Whit can we get some news please.
I know... someone start some flight tracker drama in the mean time?
Washington State promoted their interim to HC. Dickert
I keep refreshing hoping to get some news. Let's go Whit, we're ready!
One in 6 P5 jobs have changed hands
I think it's 50% change in 5 years. So basically half of all P5 players can expect to play for more than 1 head coach.
Turns out for coaches, that change is lucrative.
We're talking "they can afford Bitcoin" lucrative.
I would expect that it's higher than half of P5 players. You need to take into account coaches that go after 6-7 seasons, like Fuente.
And now with the transfer portal.
Currently
3029 coaches have completed 6 seasons or more at their school. Another 9 have made it 5EDIT: Stupid Brian "I killed a kid" Kelly
I have never used twitter this much. Ugh
It looks like a lot of the Matt Campbell smoke has died down for us, but one of the jobs he was linked to is Washington and it looks like they are heading towards Kalen Deboer as their guy. So Campbell could still be available fwiw (if it was him, I see no reason why he wouldn't have been announced by now)
Campbell is (probably) Oklahoma's top target IMHO.
I read some tweets that they're going after Kingsbury but there's no way he's coming. He's living the dream in Phoneix right now, he's not coming to Norman.
Isn't his buyout from Iowa State like $28 million (read the number in an Oklahoma article about potential hires)? I really don't see VT going for it.
Not to get your hopes up but his buyout is $4 million.
Contract Details
Message board comments I've read seem to indicate Matt Campbell doesn't have an agent (haven't seen an article stating as such), but if it is true, perhaps that's why we haven't heard much nationally about the VT job. Whit is executing the search on his own so that means any news is coming from agents that represent the coaches to try and get them as much money as possible. IF Campbell doesn't have an agent and IF (bigger IF here) he has an agreement with Whit, then perhaps that's why we are hearing very little from the national media.
I'm sure I'm setting myself up for a major let down, but it's the logic I've been using to think that there's still a chance. I'm ready for this search to be over.
Live look at ADs searching for coaches ATM
That's certainly what the agents would have you think.
Lol. Butt hurt much?
USC has the highest ceiling of any program in the country. It's the pinnacle of college football. But sure, he's probably just scared of a couple laps around the heehaw circuit.
It was a joke tweet that I found humorous and thought others might like a laugh
I know. Wasn't directed at you. Just the salty SEC pumpers out there.
Got you, upvoted your last comment to offset whoever downvoted it, lol
I'll own up. I DVed it because of the assumed personal attack ("Lol. Butt hurt much?"). Now that I know it wasn't a personal attack directed at the OP, I'll remove the DV.
No worries gents. I'm definitely coming across hotter than intended today. The coffee hit hard this morning.
Good for him. That new SEC is going to be an expectations nightmare. He's got a much easier glidepath to the playoffs from USC than through the SEC gauntlet.
And from a Braves fan perspective, you just have to make it there, and you got a shot.
Also, have to imagine quality of life in LA > Norman Oklahoma
No, it's not a stretch to imagine that.
It makes complete sense for him to move to USC now that OU is heading to the SEC. He would have gone from top dog in probably the 3rd toughest conference to scrapping for wins in the SEC West. Why subject yourself to that when you can move to the 4th or 5th toughest conference (depending on the year) where you can get whoever you want with just a bit of effort?
Listening to the ticket in Dallas right now, and they are talking about the move. Apparently the number one baby name for OU grades the last few years has been Lincoln (LOL).
The consensus seems to be that he made the move because he will have a much easier path to the CFP at USC than he would with OU in the SEC (as mentioned above) which is also why he picked USC over LSU, who apparently made a push for him.
Time to buy stonks in baby name change companies in OK!
Bingo. He can get that benefit, plus get straight PAID!, plus (just a guess) it's probably a hell of alot easier to get kids to come to LA than Norman? Sign me up
The butthurt from ESPN over someone not wanting to coach in the SEC is a bit tasty today, to be honest.
I know this wasn't from ESPN. Just a general comment having seen SAS name on there
Discretion is the better part of valor.
I know it's not the ideal candidate that we are all hoping for but with so many big name openings and not a lot of quality candidates this year, I can't help but lean towards J.C. Price.
It also could be that I keep watching his UVA post game interview and it gets ya in the feels every time. I would go to war with that man and maybe that's just what we need.
JC Price as head coach is what you get when you make staffing decisions by emotion. He has 1 year of P5 experience as a coach, and zero years of HC experience, save for his interim gig.
Love the guy, but hard no for me.
I think VTHS summed it up nicely last night
Love JC Price for everything he's done during this transition and really appreciate just how much he bleeds Orange and Maroon. But the highest level of coaching responsibility he's ever had before taking over as interim coach for 2 games is 3 years of co-DC work while being a DL coach for Marshall. His only P5 experience is a just completed full season of co-DL coaching for VT under Fuente and 2 years of Grad Assistant work for Beamer in 2002 and 2003.
He's just extremely underqualified for the job right now, and the last thing we need as a program is a head coach who is learning on the job. That has the potential to go every bit as badly as head coach James Johnson did in basketball.
The beauty of JC Price is that there's no confusion that he's the long-term candidate.
It's likely that was the exact reason he was selected to be interim. There was another DL coach to take the duties on and no throught at all that he would be the long term answer at HC.
Not to mention he even said he is not the guy after those 2-3 games, he is just going to enjoy the experience and do the best he can
We need someone that can run an entire program, not just stimulate emotions. (Recruiting, seeing the whole picture, seeing 3 years down the road picture, overseeing game plans, etc.) I love JC but is he ready to do all of that?
Counter-point - if we had a guy who could stimulate emotions the last 6 years we would have 1) done better on selling recruits, and 2) not tolerated crap coaching because of personal loyalty. All of which would have culminated in us being way better positioned than we are now.
Speaking of Gainesville/UF...
Well, I guess they produced something of value once...
Tim Tebow?
the longer I have to wait for some news the more concerned I am growing that the news isn't going to be very exciting
regardless of who Whit hires, though (with a few exceptions), I'm going to give them my full support for at least 3 years. But they do need to show measurable progress. Winning right out the gate isn't going to be enough for me. We saw that with Fuente. Then we regressed for 5 years. I don't really care if we only win 2 games in 2022. As long as there are indicators that we're heading in the right direction I'll be okay.
I don't think it will be an inspiring announcement. What we can afford and who is available this year limits it. I believe we won't feel like we hit a home run when the ball is hit but hopefully we will realize it when he is touching homeplate after a couple years.
I would like at least a ground rule double to start if possible. But he can work up to a home run hire in a couple years of progress.
Exactly, the longer this takes to come out, the more I'm convinced we're gonna end up screwed when the music stops. I don't think it's Whit's fault, I think we're just getting usurped by "better" programs.
I'm really hoping I'm wrong, but I'm in your boat. I'll give the new HC 3 years before I start getting upset.
waiting to fire Fuente this year instead of last year or at the end of 2019 is on Whit, though. I think it's fair to assign at least some blame to him here. In fairness to him, though, this is a nightmare of a season to be making a coaching change with all of the movement going on. We could get really lucky or we could get really screwed. We won't know for a few years, probably.
Agreed, unless it's some worthless scumbag like Hugh Freeze or someone, I will withhold my opinions (either positive or negative) until there are 3 years of data
Not sure how much pulling an LSU/Coach O here would have helped? Napier would have likely still waited things out, knowing how hot his name is.
I have a feeling that the only thing that would have kept Napier in play was if we didn't officially fire Fuente until yesterday or today. That might have kept Florida from pulling the plug on Mullen. But then on the other hand, they might have fired Mullen later this week and still swoop in to get Napier.
Firing after 2018 and the first losing season would also have been a bad precedent.
Firing after 2019 after an 8-5 season would have had people screaming for Whit's head.
