Agreed. For a quarter and a half, I was pleased. The rest of the game? I couldn't sit because I was too afraid that I was watching us Corn-call ourselves into another loss. And this one might have just tipped the scales enough for me to not watch the rest of the year, because we seemingly have the talent to blow the doors off of that UNC team.

This one was a nightmare to watch for me haha, my dad and I were huddled around a phone during a wedding reception out in the middle of nowhere in Texas with spotty coverage...it seemed like every time the internet went out and came back we had a new QB in there, plus we missed the second, fourth, and fifth overtimes and were stunned to see that we'd somehow made it to a sixth.

I will say that I get the premise, but I doubt it haha. Sam was limited bc our D played lights out. BB had some electric plays, but still looks like he's not quite automatic at QB in the passing game.
That being said, I feel like UNC might've been playing lights out D in the CB game, we just never saw it bc our running game was so solid.

That was a masterclass by our coaches on both offense and defense. The defensive strategy to disrupt the pocket and have Barno waiting to pounce was genius. Our offense (especially first half) controlling the line of scrimmage and allowing defense to rest was huge. The jet sweep to seal the game was fucking genius - don't want to hear any jet sweep hate ever again, it fucking worked tonight.
The players had fucking heart out there. I told my dad that he didn't understand the hate that we had in our hearts and the power of Lane. I wasn't sure we could keep up the intensity for 4 quarters and our boys answered the fucking bell. DBs ballin the fuck out. Charmarri's hands, strong as fuck. Barno a 1st rounder, mark it down. DAXXXX with good hands and making tackles pushing dudes BACKWARDS. Chatman making big plays, safetys making tackles.
I only hope we can forgive our boy King. Not sure we could do it in a loss but we can't bench him for the year. We survived despite a few big mistakes. LET US FUCKING GOOOOOOOOOO

Yeah, I absolutely LOVED our D play tonight...it was so clearly focused on disrupting Howell's pocket and then having guys in place to lock up the run. Mack definitely figured it out going into the second half, but then we just made it work again after we figured out how they were trying to play it. D looked SO much more solid than I thought it would, but I spose that's to be expected when you've got a bunch of guys starting that essentially learned the new system last year but didn't have a chance to put it into play.

Howell made few mistakes. He wont get video game numbers this year though I don't think. I wouldn't discount the talent in our secondary either. But, if they don't fix the O line Howell might not finish the year.

I have never been so happy to be wrong. Terrific night from the defensive tackles (and defensive line) and the corners. Offensive line did a good job. I have some issues with the playcalling (that g play from the pistol and ace formation... why?) but the offense was physical and efficient minus the missed throw to Blackshear.
Man, they needed that.

That game could have easily been 31-10 if not for King's fumble and BB missing Turner wide open on that third down. All in all the offense was efficient and I liked the game plan in the first half. But I'm concerned we haven't really progressed much in the downfield passing attack. Seemed like a lot of the same old bag of tricks. When the offense lined up under center in the ace formation I was just scratching my head. Why put something on the field like that when you barely play under center? The offense really hasn't progressed much since 2016.

It was great to be there and enjoy the game, but I was probably 1 of maybe 1,000 people to wear a mask like we were all supposed to. If we have a superspreader, I can see the season tickets going poof.
From the stands it looked like we played super conservative in the 3rd and UNC made advances when the defense was tired or the second team was in.

That was as great a Defensive performance that VT has put together in years.
The O still leaves alot to be desired. So many low snaps, the fumbles, missed opportunities, and just disappearing at time. There is no reason that game should have been that close and we easily should have had 2 more TD's than we did. But, it was enough to win. AND WIN WE DID!

I was WAY too optimistic for the last month (Hokie fandom starting as soon as I could see a TV doesn't help) BUT WOW feel like JHam has his scheme in place to a point. I won't brag on everyone but as little as we saw our DBs tonight felt so good that performance was great. BB was better than personally anticipated. Just hope we can keep this up. LETS GOOOOOO

Lane was insane tonight. Most packed I've seen in several years and the players more than matched the intensity! Wasn't always pretty, but being able to beat a top 10 team without our A game (on offense) is very encouraging. FAM!

Alright, 6 hours of unbridled positivity is over. VT's offense in the 2nd half: 29 plays, 97 yards, 1 FG, 1 missed FG, 2 INT, 3 punts. Even if you throw out the last drive where they got 12 yards on the first play then lost yards due to kneeling out of the shotgun they averaged 3.92 yards/play. It looked a whole lot like past seasons where the offense ceases to work in the 2nd half and Fuente/Cornelsen have no clue what to do.

The offense could have had some bigger chunks in the third quarter. Burmeister missed wide open receivers repeatedly. Instead he threw a short pass. Granted, he was on the move for a few of the plays, but he could have had huge pass plays if he'd seen his open man.

