No Love for VT at all:
The ACC is next up with four, with No. 20 Florida State and No. 25 Virginia joining Duke and UNC. The Big 12 has its Kansas-Texas-Baylor trio, while the Pac-12 (UCLA and No. 13 Oregon), Big East (Villanova and No. 24 UConn) and American Athletic Conference (No. 12 Memphis and No. 15 Houston) are the others with multiple Top 25 teams.
Watch list
The top unranked teams are all from power conferences, headlined by Michigan State as the leading vote-getter. Next up is Indiana under first-year coach Mike Woodson, Southern California and Arizona under new coach Tommy Lloyd.

I'm OK with that.
Pre-season rankings aren't worth the electricity carrying the information.
I agree to some degree, but I thought we would be around #20 based off previous polls and the people we have coming back.
It's a fair point, but let's see how they play. I'd rather come in underrated.
We should have an early chance to prove our value with #12 Memphis and #24 St. Bonaventure early on in the season. I could really use some excitement for VT sports right about now...
Shouldn't be too surprising. Idk how Ken Pomeroy sets up his pre-season rankings/analytics, but his sytem us at #39.
We have lots of potential with that starting lineup (3 5th year seniors + 2 juniors! and all talented) but there is no one proven on the bench. If we stay healthy and bench guys step up, we can make a run. If not, probably only a slight improvement on last year, which would be in line with a bit outside the top 25.
FYI KenPom has said do not value his preseason rankings.
Others receiving votes:
Michigan State 87, Indiana 41, USC 30, Arizona 26, Virginia Tech 25, Oklahoma State 25, Xavier 22, Texas Tech 17, Richmond 13, Rutgers 11, Colorado State 11, LSU 7, Belmont 7, San Diego State 5, St. John's 5, Mississippi State 5, Syracuse 5, Drake 4, Colorado 4, BYU 3, Notre Dame 3, Louisville 3
Exactly where I like to be. On the radar, not ranked pre-season. Can move into the rankings with some quality wins.
Edit: Yikes! Didn't think it was that serious. My main point was/is praise and full confidence in CMY, his staff & the team to jump into the top 25 in no time.
Let's not take potshots at the state of the football program in basketball threads
Wh-huh?

Oh, sorry dude [serious about the sorry part. Changed the comment. I'm just being funny with the pot shits reference]. Also, the reference wasn't about the state of the football program, just the comparison and contrast of the coaching staffs.
Good.
UVa at 25?... numerous new players (as in how will they run a packline that others have said takes a year + to learn), a couple of transfers and Kehei Clark being the only real threats... not seeing it.
Kehei Clark is back? He feels like an 8th year player.
But if there's no love, wasn't there an article about the team being a darkhorse pick for the final four?
I guess a very dark horse.
But, you know, it's early yet.
They have a lot of youth/transfers on that roster so 25th shocked me. But I prefer us at the darkhorse anyway.
While surprising/frustrating, a lot of us feel good about this team. If we're right they have many opportunities to prove it on the schedule.
Interesting that we've been ranked in basically every 'way too early Top 25' up until about a month ago until we somehow weren't.
Very odd, either everyone knows something that we don't, or it kind of just validates that the whole system of polls is dumb and stupid and should have been abolished years ago.
And not "just in" either. A lot of the preseason rankings out there had us in the 15-20 range easily. Even after the dip when Radford left.
Yep. Curious that we suddenly when the media as a whole starts to get involved, and not just national writers, our profile is buried. Almost like the good ol boys club of AP Voters have an agenda.
The big media has an agenda of creating controversy, interest, and viewers/readers. It's their job. Or they don't really do their own research or analysis, and no-one handed them a list of bullet point to read on the air before voting, so they just voted for the same teams they always vote for, and know one cares because pre-season rolls are only there to draw viewers/readers to the sport before it starts.
I agree. I'm just saying that its rare to see it happen this blatantly
Browsed the CBB Reddit thread over the rankings, and one very common thread was a bit of 'wtf' over VT not being ranked, including UVa posters who were openly admitting it doesn't make sense, especially to have them ranked and us not. Its rare that everyone can smell the BS.
You realize these are different people, right? It's not some conspiracy, the voters just aren't necessarily the same people writing those "way too early" columns. We did get some votes though, so clearly some people still held us in that regard.
ACC preseason poll is out. VT in the top third and Aluma getting first team and player of the year love.

Good motivation for the coach and players plus pre-season rankings are crap anyway. Also hopefully we destroy a ranked hoos team at some point...
Just win and everything else will take care of itself. I love getting preseason hype, but it's pretty meaningless and by the end of the season we'll have sorted it out. I have a lot of confidence in this team.
Doesn't mean a whole hill of beans, but Dickie V doesn't have the boys in his "top 40" either.
At least the polls have us at 28th.
Bring it!
That won't last long. I expect them to come out swinging this year.
I am fine with the non ranking. I expect Mike Young to use that in his motivation talks to the team. "They are disrespecting us men!"
