Fuente said TE James Mitchell is fine. Might be a little bit sore. Took a shot to his thigh/leg area on a run in the first half. #Hokiesβ Andy Bitter (@AndyBitterVT) September 11, 2021

Honestly, and if you read French's reviews, he's been off the first 2 games. He could have been playing with a bad ACL and not know it. A hit elsewhere tore it. It's a possibility.

Unfortunately you are correct, this is the downside to coming back to school and why kids don't come back to school, I feel bad for James because he's such a great person and a hard worker, he will bounce back

Didn't watch much last year so I don't know if it normal but I really like Eddie in the booth. He was one of the mainstay jerseys in the stands when I was inhabiting east and I really liked his takes.
That said I would have love to hear more shade from him on:
1. Comparing current players to who was on his roster (not in a bad way but like tying it back to the good ole days for us early-mid 30 year olds), and
2. Lean into the LOLuva and WVU hate a bit more (he let a bit slip on uva but he was "too worried about is career" /s
In case he wateches our boards: I loved watching you play and I loved listening to your analysis, good luck Eddie.

I can't remember ever ordering anything that wasn't a Tugboat. Hell, I'm not sure I ever looked at the menu for other options. That was a hell of a sandwich.

He was really good, considering it was his first game. Though not sure if it's his voice, mic placement, EQ or what, but it wasn't super easy to hear him, especially compared to his co-host. Hope they can get that worked out.

Some quick hits from Fu's post game press conference - sounds like he really was behind the passing game opening up in the second half. Said he wants to watch the film and get Braxton more comfortable pulling the trigger throwing down the field. Sounded like he told the O to open things up a bit more in the second half and it worked. I like those kind of comments.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
That's all well and good but why did the head coach have to tell "the O to open things up a bit more" at halftime; i.e. why didn't Cornelson recognize what everyone with eyeballs and a brain stem saw, and open those things up earlier, as in the 2Q?
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
I swear bc must have some real leverage over Fuente. I don't understand how a good xs and os guy can look at our offense and think everything is fine. Make it make sense

I wasn't charting every play, but it felt like every play in the first half was one of three things:
1) Read option that wasn't going to work because Burmeister isn't keeping the ball;
2) Horizontal pass within 3 yards of the LOS that wasn't going to work because MTSU had everyone near the line;
3) Half-assed fade pass near the sideline that wasn't going to work because Burmeister wasn't close to the field.
It was a rough watch. Second half saw some actual downfield throws and using Blumrick to run the offense opened up things on the ground.

OMG that sack by Conner! He's didn't have to take one step to slow down and change direction and planted a perfect hit on the QB. The QB's helmet popping off and rolling 15 yards was ice cream on the pie (team in pie 4lyfe)

To the imbeciles in the game thread that were desperately trying to create a rift in the fanbase after one quarter, go jump in a lake. You're the problem. Same vermin trying to get Beamer fired in '92. Allow me.......
to be honest I feel like everyone just WANTS that video game style Clemson or Bama level of f-stuff up, but we're a growing team and the coaches are clearly taking it slow.
Defense in the first half was obviously playing soft to bait for later in the game (from the coach, as Eddie said the players wanted to eat, paraphrasing)
I'm with you, the coaches are scheming based on situations and overall I like that as long as they make the adjustments when they need to. And also i don't think the 'needs stand a chance.

Not sure I can say we are a growing team. It's year six for this staff with a roster full of upperclassmen that they recruited. They should at least be able to open things up more on offense. Fu even acknowledged as much in his postgame presser. Watching this offense called by Corn makes me nervous. It's just almost scared to take a risk. I can imagine how the QB feels at times.
I'm hopeful we see things open up after the second half today. We have some playmakers, we just have to take some shots and get the ball to them.

QB room shake up, RB Room Shakeup, DB shakeup, D line shakeup, barely a WR LB and OL core from last year (and as much as people want to say IT COUNTS!!!! I don't know how you can honestly look at the last year and say that anything really counts)
This is the first chance Jham has had to really get the D going and it is. offense is a bit of the same ole' maybe i'm ok with that as long as the D is holding folks down.
I'm looking at the players on the field not how the staff could have built depth better - you have to work with what you've got and for the first time in a while i like how the coaches are handling what they've got.

