I'll be in town this weekend and around the facilities on Friday. Not sure if any of the kids will be there but is there anything you want me to tweet at them IRL?

jk jk......unless......

Merryman looks nice, the weight room looks amazing, the little robot paint striper is geeky cool, the offensive linemen look freaking massive, there was (what I assume) a camp for high school kids looking for a scholarship today inside lane. Bathrooms in lane all getting remodeled. Beautiful weekend to host recruits. They had 3 or 4 of those golf boxes set up in the student bleachers. Great to be back on campus after about 4 years. Go Hokies!

Today has been a busy day in Blacksburg. Don't want to slow the thread down with all the posts of kids there in uniforms but thought that was really cool by the recruiting staff to set up.

Wet stuff on the red stuff.

I have never wanted to hit a golf ball off of bleachers at targets in Lane Stadium so badly.

The Reds have a day where season ticket holders get to take three pitches from a pitching machine and get your tickets for free if you can hit a dinger. Let the season ticket holders hit 3 balls from the NEZ bleachers at Fan Appreciation Day and if they can hole it at the 50 yd line, season tickets are free.

This thread is very quiet for such a big weekend on campus

I think we just need to be patient - no inside knowledge or anything, but wouldn't it make sense for announcements to come as players' visits end? Why take time out of the visit to line up all the social media posts and edits when you can hang out and all that stuff...

Let the players make their announcements on their terms. Twitter was abuzz with a possible flip, but the player may not announce for awhile.

As far as commits, I got a coworker who was there with his son telling me at least 2 players gave the coaches a commitment, but again, let the players make their announcements.

WVU Twitter was riled up because apparently Corbin Page (2022, high 3 star TE), who committed to them in December, had tweeted and then deleted a flip to us. Twitter bio still says WVU commit though.

Maybe they ALL verbally committed!

The big thing going for us with Page is his father played under Beamer at VT in the '80s.

It's also, the first weekend for recruits to visit any campuses officially, so even if they're leaning to Tech, unless they're 100% sure, they're probably going to want to make other visits to be sure.

We have gotten and been getting more crystal balls in the lead up to, and after this opening week of visits/OV weekend. I think we just need to be patient. Kids are probably flying high after each of these visits given how long the dead period has been, but many of them have set up a lot of visits, which I think they are more than justified in taking all of them. It seems like we have a lot of positive momentum (publicly) with 5-6 guys right now. There are always more we are working on in the background.

That said, here's an exciting development from a priority DL target who took his OV to Blacksburg this weekend....

JK. Double post.

Karon Prunty, a 2020 Kansas commit and freshman All-American at cornerback is in the portal. He's from Portsmouth and was getting crystal balls to VT after decommitting from Liberty.

Might be a little difficult to bring him in after his last season, but I'd love to see us give him another shot.

My understanding is that he would have been on our team last year if we didn't fire Zohn right before he committed/signed. I'm not sure if that was short or long term damage though.

Short term - firing his primary recruiter before signing day, but no legitimate bad blood. This was a very reasonable response from Prunty imo if this is the case.

Long term - firing his primary recruiter before signing day, burning a bridge and creating bad blood due to loyalty to Zohn.

The former, we probably have a shot at getting him through the portal. The latter and we shouldn't get our hopes up.

Nick Campbell, DL from Lake Minneola (FL) had a VT offer, committed to NC State after visit this weekend. Not sure how hard VT was recruiting but I liked his potential

I'm very surprised he doesn't have more offers based on his size and film. He had 24 sacks as a soph. Is it the VT connection making other schools assume he's coming here? I'm a huge fan of all 3 of the 804 DL that just visited. The guy that I love the most from this past weekend visitors is Cam Miller (Jacksonville, FL), his tape gives me those Caleb Farley vibes. Two questions I have for you and your plugs. Do we have any shot with Sherrod Covil? Where do we stand with Northern Neck VA prospects Demond Claiborne ('22 RB) and Cam Seldon ('23 WR). Both of them have blown up recently and we've offered both.

There's no glory in practice and lifting but without practice and lifting, there will be no glory!

Claiborne is from King William County which is not in the Northern Neck. Seldon is from Northumberland Co. in the Neck. Nice to see a NN'er get some looks. He has some interesting measurables on his Hudl.