Firing after 2020 - Covid and millions slashed from Athletic Department Budget. The money might have been there but the image would have been horrible. 11 million slashed from budget so they could pay a 10 million buyout? Yes, I know money was from different sources, but you can imagine the articles.
Sooo......Rich Rodriguez gets three years or no? ;^)
Read that he is going to Jacksonville State I believe. I don't have the link.
ESPN: Temple fires Rod Carey.
Hopefully their coaching search doesn't overlap with ours. /s
1 million coaching changes this season... ah ah ah
Are they going to hire Manny Diaz again? He will be available shortly.
Maybe they get a discount this time.
With the carousel still going at warp speed, I wonder where Fu will end up landing. Anyone know if his name has been thrown around for any of the openings out there?
I care as much about where Fuente lands as I do about how my ex wife is doing. I wish him all the best but my attachment is gone now that he is no longer a part of our program. I reserve the right to reverse my opinion it he ends up here in Dallas at SMU.
Rhett Lashlee is all but signed for SMU
I'm curious to follow Fuente for a couple reasons - 1) I want to see if he brings Brad with him (and how he does with/without him) 2) I want to see if he changes his approach in any way (see if he acts on lessons learned or if it's business as usual because he didn't do anything wrong)
No AD with eyes and a functioning brain will let Brad come along, not as an OC/play caller anyways
Before it came out that Riley was leaving OU, I wondered if FU would be the next former HC to be one of Saban's assistants, where he would in time transition to OC, and then look to move to OU when the time was right, assuming he did well through all that. I suppose it's still an option though, when OU's new coach is let go in 5 years for not meeting expectations in the SEC.
The fact that NO ONE is interested in him just shows how bad of a job he did here the past few years...
Shane to OU?
Should we pre-emptively add USC to the coaching carousel?
Yep, when returns to Blacksburg in ~10-years, he'll have quite the resume. I expect the headlines to read like this:
If you thought OU fans were mad about losing a coach to USC...
When your coach bolts to USC, you snag his replacement from....USC?
Math checks out.
We'll see if USCe is really his dream job I guess
When he said "This is home", it wasn't just a recruiting slogan.
Or so I heard.
Good for OU... We don't want him. Coached until Sylvester Croom (Miss St), Phil Fulmer, Spurrier, Kirby Smart and Lincoln Riley plus a year at SC but just not enough HC experience. /S
Rich Rod to Jacksonville State.
https://footballscoop.com/news/sources-jacksonville-state-targeting-rich...
waiting...
right meme, wrong gif
meh, when he was leaving WVU, the other one fit. Now he's headed to Jax St.......he deserves this one.
The "bye felicia" on this gif is triggering me. BZZZZZ-ZZZZZZ would've been perfect.
Rich Rod doesn't deserve anything "perfect".
What, someone telling RR to Bzzzz-ZZZZ doesn't deserve "perfect"? ;^)
I love this performance though.
The "wanting a head coach with head coaching experience" requirement from Whit is looking more like a desirable qualification given the talent that is currently changing hands.
If anyone cares, you can add University of Delaware to the list:
billions and billions of coaching changes
Looks like Washington is hiring Fresno State's HC, Kalen DeBoer, and announcing it tonight.
https://247sports.com/Article/Washington-coaching-search-Huskies-reporte...
Anyone else think OU might just hire Bob Stoops back permanently? He has seemed to want to get back into coaching and will be Interim HC for the bowl game.
When Stoops stepped down I was shocked and just knewww something big was about to drop in Norman...turns out I guess he just wanted a little bit of break 🤷♂️
Maybe.
Or maybe it really was the fact that his father died of a heart attack in his 50s, and because of that, he decided that he was done with the regular grind of coaching? Coaching a bowl game doesn't come with that grind.
Hm. Nahhh...that can't be it. /s
Decent amount of smoke around Venables to OU. The ACC will rejoice if this comes to fruition
Lol... does Smotherman want to move to Norman though?
Confirmed Venables to OU
Only source I see is a Bleacher Report parody account, which describes themselves as parody in their Twitter bio.
Ahhhhhh damn they got me thanks for fact checking that.
LSU is said to be targeting Brian Kelly now. If he goes, wonder if that means Marcus Freeman will get bumped up to the big seat.
I feel as if that's a demotion to some degree for Brian Kelly.
I feel like ND is the epitome of cush job with close to best benefits offered.
My thoughts too. Completely complacent with missing playoffs due to no conference championship and one of the top paid coaches for finishing top 25 seasons. Go to the sec and you're getting fired after three years if you aren't waxing bama
Go to the SEC and you're getting fired after three years if your name isn't Saban. Slightly /s
Look up his salary - it's significantly under par for a "blue blood"
Such a BAD idea for both sides. For LSU, I can't imagine you'd get Brian Kelly for any cheap price tag, so talk about overpaying for nowhere-near-guaranteed success at LSU. For BK, as mentioned above, you've got a cush-ass job where ESPN/NBC/CFP/refs are all drooling at their mouths to service you orally...why would you want to leave that?
Guess he is tired of winters in Indiana.
I think the wind chill would be the worst.
Eh, South Bend is cold but not that cold
Oh WOW I completely missed that 🤣
I heard wind chill and Indiana and my mind went to driving through South Bend last January and putting a sweater on my dog to take her for a walk
You have to think if Kelly leaves that ND calls Fickell immediately. But if Fickell is unavailable or goes to OSU (if it opens up), you have to think Freeman would be their guy. The posts saying Kelly to LSU Fickell to ND and Freeman back to Cincy as HC are funny. Assuming we have reached out.
Seems like a square peg in a round hole type situation
EDIT: THIS AGED POORLY IN THE LAST 60 MINUTES
So glad we didn't dump Fu last year
Edit: didn't think the s/ was necessary, lol
I feel like there is some major lacking of /s tag here
SIAP...Lance Leipold coaches Kansas
Venables to OU seems to be getting a lot of Buzz. Washington just announced Deboer.
LSU Kelly seems like a leverage joke move.
Duke and VT looking lost with LSU right now lol
Edit: Thamel tweeting that Kelly to LSU is a done deal wtffff
Fresh news out of Auburn is Coach Harsin has fired Mike Bobo as OC, Nothing to do with VT's search, but Harsin is cold blooded and all business. Could be the landing spot for Dan Mullen.
Right move IMO. Bobo was brought in due to booster pressure to get an SEC guy in. Harsin is a proven offensive coach. He should've just brought his own guys in to start with.
I'm seeing a lot of statements from schools where they are letting their coordinators go. Kind of makes me jealous that we couldn't have a statement like that the last few years.
BRIAN KELLY TO LSU. WHAT A YEAR
This is absolutely insane. What are the chances Notre Dame hires Fickell?
If it were any other year, I'd say he's gone... But with playoffs looming I'm not sure how he plays it.
If ND doesn't announce new hire before mid December then odds are it's either Freeman or Fickell.
I was just reading they're pretty interested in Matt Campbell too
Twitterverse is buzzing:
Venables to OU: https://mobile.twitter.com/marinonfl/status/1465477876707475468?s=21
Kelly to LSU: https://www.si.com/college/georgia/news/brian-kelly-to-be-hired-as-lsu-h...
I just came back to post about Venables. Lol
My phone almost caught on fire, I was going so fast. Just kidding. I was absolutely fumbling over my fingers as I frantically got the comment posted.
C'mon 07Hokie, can't you keep up? 🙄😂😂
/s
This is insane. Excited for the Urban Meyer to ND rumors to start.
Or Kingsbury, or Tomlin...
Or Fuente
Particularly if you're an NCAA head football coach.
Or an agent...