Agree with the defense, but this O has a lot of experienced players on it who have been in the system a while. Burmeister is now in his third year in the system. I'm not saying we should be a juggernaut, but it's pretty evident we need to open up the playbook a bit more.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
couldn't agree more, i'd love to see them taking chances.
Put yourself in HBC's spot regarding risk management. you doing that if you don't trust your D?
I think D has started proving itself. I'm hoping that this has been slow playing and when it starts to "matter" we'll all start having fun.

At one point Burmiester was 10-17 for 54 yards. For reference, last year, Herbert was 7.6 ypc and Hooker was 5.2 ypc running the ball. That is a terrible stat line for a QB. And its not all on Burmeister. He finished the game 4-7 for 88 yards. We have to be better than 5.4 yards per completion.
In 2020 Burmiester was 8.9 ypa, last week 8.9 ypa. To after a really nice finish 5.9 ypa. We have to do better than that.

We covered the spread even though it doesn't feel that way with some responses. I think sometimes a directional school comes to Lane in September and fans that don't know any better think that directional school is on par with FCS. Then those same fans talk themselves into a scenario where we should be winning by 50. I will take covering in this one with a UNC hangover.
Offense was weird first half. I think some are misinterpreting that Fuente changed up the game plan 2nd half, but the head coach knows the game plan going in. It felt to me like we simultaneously went vanilla, rotated a lot of players early, were scared of cutting passes loose, and generally looked a little sluggish. 2nd half looked better.
Defense has shown a lot of positives. Worried that the pass rush we had for UNC dried up a bit. Overall feel like defense is ahead of expectations.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
I think we showed a lot less looks this week up front. The first team defense gave up 7 points on an incredible TD reception that only happen after a bad 3rd and 10 play from two DBs.

Fam! I'll have to watch this game this week after having a frustratingly awful internet connection to listen to the game in spurts experience. We won, we covered (I think) and it wasn't a nailbiter as far as I can tell. I just hope we can go to Morganhole and smoke the cousins in their fucking mouths this week! LET'S GO!

Missed the game for a flight home, but got to keep up with the score. Then watched when we got back last night. Love the way Royal hyped up the fans helping JHam bring the Terror back to the terror dome.

First half offensively and defensively was brutal. Kick/punt returns was very good though.
As for the O - I would assume that Cornelson got some marching orders to keep it simple in the first half - Ie don't show the playbook. Fuente had him open up the playbook in the second half which led to a much better O performance.
The DBs got burned a few times 1 v 1. Would love to clean that up.
Good W. On to the Mountaineers.

I don't really understand the theory behind "keeping it simple" or not "opening the playbook". I remember one of the reasons I was excited about Fuente's offense back in 2015 was because there can be so many different plays out of one formation. Even with the same pre snap motions there can be multiple options for where the ball can go. It would make more sense to me for the coaches to try getting as much of that on film as possible to force opposing teams to work harder to prepare. Just the mere threat of different options could cause defenders to hesitate, thus making them vulnerable to a big play.

