Any San Antonio Hokies on this board?
My employer just gave me the word this week, and I'll be running a new facility to support our operations in E & W Texas, outside of San Antonio. The town is about 35-40mins south of downtown SA, right off I-35 S.
My division's VP is actually a '08 Chem E Hokie, but he's in Houston.
I'm looking forward to what seems to be a great place to live, with lots of veterans.

Congrats. My wife spent a little time there as (I think) an intern. She liked it a lot and said the people were real friendly. She did not have a car and would almost always have people asking her if she needed a lift when she was walking to/from the store.
Eat at Rudy's. Drink along the Riverwalk. (Don't land a snowmobile in the river.) Eat more Rudy's. Go to Camp Bullis and heckle the Air Force trainees. Day trip to Fredericksburg.
Attaboy, gotta get away from those midwestern winters, your feed is always so depressing lol
I won't miss the winters. Or the wind.
Plus you know, women 🤣
Texas is a huge improvement over Williston, concerning that.
I've lived here in the San Antonio area for the last 13 years or so. About 6 years ago we moved a little North to the Bulverde/Spring Branch area. We are about 30 minutes north of SA.
What town are you actually living in?
Still figuring that part out, but my facility will be in Devine.
Devine area is nice. Small but nice, Hondo is going to be the best nearest town that will have everything. I used to manage a ranch in Divine. Pretty area...if you like to dove hunt you are in about the next best place, only second to Argentina.
I know that is a decent amount away from the border but we are having a hell of a time right now down there, especially on I-35. Lots of stolen vehicles and bail outs on the north side of the checkpoints.
Not trying to scare ya but just be big vigilante. Go get your conceal carry if you don't have it already.
I love South Texas. It's amazing and we still manage a ranch further south down between Laredo and Hebronville. There are always issues with smuggling, both drugs and humans. It's just a part of life like cactus and rattlesnakes down there. That said, what we are experiencing right now is exponentially more than we have ever seen.
Watch that company truck when you are filling up gas. Keep it locked and just be aware.
Welcome to South Texas!
Though it may not matter in a month or two if we get constitutional carry...
Very true on the on the constitutional deal but you know politics and red tape. Who knows how long it will go into effect.
I'm gonna have to disagree with you and the others about Rudy's though. Not bad, pretty good.... but we have soooooo much better than Rudy's.
Hell, maybe we should even do a VT game watch party sometime and I'll smoke a brisket and ribs.
My wife's parents live in Austin and we spend plenty of time there.
I don't doubt it. But for someone's who's not a local, Rudy's is worth visiting. "Pretty good" for San Anton better than most of the rest of the country.
Can't disagree with that!
Sure there are better places. But I'd rather walk in and out of Rudy's than wait 6 hours for Franklin's. Last time I went to Black's it was a 2 hour wait, and Salt Lick was about the same (I'm not a fan of Salt Lick anyway).
For the cost, number of locations, and convenience, I'll always recommend Rudy's.
And yes, we should have more watch parties in ATX. Last one I went to was for the @OSU game at some bar on Rainey Street, so overall no bueno.
Roger that.
I feel bad for the dude that try's to rob or carjack you as you are the only person I have ever met that has more firearms than me
They're also an excellent investment in precious metals.
This is a telling post. Thnx for that.
Welcome to Texas! I'm up in hippy-dippy Austin, but spend a bunch of time in SA, love it down there.
Also, I'll second @HT-SF on the Rudy's.
The 5 states of Texas. I always loved this because I got a buddy from the pan handle.
Right before I left RVA for the Williston Basin, we had both Publix (a worthy substitute for Ukrops) and Wegmans.
How are these H-E-B supermarkets, I hear so much about?
H‑E‑B is the best grocery store in the universe. The meat section is second to none!
My wife and I miss Publix more than anything since moving to TX... well, maybe the beach. Some Whole Foods will have a deli that can compete, but usually only the really big ones like the flagship store here in Austin.
