Virginia Tech Athletics Announces Transition to Mobile Tickets

A short while ago, Virginia Tech announced that it will be moving to mobile tickets for the fall football season. I have to imagine this comes as a breath of fresh air to most fans, as this likely means the end of paper airplanes and overcrowding in North End Zone. More information at the link below:

Run by Paciolan, in case anyone is wondering, which itself is run by Learfield IMG, so its a natural partnership with our broadcasting company.

All in all, looks similar to how Ticketmaster has theirs, which I've had to do the last couple years with the Carolina Hurricanes. Looks like they are partnered with StubHub for the secondary market, so that should hopefully streamline that process pretty well, as opposed to the shady practices I've seen from Ticketmaster on their app.

Won't do a damn thing about overcrowding in the student sections, as students can still do a screenshot of someone who has a ticket there and then group text to everyone they want to come in. Might, in fact, make that situation even worse, to be honest.

North Endzone is open-seating now for students though.

Onward and upward

Not necessarily a fan of it potentially being forced down our throats. I have multiple tickets that I sometimes give to friends and other family if my immediate family can't make it. Not sure how that will work, or having multiple tickets on a single ap? Does everybody need the ap? Need more information before I can summon up any positive thoughts regarding this.

Reading the FAQs on hokiesports.com site, it looks fairly straightforward to transfer tickets ahead of time to anyone if you want OR you can keep all on one phone if desire (will just slow you down a bit if you do)

From the 2018 VT-uva game-"This is when LEGENDS are made!"

I may have missed it, but has anything been done about the sketchy cell phone service in and out of the stadium.....I'm an old dog, but couldn't this be a huge problem with showing and transferring tickets........but we can get beer in the stadium now.

I doubt big investments were made by VT or cell phone providers during the Covid year. I used to work at Verizon and had the opportunity to talk to some C-Level folks and they basically said beefing up the network isn't a smart financial decision for 6-7 days a year. I would imagine this is the same for other venues and that is why many are beefing up in stadium wifi to improve the fan experience.

Based on statements made during the TechSideline Podcast they have some plans in place to help alleviate some of the potential problems. It also sounded like stadium WiFi was imminent.

Free stadium wifi that works? I will be believe it when I see it.

I was at our local minor league baseball team ballpark this past weekend. The free wifi service was fantastic - there were access points attached to almost every vertical structure (roof overhang, foul poles, flag poles, basically anything out of reach). The wifi was sponsored by a local provider of internet access - guessing that kept costs down. If an organization as small as a minor league baseball team can pull it off, I would think a major technical university could provide a similar experience.

More meh on this. I like being able to physically hold the ticket itself, but have done this a ton with baseball games and races in the past 2-3yrs, so at least I'm used to it. I'm just hoping we get to actually use em Sept. 3rd. Numbers on the rise are scaring me a little bit (I've had it and I have my cootie shots, but I'm worried they'll change the capacity number by then)

Amateur superstar and idiot extraordinaire.

Another thing is the keepsake of an actual ticket. Obviously not the case with printed out tickets but I still have several of my Indy 500 tickets that were put in a protective plastic lanyard that I held on to and still have.

I have a number of paper tickets from past memorable games that get the score written on and become book marks.

I still jerk off manually.

Amateur superstar and idiot extraordinaire.

I'd rather not.

No more trouble trying to scan wet tickets when it rains i.e. Miami 2009

This will kill the scalping business.

Good.

Will it? It hasn't for other sports, concerts, etc. that I've been to.

I don't think it will. I bought tickets for an Atlanta Braves game recently, and they were just transferred to me through tickermaster's app, even though i bought them through vivid seats (strange process...i was skeptical, but it worked). The seller was able to specify the price though, and although I got a good deal, many sellers were asking much more for the same row.

Pearl Jam worked with ticketmaster to only allow you to buy so many tickets, and your name is on them. You can transfer them through ticketmaster for the list price, but not for more. So they have tried to eliminate it.

It really depends.