Luke McCaffrey (son of Ed, brother of Christian) is in the transfer portal (again) after a week at Louisville:

"Started working out Wednesday with the team, and then after the week, those three or four days, decided this wasn't the place for him," Satterfield told ESPN Louisville. "His big thing that he wanted to do was come in and play and be a starting quarterback, and I guess after three or four days decided that maybe wasn't going to happen here.

Link Here

VT probably wouldn't be the best fit for him with BB as an entrenched starter but could be a good fit if he's willing to wait.

This type of quick exit is probably the best argument against an unrestricted portal. Was it due to lack of transparency/due diligence? Maybe it was the energy around the program/town/school that was the bigger issue. If it's a depth chart problem, isn't the saying for backups, "You're only an injury away from being the starter"?

If this guy is on my radar as a coach, I'm asking a lot of questions about this situation before I take him over another potential transfer.

Or lack of visits for this particular recruiting class, never really got a feel for the program he decided to attend. This is something TKP user Chris has mentioned will be happening over the next 6 months since this class had to deal with COVID restrictions. You might see a ton of transfers next season or the middle of the season.

TKPhi Damn Proud

nah, reading between the lines of what satterfield said, he doesn't want to work for what he gets, & wants everything handed to him. in private, i bet satterfield would say he has no work ethic, and stay away from him.

Satterfield should have said nothing - just "we wish him the best"

It's also possible that McCaffrey got there after being sold a vision by the coaches, and then realized things weren't as promised. Let's not automatically assume that the kid is lazy.

it's also rich coming from satterfield considering it's an open secret that he's interested in leabing UL

Obviously, some red flags with him but if the staff feels like he's now a positive locker room influence and 100% healthy post-knee surgery, he's a game changer.

Would be the VT RB with the highest ceiling since David Wilson

Didn't see any of that at FSU- not even close.

Did not see anything out of Herbert at Kansas either, and he turned in a pretty big year for us. That being the case could be a reason we are getting a look, considering Herbert when from an UDFA at best to a 6th round pick, so that is a positive for recruiting a transfer running back.

If Laborn was David Wilson, we would have seen that at FSU

To be fair, he had Akers in front of him.

And FSU's team.... Those Tech teams that Wilson was on were pretty good. Hell Akers didn't look like the best RB in his class in Tallahassee.

Not with that offensive line no way

Didn't he dislocate his knee cap and miss the whole 2018 season?

Gobble Till You Wobble

I didn't see it coming either, but Herbert did have two huge games (and a few other good ones) vs P5 competition while at KU...

Did you see his ceiling at FSU?

If we saw his ceiling at FSU, he would already be in the NFL.

If we bring him in, it's a high-risk, high-reward proposition.

Agree with high risk

Dc - I totally agree. 4 stars 3 years ago is just that - 3 years ago. I wish him the best and if he is with us I hope his second chance is a great thing, but to classify him as an elite prospect based on Ratings years ago is misleading.

He is a guy who has talent, but like everyone else will have to show it and earn his spot or he will be another overrated prospect.

Saw a crystal ball for Bryce Duke. He may be great just don't understand the thinking and roster management? If we had 5 RB's enter the portal we would still have too many.....just don't get it.

New class who knows what the RB situation will be in 3 years when he'll be a contributor

New class who knows what the RB situation will be in 3 years when he'll be a contributor transfer.

Fixed this for you.

Transfers are one reason to have more players at a critical position. I would also add that if you think we have mis evaluated a few already in the room, or if a few are expected to be gone in a year or two (I think both), then getting new talent into the pipeline is still critical. There are 85 scholarships available. You don't need 4 deep at redundant positions. So, I would expect more running backs than say left guards or slot receivers. How many is too many is relative to expected attrition. All that to say that yeah the room is packed but not as much as it may seem.

"A person is smart. People are dumb, panicky dangerous animals and you know it." - K

How you feel about Bryce Duke is probably a combination of how you feel about the running back room as a whole (including switching Zohn for Lecht), our chances at getting Ramon Brown, and your opinions on his tape.

