Justin Fuente is here speaking with reporters. Safety Devin Taylor is not with the team anymore. #Hokiesβ Andy Bitter (@AndyBitterVT) August 18, 2021
adds some clarity to the defensive backfield. imo he was miscast at safety last year and he'd have his work cut out for him to claim a place in the two deep at corner.
edit: he has entered the portal
Devin Taylor has entered the transfer portal, per a source. It was revealed yesterday the safety was no longer with the team. #Hokiesβ Andy Bitter (@AndyBitterVT) August 19, 2021

but why is he not with the team?
sounds like he left the team
Broke his leg in the spring. I wonder if he just couldn't get caught up and slid down the depth chart?
Sounds like Hunter will be a starter.
That seems to be the vibe. He must have really put in the work this offseason if he is ahead of Daley. Sounds like a great situation to have some depth at that spot.
I am super excited about Jalen Stroman. It is great that Tech has some veteran players so the young guys will be able to get some experience without being thrown in the deep end.
Remember the board showing Burmesiter clocking the fastest time this Spring? Or was it summer? Regardless, I'm pretty sure Hunter was #3 which surprised me. Was excited to see that and to hear he may be start at Boundary. Hopefully a good season ahead for him.
I'm sure he had to work to get back in shape, but if I recall Fuente was hyping him big time right before his incident. Not hard to imagine he's just picking up where he left off.
I read this as Taylor was being passed up. He transferred to try and boost his NFL stock, and can't do that on the bench.
My reaction-

I don't want to dump on an exiting player or anything, but my initial reaction was "I suddenly feel better about the Pitt game."
Yup
Everyone that leaves was passed on the depth chart.
Not everyone (Hendon, Kumah the obvious), but being unhappy with your playing time situation doesn't really help matters
broke his leg in the spring, isn't fully recovered and is the #5 safety in the most optimistic interpretation of the depth chart.

Will Keller be playing Backer or Mike do you think?
I have been hearing that the terminology has changed. I put that question into Laaser to see what the new terms are for his chalk talk yesterday, but I haven't seen the finished product. I would assume that Keller will be at whatever they will call the boundary linebacker, but it is hard to know for sure. I think we will start to see "the mike" become a longer, more mobile character as time moves forward.
I'm going to go back to my idea that some one should donate money to rename the positions after Bud Foster. We could name the Mike to the Bud, and Backer becomes the Foster. They would then both play on the Bud Foster side of the ball.
Backer, fill in a Tremaine type of role. Gotta imagine it will be tough to beat out Tisdale this year, but if he does that's a GREAT problem to have.
Dax is coming along as a 4th year junior.
Played out of position for a few years because Ashby was really good
Haha, this is what I thought too. Dude was been a leader on this team since he was a freshman and seems crazy that he is just now coming along...
Maybe.... but your vitriol is in mid-season form.
You rather he wasn't improving?
You getting in these moods is how you have earned a bad rep even tho you can have very good takes. Taylor was horrendous so I hope to god he was passed on the depth chart or we are in real trouble. Dax is finally at Mike. These are very easy things to comprehend but you throw it up in our faces as if somebody has been lying to you. Come on man.
Nah, I think he sometimes goes for sarcasm, but it isn't easily recognized in his posts. Maybe he needs a sig like mine.
He needs to, all the physical tools are there and by all accounts is a team leader. But I agree, last year was not a great audition for his spot as starting mike
King had some awesome flashes two years ago, I hope he's managed to pack on a bit of weight and can stay on the field. Excited to see what he can do.
portal giveth and portal taketh, in this case, the same player
I feel for the young man, he transferred here and got a fair amount of playing time last year.