This is nuts ...it's like musical chairs and I'm afraid we will.be the one left without a seat
If we were considering 8 mil for Campbell I don't see why we can't throw 6+ at Lane Kiffin
#Lane2Lane
Honestly though, him trolling Bronco for 3 years would be high comedy
He'd be looking to leave Blacksburg so f'ing fast he'd probably board another team's bus after a game.
Then someone else can pay us a buy out for a change!
Add La Tech and Fresno State to the tracker as well. Update Washington and Wazzu
Here's the positive side to all of this. With all these enormous programs hiring new coaches, if the guy we land (whoever the fuck that might be at this point) performs well over the next few years, the likelihood he gets poached is exponentially smaller.
Or exponentially greater. This madness is now proof that no coach is off limits. It's only a matter of money. The Hokie Club, big donors, and Whit better up the game now to keep pace to handle this 2-5 years from now.
Alright Bruce Arians confirmed
I mean who would steal Rich Rod from us anyway! /s
Leg
I want off this crazy ride
What I'm the actual he** is going on right now
Remember how crazy the 2007 season was? This is like the coaching carousel version.
I thought this season was getting as crazy as 2007, the coaching carousel just amped it up.
2021 > 2007
This coaching carousel is insane. VT would ordinarily be a top 3 opening in a normal coaching cycle, but with ND opening we're now at 5 programs that are clearly above VT.
LSU, USC, ND, OK, UF
Luckily some of these openings are because of invasion/cannilbization but still crazy how all these jobs are open.
Agent's are about to have their best Christmas bonus ever.
Ok - everyone who had Oklahoma and ND needing a new coach at the end of '21 please step up and claim your prize.
This is all very disappointing to be completely honest. Everyone making mad moves and VT seemingly sitting here with our hands empty. I know Whit has a plan and all, but damn... Make a freaking move already so we don't look like a second rate program (although that may very well be what we are) that can't get its shit together.
Yeah, all these other programs making moves and we seem in neutral...might not be reality, but that's how it feels to me.
I feel the same, but to be fair it's all been very unfortunate timing. We've probably been targeting most of these guys but we can't compete with these big boy brands. We're gonna be left with a coach who gets a C grade on the optics test that we're gonna have to put a lot of unfounded faith in
I feel like our hire will be viewed as the energetic coach with great potential. Very likely will be a non-starter for many people. So is the trajectory of VT football at this rate.
None of the big name P5 head coaches were ever coming to VT. We apparently couldn't draw any traction with G5 Napier or even Clawson. Whit has to be vetting the best possible G5 step up HC, or best possible P5 coordinator to step up to HC.
G5 Napier went to SEC Florida. Clawson got a huge raise, which is what he clearly wanted, and we're better off.
The angst people are feeling are what happens when they look to tweets for comfort.
Reminds me of recruiting. It either is or isn't but trying to decipher the tweets doesn't change it.
I think you're right that Whit is doing his due dilligence.
I don't care about appearances, I just need VT to hire someone so I can finally be productive at work again.
Personally I don't care at all about appearances, but I know these types of things can have an effect on recruits. At least in the short term.
Whit will announce no coach before his time.
It is disappointing, and entirely unsurprising
Updated to include the killer
I laughed at this. Thanks.
leipold is at kansas
Not telling your assistants that you are leaving before they go out recruiting is heartless
Not as bad as forcing a kid into a scissor lift in a wind storm, but still heartless
Sounds like Brain Kelly...
Yeah, didn't he leave Cincy in a similar fashion
sounds right, that is the kind of person brian kelly is
I give BK three years max in Baton Rouge. Expectations at ND are unrealistically off the charts. They're even higher at LSU, and they have the SEC West schedule.
There is going to be an absolute smorgasbord of high-level talent in the portal from all these big-time programs with ridiculous coaching turnover. And yeah a lot of them will just follow coaches to new destinations, but a lot of them are going to be left standing in musical chairs too. If VT can hire the right coach with the right recruiting skills you can go ahead and speed up that rebuild timeline we're looking at. You could conceivably rebuild this roster on the fly into a Coastal winner in one offseason with the kind of talent that will be available...IF we hire the right guy who can sell kids on coming here.
Rumor has the third Bo exiting Auburn. Bobo out as OC, and sounds like Nix may be hitting the portal. There was only one real Bo ever at Auburn, anyway. #34
My roommate and I used to make Bo Wallace jokes, which were in between Hunter Pence jokes and Chuck Norris jokes. Just bizarre enough to be strange or interesting, but mundane enough to be believable
Only real Bo that matters to me is Natty Boh

yep...and being in Upstate SC, i can tell you my USCe coworkers are really hoping Beamer pulls in lots of former Oklahoma players...and really, there is probably a good chance that happens.
I see this delay as us not hiring Chadwell. If it was Chadwell it would've already been done.
Could probably say the same about Huff as well, right?
Unless Huff was way down the list for Whit.
I think if we're going off that thinking on Chadwell, I'm also thinking that Huff is being vetted. He only has one season as HC so you need to understand how he'd run a program. You already know how Chadwell runs a program.
Coastal Carolina is NOT in the 2021 Sunbelt Championship game, so.......
Wow, I just looked this up because it surprised me. But sure enough, they are behind App St (7-1 conf) and Georgia State (6-2 conf)...the only two teams (and divisional foes) CCU lost to this season. Granted, those two losses were by a combined 5 points.
I admit I've slipped a bit the last couple of years in how closely I follow college football.
But when did the NCAA rule that the transfer portal applied to coaches too? And how did I miss that?
The transfer portal was made by coaches, for coaches a long time ago.
Players just got it recently figured it out.
It's a lot more lucrative for coaches.
Coming AND going.
If the coaches are just playing musical chairs, let's just hire Saban.
Funny, it would change the whole ACC.
If Matt Campbell goes to ND ... 🤬🤬
I'm half-expecting to wake up tomorrow to news that Ryan Day is jumping to the NFL, leaving the OSU job open too.
Yes and then Fickell definitely gets his destination job
What's surprising to me right now is I'm not really seeing Campbell up there all that high for OU or ND. OU seems to be after Veneables, Mark Stoops, couple of others. And while its still really early with the ND news, there seems to be strong winds to promote Freeman from within or take a shot at Luke Fickell.
This is a round about way of saying is Matt Campbell really gonna stay at ISU? Like how much can you like corn?
Ask Fuente. His addiction to corn cost him his job.
I sense plaid coming.
I... didn't know this was a thing. I'm still not sure
https://en.uncyclopedia.co/wiki/Cornography_Addiction
ND recruits itself. Brian Kelly will have to put in some serious work in SEC county. Don't really see this being a good pairing.
Never interrupt your enemy when he's in the process of making a mistake
LSU recruits itself twice as much and with no academic restrictions. I don't think this works but if it does they could be a monster again.
LSU basically recruits itself in the state of Louisiana. Kelly also has to deal with academic requirements of ND. No worries like that at LSU. Whether he fits culturally is a bigger concern.
I put my phone away at dinner time. I head over to my laptop after dinner, and woah, there's a lot to digest here.
1 in 5 FBS jobs will change hands, at this point, including 4 of the 10 teams who won a national title in the BCS/CFP eras, with at least 1 more expected.
Some interesting context...
Miami gonna open too
The only surprising thing about that is that we're Top 20 in all-time wins. I really didn't think we were that high up.
TBH, a lot of our success has been recent. That's why I thought that.
For most of the 90s and early 2000s VT and WVU were fighting over most wins without a championship, still kind of are doing that. Clemson has also passed us since early 2000s
There is also a large drops off after PSU at #8. VT is 17th (used to be 15th) and we are 150+ wins behind PSU. Thats 1/5th of our wins. PSU is 70 wins from #1 and 36 from #2
PS. if you go by winning percentage we are not top 20.
Okay so suppose Venables goes to OU and Pry comes to VT - that is a huge blow to 2 of VT's 3 biggest recruiting rivals (the third being UNC IMO) - Would be great for VT.
