Hokie Hoops: The Last 3 Games...Ouch

Virginia Tech Hokies football, basketball, athletics blog and forum featuring: unique columns, breaking news, film studies, in-depth analysis, recruiting, videos and jokes.

Hello again all of you sad, masochistic people out there known as Virginia Tech men's basketball fans. In my last basketball column I previewed the VCU game and wrote things like "It's not going to be easy, but beating Virginia Commonwealth would not be impossible for this team."

I want to thank the remainder of the people who are still reading this column, because I'm going to guess that about 75% of you questioned my credibility and stopped. Sure, I thought that the Hokies could give the Rams a run for their money. Was that more about me thinking that VCU was overrated than Tech being under rated? Maybe, but at the end of the day it still goes down as one of my top ten "make myself look really stupid on the internet" predictions.

Since that embarrassment, Tech split a pair of home games that was assumed to be a sweep, and began conference play for good. Let's take a look at how they fared over those three games.

UNCG 55–Virginia Tech 52

This clunker of a loss to UNC Greensboro, seemed inexplicable. The 6-7 Spartans were thought to be an easy win, yet ice cold shooting from both the field and the line lead to a game that was way too close down the stretch. What happens when a game is close down the stretch? Well, anything. Just target="_blank">ask Roy Williams.

I'm not saying that the Greensboro loss wasn't disappointing. It was incredibly disappointing, inexcusable and just generally poor basketball. Getting run out of the gym by VCU is one thing, shooting 18-50 against one of the fake UNCs is another thing altogether. Here's a stat for how bad Tech's shooting was: only four players shot the ball more than four times, with those four players putting up 41 out of the team's 50 shots. Joey Van Zegeren and Ben Emelogu went 9-16. The other two, Jarell Eddie and Marshall Wood, went 5-25. FIVE-FOR-TWENTY-FIVE! And while you can chalk up some of those misses to bad luck, those are enough bricks to build Cadarian Raines a nice dog house in James Johnson's office.

It's the losses like this that drive me insane. Not losing by a combined 49 points to Michigan State and VCU, but losing by a combined four points against USC Upstate and UNC Greensboro. Some of that can be chalked up to youth. There are way too many contested jump shots taken early in the shot clock, which is (primarily) a youthful mistake. The Hokies had a freshman (Devin Wilson) on the line after an and-one to tie the game against Greensboro with 10 seconds to play, and he missed the free throw.

That being said, at some point in time you have to look at the coaching staff. I'm not saying show up at Cassell with pitchforks and torches, but the staff has a huge responsibility to put their players in the best position to succeed. Losses to inferior opponents say that that is not always the case. It's losses like this (and to Georgia Southern last year) that have been biggest red mark on JJ's resume thus far.

Virginia Tech 82–UMES 66

For those of you who are confused, this game happened on New Years Eve at roughly the exact same time as the Sun Bowl. There's really not much to talk about here, other than you talking out loud to try and figure out what UMES stands for (University of Maryland-Eastern Shore). This team is one of the worst in the NCAA. The 2-11 Hawks' best win was a seven point victory over Mount St. Mary's and just recently came off a 24 point loss to Savannah State. Yes, the same Savannah State that scored 34 points against Florida.

In summary, I think the only thing to take away is that things could always be worse. Well, unless you're a fan of UMES, then they really, really can't.

Syracuse 72–Virginia Tech 52

Ugh.

That's really all I want to say about this game. The thing that annoys me most is that it can be considered a "victory" that it was close for a half. People can say "Well hey, they made the second best team in the country sweat until halftime!"

I hated this game. Every single second of it, really. I hated it because you could tell from the jump how this one would play out. These young guys would put up just enough for a fight during most of the first half, Syracuse would adjust and then those poor young guys would have no idea what to do. Well, you know what? That happened. Tech shot 37% from the field, including an abysmal stretch where they scored 11 points in the first 14 minutes of the second half. There are 20 minutes in a college half, by the way.

Coming out of halftime Jim Boeheim made adjustments. They shadowed Adam Smith everywhere after he made three 3s in the first half. C.J. Barksdale was playing well in the midrange belly of the zone? Yep, they started playing him tight too.