How/why did you go from RVA to Williston? That's a crazy transition. I can't think of any industry that's in both of those cities.
He transitioned from part time Army Frat Boy Day trader to Oil Tycoon, not much of a change really...
So he chose to go to Williston??
Sometimes you have to go where the monies are man
Oh I know that. I started in the oilfield and left because the outlook/life/likelihood of keeping a job for another year was not good. Just surprised to see someone leave RVA to go into oilfield operations in Williston on their own accord. But money is good, that's for sure. I was about to be sent to either Midland, Texas or the North coast of Alaska when I left.
I was expecting to go to Midland next, and lucked out.
VT needs its T. Boone Pickens.
I was looking to do something different, and wanted to be back in the field. Someone from my church back in RVA referred me to his nephew up here, and the rest is history.
Lived in Corpus for years, office based out of San Anton. Love the town. Make sure to go west, try Bourne and the foothills. Beautiful country. Bandera and Fredericksburg are also some quaint nearby communities worth visiting. If they host the rock and roll half marathon in the spring, it's a fun run all through downtown San Antonio. The community has a large Hispanic influence, so welcoming and festive. You'll love it down there!
We're up in East TX, if ever passing through, always happy to befriend another Hokie.
My first construction project out of VT was in SA at Ft. Sam. Lived just North of base. Can't give you any pointers on establishments as I'm sure they've changed in 11 years, but if you have a motorcycle, the hill country to the North is some of the best riding in the country. Roads are in great shape, well marked, and great joints on the side of the road to stop for food. The riverwalk had some good food but was a little touristy for me and the downtown section didn't feel very "city-like" to me, just a little more built up. I think the term urban sprawl captures SA perfectly.
HEB was a pretty good grocery when I was there, but like every other store, there are good ones and meh ones. Just like BBurg with the nice Kroger and the student Kroger.
Its Gucci and Ghetto Kroger.

Duly noted...it won't happen again
I become a resident of Texas and San Antonio on 01JUN21. Got a pretty good commute. Will be not too far away from Lackland AFB.
Thanks for y'all's input, and hope to meet some of you Hokies in the area!
Well, an early welcome to ya!
If you want to commemorate the event, consider getting a Texas flag flown over the Texas Capitol building on June 1st (gotta order soon): https://flags.house.texas.gov/Home
Send me your Venmo or PayPal and I'll cover the cost.
I'm loving it here in Texas, thus far. When not in STX, my employer has had me in Midland (for 2 weeks) and Tyler.
So far, I've explored the Hill Country and River Walk. Hope to see Corpus next.
Hope you get to go out to the rose festival in Tyler some time! My favorite event of my hometown.
Wish I got to checkout Stanley's BBQ there, but didn't have time
I live in SA . BBQ in SA lots of spots I saw few mentions of Rudy's , it's ok but you can do much better . My favorite is 2M. It gets busy and they sell out .
Rudy's is an overrated chain.
Riverwalk is great.
San Marcos is a decent shopping town, and has Tx State there.
The Evil Empire is about 90 minutes away. Steer clear.
Houston is a decent destination for any major sport you want to see. Including the beat down of the Hoos coming this November.
Rudy's is fine. Pluckers is the place to be for chicken wings.
Whataburger is a blessing.
I can't believe nobody mentioned Buc-ee's yet (If I didn't miss it in my quick read of the thread). Gotta check out one of those 66,000 sqft "convenience stores". Went to my first one on a recent trip thru I-95 neat St. Augustine in FL. The Texas-sized scale to everything was almost stupefying.
A neighbor mentioned them last night. Apparent they make excellent sammiches.
I'd like to get a VT Belt Buckle. Are there any shops in the area that might carry them?
Today, I close on my first home purchase in Texas. I see myself staying in the area for the duration. Texas is everything I hoped for, and then some!
With that being said, Go Braves, down with the Astros!
BL meat Texas!
Congrats . What part of SA?
Yes sir!
Welcome to TX!!