A ton of steam in the past 30 minutes for Bill O'Brien at VT. It's only been 30 minutes, though.
Where?
One tweet man is that really a ton of steam? I don't know who tf it's gonna be, but hopefully Whit has something crazy lined up already
That was the first one, there's more now.
if whit has something crazy lined up...give me david shaw or pat fitzgerald. they would be completely out of the blue.
I hope not but whatever. I'll give him 3 years
On one hand, he's coached under some greats at both the NFL and NCAA levels. On the other hand, his inability to stay in a job (team or even position) makes me nervous. Old philosophy was to be weary of people who have a trend of jumping jobs every 2 years, as it could be them leaving before their incompetence gets them fired.
Kelly FIFTEEN MILLION. Guess that's how much it takes to leave a university that covered up a wrongful death for you
It's $10M, Dennis Dodd was wrong.
Still, crazy money.
He's going to be making more money than the majority of NFL head coaches (only 4 that are making more per year), and until we get details on Riley's new deal this will make BK the third highest paid football HC (per year avg) in the NCAA behind Saban and Dabo.
USCw won't release the details. They are private.
Wonder how James Franklin feels losing Brent Pry today, and signing that extension instead of taking the USC job. Of course, Notre Dame and Oklahoma are both open now, so, why not?
I guess $80 million richer, regardless.
Updated
Pete Sampson (ND beat writer for The Athletic) reporting that Kelly is trying to bring Freeman with him as the highest paid DC in the country. That would be one heck of a domino when most expected Freeman to be elevated to ND head coach. Matt Fortuna also saying LSU is after ND OC Tommy Rees. Would gut the Irish and trigger a lot more shuffling...
If he steals both I'd imagine Fickell to ND would happen pretty quickly.
That could mean two teams in the playoff have no permanent head coach...
Now knowing we have our guy, I'm absolutely sitting back and laughing at ND for all this. They got absolutely big dogged by LSU and its their own fault for being too proud to join a conference.
Let the enormity of that comment wash over you for a moment. Notre Dame got big dogged....Notre Dame! This isn't Podunk U being big dogged. This amazes me.
On the plus side, apparently the ND staff was totally surprised by this move too, so it may be hard to convince existing staff members to join Kelly in the humidity in Louisiana.
ND's TV deal no longer gives them the advantage that they used to have. And now without that, they've become a bit of an afterthought in the national scene (which is kind of crazy, but I mean... yeah they're in the discussion from time to time, but never really seriously). The most hype they've had in the past few years was when they were playing Clemson in the ACC Title game.
If they were smart, they'd realize that joining the ACC in the next 24 months is the only way they have any hope of not being completely bypassed by no less than half of the P5.
Also, if the playoffs were based on conference champions, as it should be, ND would likely join the ACC.
ND transfer portal 'bout to light TF up
Yeah I had heard that Freeman was in line to be the next HC at NC. Fickell to ND would be gigantic if Freeman bailed. If LSU is also after Rees, then it would essentially transplant the ND staff to Baton Rouge
I think I found a more punchable face than chinballs

are y'all suuuurrrrrrrre it's not An-do-EEL?
And now we wait to see what Oklahoma does, and if Texas actually decides to stick this round out, and how ND fixes their new mess (and if not internal, what school they screw over does to fix their new mess).
One thing I am liking is that the SEC is just putting too many top coaches in there. Short term, sure this is fun, but not every coach and school is going to be able to have success there, and eventually they are going to start canceling each other out. LSU poaching the entire ND staff? Great, that makes ND weaker and just adds another good school to a pot that is already piping hot. The SEC is so far past diminishing returns on elite teams that its silly. Its going to be a bloodbath, and legitimately good teams with 3 losses will be annually left out in the cold while teams from other conferences play for the title.
Hate to see it.
The strongest conferences eat their own. That's why we've been struggling. The coastal is clearly the strongest division in football because we keep eating our own.
...which is more reason why momentum for a 12-team playoff is growing.
If the SEC wants it, it'll happen.
While true, if they have 3 losses and not winning their division, it shows they aren't the best team in the country. That gives the other teams a chance to see if they are the best
And after it becomes a bloodbath of missed expectations, can we see (10 years or so down the road) top coaches choosing not to go to the SEC? That could be interesting.
Just read this to the Dawg across the room. His response? "You need heat to make steel".
UGA lost HALF of their starters (sitting out for the NFL draft) before their bowl game to Cincinnati last year... and still won. Better to train and win against the tough kids in your own backyard - and be surprised when the kids from the next street over aren't nearly as good as you expected.
I'm hearing Franklin is hiring Corn to replace Fry based on his proven ability to shut down an offense.
I just saw this on reddit and it made me laugh so hard the dogs came over to check on me:
Sonny Cumbie to La Tech
Lincoln Riley don't waste a DAMN DAY
USC pulling off a big win for The Alliance
Glad we got our guy. Seems like this silly season could go on for awhile.
The fact that brian killed a kid kelly dipped on ND while they still have a fair shot at the playoff is just bonkers. Money is a hell of a drug and I still am stunned he made the move before the end of the season.
If I'm the dukes mayo bowl or any bowl sponsor I'm doing everything and I mean EVERYTHING to get ND and LSU as my bowl matchup. GIVE ME ALL THE DRAMA
LSU wanted a coach NOW. Kelly would have missed that payday if he said "talk to me in January"
OU is getting crazier and crazier. A coach, still employed and recruiting at OU, is also recruiting for USC. Needless to say, fans aren't very happy.
ARTICLE HERE
OU is a football first school with a lot of history. Imagine how much it stings to be "big dogged" like this.
This bullshit aside, it's about to be borderline absurd the class that USC suddenly pulls this cycle because of this.
Can the next OU coach refer to USC as a bunch of oranges?
This is stupid and dumb. Clearly the AD at Notre Dame doesnt know what the hell he is doing. Widenly panned as a terrible hire. I mean, hes only 35. He's only been a DC. Dont even get me started on the fact that he hasnt killed anyone yet. Terrible.
Add Steve Addazio to the list. Fired from Colorado State.
But he was a DUDE.
LOL. Raid any good cruits tho
Hard things apart! I wonder if they ran out of pavers at home depot and this was his reaction.
Ugh I hope they don't hire someone good
I guess he didn't want to lose to 3 VT head coaches?
I hope they don't hire Poindexter.

This was unexpected
I just saw this. Wonder if it's fake. Why would he resign? Did he get fired? Or is he taking another job?
It's definitely real. Barber and McMurphy also saying it.
Not fake, Brett McMurphy has it too:
Crazy.
In all seriousness, I hope he doesn't have a health problem. Seems very sudden to resign out of nowhere and he isn't taking another job.
Per Adelson, not health related. Speculation by Hoos on Reddit is he might not have wanted to fire some of his buddies. We can go back to laughing now.
Not health related per Twitter
Did he watch the presser this morning and think about it all day then decide to hang it up at the end of the day? Pry already beating LOLUVA.
Are you f*cking serious?! That is amazing
Fitting that his departure is about as surprising as his hiring.
Lmao saw this over on 247. I guess Brian Kelly is now a southern man. Listen to that newfound accent!
Layin' it on thick too lol
I'd be offended if I were a tiger fan
Part of me thinks this is proof he's a total snake and not genuine at all. But the other part is wondering if he got the huge offer from LSU and said, you know what, f*** it - I'm going to take them for a ride and grab all the cash I can, retire in a few years anyway, no real plans to actually win much, and I will completely troll them along the way. If so, well played Brian Kelly.
Both can be true and fuck him, he killed a kid
The fact that it appears none of his staff is following him to LSU is pretty telling.
None of his staff had a clue he was leaving. One of his assistants was in a recruits home when the news broke.
