Definitely unfortunate to lose Grimes but I think it could still work out for us (believe it or not).
I'm thinking Stiney back to OL
S. Beamer to TE
...Go grab a real RB coach and rush like a muh-fugguh...

No. Todd Washington. Be swift and concise, Tech. We need this.
I don't want to rush into something, but we saw it coming for a few days. The quicker we settle this the better. Let's not lose any recruits now.
I agree. I'd hate to lose the recruits.
I hear this a lot. But can he recruit? Grimes demonstrated he could. Newsome could not. I don't think w could afford missing a cycle where we only get 1 (or 2) questionable recruits.
I'm sure TW is an awesome coach, but he's coaching professional lineman not college "projects" who probably need a lot of work on technique, etc.
From his Raven's bio:
2007-09: (with University of San Diego)
2009: Named USDs offensive coordinator...Toreros suffered significant injuries and lost seven games by an average of five points.
2008: Offense ranked first in the Pioneer Football League in scoring (35.3 ppg), total offense (405.4 ypg), passing (269.1 ypg) and pass efficiency (163.2 rtg).
2007: Entered coaching ranks as teams offensive line coach. Offensive line helped Torero offense average 44.3 points per game and 483.1 total yards per game...Two senior O-linemen (Jordan Paopao and Gabe DeAnda) were named to the All-PFL first-team...

the knock on Newsome wasn't that he couldn't recruit. By all he accounts, he most certainly could. He just couldn't coach them once they got on campus.
Just so those who have not tracked Newsome's performance over the years, he was hired from JMU because he was given a great deal of credit of recruiting the top players on JMU's national championship team. He started off with a bang by landing Tyrod. The rest of his record is spotty, with some highly rated guys, most of whom were flops. NOTE: VINSTON PAINTER WAS THE ONLY OL HE LANDED IN HIS TIME AT VT!!!
According to Rivals, Curt Newsome was the lead recruiter on the following players:
2012- JC Coleman, Der'Woun Greene, Alston Smith, Thomas Smith
2011- Dwayne Alford, Michael Holmes
2010- Nick Acree, Nick Dew, Dominique Patterson, Willie Byrn
2009- Telvion Clark, Tyrell Wilson
2008- Xavier Boyce, Marcus Davis, Randall Dunn, Lyndell Gibson, Tony Gregory, Joe Jones, Vinston Painter*
2007- Tyrod Taylor, Greg Nosal, Colin Carroll
Landing Tyrod almost makes up for everything else. Almost...
Wow, so sans Tyrod, Newsome was almost single-handedly responsible for our recruiting busts?
During Newsome's stay at Tech, we witnessed several top-rated Virginia OLs (other than Painter) go to UVA or leave the state entirely. There is no question in my mind that those kids (and their parents/coaches) saw through Newsome's bs and took their talent elsewhere.
This year we will have 6 senior OLs (and only 2 of those could see playing time). Zero Juniors. The rest are sophomores and freshman. Not a great recruiting story.
this i agree with. there was a video posted on tsl showing the footwork and technique improvements that grimes instituted. the poster showed 2 identical plays from the OL, one under Newsome and the other, properly executed, under Grimes. It was night and day.
Interesting, French wrote the same exact post.
You think Newsome couldn't recruit, but he was hired only because he could recruit. That was at the time where Groh was winning a lot of in-state battles, so Newsome was hired as a recruit-first coach and "we'll find him a position." He had only coached JMU's OL for one year prior, the national championship year.
Hiring Newsome was justifiable because he immediately brought in Tyrod, but we should have kept Stiney at OL and hired Newsome for TE's where he could do the least damage.
If you believe the hype that uniforms pull recruits, then what speaks louder than multiple championship rings.
Who does Leoffler want?
TODD WASHINGTON.
My thinking is if you shuffle the deck and move Stiney to OL, our current recruits can make a connection with him and stay(as he also happens to be a decent recruiter AND a pretty good OL coach if u remember). Then you move S. Beamer to a position that doesn't affect us as as much offensively (TE). RB recruits won't bail because he's still on staff. You hire a new RB coach to clean up the mess and voila!
as long as Loeffler is here, TE is definitely not "a position that doesn't affect us as as much offensively".
Key statement "as long as ... is here". The world of football coaching has changed. Long time coaches like CFB are an anomaly. He did not recognize when he needed changes to get over the top or when the situation was backsliding. Get prepared for lots of turnover in the coming years. How long will CSL remain at VT?
100% agree. We are used to staff stability that is unprecedented in present day college football and I don't see that remaining the case. Perhaps someone like a Lefty will stick around, but given that he has already been a pretty successfully HC at Temple and if he can turn our Offense around I can easily see him getting a head coach gig in the near future. This isn't necessarily a bad thing it just forces the HC to be a better coaching talent scout than Beamer has had to be.