Not that it was out of control for the longest time. It was still a 10 point game midway through the second half. That was when the wheels came off, however. The long forwards of 'Cuse gave Eddie problems all night, and his shooting percentage showed it. It seemed like each freshman made their own special version of "young guy mistakes". Wilson would pick up his dribble 20 feet from the basket, stopping the offense. Emelogu would miss the opportunity for an easy pass only to create a contested shot for himself. Adam Smith (technically he's not a frosh, but I'm counting him in the group) took shots from Siberia early in the shot clock. van Zegeren would catch the ball weakly in the paint...you get the idea.

Here's a summary of that paragraph for anyone who zoned out: they did everything that they shouldn't have.

Also, let me pose a question to no one in particular. This Syracuse game was the first in a three-game home stand, with 4-11 BC and untested Clemson to follow. Those last two are winnable games, and games that Tech needs to win. Sure, they're not jockeying for tournament position, but they (and yes, by they I mean JJ) need to show progress from year one to year two. Finishing eleventh or twelfth instead of fifteenth would be huge. They came into the game on Tuesday with two big time injuries and an illness. Wood was battling the flu, Smith has been struggling with an on-going calf issue and Barksdale has a hodgepodge of issues including an injured ankle, knee, and the flu.

Before I make my point, let me reiterate: the next two games of this stretch are MUCH more important than the game against the Orange. Why in the hell, then, did Smith play 30 minutes, Barksdale 20 and Wood 8? I don't think anyone aggravated anything, but you never know. Those guys should have played SERIOUSLY reduced minutes, because at the end of the day this game just isn't that important. Think about how poor the point guard depth is. If Smith is out, Emelogu would be the backup point should Wilson need to sit. What about the presence Barksdale gives at power forward? He may be the best all-around player on this team right now. He'll be needed in (hopefully) close contests against the Eagles and Tigers.

I'll be coming out with another article shortly with my version of grades for this team, but as of now all you need to know is that this team is like one of those target="_blank"> ridiculously catchy commercial jingles. You know what it is, but sometimes the beat gets stuck in your head and you convince yourself that it's a real song, until you remember that it's from a commercial.

Tech can beat other bad teams (like West Virginia or Miami), but a good half here or there makes you think otherwise...until it doesn't.

Good evaluation. Yeah, this team is hard to watch. Last season it was obvious what the game plan was.. push the ball, take the first good shot you have, or get it to EG asap. Not that last year's scheme was always successful but it was fun to watch when it worked and with the right players we could be competitive against most teams in our conference. In order to win by trying to dominate the transition game we have to have superior athletes combined with a guard that is a great decision maker. Throw in an athletic big man that can rebound and run the floor and we become a threat to knock off anyone. This season the youth and lack of overall talent is making it very difficult for JJ to win. Not his fault entirely, but we still can't afford to lose to UNC-G or USC Upstate. Hopefully JJ can find a few guys that can save the ship over the next couple seasons. If not... well.... the sharks are already circling the boat.

Syracuse made ESPN's Top 10 with the rediculous rejection by Jerami Grant on Joey Van Zeregen. Thanks ESPN. Not.

Sums up our season so far.

Did they not show the ridiculous rejection JVZ had on CJ Fair? That was the best of his two blocks in the game and far better than anything cuse did.

Eddie can shoot, but he folds the tent way too easily. Not a fighter in my opinion.
Why we don't Raines and Barksdale more against taller teams is a mystery - what is JJ thinking? Also, the JvZ set up at the top of the key without any motion the entire first half...Ummm, what? I don't get it.
Doht!!

Pain is Temporary, Chicks Dig Scars
Glory is Forever, Let's Go Hokies!!

I agree with you. Eddie always does the great dissappearing act against better competition because he doesn't have the athleticism to create his own shot or get free. Raines has never been my favorite player but last night was as good as I have seen him play since maybe Ok St last year. Hopefully Barksdale can get healthy because this team desperatley needs him to be a viable second or third scorer or else they will be a last place team.

Because Raines is a bum?

Speaking of sharpening pitchforks, do we like JJ? I'm just now transitioning back into Hokie basketball.

Jury is still out on this in my opinion. The lack of identity on offense is really concerning but he gets these guys to play solid defense and they are making an effort. The recent talent drain on the program is pretty difficult to overcome.

