To be fair, I'll link to any good work. And French's o-line stuff (really, all of it) is the best film review stuff I've seen out there.

Nailed it. You always bring us great information firsthand or find us the best outside sources for VT news. For that, we thank you.

It's actually really smart. This site has a lot of hardcore Hokie fans. If he sees we're all discussing an important topic like Grime leaving and salaries he might as well dig deeper and use his skills. It makes everyone happy.

I do like to take the temperature of the fan base. And this is a great site for it. Somewhat less Chicken Little-ish than TSL. Somewhat.

I don't mind having my temperature taken. I would, however like to know what kind of thermometer you're planning on using.

This sucks!!

I really hope we don't lose him this quickly. This also isn't helping with the Brady Taylor situation.

Now...I worry. Morehead is only making about 150k....we are going to lose him if we don't bump him up also.

VHokie

probably not just yet, but once we get some of these 2014 recruits in and the passing game improves... yeah, I think Moorehead will start getting more interest.

For that matter, why isn't TG pulling more interest, and how long does that stay that way?

How does Louisville afford to pay its assistant coaches so much?

UVA: Jefferson's biggest mistake

Slip him a few beers and hand him the checkbook.

Take the shortest route to the ball and arrive in bad humor.

They have sold their souls to corporate sponsors in addition to selling copious amounts of alcohol at every athletic event.

Which raises a question, would people rather see less advertisements around Lane Stadium and on the side of the Jumbotron screen in exchange for giving up naming rights to the stadium or field? I'm just as attached to the name Lane Stadium as the next person, but what if it was Carillion-Lane Stadium?

Never give up the name of a stadium for money (from a business, if a graduate want's to donate millions for his name, I might listen). Put banners and TV's everywhere. Show all the advertisements possible on the jumbotron. Buy turkey legs from the 'AT&T BBQ stand', anything, but DO NOT SELL THE NAME OF THE STADIUM.

Well they kind of already did. Lane donated and raised the money for the stadium and Worsham has given millions to the school. How is that much different than Papa John's giving millions a year for the naming rights?

I'm pretty sure if it was called TOTS Stadium, nobody would be upset. #RailsAndTurkeyLegs

rich individual benefactors are cool and become part of our lexicon; soulless corporations are not cool.

Unfortunately those "soulless corporations" have the $ that keeps everything moving. Naming right are an easy place to get some great revenue.

Lane/Worsham (presumably) raised/donated the money because they love Virginia Tech and want to improve the university.

Papa John's just wants to advertise and only cares about how many customers they get as a result. Nothing wrong with that, but I'd personally just prefer not to sell one of our favorite buildings to a corporation.

exactly. I'm not some tree-hugging hippie, I enjoy my professional career believe me. But to me lets keep some distinction of tradition in college and leave that stuff for the pros.

But to me lets keep some distinction of tradition in college and leave that stuff for the pros.

I agree with you, but would you rather have tradition and fade away in oblivion or "sell-out" and keep competing? I hope it doesn't keep progressing like it is, but we will soon be at a crossroads where that question will need to be answered.

I would say that the alternative is that alumni start donating more so we aren't forced towards needing more corporate sponsorships.

I hear ya. Yesterday some of us were discussing the chart to this link:

http://www.teamspeedkills.com/2012/5/15/3021940/chart-revenues-profits-c...

It was one of the few times I actually completely changed my position on a major issue. I thought we were financially pretty solid and could compete with throwing money at coaches. But if you look at the schools that are actually below us on the profit axis, there are very few if any that I would aspire to be like, which was very sobering for me. I take that to mean that we would not be able to sustain that course of action and that the gap might continue to widen. More change at VT is needed to keep up and actually reclaim some ground we gained in the early 2000s, I feel the crossroads are already here.

i always chuckle when i watch a game at the kfc yum! center. i mean, if i'm a louisville fan, couldnt they have just left it at kfc center? you had to throw the 'yum!' in there?

it'd be like the colorado rockies playing at coors aaaahhh! field or the cowboys at at&t hello? stadium.

Yum! Is the name of the company. It's Yum! brands that owns KFC, Taco Bell, and Pizza Hut. An equivalent would be if the Rockies changed the name of their field to MillerCoors field.

you learn something new everyday. it's still a silly name for a basketball arena.

