Junior rover Kyshoen Jarrett, who started in all 26 games over the last two seasons and played in every game since becoming a Hokie, is returning for his senior season. It was announced minutes ago by Jarrett and Virginia Tech. Jarrett had submitted paperwork to the NFL advisory committee to gauge his draft stock.

Boom.

Last year, French detailed the importance of the rover in Bud's defense, as well as Jarrett's importance to the rover position.

Yesss

hell yeah, i think he'll provide some awesome senior leadership...plus hopefully deliver some more incredible hits

tyrod did it mikey! tyrod did it!

He showed great improvement in 2013, even getting his first picks as a Hokie. I have no doubt he'll continue to be a great asset for the Lunch Pail Defense

He was going for a killshot and accidentally intercepted the pass.

This is a major boost. When the Hokies were forced to move Bonner to nickel corner, Jarrett was forced to play a deeper safety role, and that hurt the Hokies in run support late in the year. With Jarrett returning, Sheggog now in the mix for playing time, Frey Greene and Clark are a year older and more experienced and Fisher and Reavis coming in, the safety position has a little bit of depth for the first time since 2009.

What role do you see for Bonner next year?

Hopefully none, lol jk

Hopefully being the deep safety blanket to the field side like he was early in the year. He isn't good enough in coverage to play man every down, and he definitely has room to grow in run support (awful against Miami and BC) but he was very effective as a free hitter deep while Kendall and Facyson got their feet wet.

Agreed, he played much better in that role earlier in the season.

One of my favorite Hokies of all-time!
He has a brother he took care of all through high school, and seems like the kind of guy that leads by example. Fantastic work ethic and a super-tough on the field; I'm hoping we see him with the lunch pail next year!

Somebody needs to show this hit to UCLA and CBS. This is what a big hit is SUPPOSED to look like..lead with your shoulder!!

Anatomy of a vicious, but perfectly legal hit:

seeing these two graphics side by side (well..not quite but you get the idea) makes me think of those corny old crime shows when they 'enhance' low-res surveillance footage...

Onward and upward

the fact that it was legal doesn't make me want to see it anymore. I'm just tired of the "Jacked Up" culture.

you don't HAVE to watch football...there are other sports too..like soccer.

I'm not sure I understand your criticism. Do you have a problem with me posting the picture (which was done to take a swipe at UCLA's Zumwalt and CBS while simultaneously illustrating excellent football technique)? BCH for posting a different view to confirm it? Joe for posting the original GIF? The fact that any of us like it? Kyshoen for making the hit? The fact that the hit is legal?

"Exit light..."

Wouldn't excellent technique include wrapping up on the tackle? (We are talking about the Pitt hit, not the Marshall INT, right?)

"Our job as coaches is to influence young people's lives for the better in terms of fundamental skills, work ethic, and doing the right thing. Every now and again, a player actually has that effect on the coaching staff." Justin Fuente on Sam Rogers

Yes, talking about the Pitt hit. I think it depends. If the intent is simply to bring the runner down, then yes, I think the proper technique is to wrap him up. If you're trying to jar the ball loose and potentially change the game, then a shoulder-to-shoulder hit, delivered from the side of a non-defenseless receiver (who was in the act of running downfield), is perfectly viable and proper.

"Exit light..."

Kam Chancellor (Ronnie Lott and those type) would disagree with you. As the last man you own your space. People come inside it you let them know not to come back. Form tackling just tells them your not gonna let them go farther. Bone crushing (legal) hits say something else entirely and can cause a receiver to not make the next catch in your space because he is looking for the hit instead of the ball.

"...sticks and stones may break my bones but I'm gonna kick you repeatedly in the balls Gardoki!"

You don't have to sacrifice one for the other as far as hits go! A vicious hit can be delivered with arms around the offensive player.

Oh, very true but I see it more as an intimidation thing. Punish someone with a sick hit and stand over them all manly like. Hell if our punter can do it then our safety should too!

