise.
Kinda hope that doesn't happen or Clemson would hop back on the train and land him
Assuming Clemson doesn't enter back into the mix what are the odds we land him?
High
Well if he commits to VT, his ranking dropping is just kind of tradition at this point
I know this is a joke, but I don't really subscribe to this stuff. Givens is already dropping after poor camp performances. He will likely continue to drop whether he commits to us or not.
One of the big "bama bumps" of the 2020 class was OLB/DE prospect Will Anderson, who was bumped up to a 5* and near the top overall prospect discussion after his senior film was released late in the cycle. People cried "BAMA BUMP!!" "IT'S ALL FOR SUBSCRIPTIONS!!" despite the fact that his senior film was one of the most absurd things I've ever seen for an edge rusher.
Fast forward to the end of the 2020 season, Will Anderson started for Alabama at EDGE from day one, led the SEC in QB pressures, led all freshmen in QB pressures by over 30, and finished with 7 sacks, 10.5 TFL.
Prospect rating drops happens to Bama, Clemson, OSU, LSU, and Georgia commits too. Albeit less often. Sometimes they pass on guys who were super highly rated as sophomores and by the time signing day comes around their rankings have dropped, and they end up at lower tier schools because they genuinely weren't takes anymore.
right, and VT players have gotten bumps on 247 too. not from a low-mid 3* to 4/5* but it's happened with going from low to mid 3* and mid to high 3*. People just don't get as hyped about that
Yep, a class that comes to mind is the 2019 class. I'm pretty sure Pinckney, TayRob, and King were all late cycle bumps to 4*.
Holy crap, that was a heck of a highlight reel
I do think the good news on the Givens front (r.e. bad camps) is that, from what I read, he was playing out of position and trying to make it as a defensive tackle. Considering he started his high school career at a tight end, moved to offensive line, and was rated on pure athleticism and potential as a sophomore - then tries to move to the other side of the line... I can see how he might do poorly.
However, all that said, I think he could be an elite, big nasty for Vance Vice, and would absolutely love to see him in Blacksburg.
You had me at "...he started out as a tight end..." Natural fit!
This was not a lie, my god.
He literally cut through defenders like butter. It looked like he ignored them completely.
I saw this pop up on my Twitter feed this morning. I'm curious if the graphic came from VT Football. If so, did they really just spell Kam's name wrong? Sigh.
Damn Interns😔
I don't care if they have interns helping produce content as long as someone of authority(full time staff who is in charge of social media) is reviewing and approving them for release, then it falls on them.
Fair. So Damn Pete😔
i know we drag our football social media gang a lot, and typically rightly so, but this doesn't look like something they made. holy saturation batman
I also don't think the school on official recruitment stuff can use names like that of nfl players.
Well to be fair... we didn't? /s
Probably not VT - there's a huge '3rd party' market for recruiting graphics. Solid Verbal had a good episode about this last offseason.
I can legit tell y'all it was made by an intern😂
That's quite unfortunate then.
Are you that intern?
Wasn't me👀
Shaggy?
You had one job Primus
I have many tho😔
Our biggest concern with Covil isn't this graphic. He got an offer from Clemson yesterday.
Yep
Story on The Athletic just came out on the guy. At worst he's a walk-on LB that provides leadership to the LB group and gives Tyler a player in the trenches to lean on during the week.
I'll take him. We need depth there anyway
I feel confident we can finish in the top 10
4* WR Dane Key. Will probably end up at Kentucky. Hometown school and dad played there.

Some highlights from DJ Harvey spring football.
He's been great so far as a two way player in this spring season from everything I've read. Nice to finally see some of the highlights from it. There is a lot to be excited about with him.
in case anyone thought Laborn was a viable option, he's gone the JUCO route
A JUCO in KANSAS
Guess he did not mind dropping down a couple of step to the JUCO ranks but balked at stepping down 4 or 5 to get to the University of Kansas' program.
RB no less
I know its not March anymore but I just saw this on 247 and thought it was interesting

On a recruiting note. Why no news of the Offensive Lineman from LBHS committing? Not Givens. Saw it on Twitter days ago.
Hadn't seen anything about a commitment recently. On 247 it shows we have 3 '22 commits

Because he's a walk on.
feel free to share the news when you see it too
CB in for Alex Orji, 3-star dual threat QB out of Texas.
I'm up for an Orji in Blacksburg...I'll see myself out
Trading a Hooker for an Orji, are you?
Sounds like a great team player. Really good in a crowd. Great ball skills.
He can run. His passing is ehhhh
Pretty sure that was an Orji joke....
On 2nd read through yeah probably😂
He has an impressive offer list according to 247: baylor, michigan, nebraska, oklahoma, tcu, texas tech, vandy, and houston
I heard something from a homie. Probably gonna happen tonight Idk
On a scale from "It would make Fireman happy" to "It would make DC happy" how big a thing are we talking here?
It depends honestly😂
The new FireDC scale of happiness. I'm intrigued. Tell me more...
Will need some fine tuning but rating, other offers (needs other p5 offers for DC) will have big impacts, Jacksonville area recruit will get Fireman a little extra happy, in-state is preferred for DC, position will also influence things, DC seems to place a lot of value here (not that he's necessarily wrong) WR/RB are less preferred, while an elite corner/D-end prospect will shoot up the happiness ratings

6 questions:
Is this potential recruit from a state on the East coast?
Are they north or south of the Potomac River?
Are they on the offensive or defensive side of the ball?
Have they been mentioned in this thread?
Are they on the line or a "skill" position player?
How many Hardee's coups did this take?
I'll answer 2 questions. Offense and how y'all feel about #txtovt22?😂
I mean....Orji who got a CB today is on Offense and from Texas
9PM eastern or Central?
9 EST 8 CST
BAG sighting on twitter
RIP BAG... all the good ones are gone.
Alright lads false alarm on tonight but probably in the next couple weeks
Tease.
Hey me and my homie can't help when recuirts be like ehhh I'm gonna wait a little bit longer😂
Can you tell us who it was so we know who we aren't getting?
We probably getting the dude unless a couple coaches who really wants em gets in his ears😂
Experience tells me that when we get hyped for a commit and then get told we might have to wait a few days we wind up getting the short end of that stick.
Cole Nelson did the same thing last year. Just wants a vid
Anyone going to start an April recruiting thread?
If I have learned anything this past year its that time is just a construct