When a guy has been with you for 20 years and says, nah I'm good. You should probably check the mirror
And someone did a comparison for the extra hilarity
https://twitter.com/JeffDarlington/status/1466602743573856262?t=7Js8GYvL...
Yep. It's fucking gross. He's an awful, awful creature
I'm adding accent to the list of things he's killed.
Don't let this reply distract you from the fact that Brian Kelly killed a kid and and accent.
As someone who has a deep accent this shit is fake as fuckkkkkkkkkkk. I cant wait till he gets the socks beaten off him by bama next year so we can all laugh at him now that he has to actually play a difficult schedule for once and not the pansy ass notre dame schedule. Next thing ya know hes gonna be coming out with his own line of gumbo recipes and hot sauce for all his original homemade creole cooking hes done since he was a kid.

9 P5 games, including 5 ACC, 2 Pac12, 2 B1G, as well as a team that's in playoff contention...huh?
The 5 ACC and 2 Pac12 are the Pansy games...
7 games from the ACC and Pac12 - not exactly a gauntlet. Yeah, ND played a couple good teams but most of their schedule was soft AF
ND's combined opponents' records: 71-71
FSU 5-7
Toldeo 7-5
Perdue 8-4
Wisconsin 8-4
Cincy 12-0
VT 6-6
USC 4-7
UNC 6-6
Navy 3-8
UVA 6-6
GT 3-9
Stanford 3-9
You know it's a pansy schedule when we were the 5th best record on that list
I'm throwing LSU's schedule here for comparison, just to have an informed discussion.
Combined records: 89-54
UCLA 8-4
McNeese State (FCS) 4-7
Central Michigan 8-4
Miss State 7-5
Auburn 6-6
Kentucky 9-3
Florida 6-6
Ole Miss 10-2
Alabama 11-1
Arkansas 8-4
ULM 4-8
Texas A&M 8-4
One significant difference is that since LSU is in a conference, and a minimum of six of their opponents play each other, there's a guaranteed 21 wins and 21 losses spread among those teams (if I did my math correctly). The point being is that if Auburn had beaten Alabama, while it would change their individual records, the combined record would remain the same.
B-b-b-but SEC.
They played us twice, won by a total of 4 points, to one of our worst teams in I don't know how long and another team starting a backup QB, and we probably should have won both times.
This is just f*cking stupid. ND schedules. Look it up.
Convince me that ND has a tougher schedule than lsu.
That wasn't the question. And you realize that Sagrin and others actually have ranking for SOS based on opponent records and such...
The notion that ND doesn't play anybody is always hilarious to me. They play like 2/3 of a legitimate ACC schedule and then fill the rest with fully legitimate , usually almost all P5 teams. They get out of championship weekend, sure, but they don't play nobodies.
2/3 against the ACC impresses no one. The ACC is a joke right now. Wake Forest is in the ACC cg for crying out loud. The ACC champ isn't even sniffing the playoffs. ACC is rubbish and if you think otherwise you're a homer. ND playing 2/3 of their games against the softest league in the P5 is very far from a gauntlet
They don't play 2/3 of a schedule, they play 2/3 of an ACC schedule, as in 5 games instead of 8. So even less than a normal full schedule. Then they play USC, Stanford, and Navy every year. Then they usually have 1-2 games against bigtime opponents that aren't routinely scheduled (this year it was Wisconsin and Cincinnati). And then on top of that they usually fill out the rest of their schedule with decent G5 teams rather than FCS nobodies.
It's far more challenging than your average P5 school's schedule and by SOS is even better than Georgia this year. They might not run the SEC West gauntlet every year but they play zero warmup/creampuff games either.
Brian Kelly, this August

Jon Sumrall (Kentucky co-DC) to Troy
Edit, can also add Joe Moorhead to Akron
Moorhead isn't official yet, just heavily speculated. Sat or Sunday likely.
And there it is
He's the Big Dick.
It's pronounced "Marcus".
The official title is Marcus Freeman, Dick Corbett Head Football Coach, so yes, he's the Big Dick.
I never knew endowments for coaching positions was even a thing... hmm.
O yea. Tech even has one for an Olympic sport I think.
Tell that to Chris Bickell '97 Head Football Coach Pat Narduzzi
Fuck Pat Narduzzi
Very interested to see what his contract is and how it compares to Pry's. That will tell us if we got good value.
This was pretty cool by ND. Seems like the players were in practice when the official news broke this morning and this is how they found out:
((Note: Volume warning in the second half of the video, it gets loud and distorted with the cheering))
This is awesome! I despise ND, but I love that these kids got rid of Brian Kelly Killed A Kid and promoted a young up and comer in Marcus Freeman.
Time will ultimately tell but just when everyone thought LSU big-dogged Notre Dame I think reality is that ND came out ahead of LSU.
Looks like the Canes are poaching Clemson's AD and they're also trying to take Cristobal from Oregon.
EDIT:
Thamel disagrees at the moment, so who the hell knows what's going on
Why???? Would he take that job.
He's an alum. Guessing the fact that they're going to invest more money in the program helps as well. He's not tied to Diaz, so firing him and hiring a replacement won't step on any toes (especially if it's true that they're actively pursuing Cristobal still).
I think it's hilarious that Miami is actively trying to pursue a new head coach while they still haven't fired Manny Diaz yet.
I mean it's better to look for a job while you have one right? this is just the company's version of that.
But the company's version of that typically isn't carried out publicly.
At the ones I've worked at is has been.
Maybe they're hoping Manny will see the writing on the wall and call up Temple and be like "Hey remember me? I hear you guys need a football coach again."
We heard they were going to "really invest" when they hired Manny, and Richt before him.
But this time it sounds like they have big commitments from Jorge Mas and Marcus Lemonis
They actually laid out a plan this time though for financial things. I guess part of their big chunk that they're investing is what Shalala wouldn't touch, the money from their healthcare system. So they're pumping like $30-40M or something like that.
They may have a plan but long term Miami must have wins to keep their "community" fans engaged and giving. Miami is actually a small private school at the end of the day.
they were going to "really invest" when they hired Manny, and Richt
So, you're saying their investments are bak?
Didn't Cristobal just get a raise and extension? Didn't Miami learn after Diaz not to give the other schools their money?
Oregon offered him one, but I don't think he's signed anything yet.
With the way Oregon has started this game, I really hope Cristobal goes to Da U
Lincoln Riley sitting at home watching, thinking I can pick up surfing in season and win this conference.
On the ACC Coastal scorecard, this leaves Salty Pat as the longest tenured head coach. He's been around since 2015.
Mack Brown and Geoff Collins have been in place since 2019.
VT, uva, and Duke will all have new coaches in 2022.
Miami is either on the 2019 list with Manny Diaz or on the 2022 list, or possibly both based on the way their hiring process apparently works.
Manny Diaz is Schroedinger's coach, right now.
I really hope his agent is making calls all over. I'll laugh if he ends up at UVA because they were the only 2 left hanging and said let's just go to the football games as friends.
Came here to post that tweet and suggest that clarifies why we went another direction. That's a hell of a contract
And thats the cheap part of the yearly expenses, our assistants + support staff budget is around 7.5 mil.
Brent Venables to Oklahoma, per ESPN
Came here to post that. Would love it to be true.
https://www.espn.com/college-football/story/_/id/32793128/oklahoma-looks...
Time to see what kind of internal structure Dabo has really built at Clemson, a not great season combined with losing your long term DC, does it come back or was it just another Circular ACC heavyweight?
And Clemson likely losing their AD to Miami. With all that is cycling down at Clemson and the moves Tech is making, it feels like it's time for a shift in the ACC.
I know it's a weird year, but Pitt is the first Coastal team to win the ACC since VT in 2010. Eleven years. If Pry builds VT like I think he can and maybe Miami starts to get their act together, I would love to see that game get back to the status in had in the 90s and early-mid 2000s with the Coastal as the power division in the conference.