(I know AJ wrapped up on his tackle but it's a great picture)

My frustration isn't aimed at anyone in particular, but the culture of football fans and how the media drummed into our heads that this was something we should all celebrate. It's not. That's a brain in there, two of them. It was wrong when Conrad Dobler (sp?) did it, it was wrong when Ronnie Lott did it and I don't want to celebrate when Kyshon Jarrett does it (I'm a huge Jarrett fan not because of his ability to hit but because of the touching stories about his care for his disabled brother).

When there were no facemasks and guys were tackled by their noses and eye sockets, that was barbaric then but not perceived as such. Then there were rules changes. When facemasks were first instituted, tackling a guy by the facemask wasn't even illegal for a few years. Then, it was and it is now clear that it is an unfair way of tackling. Same for horsecollaring, doesn't look like much but can be very damaging.

I just don't celebrate big hits like this anymore. Maybe it's the father in me, with boys who might want to one day play football. But Ky saved our bacon with that hit, but he could have just put his shoulder into the ribs and it would have had the same affect. I believe once the "Jacked Up" culture is gone, and it won't take but a few more years, this admiration for big hits will subside.

But this may be a minority viewpoint. I accept that and won't comment any further on others joy in the big hit culture. I appreciate that some see the viciousness of the sport as part and parcel to the spirit of the game.

Very understandable points. +1 I completely agree with you that there are rules for a reason. Facemasks, horse collars and targeting are extremely serious issues that should be controlled.

However, I think you are reading the hit incorrectly. After the catch the Pitt player can be seen stumbling forward and you can see Kyshoen actually getting quite low in preparation of delivering the hit. Then just before the hit the Pitt player tries to pull up, his forward momentum preventing him from being able to upright completely he leans his shoulder into the hit. Had the Pitt player been running in a normal stance then Kyshoen's hit would have squarely been in the lower chest as he projected himself upwards in what would have surely upturned the poor receiver. Instead their shoulders contact and then helmets spinning the receiver off. All in a matter 1.5 seconds.

In short, yes you are correct, but the game at this speed cannot all be perfectly placed hits. I certainly don't think Kyshoen could have gotten any lower to get all the way under the receiver's upper body, yet still over his knees, to deliver a hit to the ribs as you would prefer.

Well stated. In reality, my initial reaction to this hit was:

Whenever a guy gets leveled, I react pretty much the same way. Could he have done it differently? Maybe, but it happened very fast. I'm with you that I certainly don't like guys lighting others up for the sake of trying to get on a highlight reel, but as long as it's within the rules, I'm good with it in the end. I also always wait to celebrate a big play until I can see that everyone (Hokies and opponents alike) has walked away uninjured. Nothing worse than a kid playing his heart out, only to go down hurt in some way.

"Exit light..."

Great to see us keeping some depth in the front 7. It almost makes me want to dance.

Seriously though, I really should fold that laundry.

Love the gif...but *front* 7?

Rover means safety, right?

Strong Safety specifically.

The strong safety does play slightly closer to the ball than the free safety though so I can kinda understand the confustion. The main thing is "LOOK! GIFS!"

Sorry, y'all are right. I was thinking LB for some reason. I will mean front 7 when Maddy makes a decision. I would hate to lose him, Skip, and Gayle.

And JR and Wilson

Jarrett is kinda "Front 8" when he plays that LB role in Foster's hybrid 4-4.

I know he's pissed that he messed up but I love kyle fuller in this gif

West Virginian by birth, Hokie by choice

Agreed, but just change what you think he says when he does his Fuller-smash. It makes it better if you think he's saying, "what a fucking hit!!" #fullersmash

"You know when the Hokies say 'We are Virginia Tech' they're going to mean it."- Lee Corso

Looks to me more like he's going "OH MY GAWD IT'S CRAZY!!"

Hello Mr Street BOOM..Meet Mr Jarrett!

Heavy Shoulders on that young man! Thrilled to have him for another year-

Rover, Wanderer, Nomad, Vagabond, call him want you will.

Metallica for the Leg!

A decade on TKP and it's been time well spent.

What a fantastic reply. Every time I hear the term rover I think if that song

Bigger, Faster, STRONGER...BUILT TO HIT

I think of a different song, but fortunately Jarrett is not singing this tune.

And it's no, nay, never,
No nay never no more,
Will I play the wild rover
No never no more.