For me when I try to resell my Canes tickets, I pretty much have to use Ticketmaster, and they set a price floor on what I can charge. They also don't disclose any fees they themselves will add to tickets that are posted for resell. Case in point, I needed to sell off some lower level playoff tickets to the Carolina-Tampa series this past spring. Face value was $160, I listed for $175 so that I could break even when TM took out their fees from what they kicked back to me, and when we looked them up on the website, Ticketmaster had them listed for sale at $230.

Needless to say, it kneecapped my ability to sell those tickets. Ended up having to find a friend of a friend of a friend who would take them.

interesting...i have never sold tickets. you gave me one more reason to hate ticketmaster :-)

TRANSFER
If you cannot make it to the game, you can transfer your tickets to friends and family directly from the HokieSports app on your mobile phone.

This is really great. I have season tickets and there's typically one game that I won't be able to make just because life pops up. This will be super easy to give the ticket to someone. I reaaaaally hope they have this for basketball games too.

I found TKP after two rails from TOTS then walking back to my apartment and re-watching the 2012 Sugar Bowl. I woke up the next day with this username.

I would think it would also be easier to setup some sort of pool of donated tickets as well. No need for empty seats.

I think it said all ticketed VT events will be mobile.

I seldom speak to loluva grads, but when I do, I tell them I want large fries.

"Nooooooooooo!"

"James Franklin to Virginia Tech...."
~Fuck me......*sigh*
"Oh my God.... They're gonna take all our recruits... like WTF bro...."

unless you're in rich people seats, that is. Then you still get your commemorative placard ticket that you hang around your neck.

I'm a bit meh on this change. I used to like the physical tickets because they made great bookmarks. But now that I own a Kindle, I don't need them anymore.

This will not go well for the several thousand or more who have no idea what an app is on the that thing in their pocket/purse they use to call the grand kids

I'm confident the ticket office has a plan in place to make sure that isn't a problem. I think you will be able to print the tickets off from your computer and scan those which would help alleviate some issues for the small group that will have trouble with the phone app.

I very much prefer a physical ticket.

If the tickets are mobile then you might need to chase after them hehe.... fine ill just see myself back to the dad joke thread.

It's all fun and games until you're standing at the stadium, with no phone signal, and can't get the tickets to show up that you just bought from a scalper.

(Because there is still no phone service on that end of town during high loads).

Screenshots are your friend

Go read the mobile tickets FAQ, screenshots not acceptable.

They say that, but i used screenshots when i bought the mobile only ticket a few years ago and it worked every time

Theoretically they are upgrading to prevent that.

I'll hold my breath to see what happens there. I've heard that same statement a time or two and it never seems to make a difference.

i bought tickets recently that i was able to download into the google pay app (also works with apple wallet). so they are on your phone, you don't need wifi or service to access them

But I have neither Google Pay nor Apple wallet and want neither.

Do you not have an iPhone nor android phone? You don't need to have any banking information on it to use the wallet apps.

Seconding this. I used Apple Wallet for my plane ticket a month or two ago, and I have 0 bank information on it. Google Wallet I've used for my other sports tickets. More convenient than an unreliable cell signal and actual banking information isn't required.

class of 1997, so he's probably rocking a flip phone /ducks

Man, I hated when i had to start carrying a pager for work.

I bit the bullet and downloaded the Hokiesports app and accessed my tickets. It says the googlepay thing will work.

I'm speaking to buying at the stadium or surrounding area, day of. I can't even send an I message while I'm there. Much less try to access tickets via an app.

I don't give a damn...bring back "Stick it in"!!!

"Take care of the little things and the big things will come."

I'm meh about this. Digital is fine by me, but the wife and I have kept the last several years of tickets and at the end of the season pair them up with a couple of photos as a reminder of the season.

I think it is a good concept, but I'm worried about the execution. I would have preferred to see a season or two where the mobile ticket system was optional to give people time to adjust. The gate lines can be pretty long already so I'm not looking forward to anything that will make them even longer.

The same. This seems very last minute right now.

I also suspect there's a decent chance they made a late call in pivoting this direction so that they wouldn't have to print and distribute physical tickets to events they are 100% sure they'll be able to allow fans into.

Much easier to void digital barcodes

I was looking for the annual TKP ticket forum, but I couldn't find one for this season. Can the mods create one? I'm happy to, but I think this normally comes from the mods. Thanks!