Well we were playing great on offense until 1:30 left in the 2nd quarter, then it looked like we emphasized burning clock over moving the ball and scoring (fucking insane to do unless there's ~5 min left in the game and we're up multiple scores). Not trying to score before half was dumb. In the 3rd Q we'd run it into their teeth the first two downs (for clock reasons it seemed like) then throw it incomplete on third down (Burmeister missing a wide open Tre was so painful)
To me it seemed more about what we were trying to do than whether or not the offense could move the ball, but could be wrong.

Went back and watched the game this morning, and it is better than the box score though. We were moving the chains, grinding, and burning clock. There's a reason UNC went for it on 4th down twice near mid-field with plenty of time. They were not at all confident they could get stops.
As you mentioned, we did make some mistakes. The INT was truly awful and that was one thing that our offense could not do in that situation. BB's arm seemed to get a little more erratic as he got tired. Hopefully that's game experience / timing and not a pattern. But, the play calling given the situation we were in was pretty fantastic. We execute those key 3rd down plays a little better and we're rolling.

Yea - I think this deserves a new thread, but I agree. I'm really hoping this result isn't fools gold like FSU 2018 was. That said, there were a lot of people on SchemeTwitter talking about how our DL was throwing a ton of different looks at the UNC O, and that gives me hope. I'm looking forward to reading French's review.
I'm also frustrated with the playcalling at the end of the first half. I HATE when coaches run out the clock when they're up. The middle 8 minutes are so important - if we could have gone up 3 scores, the dynamic of the game is completely changed.

I didn't hate the call given that we were up two scores, we don't have a gunslinger at QB, and our D was ballin', it was the first game of the season where mistakes are more likely to occur.

Yes and note that when they got the ball back because VT suddenly shriveled up, they didn't go all conservative (because after all they were going to get the ball back to start 3rd Q). No, they BALLED their asses off and got within one play of at least a FG attempt. And it should never have happened because the team that was controlling the game to that point (1:30 left) should have KEPT DOING WHAT WAS WORKING and put their foot on UNC's freaking argyle effing throat.

not here to temper expectations - happy as hell for last night's win, and very excited to see French's writeup. Very pleased with the D last night, but I dont think we're close to our ceiling yet. Offense - great first quarter and a half, but need to stop playing not to lose. One mistake on offense (King fumble) and three missed plays (missing wide-open Tre, the fade in the endzone that was out by 2", and the missed FG) resulted in this being a tight game and not a 41-10 whoopin'. I'm excited to see how they come out next week and pummel a team that they showed own for 4 quarters. The potential is there - now its up to the coaches to exploit it and the players to execute the way we see that they can.

Yeah, I absolutely LOVED our D play tonight...it was so clearly focused on disrupting Howell's pocket and then having guys in place to lock up the run. Mack definitely figured it out going into the second half, but then we just made it work again after we figured out how they were trying to play it. D looked SO much more solid than I thought it would, but I spose that's to be expected when you've got a bunch of guys starting that essentially learned the new system last year but didn't have a chance to put it into play.
Haven't watched it yet, but yay! TKP isnt burning down!

Not sure if you all noticed the "tweak" J'Ham made mid-game... He began to align Barno up in different places and use him as a spy on Howell. It worked well.

Howell made few mistakes. He wont get video game numbers this year though I don't think. I wouldn't discount the talent in our secondary either. But, if they don't fix the O line Howell might not finish the year.
I still think Howell is pretty legit, but they clearly underestimated our D based on last year's play. Dude had so few opportunities to even play, let alone ball out.
This is the Fam thread, so let's not get into it, but Howell had 32 opportunities... plenty for a "heisman front runner."

I have never been so happy to be wrong. Terrific night from the defensive tackles (and defensive line) and the corners. Offensive line did a good job. I have some issues with the playcalling (that g play from the pistol and ace formation... why?) but the offense was physical and efficient minus the missed throw to Blackshear.
Man, they needed that.
Definitely a few missed throws, BB3 never saw turner streaking wide open in the first half, missed a screen on 3rd and long, those also stand out
It is a nice thing because the errors by BB are correctable. The play calling was so bland at times it was hard to see much from him for long stretches.
Needed to hold on to the ball on a couple of read options too. But, can't be too mad. That field goal goes in, there would have been very little stress down the stretch.
That game could have easily been 31-10 if not for King's fumble and BB missing Turner wide open on that third down. All in all the offense was efficient and I liked the game plan in the first half. But I'm concerned we haven't really progressed much in the downfield passing attack. Seemed like a lot of the same old bag of tricks. When the offense lined up under center in the ace formation I was just scratching my head. Why put something on the field like that when you barely play under center? The offense really hasn't progressed much since 2016.
UNC has really good corners. But I wanted to see more down the field shots on first down when Robinson and Turner were pressed. Still not much from Mitchell on third down... mostly a decoy.
I wonder if they don't want Burmeister keeping it on reads because there's nothing behind him if he has to come out of the game.