"A wins a win, it no matter how it won" -Popeye.
If we win ugly every week I'll be happy at the end of the year.
Winning by double digits isn't a given based on scores so far this weekend. I'll take it.
The tea is 2-0! I promise to stick to it next week as well. Saving a lot of money on beer, brandy and bourbon too.
Let's go beat the cousins and bring the Black Diamond trophy home, again.
FAM
Again and AGAIN and AGAIN!
Win your clunkers fam!
FAM! Hopefully all the dinged up players are ready to go next week! 2-0 and on to Morganhole!
The Hokies remain undefeated! FAM!
FAM I REALLY HOPE WE FIGURE OUT HOW TO PASS THE BALL.
Any win is a good win! No one got hurt. Backups got playing time. Bruce Arians showing off that massive super bowl ring! FAM!!
Beat the Cousins next week!
But damned if we didn't try to.
Any word on Mitchell? I didn't see him back in....
Getting word from reliable sources that he tore his ACL.
It didn't look like that type of injury. I hope your sources had a misunderstanding.
Honestly, and if you read French's reviews, he's been off the first 2 games. He could have been playing with a bad ACL and not know it. A hit elsewhere tore it. It's a possibility.
yikes! how reliable? what kind of sauce
Very reliable. Looks to be confirmed now unfortunately.
Well shit
by whom tho
His father and him directly.
Are we sure that they are reliable sources though?
Unfortunately you are correct, this is the downside to coming back to school and why kids don't come back to school, I feel bad for James because he's such a great person and a hard worker, he will bounce back
Oh wtf
We need a Waller pick in the gifatory so I can see the play FAM!
Fam watching Blumrick run was like watching a beautiful graceful deer out there
That fake reverse play was beautiful
So where can I find the most comprehensive highlight video?
This is probably your best bet - its the condensed game. Its about 20 minutes long.
Fam! Took care of business, ultimately.
Sometimes the FAM isn't pretty. But an ugly FAM is better than no FAM. FAM!
I'll take it, 2-0 FAM! Some issues to work out but a win is a win. Let's beat the 'Eers!
Bruce Arians in the broadcaster's booth for 1 play and it's a TD!
FAM
Fam Bruce was feeling right
Do you think Arians would like to come back every Saturday and call plays? Just thinking out loud.
"Crappy first half, solid second half is waaay better than the alternative". - 2016 Arkansas football team
Jesus after watching Belima coach Illinois today I still don't know how he's the head coach anywhere
Say that louder for people who said he would make a good fit at Tech.
I don't remember his name being mentioned by anyone. Was that ever a thing?
For some reason yes I remember brining up his second half record and ridiculous amount of penalties in argument
How 'bout them hoggs tonight....wooo pig!!!! Welcome to the SEC Texas!!! You sure this is what you want?
I mean, after winning all those Big XII titles, they needed a new challenge so yeah

Just keep on wining Fam! Go Hokies!
FAM! Only a 1.5 hour stomach ache today! (As opposed to the usual 3)
Also what is Mitchell's status? The Governor looked awfully gimpy after he went down.
Postgame said he is fine.
Buckle your seatbelt.
fam!

I have no complaints. In fact...

Eddie just joined the ACCN this season and this was his first game in the booth.
Royal is new in the booth this year. Last year he was in the Eagles organization working with the WRs.
The Sycamore story was cool too. Though I didn't know till today that it had closed
Oh yeah sycamore was huge then, sad its gone but thus is life.
can't say I ever got the royal, but that's cuz I'm more of a pastrami on rye kinda fella.
I can't remember ever ordering anything that wasn't a Tugboat. Hell, I'm not sure I ever looked at the menu for other options. That was a hell of a sandwich.
Tugboat Tuesday was my jam
The Meatball sub (forget the name) was me/roomie's jam 2001-2005; and we used to get our kegs there too.
He was really good, considering it was his first game. Though not sure if it's his voice, mic placement, EQ or what, but it wasn't super easy to hear him, especially compared to his co-host. Hope they can get that worked out.
If this season is Sean Glennon 2.0 I honestly don't care how ugly it gets if we win.
The defense looks good, we won, I'm drunk... what more can you ask for?
This really does feel like one of those late 200s's Beamer teams. Glad it's not just me.

Agreed. But, progress nonetheless.
FAM for Fuente getting hands on with the Offense.
I think the change of success in the 2nd half had much more to do with JF than BC
I swear bc must have some real leverage over Fuente. I don't understand how a good xs and os guy can look at our offense and think everything is fine. Make it make sense

FAM nice second half but I'm feeling a bit nervous about next weekend now.
The hokies won. Let all the children say FAM!
The defense played great in the first half. Let everybody say FAM!
Offense found rhythm in the second. Let everybody say FAM!

We followed up a big win over a top 10 team by not completely shitting all over ourselves in the next game and actually had a comfortable win.
Thats not even a baby step, that's legitimate progress!