Hot take: Rooting for Bama to win so Saban retires and Dabo moves to his alma mater! I'd imagine Dabo would want to depart if his AD and DC are both leaving
Not to mention Elliot is being courted
And Venable.
So Venable goes to OU and Elliott gets loluva or Duke?
That's what it sounds like. Some chatter that if Elliott or anyone else gets the UVA job, Dex might be joining Pry as DC. That would be a major coup.
Yes. VT-Miami having national significance is good for college football
Not many teams positioned to really take advantage of their down turn. They have some time to figure it out.
I am hoping this is a live look at Clemson
Looks like Venables to OU is about done.
ESPN's tweeting it out, so it must be officially official.
Looking like Cristobal to Miami. Had a feeling this was coming.
Miami throwing some money around. Sheesh.
This is what worries me about "new increased assistant and staff pool" at Tech. While it's a large increase over past Tech years where does it stack up against peers starting next year and beyond, are we already falling back out of top 25 in pay?
We aren't in the top 25 in pay with the bump.
Did they fire Diaz yet?
Have they fired Manny Diaz yet?
Not yet
Cristobal scares me a lot less than Lane Kiffin honestly. He's a good coach too, and Kiffin is definitely riskier, but Lane is the kind of x-factor that I could have envisioned getting them all the way back to their early 2000's ceiling. Cristobal should have them better than Diaz but I have a hard time seeing them become a blue blood again with him too.
Cristobal scares me in the fact that he could recruit major talent to Oregon and now being at Miami in the hot bed of football talent, I could see him doing real damage. And yes I know Miami gets a lot of talent regardless of whom is coach and wastes it more times than not, but Cristobal didn't waste it in Eugene so I doubt he will if he's in Miami.
He did increase Oregons recruiting, but its not a huge leap over what they have been doing over the last 15 years. I wonder how much USC sticking has played into that. Its hard to say he used the talent when he keeps losing to Utah, who doesn't recruit like the top of the Pac12. But I think he will do better in Miami than the past like 5 coaches.
It's unfair hiring someone with the last name CrystalBall cuz he definitely has an unfair advantage of being able to look into the future.
At this point, they'll tell Diaz he has been fired when Cristobal shows up to move into his office and everyone just stands there awkwardly.
If this report is true, basically yeah...
Going to be a horrible year for UM next year if they don't get Cristobal. Basically the same kind of year we just had with Fu.
My sincere hope is that Cristobal turns them down, then Diaz leaves for another job because he's pissed. Then Miami is extremely behind on the coaching carousel.
Unfortunately, Diaz won't walk away from that buy out money when he probably knows he wouldn't be able to snag an equivalent job to the Miami one
Panthers just released Joe Brady.
This is great for VT.
I don't know. I kind of like Clemson being as strong as possible and the rest of the league catching up vs them falling down to the rest of our current levels.
but the rest of the league was not catching up, they just fell a little down towards the pack
Our three biggest recruiting rivals are unc, Clemson, and PSU. Two of which lost their top assistant in the past week.
Ideally, we want VT, FSU, Miami, and BC to be the best schools in the ACC. Enough good teams for the conference to get national respect, but we won't often be recruiting head to head against these teams.
Could be interesting. I've long expected that Duke would plateau under Cutcliffe and then go back to their doormat ways after he left. Didn't really expect them to go after a "hot" name.
If I'm Elliott, I'd stay away from the Duke job. It's already a tough gig, and I think it's going to be a lot tougher as it seems like there's going to be an upgrade in football investment from three Coastal rivals (VT, Miami, and UVA).
Elliott has supposedly already interviewed for the UVA job too.
If I'm him, I'm going somewhere that I can essentially audition for the Clemson gig, and I think the Duke job is a hard spot to do that. UVA isn't much easier, but I think there's a least a willingness to invest there.
Duke is tough. Coach Cut was the perfect fit there but just couldn't sustain it. If you can coach Duke to bowl games, then you have succeeded there for a new job.
I know the guy's a Hoo, but I almost want to see Pry pull him to Blacksburg just to screw with uva.
They're really taking this whole 'little brother' thing to heart aren't they? /s
I know he's a Hoo alum, but it's just a funny timeline to me:
- Fuente is fired
- Bronco quits
- VT hire PSU's DC
- UVA supposedly going after PSU's co-DC
Next thing you know, they'll identify themselves with the 'Charcuterie Basket Defense' and take their replica Commonwealth Cup on recruiting visits..
You ASSUME they don't do that now.......
just wait till you see their devastating underwater charcuterweave
"This cup.... This is what you could be playing for. But not many players at UVA have had the fortune to hold such a holy grail during your lifetime"
Miami finally pulled the plug officially.
They have handled this so poorly and about to dump so much money into this late a choice. Not to mention Miami coaches were out recruiting this morning and all had to leave their visits. .
I have a serious hatred for Miami, but the guy sitting as head coach deserves better than the shit he just had. Some of the UM fans were saying he's a complete jerk behind the scenes as well, but still, when your coaching search is public knowledge, just fire the guy and let both of you move on.
After what he pulled at Temple, this is literally exactly what he deserves.
Plus he's getting a $8M buyout.
I will *gladly* be publicly embarrassed for half that.
You and lepakkkkk are both correct, but I don't think anyone expected Richt to retire when he did either. It's a little different, but he did definitely kind of hurt Temple although they did get some money back from his buyout.
I agree that Manny deserved better from Miami, but Manny is also the same guy that dipped on Temple within a month of him getting that job. What goes around comes around.
at last, finally we have a chain of turnover
Does the Miami AD walk into Manny's office and hand him the turnover chain to fire him?
Miami is doing all of this without an AD...
Well, that explains part of it.
They'd have to hire one first.
Cristobal's and Diaz's buyouts combine for a total of $17M before you even factor in Cristobal's new salary. That's absolutely insane for Cristobal's record. I feel like anyone can go to Oregon and win 8-10 games. Helfrich did it, Taggart did it, neither of them are exactly proven HCs.
Cristobal has proven he can recruit but that's never really been an issue at Miami.
Miami and FSU just burning through that donor money in search of a decent coach. They both keep trying to 1-up Tennessee.
If you're Phil Knight or any other Oregon fan or booster, you have to be wondering "what the fuck else do I have to do?" Lost Taggert to FSU (probably would thank FSU for taking that genius off your hands) and then Cristobal to Miami (like...but why?)
Some creative new uniforms would really help I think. OR even better charge VT more money for throw back uniforms so they can use that money to hire back chip kelly.
Sounds like they need to stop hiring people from Florida.
Lose their next coach to Florida to make the the cypher complete.
Here's a consolidated list of the updates that haven't made it to the main post. (Hopefully this helps 07Hokie.)
2. Kansas - Les Miles
--actually replaced by Lance Leipold prior to the 2021 season
6. Washington State - Nick Rolovich
--Wazzu promoted interim Jake Dickert on 11/27
16. Akron - Tom Arth
--hired Joe Moorhead over the weekend
18. Louisiana - Billy Napier
--promoted their OC Michael Desormeaux over the weekend
25. Colorado State - Steve Adazzio
--99% of the way to being replaced by Jay Norvell, opening up the Nevada job.
Still looking:
10. FIU - Butch Davis
19. Duke - David Cutcliffe
21. Temple - Rod Carey
23. Fresno State - Kalen DeBoer
26. LolUVA - Bronco Mendenhall
27. Miami - Manny Diaz // Mario Cristobal (99%)
thanks! i took the liberty of editing the official changes in the OP. Seeing how things can fall apart last minute etc, i'll wait for announcements before adding Norvell, Cristobal, etc
Finally got Norvell official.
But this is the best part:
In those CO St photos this is all I can think of....