I'd say, in a normal situation where we don't already have 9 running backs and we have space to sign two in a class - then you take this kid. He's got vision and a good first cut, with above-average high school speed. He could be a fine player after a year or two in the real weight program.

Now - if you look at our track record developing running backs, then I could see how he might look like the next Wheatley, Steward, Brunson, etc. And - if you're worried about space in a class, do you risk taking a sure thing (or so it seems) in Bryce over fighting it out with Penn State for Ramon Brown?

My take is to take Bryce as soon as you can, and still push hard for Brown - and maybe put some pressure on the current guys over the summer to take a look at where they stand in the depth chart.

It's strange to be pushing for multiple additions to the running back room when the QBs averaged 17 carries/game last year. I don't get the roster management, particularly in what is supposed to be a smaller class.

That is an absolutely fair point, however, the reason I'd take running backs (plural) is we were able to run the ball better in wins, and that included fewer rushing attempts by the QB and and a smaller percent of QB rushes as a proportion of rushing attempts in wins.

Overall, we averaged 17 carries a game from QBs (which was a lot higher in Hendon Hooker games). In wins, we averaged 15.6 QB carries per game but that was only 34% of the rushing attempts in those games. In losses, we averaged 18.3 QB rushing attempts, but those made up 46% of rushing attempts in those games.

I wouldn't say that is anything conclusive or groundbreaking, but we ran more with running backs in our wins.

Maybe we see Duke at another position?

Can he reliably return punts?!?! (only somewhat sarcastic). I'm at the point where that is almost my top goal to have in a recruit.

Recovering scientist working in business consulting

I agree on the punt returns. It is a quick way to lose a game

Laborn has some speed, he had the only score on tech in that 18 game I believe. It would be great if he could field punts and ko's. Why not take him, we only have 10 running backs, right? 1/8th of our total scholarships, that doesnt seem like too many huh?

Edit labor didnt score on us in 18, but had a fairly long pass reception

Highly doubt 10 true RBs will be on the roster come September. Anticipate a few red shirts for the freshmen, and some attrition. In addition, consider players like Blackshear, and Black who will be split out wide or in the slot, and won't necessarily play as RBs.

TKPhi Damn Proud
BSME 2009

IMHO, the only guys who'll actually play next year are Lee, Holston, Blackshear, and King. Some guys just need to leave, change positions or be content with being redshirted.

The RB logjam is completely on the coaches and is just gross negligence. They need to fix it immediately.

Gary over Lee

Lee apparently took a big step forward this spring, wouldn't be shocked to see him as RB1 this fall.

When my eyes first read this, my mind somehow saw Grant over Lee.

Recovering scientist working in business consulting

Who at VT is in charge of managing the 85 man roster in terms of scholarships? And if someone is in charge why did we sign 10 true RBs to scholarships?

And this as the NFL has been valuing the position less and less each year.

I am not sure what to do with my hands now

IMHO, it's just G5-level roster management. You load up on skill position talent and try to out athlete lesser competition. At the P5 level, you build a team from the inside out, and when P5/non-P5 games happen, the greatest talent disparity you notice is the size and athleticism on the lines. We seem to have done a good job at OL, but the front 7 on D and the secondary have been adversely impacted by the number of scholarships allocated to WR and RB the last several years, and it shows.

I disagree, need at least 2 RBs each recruiting class, and with the added year, we have ten. 8 on the roster in a given year actually makes sense.

TKPhi Damn Proud
BSME 2009

Yes, and subpar recruiting. You recruit a legit stud RB, you don't need another one every year

Yes, and subpar recruiting. You recruit a legit stud RB, you don't need another one every year

Disagree with your second point. Given how short the shelf life is for RBs, they're particularly incentivized to leave college early for the NFL. You need constant depth at that position because you may only get two years out of a stud RB before he moves on.

That being said, that's contingent on actually recruiting NFL-level RBs which this staff has only done one time.

The best depth we've ever had at RB was the Evans-Williams-Wilson year (I think that was 2010). We should be aiming for that, not this hodgepodge of guys who may or may not be ACC-caliber RBs.

All I know is, the jumbotron musical selection for the RBs that year was Down With The Sickness, and they were decidedly sick.