The DL played great. It seemed like they disappeared as the game went on but we only rushed 3 a lot and Barno spied then dropped into a shallow zone. It was a great game plan.

The O still leaves alot to be desired. So many low snaps, the fumbles, missed opportunities, and just disappearing at time. There is no reason that game should have been that close and we easily should have had 2 more TD's than we did. But, it was enough to win. AND WIN WE DID!

Just made it back to NC from Blacksburg.
Lane was insane tonight. Most packed I've seen in several years and the players more than matched the intensity! Wasn't always pretty, but being able to beat a top 10 team without our A game (on offense) is very encouraging. FAM!
It was so good seeing Lane Stadium back in form.

Alright, 6 hours of unbridled positivity is over. VT's offense in the 2nd half: 29 plays, 97 yards, 1 FG, 1 missed FG, 2 INT, 3 punts. Even if you throw out the last drive where they got 12 yards on the first play then lost yards due to kneeling out of the shotgun they averaged 3.92 yards/play. It looked a whole lot like past seasons where the offense ceases to work in the 2nd half and Fuente/Cornelsen have no clue what to do.
The offense could have had some bigger chunks in the third quarter. Burmeister missed wide open receivers repeatedly. Instead he threw a short pass. Granted, he was on the move for a few of the plays, but he could have had huge pass plays if he'd seen his open man.
Offense was booty in the second half, and we still won. Saying there's still work to do to improve is a whole lot nicer after a big win fam
Well we were playing great on offense until 1:30 left in the 2nd quarter, then it looked like we emphasized burning clock over moving the ball and scoring (fucking insane to do unless there's ~5 min left in the game and we're up multiple scores). Not trying to score before half was dumb. In the 3rd Q we'd run it into their teeth the first two downs (for clock reasons it seemed like) then throw it incomplete on third down (Burmeister missing a wide open Tre was so painful)
To me it seemed more about what we were trying to do than whether or not the offense could move the ball, but could be wrong.

Went back and watched the game this morning, and it is better than the box score though. We were moving the chains, grinding, and burning clock. There's a reason UNC went for it on 4th down twice near mid-field with plenty of time. They were not at all confident they could get stops.
As you mentioned, we did make some mistakes. The INT was truly awful and that was one thing that our offense could not do in that situation. BB's arm seemed to get a little more erratic as he got tired. Hopefully that's game experience / timing and not a pattern. But, the play calling given the situation we were in was pretty fantastic. We execute those key 3rd down plays a little better and we're rolling.
Yea - I think this deserves a new thread, but I agree. I'm really hoping this result isn't fools gold like FSU 2018 was. That said, there were a lot of people on SchemeTwitter talking about how our DL was throwing a ton of different looks at the UNC O, and that gives me hope. I'm looking forward to reading French's review.
I'm also frustrated with the playcalling at the end of the first half. I HATE when coaches run out the clock when they're up. The middle 8 minutes are so important - if we could have gone up 3 scores, the dynamic of the game is completely changed.
The flip side is that if we screw that up with a TO and Howell hits Brown for a late score, that's a different ballgame. I didn't hate the call given that we were up two scores, we don't have a gunslinger at QB, and our D was ballin', it was the first game of the season where mistakes are more likely to occur.
Glad we didn't need another score though! :)
This is certainly a valid point, however when you walked into an awkward press conference 9 months ago where everyone in the world thought you were losing your job you need to coach like your job is on the line - coach to win the game.
Fortunately we did win and it's sort of irrelevant ATM.
Yes and note that when they got the ball back because VT suddenly shriveled up, they didn't go all conservative (because after all they were going to get the ball back to start 3rd Q). No, they BALLED their asses off and got within one play of at least a FG attempt. And it should never have happened because the team that was controlling the game to that point (1:30 left) should have KEPT DOING WHAT WAS WORKING and put their foot on UNC's freaking argyle effing throat.

not here to temper expectations - happy as hell for last night's win, and very excited to see French's writeup. Very pleased with the D last night, but I dont think we're close to our ceiling yet. Offense - great first quarter and a half, but need to stop playing not to lose. One mistake on offense (King fumble) and three missed plays (missing wide-open Tre, the fade in the endzone that was out by 2", and the missed FG) resulted in this being a tight game and not a 41-10 whoopin'. I'm excited to see how they come out next week and pummel a team that they showed own for 4 quarters. The potential is there - now its up to the coaches to exploit it and the players to execute the way we see that they can.