I'm ok with selling the stadium name to a corporation but only if the corporation is VT related. So, let's say some of our ChemEs and EEs build the next great energy company building the best solar panels on the market, ushering in a new era of energy generation. I'd be happy to have their name on the building.

I'd be pretty upset with the name change

If you can't handle my shit posts, you don't deserve my memes

I bet you would be, Lane Stadium. ;-)

I would be very upset as well.

The bottom of the article touches on just some of the intricate selling that the Louisville leadership have negotiated. Arena sponsored by the owner of Pizza Hut/ Papa Johns is the official pizza they sell in the arena. Papa Johns supposedly has contributed about $22 mil to the football stadium and holds the naming rights until 2040.
Also gives you some idea of the other schools that have resorted to naming rights.

One other of note on there is that Texas managed to get their BASEBALL stadium sponsored at almost $1mil per year over 15 years.

Read somewhere they have one of the highest atheltic budgets in the ACC. Also helps with the Papa Johns money.

I'm sorry for this, but...I CANNOT FUCKING BELIEVE THAT LOLUVAS ASSISTANT COACHES GET PAID MORE THAN OURS! SERIOUSLY, WTF!?!?

True Hokies STICK IT IN!!!

STICK IT IN Army of Virginia Tech

Fosterball

Virginia pulls in about $10 million more a year in revenue as an athletic department (mostly from donations). Bigger pot to work with.

AB cites the 1-N list of the revenue in his blog but I liked this USA version of it better because it allows you to see the revenue from 2006-2011. It also shows the breakdown of the categories of financing and costs. Its incredible how much some of these schools revenues have grown in the last five years.

http://usatoday30.usatoday.com/sports/college/story/2012-05-14/ncaa-coll...

*To see the extended data, you have to click on the + symbols on the far left of the list
Texas has grown $53mil from 06-11
UVA grew $26mil during this timeline.
Virginia Tech has grown only $18 mil in the same timeline.

It is amazing the surge in financing for college athletics during this time period.

Alabama's revenues actually doubled from 06 - 12. Seriously, it doubled... From $67 to $124. Expenses went from $60 to $105. VT's went from $48 to $66 in that time span and stayed basically consistent with the conference median.

In other words, we can probably guess as to the content of some interview questions for the candidates for new AD...

It’s later than you think.

Apparently, winning those national championships in fencing, or croquet, or whatever the hell, brings the money in.

didn't know this: "Loeffler and Grimes are due retention bonuses of $50,000 each if they are on the staff as of Jan. 1, 2015".

"Prorated for half a year, Tech will pay him that $200,000, plus the $159,000 for the first six months, for a total of $359,000."

Shouldn't that be 200k + half of 159k (79.5k) = $279,500 from VT (plus $170,500 from Auburn for a total of $450k on the year)?

Right, had that screwed up before. Was just trying to calculate VT's portion. Forgot to prorate the $159K. Should be correct now.

no turkey leg for your editor? ;)

Does AB follow Grimes to NOLA? Hokie Club needs to step up its game or else some big corporate donors need to be wooed. Did Weaver's illness hurt efforts at finding more money?

#Let's Go - Hokies

AD's, like any employees, have strong suits and weaknesses. It's fair to say that Weaver's strong suit is his financial management of the program and his weakness was fundraising. Frankly, so was Steger's.

I hope the new president and AD see that there is a significant avenue for improvement in fundraising on both sides of the house. On the bright side, we're in really good shape for having a sub-par fundraising arm....just think if we can get that together!

I would dispute that Steger could not raise funds. His fund raising campaigns were highly succesful. The funds primarily went towards academics and facilities.

#Let's Go - Hokies

Under Steger, Tech built 40 buildings. The man could raise money!

Research also flourished under new initiatives and money. Definitely an important component to Dr. Steger's legacy.

HC needs to go to a big local company like Norfolk-Southern or Advance Auto to see about some sponsorship money.

This is going to be great for the ACC.

