Hey all. Headed to the 'Burg for the first time in many years for the Pitt game. Just a few questions here I'm hoping Hokie Nation can help me out with:
1) How far away do I need to park for it to not be insane to find a spot? Could I find a spot without to much difficulty at, say Harrell St.? Otey St.? Farther out?
2) Kickoff at 3:30, when should I get to Lane to at least take in some of the tailgate scene? (Or did COVID kill tailgating?)
3) Hypothetically of course, how difficult would it be to get a flask in through security?
4) Any other random tips?

Finding a Parking Pass for sale is 100% worth it especially if you have a desire to tailgate.
I think Lots open at 7am generally for tailgating. If you find a parking pass take advantage of the full time IMO
Not that hard. Airplane bottles are easier imo.

I haven't been to lane in years, but wanted to talk up airplane bottles from an ease standpoint:
1) Not metal so no issues with metal detectors
2) Easily carry multiples so if one is found you still have some.
3) If you are found out you are out a flask, just a plastic bottle.
On the con side, reusable is better and less use of throwaway plastics is better. And not all brands make airplane bottles.
I, very recently, smuggled in a full glass handle of liquor.
I do not know how this contributes to the conversation, but I like to brag about it.
Any smaller container's worth of liquor should be a breeze, just don't act dumb or obvious about it. Usually around sensitive places they'll never go near, and if they do...
I had a lot of success getting a flask of *water* in whenever I tried. I would put it right underneath my belt and never got stopped.

Hypothetically, I really only exist pre-entrance and post-entrance.
Going through the gate I like to ride in the small of the back, inside the waistband. Keeps me safe, warm, and secure for the perilous journey through the gates.

Tucked inside loose fitting boots that your pants go over is another easy one.
...or boot socks.
However, hypothetically, if one is wont to go the airplane bottle route there is really only one way...
1. Get you a pair of the longest, well-fitting socks you can get. (I've found the green, Army-issue, boot socks work wonderfully.)
2. Wear loose-fitting pants.
3. Stuff the socks with as many airplane bottles as you can. *IMPORTANT NOTE: Place the bottles on the back of your calves. If you put them all around the leg or on the front of the leg, it will not only be uncomfortable AF, but it will be much more noticeable.

*The taller you are the more AP bottles you can stow away. I'm 6'3" and have walked in with an entire 10-pack and then some.

When all else fails drag your wife, girlfriend, female friend, etc to the game. There are a few other options on the female body. There are places I recommend more than others, but all are very effective when necessary.
My wife goes with the under boob method. Works well other than the booze getting warm

There is tons of cash parking in the yards of various houses in the Houston/Harrell/Warren street area, along with some really good tailgating. there is also a huge student party in that neighborhood in between Houston/Center/Warren streets. The Blacksburg Lions Club has a great lot at the end of Warren.
Warning - it takes forever for that neighborhood to empty out after a game, so if you're not looking to set up your own tailgate, parking in the commuter lot off Prices Fork is a decent option, you have to (get to?) walk through campus over to the other tailgating lots & stadium. Some TKP regulars have a tailgate in Lot 18 (Smithfield Rd + Duck Pond Dr) if you're looking for some place to stop by
bonus tip... avoid the north east entrance to the stadium (next to the practice field/beamer barn), that is where students enter to sit in the north stands / east stands and it's... quite a scene

Yep....as someone who used to live on Houston St., the problem is not necessarily finding a spot to park, but getting out after the game.
There is no real order there, some "lots" (read: yards) were well thought-out while others were a total bottleneck.
I concur, Parking pass is the way to go.
Can you still park in the RV lot? used to be $20 per vehicle, but I don't know since they changed the road.
If you are talking about the 'Airport RV Lot' I think it's up to $25/car now. The walk is much longer ~ 1 mile along the runway fence and the Huckleberry Trail, but they have added a free gameday shuttle stop.
Its probably not cold enough but once the temperature drops then camelpaks of are simple to get too, they hold more.

If you are not looking to tailgate at your own car, I have found it is very effective to take your bike (if you can), park at one of the Krogers (depending on what side of campus you're at) and bike to where you want to go and lock it up.
It also helps with getting the F out of Blacksburg very quickly after a disappointing loss.