In just the last two years, here is what has gone down (these are ten scholarship players that either didn't come or left the program early): If these ten are here, you have an entirely different roster.
Marquis Rankin(PG) chooses to leave the program
Malik Mueller(PG) deemed ineligible this year
Donte Clark didn't qualify and ended up at UMass
Ben Boggs transferred
Ty Garland Transferred and led Lasalle to the NCAA
Robert Brown transferred
Dorian Finney Smith transferred to Florida (another shady AAU deal in the background)
Montrezl Harrell opted out of his NLI and helped Louisville win a national title (Shady dealings involved with his former AAU coach)
Allan Chaney had to leave the program after two years with the medical ruling (had a scholarship held up) than helped High Point reach the NCAA tournament
Manny Atkins transferred

Right now, JJ only has three three stars coming in for next year, according to Rivals:
SG Justin Bibbs 6'5" 175 lbs
SG Jalen Hudson 6'5" 190 lbs
SF T.J. Lang 6'7" 180 lbs

Long fast guys to run the break, and don't be surprised if JJ and his staff find one or two more to fill out the roster between now and next season.

He also has another SG from Roanoke that has already committed to the 2015 class so we will see how things work out.

I would strongly disagree that we play solid defense...

In the low post, yes they play good D. On the perimeter or man, not really. Guys Like Eddie and Adam Smith just aren't good defenders. Which doesn't matter, if they are shooting hot. When they go cold, they have nothing to fall back on i.e. Defensive pressure leading to runouts.

Tweedy can run like a dadgum antelope or whatever. I like to use scalded dog. Do antelopes lumber? Cheetah, OK. He runs like a cheetah. He's fast. - Bud Foster

i'm quickly fading on him.

I thought Barksdale played well last night. Best all around player on the team and probably the best FT shooter too.

In Sam Rogers we trust.

and hes also Seth's last recruit (a 4*)...might get ugly in the burg. Montrezyl, DFS, etc already gone.

"Welcome to the terror dome!"

one thing the new ad will have to consider is the quickly dwindling attendance. i'm not saying i blame anyone for not wanting to watch a bad team but how much money are we losing with every home game? just a couple years ago the cassel was more or less packed for most games. now we're half empty when the #2 team in the country rolls into town? seth never really got us to where we want to be as a program but the team was good enough to butts in seats. now it's just embarrasing.

Last night's attendance was pathetic. The average fans have thrown in the towel. I love basketball and I love my Hokies, but I can't really blame them. We haven't been competitive against a good opponent since JJ took over. The only marquee win would be Ok. State last year. All other "big" games, in or out of conference, and against UVa have been 20 point losses.

well, we still had more people there last night than uva had fans at their spring game.

I know I was planning on getting out there until I saw the forecast had a wind chill of -15 around game time, and even then I was hesitant until I had to schedule a meeting with a customer in Singapore starting at 8:30. The students are also on winter break. I would expect the cold and lack of students in town kept a lot of people away that would have otherwise been interested in seeing the #2 team in the nation.

Attendance had already long since dwindled under SG.

Once the New Conference smell wore off and the contiuned missing of the Tournament happened, combined with a 4-12 conference record and things were already getting bad.

I disagree on Smith's playing time. JJ said after the game he faded due to conditioning for lack of real game experience. If we are to win the next two, he needs to be in game shape. I don't see how resting a guys for a game with three days rest between the next game is any benefit to the player who wants to compete vs. the #2 team in the country. Kids want the challenge and I'm sure Smith was stoked to get the PT.

He needs it with how cold it has been around here. He was off the team until all the players showed up in JJs office to keep him on the roster.

Only reason we played UMES was their head coach was a former coach at Tech. He was entertaining to watch; the rest of the game was pretty unbearable.

Last night's just shows how much they need depth and if Malik was available this year, the team would be a heck of a lot different. I wouldn't be surprised if he starts at point next year with Devin spelling him. Smith is a sharpshooter but he just isn't tall enough to get open looks against bigger guards. Jarrell will always do Jarrell things, which is either be red hot or ice cold. Getting into double digit wins will be a "success" for the year and hopefully with the freshmen getting experience and a bunch of guards coming in next year, they will have the depth to do a lot better than this year. This is going to be a long transition for JJ and with the new AD coming in, I could see him getting the axe before he makes any real progress.

