Uniform Reveal - MV7 Era Throwbacks

Finally what tons of folks have been asking for (I think?). Hope they aren't wasted this weekend against Syracuse.

I love how we wait until NOW to bring these out....This may be my only reason I watch on Saturday

Gotta pull out all the stops when the job's on the line.

If you play it, they will win.

LOVE IT!!!!! New primary uniform please!!

I hope they sell them.

Great choice.

Love it.

I don't hate the stripes, but these show that solid maroon is also a thing of beauty.

My name is MaroonX2 and I am erect. These are beautiful.

Fire Whit.

Nitpick time....

The font on the #5 is wrong. It needs to be pointed...

Just something to fix when we do this again next season, for every home game.

As I said below, the numbers are also a little too thick on this throwback, but I guess that's what we get for a 1-off.

If we wanted them as a full-time set, we might be able to get it closer to what we expect.

"When I was growing up, Virginia Tech was a school that was kicking ass and taking names, and it's time we get back to that" - James Franklin

They really looked at it and said, "We can't give them a winning football team lets give them the jerseys they've been clamoring about!"

Well, something to be excited for

Shouldn't we be expecting some MV7 children to play for us in the not too distant future? Would be nice symmetry to go with these unis...

These should be the uniforms for the rest of the year. Very over the shoulder stripes.

But seriously...we decide to wear them the week we are on RSN????

MAKE THESE OUR NORMAL UNIFORMS

Its worth pointing out that we're also ditching the helmet stripes this week as well.

Looks sharp, very clean uniform. We went overboard with stripes the last decade.

I'm gonna get so much heat for this but I'm not a fan of these unis. Guess I'm so used to shoulder stripes I see these and I'm like ehhhhh

I mean, I get that. Change is scary. No judgement from me.

I hate the shoulder stripes though, so this is a refreshing change for me.

As someone who's been wanting fu gone for a couple years I'm not afraid of changeπŸ˜‚. I think it's because my height of being a hokie football fan was 2008-2012 and I remember those uniforms more than 99 cause I was only 2πŸ˜‚

But from 2008-2009 we had our best (my unbiased opinion) uniforms ever, not including the one off jerseys we used to get when VT was one of Nikes favorites.

I liked the original ACC jerseys in the top picture but absolutely hated the bottom jersey. What makes the bottom even worse is it 100% did not translate to the fan jerseys and made the fans look terrible.

I'm going to catch downvotes for this, but I vastly prefer the current unis compared to both of these. The super thin orange stripe on maroon may be my least favorite jersey ever. It just looks dinky.

IMHO we should have jumped on the broad shoulder stripes earlier, or kept with the MV7 look over the last 20 years.

I found TKP after two rails from TOTS then walking back to my apartment and re-watching the 2012 Sugar Bowl. I woke up the next day with this username.

Agree

Free Hugh

For me, the top jerseys with the orange pinstripe are the best ever. Hate the shoulder stripes.

They're just kind of boring to me. I'm a fan of the jerseys with the piping and the Orange Sided jerseys more that someone else posted.

:-)

I believe the maroon is also the correct shade on these as well. Less purplish.

TEAM DARK RED MAROON

Someone in the know over on 247 (non-paywall) said they were originally going to wear these against Richmond with maroon pants. They had to delay because they realized the maroon on our current pants and these jerseys didn't match. Lol.

this is the superior maroon

Oh hell to the yes!!!!

I want to buy one. Can I buy one? I want one. #2 for Waller.

Ah the ol' "Remember We Used To Be Good Effect" game.

Everyone gets hammered drunk and reminisces about the good times. Then if the game isn't going well, they just play an old Michael Vick game from Hokie Tapes on the jumbo tron.

No we never had we used to be good effect games because stealing the "effect" game idea from A&M was the downfall of hokie football.

Dang, they really tried to absolutely nail these, but it sounds like Nike just wasn't really willing to help us out much

As that's the ACC logo, that may have needed an ACC approval.

Would have been super-cool, though.

Oh hell yes!!! I love the stripe-less maroon helmets. Wouldn't it be true to say we've sucked ever since getting the racing stripe on the helmet?

Looks like I'm wearing my old Kevin Jones jersey for the game this weekend

"When I was growing up, Virginia Tech was a school that was kicking ass and taking names, and it's time we get back to that" - James Franklin

I've got a Lee Suggs jersey from this era. Will be doing the same.

My wife has my Suggs jersey. I've got a Tyrod jersey that I'll be wearing

Never Forget #1 Overall Seed UVA 54, #64 UMBC 74

I'll also be wearing my Tyrod **cough** Marcus Vick **cough** jersey

I feell like Tyrol saved a lot of people money on replacement jerseys

Edit: Tyrol? I hate phones.

I'm still figuring this out.

I'm a little sad because we only have one more home game to wear these after Cuse. Although we could wear them vs GT since they wear home whites. Seriously make these the official uniforms, get the white away versions made, and an orange alternate with maroon numbers on the sleeves.

Honestly... This.