Andy's analysis of the numbers does not lie and shows that there is some balance in VTs assistant salaries. Kudos to AB for that info. BUT, stepping back and looking at this from a bit further out shows a few things:

A. Key Assistants are becoming more and more a factor in CFB. That is starting to change the way you have to look at these salaries. Its a wave that is now hitting and its going to continue.
B. We have a few coaches whom are key to our success and they are getting noticed around the country. These to me are Bud, Torrian, and Grimes.
D. Grimes, being a newbie, is a bit of an anomaly for some of this logic I am trying to present reasonably. But the trend is still intact in my view.
D. If Grimes gets an LSU offer and VT doesn't at least counter to some degree and compensate the rest of the staff as well then we are going to see a rolling assistance coach train leaving Blacksburg.
E. That would be really, really bad.
F. Continuity matters and we need to let it gel - this will take at least 2 more years.

To me its time to invest in the future. Isn't that what businesses do? Yes for a year or 2 the bottom line would be "slightly" affected, but what does that bottom line look like if the above cited train leaves the station.... I can just see the revenue stream shrinking for as long as 10 years.

Are we in this CFB race or not? That is what you have to ask yourself....
We are at a turning point wiith this and in a few years with frank. I say it again:
Are we in this CFB race or not?

I'd say we are in, but the question is if the administration is in.

The answer is simple: VT is doing the best we can with the resources we have. There is a limited amount of money and I'm sure Frank Beamer will continue to have the authority to make staff decisions with that money. As I covered in recent days, it seems to me that VT will have to use a bit of a moneyball approach in that we have to be extremely wise in how we use our resources in order to compete with the giants of CFB. It can certainly be done, especially with a playoff becoming a reality, but that means we need to do a better job of identifying and developing talent, and that applies for both players AND coaches.

That being said, there's absolutely no evidence that a "rolling assistant coach train leaving Blacksburg" is on the verge of happening. I don't know if you're trying to stir the pot in the midst of today's chaos or not, but a dose of reality would benefit many posters on this board right now.

Joffrey, Cersei, Ilyn Payne, the Hound, Jeff Jagodzinski, Paul Johnson, Pat Narduzzi.

How about what Stanford does?
They ask individuals donors or groups of donor to sponsor individual things like the Hokie Club Virginia Tech Football Head Coach' s Chair or the Athletic training chair. It's not the actual chair but the position. So the Hokie club would sponsor the position for say, 10 years at $400,00 per year.
Or the John Does endowment for maroon uniform fun - sponsored t the tune of $50,000 / year for 10 years.
Or the Everyday Joe turkey leg stand - $2000/year for 5 years.
the Henrietta Hippo wild Tuba guys endowment for $xxx.xx to cover nutty tuba guy congo lines for 3 years.

You get the idea.

I tried to donate beer but found it it's actually illegal to do in Virginia.

This is going to be great for the ACC.

Whatever you do, DO NOT give tubas money to do "antics"

There's always a lighthouse. There's always a man. There's always a city.

There's really no need, they already do them for free.

Oh, I'm aware. I've got my four year mug, I know what they do. I just had a terrible vision of what would happen if someone gave them money in addition to what they already do for free.

There's always a lighthouse. There's always a man. There's always a city.

Remember the antics of Stanford's band? I would imagine that times 10 and more offensive.

If the MVs became like Stanford's band, I would renounce my alumni status.

There's always a lighthouse. There's always a man. There's always a city.

Either Dave or Dave's spirit from beyond the grave will NEVER let that happen

"The Big Ten is always using excuses to cancel games with us. First Wisconsin. Then Wisconsin. After that, Wisconsin. The subsequent cancellation with Wisconsin comes to mind too. Now Penn State. What's next? Wisconsin?" -HorseOnATreadmill

I turn off the tv if their band comes on during a game.

Oh no, we could no really up the antics.
Like by 4 or 5 more tubas.

This is going to be great for the ACC.

I think the solution is clear: one of us becomes the world's first trillionaire and donates an absurd amount of money to Virginia Tech. A large sum, of course, would be earmarked to our athletics (particularly football).

I selflessly volunteer myself to undertake this cause.

Well, I've been against this idea from the get-go, but I think we need to start selling alcohol at home games. So, as part of that effort, we should help Tim Smith get his legal moonshine product licensed in Virginia and sell it at the games. Bet that'll pep up the fans, even for noon games!

Actually, never met the guy. My grandpa on my dad's side got ran off by my grandma when she found out he was making shine again. So she ran him off and raised my dad, 3 brothers and a sister by herself. Grandpa ran off and had Tim and whoever else his family is, died, and never met me or any of his other grandkids on that side of the family.