I hate to be negative but I also remember hearing that last years team would have been much different with Adam Smith.

Playing with a guy like Eric Green it absolutely would have been. Right now, there is no one on the roster with that much talent or dedication. Having a guy like Adam would have free'd up Green from triple teams and Will Johnston wouldn't have played nearly as much as he did last year. This team suffers a lot from tiny heart syndrome, which is the biggest reason I was more excited for women's basketball this year than men's. They have a shot at post season play, which is something the men's team is far from.

If Erick Green and Adam Smith had played together in our backcourt last year, we would have given up 100 points a game (I'll give you we may have won one or two more games, but I don't see it). The problem with the basketball program right now isn't a lack of heart, effort, or dedication. The problem is talent.
People can bring up that clearly something is off with the effort in offseason work/practice effort/chemistry, and they're probably right. Barksdale being suspended, Raines being in the doghouse, and Rankin leaving the team all point towards a problem in one or more of those areas. BUT, even if you have all 3 of those players playing full time, Virginia Tech still has a bottom-feeder in the ACC. Rankin and Devin Wilson (currently) aren't ACC caliber points guards. With time, and a lot of work on his jump shot, Wilson potentially could be. Barksdale is a decent contributor for an ACC-level team and Raines has been wildly inconsistent in his time here and while he has shown signs of hope, he has never proven himself to be anything more than a big body. With all of the attrition that has hit the program, regardless of effort or dedication to the team, there's just not enough talent in Blacksburg.

Eric's D lacked last year because he was gassed from being the entire offense. Even if they gave up more points, they still would have been competitive with a more up tempo offense. JJ has started to lean on the Greenberg stall ball 'offense' in order to keep games close. At this point it's all semantics anyway, just like arguing this years team would have a couple more wins with Malik or Rankin in the rotation.

The problem with the basketball program right now isn't a lack of heart, effort, or dedication. The problem is talent.

I agree there is a lack of talent, but even with the roster that is being fielded, you should never lose to UNCG, USC Upstate, and even this year Seton Hall should have been a win. Just watch a practice right now and you can tell the team has pretty much packed it in. Raines locker was cleaned out, Wood has a lackadaisical effort in practices, players are starting to bicker at each other and there really doesn't appear to be a clear leader most of the time. Barksdale is the best all around player and he is a "contributor" player, not a "star" player.

In order to start bringing higher quality players JJ is going to have to win with a scrappy team first, which he is having a difficult time doing right now. This was always going to be a barely scratch out 10 win season. Next year with this group of freshmen maturing and getting some depth at the guard spot, we should start to see some turn a round. If we don't then it may be time for the new AD to start looking at someone that can guide this program. We are never really going to land 5* recruits, so whoever the coach is, is going to have to learn how to win with fringe players in one of the better conferences.

I agree that we do have the talent to beat UNCG and USC Upstate, but that's not saying really saying anything.
As far as JJ goes, I think he's out after next year. Barring a massive turn of events, even with a few decent recruits coming in next year, the team still has the look of a bottom-feeder in the league. I don't blame JJ for most of the problems as he was dealt a pretty poor hand. Coach K couldn't coach this team to more than a .500 season.
My biggest problem with JJ is him never playing his "brand" of basketball. I understand that the numbers are low and people have left, but how you can expect players to buy-in to you and your coaches as a staff when you repeatedly sit in front of the media and tell them that you just don't have a good enough team to play basketball how you would like to play it. How can you expect athletic, long, quick players that have great defensive potential to come to Virginia Tech when all they see is an average tempo game after game. I get that we can't press Syracuse, but why can't we press USC Upstate? Why can't we press teams that we are clearly better than, even if only to show our current players and future recruits that we actually mean it when we say we want to play an up-tempo, pressing, exciting brand of basketball?

We need to work on some fundamentals including free throw shooting. I am not a huge fan of the three point game, when you live by the three, you more often die by the three. I would like to see some more inside play from our big guys and more work on the glass. We started the season with a really high number of blocks and rebounds, lets get back to that play.