Thanks!!

Hey - does the 'Face Value' of the ticket no longer appear anywhere with mobile ticketing? I'm not seeing a price listed when I look at 'details' or when I try to put it in my digital wallet? Are tickets no longer priced according to opponent?

I told him I’d crawl on my hands and knees to be the DL coach at Virginia Tech. Now, all of a sudden, I’m sitting in this chair and I told him I’d still crawl on my hands and knees to work here. I just want to be here.

I think I read it somewhere but just wanted to confirm that we won't see our tickets no earlier than 2 weeks before the game? I bought ND tickets and don't see anything when I click on "Manage tickets" in HokieSports app.

Bleeding burnt orange and chicago maroon

I have mine, but they are season tickets.

So have the App. Went to sell 2 tickets, linked to stubhub, log in to Stubhub, listed tickets. Clicked 'view listing' while in Stubhub and asked to log in again and then get incorrect log in info message- its not incorrect. I can view tickets for sale in stubhub while NOT logged in. And I don't see my tickets listed even though they are showing in Hokie App as listed on Stubhub. Did I mention I hate Stubhub? Any ideas?

'Its easy to grin, when your ship comes in, and you've got the stock market beat,

So can you or can you not see your tickets when using the stubhub app/website? Hokie app is telling you that you have them listed but you cannot access the listing from the Hokie App? Can you delist the tickets and try again?

Yeah Hokie app says listed on stubhub but I can't log in to Stubhub via app or browser. I can access Stubhub to view tickets for sale on browser just not while logged in. And I don't see my tickets listed.

'Its easy to grin, when your ship comes in, and you've got the stock market beat,

I would try to remove the listing if you can. Are you able to list the tickets not through VT?

They are stuck on StubHub with no access from VT portal. My wife and I both have Stubhub accts and neither can log in or even reset password- reset password never appears anywhere- spam junk etc... VT ticket office no help- says its a stubhub issue and to call them and wait 3 hrs + on hold. Thanks for that.

'Its easy to grin, when your ship comes in, and you've got the stock market beat,
but the man worthwhile, is the man who can smile, when his shorts are too tight in the seat'

Solved.. The locked my acct and had to call and wait on hold for hour.. Logged in and Tickets were not activated and attempts to activate resulted in error message. What a POS. Canceled and tix went back to Hokie tix acct.

Wisconsin is also implementing this for the first time this season

Outside it's night time, but inside it's LeDay

So the person I am transferring tickets to is getting notice to log in? To What? Now on hold with VT ticket office. Anyone transferred tickets and run in to this?

'Its easy to grin, when your ship comes in, and you've got the stock market beat,

I successfully transferred a set of season tickets. The person who is receiving the tickets has to download the Virginia Tech HokieSports app. If they don't have an account, they need to create one prior to accepting tickets. When you are ready to transfer, you enter their phone number (or maybe email) and they will get a text or email with a link. Once they click on the link, they can accept the tickets and they will be saved to the HokieSports app.

Thanks for the info.. So if you're at a tailgate doing this iits less than convenient

It won't be nearly as easy as handing over a paper ticket, but if the buyer or friend has the app w/ an account, it takes less than 30 seconds to transfer. Still frustrating especially while intoxicated!

Sorry to bump an old thread, but has anyone who purchased season tickets in basketball had their tickets hit the Hokiesports app yet? We're a week away from the opener and I had assumed tickets for that game would be loaded in by now, but I'm not seeing anything.

I found TKP after two rails from TOTS then walking back to my apartment and re-watching the 2012 Sugar Bowl. I woke up the next day with this username.

just checked. not there yet!

I seldom speak to loluva grads, but when I do, I tell them I want large fries.

Thanks! I didn't want to be that guy to call to the ticketing office wondering where my tickets are when they haven't loaded for anyone yet.

Not yet, and I have been informed that the mailed parking passes are invalid. They mailed everybody lot 1 by misprint. I got excited until I saw the email.

So I just checked this morning and my Maine tickets are now there!

Is someone from the ticket office on this site?

Turns out private browsing just stops your wife from checking your history, but not Google, the VT ticket office, or anyone else.