The alternate color numbers on the sleeves was such a unique thing which made those uniforms simplistic and complex at the same time. Only thing I would recommend is maybe a VT on the collar like we do now. Outside of that?

Yeah, bring these back full time. Though, with the actual number fonts we used back then (numbers were a bit thinner, as well as the point on the 5s). Proportions on the thickness of the numbers and stripes around the numbers should equal the proportions on our logo and the stripes around them.

These need to be permanent. No debate. Whit just do it!

Go for it

I can't say anything that hasn't been said already...make them permanent....they waited until fan apathy was almost at its peak....Fuente kept these on the back burner for when he knew his ass was really on the line.

Anyhow they're the best uniform look we've had since that Orange Effect uni from 2017. Sucks I may not be able to see them because of the game being on RSN, hopefully they turn the tide.

Ya this is what I want to see

We couldn't have worn these back in '16 when we were actually pretty good? Regardless, I love these and glad we're finally bringing them back.

I am the heartbeat of Blacksburg. A fortress built out of stone but made with champions.

Reading through some of the comments and replies on twitter, I'm getting strong signals that this might be our uniform in 2022 and beyond.

"When I was growing up, Virginia Tech was a school that was kicking ass and taking names, and it's time we get back to that" - James Franklin

Yes but in true VT fashion, we would return the jerseys that we all want to see and then pair them with this helmet:

I found TKP after two rails from TOTS then walking back to my apartment and re-watching the 2012 Sugar Bowl. I woke up the next day with this username.

Entire theme is throwback. I know the MC is wearing an OLD game jersey that a friend of mine lent him. They are prepping lots of old video clips as well.

1) THESE ARE AWESOME

2) People calling for these to be the regulars quickly forgot how we were all clamoring to replace these as they were not "flashy" enough and we wanted to be more like Oregon.

3) I love these

4) the chest patch is wrong, should say "BIG EAST"

5) I LOVE THESE

We put the K in Kwality

I don't remember anyone calling for these to change, then again that was pre Facebook and social media takeover so who knows

Go for it

Was Oregon changing jerseys every week back in 2002-2003? I didn't think that they started getting flashy until chip Kelly arrived in 2009 when he took them to the next level. We switched from these in 2004.

I dont remember Oregon being flashy in 2003 time frame. But I could be wrong. Joey Harrington seem boring to me.

Yeah, it was 2009 when it started, and hit full more in 2011.
Here's the different helmets worn over the years by them.

Seems like a big missed opportunity that these aren't for sale...

These are great but they won't be the same unless the band is allowed to play stick it in

An old Appalachian witch told Fuente these uniforms were the key to the 62-0 beat down of Syracuse in 99

That was a glorious day.

It was so glorious that E$PN cut away to a different game mid 4th quarter before our last score or two because we were beating them so bad. I remember this cause i was away and had taped the game and watched it later that night.

My wife takes the kids and leaves the house while I watch my Hokie games.........nuff said

I remember that because my mom flipped her shit when they switched it over.

Since these unis commemorate those worn by the '99 Hokies team, will Fuente keep with his custom and not talk to the team at all before the game??

Lol. It might actually help the team if he and Corny just ignore them completely

Onward and upward

The Hokie Bird chasing the Orange mascot with a straw would help as well.

I vividly remember seeing that exact moment in person as a student.

Behind the Scenes

Debbie Downer here - I'll get excited when the product on the field matches the '99-00 teams, and not just the uniforms.

Tayvion Robinson QB1 confirmed

Just can't stop commenting about these uniforms. I'm really hoping these become our permanent unis moving forward. This is the iconic VT football look to me. The 2004-2007 uniforms are a close second, but those remind me of our "we have arrived" attitude when we joined the ACC. This look is true VT football - we are going to show up and punch you right in the mouth. Simple, clean, and the orange shoulder numbers are just so unique. You see this and you know it's VT playing. Similar to Michigan and the winged yellow helmet, OSU and the buckeye stickers on the helmet, Bama and the helmet numbers, etc. Can't wait to see these back in action tomorrow.

The orange numbers are by far the best part. They do the job of the shoulder stripes to provide our secondary color without being a cookie cutter feature that's on a dozen other schools' jerseys.

Last ditch effort to bring fans to the stadiumπŸ˜‘πŸ˜‘. But that being said I do like them 😍

Danny Coale down the right side line

I never, ever, understood why we changed them away from these in the first place. We were too busy trying to be Oregon when all we should have wanted was to be Virginia Tech.

Yes, this.

The uniforms that were worn a half century ago at ND, Alabama, Oklahoma, Texas, Michigan, PSU are still the uniforms they are known for today. Instantly recognizable.

I think these are the unis that are recognized as us.

Case in point - I remember seeing a SportsCenter highlight of Duke beating some team at their home court with a half court buzzer beater and thinking 'Damn sucks to be them'. Then they flashed the score and it was us. I didn't even recognize my own team on the court.

Different sport for sure, but damn I'm supposed to be able to recognize my own and our uniforms just couldn't do it.

These may be the best thing to come from this season and it's not even close THEYRE FUCKING PERFECT

Directions from Blacksburg to whoville, go north till you smell it then go east until you step in it

Confirmed. Hokies by 4 TDs.

