Watching the College World Series finals, and ESPN posted an interesting fact on NCAA sanctioned National Championships. Only three P5 schools have never won a Natty in any sport. Kansas State, Mississippi State, and of course my beloved alma mater- VA Tech. I was a big fan of Hail State beating Vandy, but having heard that would shrink the list to us and K-State, I'm not quite as rabid a supporter of Hail State winning it all. But WTH, more Cowbells..

TEAM titles, but the point stands, tough pill to swallow.
As for individual, we've had quite a few T&F individual champs, and of course, Mekhi Lewis winning a wrestling title, 2 years ago
Good insight on VT individual champions. It helps a wee bit with the Hokie sports psyche Surprised on only three P5's with no team titles. At least MSU is a perennial threat to win the CWS. Not sure where our best hopes for VT are, maybe wrestling or soccer. At least we have K-State to keep us company, pending a natty in Stark-Vegas.
Our wrestling team is so close yet so far away. Like football from 2000-2005.. yeah, great talent, etc. but the top teams dusted us. That's where our wrestling program is today. Great, but in an NCAA scenario, we aren't coming close to Penn state Ohio State and Iowa most years. Those programs have too many individual qualifiers compared to us right now. Softball has better odds, IMO.
We barely have 2 each season. They solidly have at least 4 each season that they expect to place and win. Our closest sports will probably be soccer, baseball, or softball where individual talent is so spread out among colleges.
We look to be a long long ways away from title contention in baseball. Things can shift quickly, but we aren't even in the top cut of the ACC, much less the SEC baseball powers.
I agree. I was just listing sports that could possibly be the closest to a championship in the future without basing it on current talent on the teams. These sports generally have a path that has made it possible for smaller schools to get a team to a place that give the school a chance to compete.
Coastal Carolina won their only CWS in 2016, so its possible for a school that has never gone to a CWS to win it, but they are the only ones to do so.
On the flip side, FSU has been 23 times and Clemson 12 and neither have won.
oh yeah its very unlikely to do that and very odd neither Clemson or FSU has won
To be fair, we've only been P5 for 22 years. Before that we were a mid major. In that 22 years we have
5 of our 12 NCAA basketball tourney appearances
6 of our 13 NIT appearances
All 21 individual nationsl titles
3 of our 4 non-varsity championships
Our only college cup appearance
10 softball tournaments (softball was only a varsity sport 4 years before we moved to the BE)
Saw a current member of the golf team win the British amateur and won low amateur at the British open
Yes, VT playing major college sports for 100 years can't stumble upon a natty. It's embarrassing. JMU has 5, Villanova has 27, Coastal Carolina and Rice have them.
Let's go Commodors.
The cowbell cucks can suck it.
After how the NCAA handled NC State, screw Vandy.
First I feel sorry for the NC State team. But, from what I have read the NCAA had no options. At first 4 people were positive and then when they tested the entire team 4 more were positive. What were they supposed to do differently? They let them play one game with a reduced roster before the second batch. I know that this is not supposed to be political but the team has had months to get vaccinated. This is not the MLB, they don't play every day. They may have missed a couple of practices at the most. This probably would not have been a problem if that had happened.
Their coach actively chose not to encourage vaccinations, telling the media that he didn't want to "indoctrinate his players about COVID-19"
Cause, meet effect
There's nothing wrong with directly quoting their coach's statement on the matter, but I do think we should cut the head off this chicken before this tangent devolves.
Lock this puppy up. I have a lot I want to see but have concluded this isn't the platform.
How is that Vandys fault?
Interesting recruiting pitch though.... The only place in P5 you can go where you can be part of the school's first team Natty.
Now that is quite the spin zone! I love it.
Had no idea bout this until yesterday because I do not care about college baseball at all, but it would be really awesome for Miss State to get a first title. My understanding is also that Vandy does/can do some things to get more scholarships and as a result is almost always one of the top baseball schools. I know my boy Dansby went there.
Kyle Wright, too. #ChopOn

David Price as well, which he didn't really hide when he made his way through Durham on his way to the Rays as a prospect.
Vandy is a baseball factory.
What do they do? Hide baseball players on the football team?
I have no idea what creative thing Vandy is doing with scholarships, but I'm almost positive that if you play football and another sport, your scholarship goes against football. A recent VT example is Cole Beck.
I guess I forgot the /s. That was the point. They use football scholarships to add players to the bball team. I guess i'm not that good at sarcasm.
I think it's just that they fully fund their baseball team with the max number of schollys- VT for example does not. It's a donor money thing. It's why Texas and Stanford's men's golf teams are always in the mix.
Thanks to MSU for hanging an L on UVA to help send the Yahoos back home.
I'd love to correct some of the misinformation about NC State, but since the subthread was locked, I guess the new rule is I shouldn't?
I like the new feature
If it gets to the point where we are the only one without a team championship, can we claim to be the champions of not getting a championship? Hey, that should count for something.
And then there were two... congrats state on a good win over vandy. Hopefully we can get ourselves off the no-champ list soon.
It's probably the most painful fact of being a Virginia Tech fan to have never won a team sport in school history...(Second to only Ole Miss in the power five and to almost everyone in the Commonwealth). I've always wondered whether it's a cultural issue.
It's more being a P5 school for about 30% as much time as the schools being compared
Hail State. More Cowbells. Whatever "Dawgs Finna Eat" means. Damn, now it's just VT and K-State. Where the hell are we ever gonna get us a Natty for VT?
A time machine to 1918 to get someone to give the team a title or go back to 1999 and Peter Warwick and have someone arrest him for shoplifting.
We aren't.
"Dogs are fixing to eat".
Fixing to -> Fixin'a-> Finna π
I've always heard it as fidinda. Never saw it spelled out before.
You could swap out what I wrote for that. The point is that "finna" is a shortened version of a shortened version lol
The thing about the situation NC State no one is bringing up: where is the rush? Why do they have to play the game right now. Would they do that for the final four? Maybe? CFB Playoff? No chance. NBA Finals? You get the idea. Literally would be so easy to wait a week and play the game, with three teams left you kinda have to to keep the integrity of the sport.