Never Forget #1 Overall Seed UVA 54, #64 UMBC 74

I count 10 runningbacks on the roster that year

"A person is smart. People are dumb, panicky dangerous animals and you know it." - K

All on scholarship? I don't know that I've ever really paid that much attention to the number of scholarship RBs we've had until Shane Beamer started using the RBs by committee approach (please correct me if that wasn't Shane. For some reason I associate him, the glove on a stick, and RB committee all together). Prior to that, we always had the one (or two) best RBs who would be a producer and then a relief guy (and sometimes the situational big man) and I didn't really think much about the rest.

A couple names I didnt recognize so probably not. I think 4 were also fullback but I think they all ended up playing tailback as the position dissolved.

"A person is smart. People are dumb, panicky dangerous animals and you know it." - K

Williams, Evans, Wilson, Oglesby, Scales, Gregory were scholarship

Never Forget #1 Overall Seed UVA 54, #64 UMBC 74

Did Phillips eventually earn a scholarship too?

"A person is smart. People are dumb, panicky dangerous animals and you know it." - K

And weren't Oglesby and Scales technically fullbacks?

EDIT: Based on this, there were only four true "tailbacks" on the roster. (Evans, RMFW, Wilson and Gregory). Oglesby, Scales, and the rest of them played FB (and not all of them were on scholarship).

Correct me if I'm wrong, but the TEs essentially play the FB role for us in Fuente's offense (I can't remember the last time I saw a true FB in the game but I may be wrong). If we're really doing apples to apples, you can throw out all of the FBs from 2010 in making the comparsion.

Yes even though that was around the time we got away from a fullback.

"A person is smart. People are dumb, panicky dangerous animals and you know it." - K

Both were used as RB1 at various times in their careers.

Oglesby was the primary backup in 2011, and Scales got 40 carries in 2012.

Never Forget #1 Overall Seed UVA 54, #64 UMBC 74

Your point is still valid. I would compare h-backs like Rambo to the fullback of old.

"A person is smart. People are dumb, panicky dangerous animals and you know it." - K

How many stud RBs are there any more? Even Clemson needed quality backs behind Etienne. And VT absolutely could have used at least one more high quality back last year.

It's not a game of stud RBs any longer. However, what you don't need is 6 or 8 below avg P5 backs on the roster...

2 older guys carrying the load, 2 young contributors (King, Gary) and Lee a guy they saw who could come in compete. Then 5 freshmen, where in a couple years the 2 or 3 that won't play will have transferred.

It's not really bad roster management.

Aren't there 110 scholarship rbs?
Holston, Blackshear, Lee, King, Thomas, Brunson, Christian, Black, Gary, Hampton, Howard hokiesports lists as an LB. RT listed as an RB, and then add in Overton as another roster spot.

edit: And finding that Howard is an LB makes my entire post pointless. So, rather than posting a mayo meme, we'll just leave it here so the names are actually listed.

Top TX recruits and Virginia Tech...I know this isn't sustainable, but you said name a better combination not if it's realistic

It's not just VA... but point taken

VB born, class of '14

I broke this down for the top 10ish recruiting states in a past recruiting thread, and I found that VA had the lowest % of top 15 players staying in-state. So while it happens everywhere, we have been particularly susceptible to poaching from Clemson, UNC, Penn State, Notre Dame, etc. I'll try to find it, but it's difficult to find old posts on here and I don't remember how long ago it was.

No worries. I think that data would be awesome! I think maybe a more articulate way for me to say it is that although VA is a severe case, there are plenty of other states feeling the hurt as well.

Consolidation of power in the CFP Era, the age of the internet, and the regression of VT football all play a part I would argue. But I realize that's all very well debated to death by now lol

Wonder what it's like for Nevada and UNLV with 3, 4, and sometimes even 5 star recruits in Vegas, and not a single kid is even interested in staying in state.

Evan Watkins put in a crystal ball for Matt Hoffman, TE. Only other offer showing at the moment is Temple.

Gobble Till You Wobble

I would say TE has been the spot behind OL that I feel the best about our ability to evaluate talent so I won't get caught up in the stars and offers for those 2 positions (that's not to say that if we landed a highly touted/highly rated/highly sought after recruit that I wouldn't be thrilled, too). If we felt good about offering I feel good about him being interested in us

Oh I'm all in on our TE room. I think we have at least 3 guys worthy of being starters. I think we definitely have a good eye for guys that fit our system and would love if our calling card on offense was developing a multiple TE system like the Patriots have copyrighted. Nothing better than running 3 TEs out on the field and the defense doesn't know if you're going to line up in a spread or a jumbo set.

