All we know is pain. But why?
Virginia Tech G Tyrece Radford has entered into the transfer portal. Radford averaged 12.2 points, 5.9 rebounds, and 2.1 assists for the Hokies last season. pic.twitter.com/pDL0rBIVGJ— Sidelines - Transfer Portal (@SSN_Portal) June 30, 2021

wow this stinks. really hope it's on good terms
Wish the best for him. Good Luck Tyrece. Always a Hokie!
I'm assuming he was recruited right off the roster. Wow. This sucks. He might end up closer to home at LSU.
Maybe he expects talented incoming commitments to steal his PT?
Thanks. I hate it.
Rumors on 247 that he is headed to LSU and the very dirty Will Wade. The timing of this absolutely sucks.
Are you fucking kidding? lol. after Young supported him 100%? Fuck all of this
Did you roll out the jump to conclusions mat before using it?
I mean, I'm not going to say something shady happened if LSU is involved but it is definitely shit timing on Radford's part. Imagine a coach having your back throughout a pretty precarious legal situation, helping you work your way back into a big role before the tournament - only to leave for a school that is under NCAA and FBI investigations related to recruiting practices.
If this is what he wanted to do that's fine, but I have a hard time believe we lose someone like Bamisile if Radford made his intentions clear after the season.
This is some major suckage, not just losing Radford for the player he is, but the timing is BRUTAL... I guess there is time to get somebody in the portal to replace him, but aren't we also trying to get another big game too? Haven't heard any thing on that news front... Or maybe Lynn Kidd filled that void
Mike Young supporting his player through a legal situation was the right then to do then... and it is now... regardless.
Because I believe CMY supports people because they're people and not because anyone might owe him a favor.
I hope Tyrece finds whatever it is he is looking for.
I'm pretty sure it was already delivered in stacks in a duffel bag
Just popped over to the 247 portal page and a familiar face also just announced entering the portal today. Tyrie Jackson.

poop
Here lately I feel like this is the most accurate gif when it comes to VT athletics news
I blame Fuente and Corny for not establishing a culture or something /s
Seriously this is a gut punch to what was shaping up to be a pretty damn good team coming back in 21-22. Unlike football, I trust in CMY in coming up with something to lessen the damage by the time the season starts.
Fucking sucks so bad. Now we absolutely need Bede back right?
No.
Why
Huuuggge negative on offense. We beat Florida with a point guard that can score
W/e he's better than having an inexperienced guy out there. And he can score he did when Buzz was here, just seems like he lost his confidence. Might be different with an extra year maybe not
eh...if anything his scoring has gone up under Young, but it still isn't much
2017-2018 - 2.5 ppg, 8.3 minutes
2018-2019 - 3.8 ppg, 25.3 minutes
2019-2020 - 5.2 ppg, 29.8 minutes
2020-2021 - 3.9 ppg, 25.9 minutes
in the last two years, he has shot ~23% from 3 and <45% from 2
love what he brought to our team, but it's hard to win down the stretch when the other team knows your lead ball handler isn't a threat to score.
I agree completely, just pointing out that he didn't really score under Buzz either. Like you said, I do love what he has brought to the team, and if he comes back I will look forward to seeing what he can do in '21, but I wouldn't expect much difference in year 5 vs what we saw in years 1-4, as far as scoring ability.
yeah, i was agreeing with you and adding some additional numbers to the context
via GIPHY
Okay yeah but is it that he can't or wasn't really asked to because there were better options. The more guys shoot the more confidence they'll gain, especially the guys that aren't specifically shooters.
Either way I'd much rather have a veteran facilitator than a true freshman as backup pg and than inexperienced noncontributors as the potential 6th man.
Even if he scored zero points all season Bede back makes us undeniably better than having the current roster or adding any reclassed recruit. The guys jumping to say otherwise are just casual fans.
Don't like the timing of this. And heading to LSU?
We're gonna be a good team next year. If he doesn't want to be a part of that, especially after we backed you like we did last year?
Damn. This one stings, not gonna lie
Something something nothing nice to say.
The changes to transfers are good for college sports. I keep telling myself that, but am having a harder time believing myself.
*Exception one excluded Virginia Tech from portal benefits
**Only Khalil Herbert will be the one exception to first clause
Good for the player- as it should be, and bad for us as fans.
I tell myself that too when I need to step back. It looks like maybe this particular case could be tied to more details (see below). But, I do wonder, at what point does being bad for fans come full circle to being bad for players again?