I have to say, moving Stiney back to OL is something that doesn't sound all bad to me. He coached both OL and TEs at the same time before, he could do it again. Depends on whether they can make a better hire for RB or OL. And how they feel about a change of OL philosophy, if they can't find someone with similar ideas to what Grimes was teaching.
But as much as we like to theorize about CFB giving up special teams, letting Shane take that on, hiring a RB coach with playing experience there... I don't think CFB is all that interested in that approach. I think he'll go after an OL coach and leave everyone else where they are.
S. Beamer is a real RB coach. Just a reminder this past season was the FIRST one in Frank Beamers tenure that a RB did not fumble. Now, that's not everything but he's working with what he's got.
Wow, amazing stat. Now that I think about it, I don't recall a RB fumble.
The boxing glove on a stick must work.
i feel like we ran the ball (I should say our RBs ran the ball) a lot less than i can recall in all of Frank's time here at VT. Besides, LT was turning it over so frequently that our RBs didnt have time to cough it up. (Just kidding about LT...)
I'm not set against him. I'm not exactly sold on him, either, though.
That's a good point when you recall how our last three top RBs fumbled at the most inopportune times.
Evans fumbled during our last drive against {that CAA school who must not be named}.
RMFW fumbled against UNC to set up their game-winning FG in '09.
DMFW fumbled against Clemson to set up their first (or second, I forget) score in '11.
The running game and RBs will do better with a better line. Get a good OL coach and role with it. I am not so sold on Stiney being our #1 option
We just need to replace the OL coach...not shuffle everyone around and change everything. If we move Stiney and Shane then we are effectively starting the season with 3 new coaches.
Just get Cod Squashington and we are ready to roll...
Let's not worry about other positions, let's just find someone else to harden the tip of our spear.
Are you suggesting we hire Lane Kiffin's Wife?
See what you did there. That deserves a McGiggity.
I say we keep the rest of the continuity on the coaching staff and just get a new OL coach aka Todd Time.
This could be a blessing in disguise, now Loeffler can go pick the guy he wants bring him to CFB and say this is my man and no one else. Do whatever it takes to make sure we get him. That guy will probably be Todd Washington, it makes a ton of sense and just like the Grimes to LSU rumors took off there seems to be some TW rumors heading our way as well.
Just sit back and enjoy a new era for Virginia Tech football!!
Well, Grimes was Loeffler's guy. Beamer offered the OC position to Loeffler first, and Loeffler suggested bringing along Grimes because they worked well together at Auburn. Loeffler should definitely have input, but this wouldn't be the first time.
To the recruits: We still plan to play the same brand of smashmouth football. CFB and CSL will find someone to fit the mold.
Oh, did I forget to mention TODD WASHINGTON?
Scrapp, here's my thoughts.
A person doesn't coach for a school. He coaches for people. Grimes is really good at what he does, but in the hierarchy of people he's coaching for, I think Frank Beamer and the kids come below Jeff Grimes and his family.
We can't match the offer LSU gave and "win one for the Beamer" isn't going to inspire a Jeff Grimes to stay. Now we know.
Just need to take a breath and go find the guy we NEED. We can't do what SEC schools do. What we need is a guy who will coach for the sake of Virginia Tech and Frank Beamer. Someone who wants that crystal trophy for HIS SCHOOL.
Now go fucking get Todd Washington!
I agree with you bro...I tend to be pragmatic tho so I'll hold my excitement until TW is a done deal. My concerns are whether TW is truly willing to leave his current position for one. I'm also curious about what his current salary is, can we even come close to matching it? There are real questions at play here that set us up for a fall every time.
If TW is down, fine...if not, then it makes more sense to reshuffle the deck. We have a proven OL coach on staff as well as a very much unproven RB coaching situation. I see two problems that can get fixed for the price of one.
Wasn't todd w on vt ol staff as asst when our ol was good...back in the day?
could stiney coach both oline and tight ends? would that be too much to handle even with the ga's? for everyone saying move shane to tight ends, i feel like bringing on a full time special teams coordinator is a bigger need. i think beyond the maddening running back rotations (and i'm not sure who's making those decisions) i dont think shane has done a bad job. pride and joy however, have been bad for a few years now.
he's coached both the OL and TEs together before. They may think it's too much to do that again and be recruiting coordinator.
Right now there is (allegedly) one vacancy. It should be approached as filling that one position. I think shifting coaches around would be a step backward for the program and ultimately a mistake. Frank made some good choices last year...let's have faith that he can do it again!
I'd be ok with a staff rotation if we got a stellar coach and recruiter at another position.
Move Stiney to OL, Shane to TE's, hire a RB's Coach?
(Please don't say KJ, he's studying Industrial Design at VT, he's not in line to become a coach)
Fine. How about we offer the job to his dad?
OR Ken Oxendine or Lee Suggs. They both have coaching experience at the collegiate level.
It will be very interesting to see how Grimes does with a beast OL and one of the best RB commits in the country. I will be watching LSU and probably wishing that we at VT could have a beast OL and one day return to the promise land.
