ESPN CFB Power Rankings Week 1*

ESPN up to their usual shenanigans. UNC still ranked above us according to them despite the convincing loss, not to mention ND and FSU haven't played yet.

Well you see they have a heisman hopeful QB, so inconsequential things like wins and losses don't matter as much when you're trying to win the heisman.

ESPN narratives:

1 TD win is not a convincing loss. I don't think either of us should be ranked but let's be honest this was more about them being overrated and losing tons of talent to the NFL than us being a great team.

I can imagine no more rewarding a career. And any man who may be asked in this century what he did to make his life worthwhile, I think can respond with a good deal of pride and satisfaction:
“I served in the United States Navy"

Should've been a 3 TD loss

Never Forget #1 Overall Seed UVA 54, #64 UMBC 74

You could say that about all games really.

Maybe we should survey the UNC O line

Pretty negative take - it will remain to be seen in terms of how good we are, but there were clear signs the Hokies could be a very good team.

I was having 2004 team vibes. Maybe not tons of stars, but great energy and leadership, solid team that has all bought in and some young talent that will make a difference.

We will see...

I am all for the win and happy for the players, just have zero faith in this coaching staff and AD to get things done based on the last 6 non first years of the tenure...

It's ESPN "Power Rankings". While I agree it makes absolutely no sense to have UNC ahead of VT when your only data points are: 1. Pre-season hype / expectations and 2. A head to head between the two, they do this purely for clicks and to get folks talking about it.

I'd like to see the AP and coaches poll. Those should show VT ranked and 1-2 spots ahead of UNCheat.

I seriously doubt we will be ranked ahead of UNC in either poll. It's rare that a top 10 team is jumped by a team hardly receiving votes, even in week 1.

That's a good point. I still believe these ESPN Power Rankings will look a lot diff than the AP and coaches poll.

My guess is we will be slightly higher in the coaches poll.

I would be fine not being ranked, gotta earn it a bit more, but espn wants unranked for the ND game.

I stand pleasantly corrected

Nobody wins the preseason like Mack Brown. The power rankings formula consists of:

1. Recruiting rankings
2. Fear of those recruiting rankings by the winning teams "fans"
3. If you're considered both a sleeping giant and a juggernaut
4. You've beat absolutely no one of consequence with a generational qb

Ya know, I like it. We'll probably be ranked in the AP Top 25 on Tuesday, but rankings are meaningless right now - we typically play better and hungrier under the radar and as the underdogs. And remember, it was only one game. If we stay confident and hungry, we'll get our credit when it counts.

Week 1. I can't possibly work up any outrage.

Frankly, I don't want to see VT ranked higher until I see (and believe) some more offense.

Or until we're 6-0

Just told my wife that if fsu beats #9 nd, the noles will be ranked top 15 and they'll be 'back'

We beat #10 uncheat and the story is they were overrated, we may get top 25, maybe.

Not saying what is right, just noting the narratives.

This is very true.

I think we are better than FSU, but their game was so much more exciting as a total game. Their team was capable of offense for 4 quarters. I think that goes a long way into being "back". Most of our excitement was defensive

Free Hugh

I'm perfectly happy with defensive excitement! That was a crucial part of our winning formula in Beamer's heyday.

Hokie in West Africa...sadly, I can't jump up and down hard enough for it to be felt in Lane

Their team was capable of offense for 4 quarters? Are you talking about Florida State or some other team?

Just win baby...just win

/beats ranked team

/still ranked behind team we beat

There is no way to make this make sense, all justifications are invalid.

21st century QBs Undefeated vs UVA:
MV7, MV5, LT3, Grant Wells, Braxton Burmeister, Ryan Willis, Josh Jackson, Jerod Evans, Michael Brewer, Tyrod Taylor, Sean Glennon, and Grant Noel. That's right, UVA. You couldn't beat Grant Noel.

Well, you see, UNC is the better football team, and that's what matters. They just had an off night.

Week 1 polls are silly. Tried listening to the ESPN football podcast on Monday and it was nothing but finebaum and co slobbering over the meaning of results from the weekend and how they effect the teams making the playoff. One fucking week in and they won't shut up about it and it's one reason I'm learning to like packer and Durham. Atleast they don't entertain that crap like all the other talking heads.
We have historically been poor when ranked and I'm all for the recognition but we need to be more consistent this season when ranked

Directions from Blacksburg to whoville, go north till you smell it then go east until you step in it

ESPN college football podcast is unlistenable unless you just want to hear about the top 4 teams.