I hope he is just looking and stays. Radford is one of my two favorite players to watch right now.
Wow! This sucks hard.
Pretty sure Tyrece tweeted after losing to UF that we'd be back next year. Guess that may still be true, but I was expecting him to be with us!
Sh*t, damn, fu*k!
I blame Wartooth. Should have stayed away until the portal was closed, buddy!
/S
Radford a punk for this one
Hey now, no room for this. Yes it sucks, but don't bash a kid's character for doing what's best for him/his family.
$uper $hitty
I'm hearing it might not be his choice, maybe violated terms of his sentencing/suspension.
Free side of TSL/court system seems to confirm this.
https://virginiatech.sportswar.com/mid/15626254/board/vtbasketball/
Check for yourself.. he has two pending matters before the court...
Show Cause - Impose Suspended Sentence
and
Show Cause - Revoke VASAP
both scheduled for 8/9/21 and both referencing an offense on 5/3/21
VASAP is the alcohol treatment program for DWI offenders. If you participate you get a restricted license for 6-12 months, if you don't - or if you're kicked out - your license is suspended/revoked for 6+ months and you can't drive at all.
A show cause hearing sounds an awful lot like he has to convince the court that he shouldn't be kicked out of VASAP & sent to jail for 60 days (his original suspended sentence).

edit after seeing an update on TSL, the portal entry seems to be more related to a tough financial situation for his family than anything related to his DUI probation. He seems to be keeping his options open when it comes to getting endorsement deals etc.
I am not sure he could replicate his popularity at VT at another school so don't count out a return...
Yes, come on Blacksburg businesses! Sponsor this man to help his family and get us another year of Boots
Not sure how this isn't 100% about him having an offense that will likely violate his probation that has been referenced here. I'm not saying there isn't another issue, but him violating his probation is an automatic bye bye.
whole lotta dragging of Radford in this thread and a lot of it is in very poor taste
Any of the faux-kies speaking negatively about Tyrece Radford should stay home from Cassell this season. We don't need that negative energy. Lots of VT fans seem to think they own the athletes, which is a little sus to say the least. Tyrece Radford gave a ton to our school and got his degree. Clearly something changed to cause him to enter the portal so late based on his statements from the spring.
My favorite player over the last couple seasons. Wishing him the best as always. I hope whatever decision he makes (stay, transfer, go pro) is the best for him and only him, not selfish fake fans online.
NGL I'm a miss my man😭
We probably just went from the odds on favorite to win the ACC to a borderline tournament team. He was definitely a favorite to watch if not the best on the roster. The starting 5 is still amazing but after that the only proven player is N'Guessan. If we can't get another quality transfer at this time we absolutely need Bede back and Ojiako to take a huge step forward
Probably a transfer or maybe a 22 recruit might reclassify
TKP when the football team loses our 6th string WR: "Fuente can't build a culture, he must go!!"
TKP when we lose Cone/Radford: "This aint right, he's a punk!"
Kind of the opposite lol
Edit - Misread the comment.
Kumah's a punk too
Our football coach: myriad of excuses, less wins every year, players on record saying he is a task master jerk, 75th recruiting class
Our basketball coach: Left Bede and Radford from Buzz and nothing else... 2 years later in the NCAA tourney , hoops fans don't make excuses.
Taking a basketball thread and finding a way to turn it in to an indictment of football. Never fails.
eh, idk. In fairness to DC he was replying directly to jmgreen4 who mentioned football first. And jmgreen4 is kinda sniping at DC indirectly anyway so I don't really see the problem with DC snapping back
in fairness to both it wasn't a football comment that started it - it was a comment about us
Easily my favorite player, this sucks
What was our record while he was gone last year?
I hate this news. In how many games last year was Radford the only guy on the entire team willing to fearlessly take it to the rack? The leader in rebounds? To me he was like our own 6'-2" version of Charles Barkley. Much like Rambo in VT football, whenever he touched the ball on offense GOOD things happened. I hope he finds what he is after, but man with his name he freaking belonged in Blacksburg.
Found what could be a reason in a Feb 12th article: as part of his sentence, his driving privileges in Virginia were suspended for 12 months, and he was put on probation for 12 months. It's peak summer time and he is from out of state (and retained his LA driver license) and so maybe he is just sick and tired of not being able to drive anywhere. From the article it sounds like a move back to Baton Rouge (or anywhere outside of VA) would fix that.