Love it, love it, LOVE IT! So wish this would be our standard home uniform and never change. Oregon is a West coast wannabe, the big dogs stick with a standard home uni for a good reason, it's their recognized brand and they show it off. Give me this design and color Ad Infinitum.

VTCC '86 Delta Co., Peru Hokie, Former Naval Aviator, Former FBISA, Forever married to my VT87 girl. Go VT!

I've wanted to see these come back for YEARS. They're the best of the uniforms we've worn. They need to be permanent. The stripes on the current uniforms are f'ing goofy and the stripes leaving the helmet is a good thing.

I can't upvote this enough. The helmets w/o the stripes are so tough

I'd love for these to become permanent like everyone else but the "nasa" numbers were such a huge part of our overall athletics rebrand beyond even football that I have a hard time seeing it happen.

If that's true then hopefully at the very least they can compromise and give us a "modernized" version of this that is the same jersey with the modern numbers (basically the UNC orange jerseys everyone liked years ago).

Honestly, if the compromise is this style with the current number font (with throwback outline and current hokiestone subliminal pattern) with the alternate color shoulder numbers, I'd consider that good enough

"When I was growing up, Virginia Tech was a school that was kicking ass and taking names, and it's time we get back to that" - James Franklin

can we change the font to wingdings to confuse every one?

Or the very least comic sans to enrage people?

it just dawned on me... when these unis were last used every member of the current roster was either still in diapers or wasn't even born yet...

So...uh....what are the odds we get the old school endzone logos too? You know the ones I'm talking about.

He said give to me Roscoe

We better get a stick it end chant, you hear me Cornelson!

The jerseys are nice but I want the 90's-2011 attitude that went with the jerseys. I want the players built like those men were during that time frame. Slowly but surely more guys on the roster have what I call the "noodle armed dingaling build" and it shows on the field for example Pitt was able to get that extra push for a first down and the Hokies couldn't. Against WVU and ND they couldn't score from inside that 5 and the teams from the 90's-2011 not only looked like men but were treated like men and played with an attitude. I see our team as of lately as kids being treated like kids and Fuente and co. acting like parents and not treating the guys like men but just constantly treating them like kids. I remember Fuente even saying on game day the guys aren't allowed to even talk at breakfast. I miss the Vicks, Williams, Wilson, Ore, Marshall, Journell...etc. attitudes on the team. Yeah the suspensions that some of those guys got sucked but these guys were men and on offense, defense, and special teams there were guys who had a nastiness about them and a hardness that pumped up the fan base. Beamer and Foster were tough but let their guys be men and not kids. The teams of the past were "hard, tough, and nasty attitude". I'm not asking to lose legs on here but along with the new look jerseys I want a new attitude that definitely won't happen under the current staff at least as far as cornfu goes.

FIRST DOWN, HOKIES!

I've thought similar things about the items you mentioned. My perception of the team's mental attitude and my perception of their physical build and perceived efforts has been an unspoken observation, but I thought it was just my disappointed imagination.

...with spirits true and faithful...

Every time I see Hoffman I think of your noodle arm comment. He is supposed to be our nastiest lineman, but when you see his arms, it looks like he has never lifted a weight in his life. We need Jake Grove to come teach these guys how to be nasty in the trenches.

1-0 every week

Really highlights how much our maroon color had changed. I want the dark angry purple maroon back . A little too much red in the current color

Free Hugh

Love them. Blown away. Also, why didn't we open with these against UNC? I really hope they become permanent. Can we please remove GRIT from the helmets until the team shows it? Or get it tattooed on Fuente's forehead so he can remind himself to do better at coaching.

You will see this game, this upset and this sign next on ESPN Sportscenter. Virginia Tech 31 Miami 7

His decision was made after a phone call with longtime Virginia Tech assistant coach Bud Foster. All Foster told him was, "We win. They don't."

Have Pete hastily tattoo it so it ends up reading like #GIRT or something

Love seeing this but would love to see this in AME even more.

Don't let the loss distract you from the fact that these unis need to be back full time.

Yes,that's the Hokie Bird riding a camel. Why'd you ask?

Liked these a lot more watching the game than during the reveal. The helmets with no additional striping on it looked fantastic as well.

This to me makes this look for me. There's no fucking around with designs. Plain, simple, sleek.

I know it's a different era, but man, see THIS team in THOSE unis...
Well, they really didn't fill them out like the team in '99 (and all around that time) did. We looked small in them.

Pads are very different now. You don't see cowboy collars, neck rolls, rib protectors and other things you saw back then. Thigh pads and knee pads are smaller. Hip pads are virtually nonexistent. Advances have made things smaller. At the same time, they have just ditched extra protection in some area in favor of freedom of movement and light weight.

Sure, we may be a bit smaller at some positions, but it's not all players' size.

You mean players didn't have 42 inch diameter shoulders on each side back then?

Understand...but we just didn't look like the teams we used to have. Could be a product of the outcome, but I said it out loud to my wife in the first half when we were winning... arms, legs, just bulk.