Apparently this kid dominated the Temple camp and we're trying to get in on him early.

bit of an overreaction. JC tweeted him first, responding to one of Shane's tweets about USC's nutrition plan, if i remember correctly. no big deal.

I think the JC Coleman tweet regarding Covil choosing to go out of state is more insightful than this one personally.

For those, like me, that were wondering what tweet this is referencing

For reference:

So a lot to unpack here. I think this is a reflection of: (1) Letting Zohn go and losing the 757 ties (2) Bud going through his farewell season in 2019 and thus the natural dropoff in recruiting (3) Hamilton not entirely focused on recruiting in his first season as the S coach (and from the sounds of it, would have been his only season at VT if he didn't get the DC position) and (4) The Oscar Smith coach trying to find a nicer way of saying Virginia Tech is not at the same level as Clemson

This is a recruiting miss for sure but I'm not entirely convinced Covil wouldn't have ended up at Clemson if we were pitch perfect.

I mean, it's really a no brainer. If I were a rising senior star football player today, no particular family ties or other bias toward one school, and I had an offer from VT and an offer from Clemson, the choice is pretty clear. Even if VT had hit this one out of the park and had a flawless recruitment of him (which apparently was not the case), how can you turn down an offer from a program like Clemson for a program that has no discernible identity and has been spinning in the mud at best the last 4 years (your entire high school career).

These stories from folks in the 757 after the fact on how "well we were interested in VT but they just didn't prioritize us" are disingenuous at best. We get it, Clemson is a sexier brand right now until we change the narrative. That's where we are as a program.

Clemson is definitely a bigger and better brand than VT football right now there's no rational argument otherwise.

But I think that kind of buries the point here...coach implies VT wasn't really fully engaged or aggressive.

At some point, to get better as a Program you have to win at least some battles for better (high 3*/4*) players. More established schools are likely going to also want those players. While I don't think any realistic fan expects us to magically close the gap between VT and Clem, it's tough to rationalize what our goals are if we're not going pedal to the metal on guys who are purportedly our high-level targets.

When you're already at a disadvantage, you have no shot at all if you're not giving 800% on the Recruiting Trail.

That's the disconnect for me with the current Staff.

Agreed wholeheartedly. But even if we had knocked the results out of the park recruiting-wise, the results speak for themselves: Clemson two-time national champs and in the playoff the last six years. VT? Our best performance under Fu has been almost upsetting Clemson in the 16 ACCCG, we haven't seen even a sliver of that team since.

I'm putting the onus squarely on this staff for results. All the excuses about resources and staff have been pulled. It's time to win.

PWO for his size and has already played a year of D1 sports. I'll take it especially with the Richmond (BHS) connection.

Always like the converted basketball guys. Typically have quick feet and catch with their hands. Intriguing pickup imo

6'9"? What is his catch radius? Fades and kick blocks at least!

Walk on per Bitter. 6'9 245 lbs. Benedictine HS in Richmond then IUPUI (from the pics)

What position is he going to play? With those measurables and basketball background, it has to be TE right?

His picture is with Vice so I'm assuming O line. Already looks big at 245, shouldn't be all that hard to gain some more weight.

6'9 DE or TE is a very exciting idea though. But we're stacked at both of those positions for the foreseeable future

Move over Bucky, we got a new tall meme boi in town

He is going to need 2 years in the weight room to get up to playing weight on O-line. 245 is tiny in P5.

There's more defensive coaches in that pic though, I like his size at end and it's a plus that he has a basketball history.

I think he was not a take at this time as UNC has some higher ranked prospects.

At no point since Mack Brwon got to UNC has fuente/VT taken anything off of UNC's plate.

Either way this is a good pick up but we didn't win a hotly contested battle with UNC for his verbal at the time and if they miss on their targets they may push for him to flip.

Scuttlebutt in the Twitterverse and other message boards seems to think more commitments are incoming.