Not saying it's THE reason but might be a contributing factor.
I'm not directly familiar with VA or LA but states can only restrict driving within their state but getting driving privileges in other states would be next to impossible in cases I'm familiar with.
IE if you go to apply for a DL in LA and they see you're revoked in VA they're likely taking the VA restrictions and not going to issue you a license. In fact I believe this information is on a national registrar and you can't get a license in another state if you're on that list.
But as a college student from LA attending school in VA, he probably has a LA DL, not a VA one
Most states share driving records under the DLC. This includes VA and LA. He would need to confirm, but it is likely his driving privileges could also be suspended in LA as well.
The Driver License Compact is an interstate compact used by States of the United States to exchange information concerning license suspensions and traffic violations of non-residents and forward them to the state where they are licensed known as the home state. Its theme is One Driver, One License, One Record. The home state would treat the offense as if it had been committed at home, applying home state laws to the out-of-state offense. The action taken would include, but not be limited to, points assessed on a minor offense such as speeding and suspension of license or a major violation such as DWI/DUI. It is not supposed to include non-moving violations like parking tickets, tinted windows, loud exhaust, etc.
Yeah this is what I was getting at. From my experience they take your DL on the spot and mail it back to the home DMV with all the charges. A lot of driving laws appear to be state laws but as to get road funding and grants from the natty gov they share info, laws, minimums, ect so getting penalized in one state is usually reflected everywhere.
Hard to be a good basketball player when you can't drive it to the hoop.
Would this be an issue if you didn't need a car to get most places in Blacksburg?
The bus system is pretty fantastic in Blacksburg and there are grocery stores on all sides of town. You can 100% get by without a car by using the bus, biking or walking but I understand that these guys don't actually have all the free time of normal students with all their athletic responsibilities. I'm not sure they could get by without one or having teammates/roommates who's schedules sync up and allow them to get rides all the time.
The bus system sucks in the summer. It's terrible. (Or atleast it was 16 years ago) With an athlete's schedule I doubt it is feasible to use the busses.
An athlete's schedule is busy, but not THAT busy especially during the summer. Planning is key, but the bus can get you anywhere you need to go. It's also not a large town. An athlete should be able to walk a mile or so.
The one summer I had no car I walked home to foxridge every day because of the bus schedule so it can be done. But it sucked, it would suck even more after practice. It took time away from me doing fun things like golfing or swimming or getting my homework done in time for happy hour.
Oh it sucks for sure! But I can't feel bad for anyone who has to take the bus or walk because of a DUI. Especially in a small college town like Blacksburg. No excuses in my opinion.
I am a former BT driver from more recent than that. We did expand summer routes somewhat, especially to Foxridge, with two buses running half hour loops until 6:30, dropping off to one bus every half hour after that, for 15 hours of service during weekdays.
Boots is gonna be missed dearly. He was an absolute ball of energy and so much fun to watch. Deron Washington levels of fun at times.
Dang, this hurts, but I trust he's making the right choice for himself/his future. I'll miss watching the best inch-for-inch rebounder in the ACC. Dude could take over a game with his drives to the rack and electric transition play. Remember when Coach K admitted Boots was better than all his 5* in the first half of last year's win over Dook? And then he went on to finish the game with a double-double and led us in points, assists, and rebounds. Best wishes to him going forward - he will be missed.
To end on a positive note, who's the best dunker on the team now? Boots set the standard pretty high:
I've got a sneaking suspicion we're about to see how good N'Guessan really is
I recall Alleyne had a nice dunk that got Cassell rocking 2 seasons ago
I think Mutts had a big dunk in the last ACC tournament too
So can a local Blacksburg business sign Radford on some endorsement deal and "convince" him to stay or something 😄
(jokes aside, could something like that actually happen - a business leveraging some venture with a player to get them to play at the school's preferred university?)
yes, starting today Raford can hire an agent and monetize his NLI as the market bears. TOTS could sign him to a 10 milllion dollar endorsement and he can keep his eligibility
Repeat post
And pay for a 24 hr/day chauffer to get around at Tech?
We already named a local town after him, what more could he ask for?
Ah, i'm gonna miss that legend.
Never forget that Michael Jordan wore #23 in honor of his idol, Tyrece Radford.
In other transfer news Kofi Cockburn entered the TP so we're definitely not alone in losing a star
I had to google who he is, but once I saw he was a 7-footer...