If I haven't gotten it done, feel free to help out. This past weekend I was visiting my folks, so there was more watching of football than commenting online of football.
Also need to add Nevada as open
15 of 65 P5 schools are now going through coaching changes.
Despite all of the rumors that he wanted out, Lane Kiffin has a new contract at Ole Miss:
The football financial arms race continues
One important number that hasn't been reported for him is the buyout, so we'll see...
If season tickets cost less than $5k, I would buy as many as I need to (up to the full amount of 40k), and pocket the profits from the bonus.
You better checks your maths. I think there's more zeros in there.
Thousands, millions, who's counting.
It's the SEC, math just means more
Miami's handling of their coaching change was pretty ridiculous.
Miami's

Mark Whipple out as Pitt OC. Some of the chatter on Reddit is he might be taking that role at Nebraska.
IMO, There's a lot of pearl clutching with the whole situation at Miami.
All I know is that college football is way more fun when Miami is good. They thrived on being labeled the villain, so if this puts them back in the crosshairs, I'm all for it. They might as well embrace it at this point. And if we're being honest about things, the ACC is probably foaming at the mouth for Miami to get their s*** together. When they brought VT & Miami into the fold in the early aughts, they both were expected to be competing for Coastal titles annually and that just hasn't happened for a number of reasons.
If this leads to more classic battles of VT versus Da U, bring it on! I always love raining on their parade when the national media labels them BAK.
It has more to do with Manny Diaz stiffing Temple to go to Miami after 3 weeks, and Miami giving Diaz the big stiffy in return to get Cristobal, without an AD.
IIRC, it was 4 days.
Regardless, I don't have a problem with what Diaz did. You need to take advantage of opportunities when they come up.
I fully expect UVA to land Poindexter in the next few days or so, but I have to admit that the longer it goes without them announcing it, the more I get a little hopeful that he will turn them down and they'll just go back to being bottom feeders.
Let it go just a tad over a week longer
There is that too. Option B would be for them to hire him, but it take another week to announce.. right after ESD.
James Franklin continues his trend of taking everything he wants away from the State of Virginia.
So you'd have to think if Elliot and UVA came to an agreement yesterday there would be little reason not to announce that today.
It is strangely quiet on that front.... wonder if that meeting in C'ville last night didn't go well....
It would really make my day. I mean on twitter when Dex announced he wasn't going there was some freakout and then a rally to accept Tony Elliot as the next head coach. If that rally turns out to also be premature I'm not sure what they're gonna do.
Plan

BCUVA Head Football Coach
Anthony PoindexterTony ElliotMike LondonCarla Williams!Even as plan Z, I'd be 🤢🤮
Brett's gotta work on his math, that's $15+ mil
My guess is the 13 mil is the actual salary but the 125 includes bonuses that could be earned to get to that number
Tony Elliott is in Charlottesville now with his family interviewing for the job. Could be a tough go round for Dabo losing 2 coordinators who have been with him for a while.
Clemson likely losing both coordinators and AD, leaving Dabo to fend for himself. UVA coaching search is a mess and talks with a big time respected alumnus break down in the eleventh hour, Miami coaching situation is a total shit show, FSU still struggling to get anything going, UNC recruiting well but still nothing to show for it on the field, Pitt losing a once in a generation QB after a dream season, same with Wake.
Meanwhile Pry building a really nice staff and turning some heads on the VA recruiting trail again.
Pitt lost their OC along with Pickett.
Could be taking the current longest pending position off the board:
Now off to Google why he left Colorado, cause I remember he wasn't there long and I renege the COY award, but I don't renege why he left.
He started his final season 5-0 and ended up 5-7.
was this a weird auto correct or are you just using this word incorrectly?
Big hands me typing sucks so I type a lot wrong and get autocorrected alot on my phone.
Just assume unless I mix up less and fewer (wife yells at me all the time) that its a typo/autocorrect.
Fox Sports grades coaching hires:
https://www.foxsports.com/stories/college-football/college-football-coac...
Of note:
Emphasis mine
Ehhhh... I'd love to be that optimistic, but I think there needs to be a real infusion of talent & depth into the program for that prediction to come true.
I think Pry's job to achieve instant success got much harder with Miami's hire of Cristobal and the amount of resources The U is going to be pouring into the program. If we're being objective, they have a head start from a talent perspective across the board with a really good, young QB in Van Dyke. Diaz was also recruiting pretty well, and Cristobal is going to get them rolling instantly in that regard.
Interestingly, the writer didn't make a prediction for Miami. Realistically, what he's said about Pry is what I would say are decent expectations for Miami.
They did grade Miami:
"Mario Cristobal to Miami: 95
It doesn't get much better in terms of fit than Cristobal returning to The U. He's not just a former player but also a two-time national champion as a player and assistant coach, as well as a Miami native.
Yes, Cristobal's exit from Oregon felt messy. But, hey, former Miami coach Manny Diaz accepted the job at Temple before leaving for Miami 18 days later. Sometimes you have a smooth transition. Sometimes you have a Lykan Hypersport crashing through a window at the Etihad Towers like in a "Fast and Furious" movie.
Oregon was 4-8 when Cristobal arrived in Eugene. He won two Pac-12 titles and a Rose Bowl. Justin Herbert and Kayvon Thibodeaux were his recruits.
Miami needs Cristobal. The Canes haven't been great since 2002, and they've finished in the Top 25 at season's end just four times in the past 16 years.
Give Cristobal what he asks for, and turn him loose to recruit the most concentrated, talent-rich high school football state in the country."
I read it. I just meant that they didn't give a prediction for what they think Miami will accomplish similar to what they did for Pry regarding positioning for the CFP in 3 years (i.e. what you emphasized in your post).
Ah!, Gotcha. True and good point.
I mean I'm pretty high on Pry and he's made some great moves so far but quite the stretch. I would take in 3 years we're solidified atop of the coastal.
Very optimistic, but not unrealistic. I keep harping on this, but given that we nabbed PSU's 2nd best recruiter (Franklin is their best recruiter) and Clemson is losing two of their top recruiters, we are in a good position to recapture the mid-atlantic (UNC remaining as a serious recruiting threat). If we can capitalize on this, and leverage the portal, we could have a very talented roster soon.
Lots of 'could bes' and 'maybes' there, but it's possible.
I think we'll be in control of the ACC pretty quickly. But getting to CFP level good is going to take some time and dramatic improvements across the board (talent, development, coaching)
To me, being "in line for possible selection to the College Football Playoff" means that we are competing for conference championships. I'd say Oregon has been 'in line for possible selection to the College Football Playoff' over the last few years.
But yes, it won't be easy.
everyone's in line, I guess. Just a matter of how far back. I think the ACC has dropped off considerably and I don't think the ACC will rep a team in the playoff for at least 3 years. I think Pry could have us in the ACC CG in 22 or 23, possibly even winning it but I don't think that gets us close to the CFP. Not until 2024 or 25.
Not to be the wet blanket here, but I'd say it's overly optimistic to assume we'll be in the ACC title game next year. I think there needs to be an upgrade of talent at skill positions (or at least drastic improvement) on the offensive side of the ball (especialy QB & WR), and our depth on the defensive side is pretty thin. I think that's going to take at least 2-3 years to see progress unless this staff is able to get some immediate game changers from the portal.
I think Miami is likely going to be the preseason pick to win the Coastal, as they have a lot of guys returning from a team that started to figure things out down the stretch. And with the way Cristobal is going to inject that program with talent, UNC isn't going to be the only Coastal foe that likely will have more talent across the board over the next couple years.
The good news at least, is that I think Miami will be considered a good win if we beat them in a division that's really been lacking the past few years.
I have no expectations for next season. I'm happy for the change. I will use next season to set expectations for subsequent seasons.