Since the news broke I've been doing a lot of thinking...a lot of introspective thinking...and I keep coming to the same conclusion...THIS F$&KING sucks all the way around
Sadly, I kind of expected the other BOOT to drop, but it still makes me very sad to lose such a fan favorite and the great potential story of redemption that could have been. Another bad news day in BBurg to add to the growing list, the bright side being in CMY we trust to continue the upward climb.
Apparently an unpopular opinion, but I'm ok with some criticism of Radford here based on timing and how CMY stuck out his neck for him after Radford did an *incredibly* stupid thing. If he'd been booted from the team and the school after a DUI with a gun, it would have been completely fair.
Whether there's more to this situation, be it LSU funny business or a probation violation or otherwise remains to be seen but this sucks.
He doesn't "owe" VT anything and has every right to do what he wants, but if I'm Mike Young I feel a little slapped in the face.
No, there is no criticism warranted and this is not a slap in the face.
So far, the rumors have left two possibilities:
1. Radford is concerned that he might be suspended/not given another chance for the small violation leading to his impending court date so he wants to keep his options open.
2. Radford comes from a very rough and poor area and he wants to see if he can go somewhere to make some extra money with the brand new NIL rules, such that he can help out his family.
Either way, you can't blame him for entering the portal (especially with option 2). So again, let's refrain from criticizing him and acting like he is doing something wrong by keeping his options open.
This isn't the hot take I came here for, but you're probably right. Whether or not its the primary reason in this case, we should expect more stuff like this due to number 2. I think the new NIL rules are the right thing and the fair thing for the players, but they probably only help the rich programs get richer at the end of the day. Big programs are a bigger market to make money in, period.
this is very tangential to the discussion at hand, but i think the NIL won't just help big programs, but itll help smaller programs in big media markets -- georgia tech, houston, northwestern, etc in football come to mind, and almost too many basketball schools to name. st john's, temple, etc etc
Agreed, I assume that schools in cities (with lots of businesses and sponsorship opportunities) will benefit. Schools in rural areas, maybe not so much
The world is smaller than ever. I do not think you need a city.
I think Miami is the perfect example of what's going to happen. They have swept in and taken full advantage of the situation. The city has tons of large businesses and is growing rapidly. Da U will certainly be playing with a different set of rules now.
You don't need one, but I think you're a fool if you don't see a potential advantage. As said above ^ look at what's going on in Miami
Miami is one city. There will be many more variables. Overall, passion will make money just as it always has. The ten zillion Bama fans are a marketable resource. Many of the promotions I have seen made public thus far are more tied to alumni relationships than metropolitan geography. It will be interesting how it all unfolds.
It will definitely be interesting. I tend to agree that the new rules will not disproportionately favor schools in metro areas. I don't see the new rules creating new markets really, especially in big cities where there are already plenty of advertising outlets from pro or semi-pro teams, but I think they will primarily allow college athletes to profit on existing markets. Those existing markets are the Blue Bloods, of course. Making those schools even more attractive for athletes with any sort of name recognition.
I agree, but I think it might depend on the market to some degree. I'm not sure we'll be seeing $$ rolling into BC for example.
Hard disagree (for now). We don't have any actual facts right now, so I don't think anybody should be saying anything about what Tyrece may or may not have done.
Secondly, while I also think LSU probably has done a lot of shady things, we also have no proof of that here.
The only thing we do know is that Tyrece is thinking about leaving -- it is ok to think that it sucks (because it does), but at the end of the day, only Tyrece knows what is best for him.
We may never know what actually happened here, but until we hear more, we really shouldn't speculate.
Google "Will Wade" and "strong ass offer".
Oh I remember that. That "strong ass offer" didn't result in any real punishment by the NCAA, so I guess it wasn't "shady".
The NCAA is such a joke.
My comments about LSU/probation were not intended to be speculation, just a nod to the rumors (and would 'explain' the move more than what we have right now) the timing sucks and I think it's even worse considering how much Mike Young stood up for him.
If there's more to the story, I'm all ears whenever that info comes out.
Tyrece Radford tweeted some thought bubble emojis last night and received a vague reply from Tre Turner.
Interestingly, the VT men's basketball account liked Radford's post and Radford liked a reply from a fan who wanted him to stay.
Here's to hoping
Mike Jones in there liking some of the replies also
here's the Tre followup. always best practice to link/embed
Only reason I keep coming back to this thread is hoping there is a tweet he is staying
Back on Twitter speculation, Radford retweeted this on the 9th. Definitely get the feeling that if it's possible for him to stay, that he wants to
I do not see his name in the transfer portal on 247. Did he remove his name from the portal? I hope so.
Also it seems awfully late to transfer doesn't it? Even the fact that he hasn't committed anywhere yet could be a good sign.
I really feel like he never wanted to leave, it's probably either (a) uncertainty about his status with upcoming court date or (b) seeing if he had other opportunities to make more money for him & his family with NIL rules
He added his name 48 hours before the deadline for sitting out a year. Virginia Tech has told the press he has not been dismissed. His name is still listed on the Hokiesports 2021-22 roster.
His lawyer has stated he expects his Revocation hearing will be dismissed as long as Radford has no other issues before his hearing this week.
Agreed. Would be nice to get his legal problems behind him, and stay at Home as a Hokie, where he's wanted and loved the most. Unless it's a family matter, it wouldn't seem to make any sense to pack up and leave the program at this point, after you put so much into it to make it what it is. This would be a good year for Boots to reap the rewards of his hard work and help the Hokies make a little noise in the tourney.
A cursory google search brings up a Roanoke Times article saying he's got a hearing due to a positive reading on an ignition interlock.
That happened right before he put his name in, didn't it?
That's a probation violation that in my experience generally gets dropped before court after a meeting with your probation officer.
I had one they're unbelievably sensitive, borderline dangerous. I got locked out of my truck at 7am on my way to work and hadn't drank in weeks.
I know a couple people that had theirs triggered by mouthwash.
Well when you drink enough mouthwash to get drunk ... /s
Though not THAT sarcastic, I grew up knowing people that did that. Their insides must have been tore up.
I think he meant they used mouthwash following the directions so the ignition lock got a "false positive" such as it were.
I am not sure if it's just a VA thing or same across all states, but I know when I had mine in my car (from 2013-2014), it gives up to a 0.02 threshold just in case you did use mouthwash before.
When I got my DWI (in Virginia as well), I also had to have an ignition interlock on my car for the full period of probation (1 year). As you may know, it's such a bitch to blow in/give a reading because you don't just blow air through the tube, you almost have to make a humming noise so the interlock can feel a vibration as people have tried to cheat the system (from what I was told)... It didn' happen to me but I know others who got a positive reading and was given whatever jail sentence that was deferred at the time of conviction.
One thing I do know... If you're gonna get a DUI/DWI, do NOT get it in Northern VA. Worst place to get one in America
Except if you get it on federal property weirdly enough.
Boots IS listed on the updated roster. However, he is the only player without a photo. Seems like he is still on the team, but hasn't been actively with them, pending his court date. If next week goes well, I imagine a return is likely.
In other news, it seems Bede is officially done, as expected. The roster as of today:
#0 Hunter Cattoor
#1 David N'Guessan
#3 Sean Pedulla
#4 Nahiem Alleyne
#5 Storm Murphy
#10 Camden Johnson (walk on)
#11 Jalen Haynes
#13 Darius Maddox
#14 Ben Varga (walk on)
#15 Lynn Kidd
#21 John Ojiako
#22 Keve Aluma
#23 Tyrece Radford*
#25 Justyn Mutts
I really hope Ojiako has a break out year. He is so athletic and just need to stay healthy and put it all together.
That's a roster that can win a LOT of games. That roster can place VT somewhere in the 2-4 seed come NCAA tournament time.
The starting lineup is excellent, especially if Radford plays. The quality of our bench is yet to be seen and will probably determine how good we will truly be.
Let's hope Radford is eligible and back and we are at full strength. It would suck to have another "what if" situation like we had in 2018-19 with Chris Clarke.
From the RT article
Well hmmm
How he managed to get two separate bings on an ignition lock device thrown out shows how an amazing lawyer Jimmy Turk is.
It says two charges based on the bing, not two bings. Could be one bing violated probation on two charges?
He got another one they didn't even charge him with.
Can Jimmy Turk give him a big discount to stay at VT? NIL right??
https://twitter.com/Tyreceradford23/status/1427484481036988416?s=19
RT'd by Boots
Any chance he stays?
Yes, but how good a chance depends on who you ask. The details coming out of his hearing the other day were not exactly encouraging for someone who plans to stay in Virginia. MY and the staff have done what they can. Hopefully, he decides to return because we need each other.