The new hires will have an effect on the season, sure; even next year, but the real changes will occur after one or two recruiting seasons and we see the merging of recruiting, player development, and in-game coaching. So, for me, '22 is tabula rasa. '23 can be an ACCCG appearance, just based on the uncertainty and chaos that usually occurs in the Coastal. Any reasonable view on this coaching staff will need to be made after the 2023 season.
I think next year will likely be a dumpster fire, through no fault of Pry or his coaching staff - a lot of guys leaving an already not so good team + installing new systems = lots of growing pains.
Year 2 doesn't get as much of a pass but 3 is really where the rubber meets the road for me.
I do think it's unfair to expect to be in the ACC title game next year. But my point isn't that VT is necessarily good enough to be winning championships. My point is that the ACC is so craptacular at the moment that anybody could win it with not very much effort. There absolutely needs to be an upgrade of talent at the skill positions and depth players if we want to be successful long term. I'm not denying that. But the ACC is probably about as bad as it has ever been right now so those upgrades, which will take years to accomplish, aren't necessary to get to Charlotte. Not yet, anyway.
3 years and we're a playoff contender?
The bridge between in contention for the playoffs and contending in the playoffs is the difference between Alabama or Georgia and whoever loses the Big 12 title game.
If you look at the past 20 years or so, nearly all first-Natty-at-that-school were won by coaches within their first 5 years. Dabo is the outlier. So is Mack Brown at Texas.
Saban, year 4 at LSU, 3 at Bammer
Jimbo year 4 at F$U
Ogeron year 4 at LSU.
Urban, year 2 at FLA and year 3 at anOSU
Chizik year 2 at Auburn
Miles year 3 at LSU
Carroll year 3 at USC
Stoops year 2 at OK
Tressel year 2 at anOSU
Coker year 1 at Miami
and if you give him credit, Scott Frost year 2 at UCF
Lol, I don't give the self-proclaimed title to UCF and Frost.
It's NCAA recognized. If Bama, LSU, Texas, OSU, ND etc etc etc get to count theirs why not UCF?
As of late playing for what is considered the title is how they "keep" theirs. I don't care about claimed titles from 80 years ago. UCF didn't play for the title therefore end of story.
Point being that it was within 5 years...and it's recognized by the NCAA. Helps with the overall picture.
Those schools and teams all had talent the difference here is we will need a significant roster overhaul to get back to that level. The portal could make it easier or harder we will have to wait and see but for me a bowl game next year and I'll be ecstatic.
Brent Pry could end up being the best coach in all of CFB for all we know, but it wouldn't net a CFB Playoff appearance without talent - something VT lacks severely. I just cannot see this happening in 3 years.
We have talent, we don't have enough talent across the board, especially in key positions. If Pry somehow manages 2 top 10 classes in 23 and 24, then we could when you look at how many schools have won with young QBs.
The difference is winning the national championship. The list above in the comments shows those are blue blood programs doing it so they were not rebuilding as much as reloading with a new coach. I think a couple great classes and good coaching we could make the playoff, but not win it.
Anybody else hearing the Dabo to Las Vegas rumors? Young guy in my office says he was seen watching their last game with the owner.
I mean hunter renfrow does play there
Maybe Elliott knows and is sticking around to take over as HC?
No more dominos falling for now
Last I saw this was disputed by other folks
Mike Elko to Duke. A lot of VERY good coordinators getting HC jobs in the Coastal right now
Actually really impressed Duke pulled Elko both Elliot and Elko are good hires I didn't expect either school could pull off
Yeah, I would have wanted Elko over Elliott so good job Duke.
Updated for UVA, Duke, and Oregon
Fresno State hired Jeff Tedford, again.
Well, if at first you don't succeed...
...then skydiving is probably not for you.
I'll be interested to see how Clemson responds to losing their AD, OC, and DC all in one week. Not to understate it, but that seems preeeeetty significant.
you could say they Clemson'd the offseason.
Is that as a co-DC? Or did Poindexter take a demotion to not coach at the alma mater that retired his jersey?
Would be such a Hoo thing to do.
Discuss
So. Much. Cringe.
Grinder is a sandwich, not a college football coach.
1st take

final take after all the wierd cringey shit hes doing

Tropic Thunder was the first movie I watched with my wife. 12 years later, I'm glad she was willing to put up with it for the 2 hours of her life she will never get back.
For me its a classic, not Spaceballs/Blazing Saddles/History of the world part 1 good but for its time it was as close as hollywood got to that style humor and I love it.
Clemson replacing Elliot and Venables with in-house hires. Passing game coordinator as OC and a "senior defensive assistant" who has never been even a position coach at any level to DC.
Some assorted thoughts: (1) seriously? (2) coaches really do hire other coaches they are familiar with and have worked with before (3) I sure hope Pry is the right hire because this is our chance to seize a place in this conference
https://www.shakinthesouthland.com/2021/12/14/22834739/clemson-football-...
This makes sense to me, and it assumes Dabo is staying. You want to keep the current schemes and assistant coaches in place, in order to keep most of your top recruits (and keep existing players from transferring).
The alternative is a complete staff rebuild, since most top coordinators would want to bring in some of their own people. I'm sure Clemson will also start putting out feelers for OC/DC candidates in case next year doesn't go well.
Nothing about this shocks me. Outside of this year, Clemson has been a machine and their scheming and recruiting works. There has to be the mindset that Elliot and Venables passed on enough to their assistants that they can keep it up.
Not a guarantee, but I get it
Echoing others above, but outside of Venables and Morris, nearly every Dabo hire has been an internal promotion
Another factor - there's no AD at Clemson right now (dan radakovich is leaving for Miami). I'm not sure how this impacts Dabo's search, but I wouldn't be surprised if it's a factor.
I think this is pretty common in any industry, especially when you have (1) an established culture that you want to keep in tact, and (2) a time crunch - Properly evaluating an employee you've never worked with before is time intensive, expensive, and risky. Think about how bad Matt Canada did at LSU, or Kirk Ciarrocca PSU turned out.
Same here. With PSU and Clemson both dealing with new DCs, feels like any defensive recruit in the midatlantic should be focusing on VT or UNC.
The last piece of the current carousel has fallen into place as Temple hired Stan Drayton, the RB coach from Texas.
I guess the next phase of the carousel will be the sudden retirement/scandal/NFL poaching stage.
I'm incredibly thankful we got Brent Pry, I think he's an amazing fit for us and building and amazing staff so far. But after seeing Tony Elliot speak with UVA's team, that guys gonna be a stud. Our games while these two are head coaches are gonna be dog fights, I think our defense will stifle them but I'm really excited for it. If I knew how to link the tweet off my phone I would.
I'm fairly certain we were *this* close to hiring Elliot this time last year, pre-weird Whit presser.
With 12 months of additional tape on Elliot, there's a question as to his ability to perform without Heisman candidates...but he should be able to show off his rings and get recruits. They won't be Clemson-level, but Elliot was a good hire for UVA for sure.
The latest free SZD podcast had a funny segment on the hire. Basically saying it is a coup for uva but Elliot has to be out of his mind for taking the job.
Yeah, just listened to the same - in full agreement.
I don't see how this works out for Elliott. The ceiling at UVA is about 9 wins. If he reaches the ceiling, he presumably leaves for another job. But if he doesn't, I don't think anyone hires him. And I don't think this UVA roster can get to 9 wins any time soon.
So either he thinks he can turn UVA around quick, or he's in it for the long haul. Or, he got pushed out at Clemson, and UVA was the best opportunity available (the latter part of that I find hard to believe).
I see this as not too dissimilar from Elko -> Duke.
No one expects UVA or Duke to be good. Both are highly thought of coordinators, and if they can't cut it as HC they will likely not have a hard time getting another coordinator gig.
However, he (probably) could have jumped to a better program after one of their titles - not sure what he sees in UVA.
Free admission and tuition for his kids?
So this is December 16th, and in an alternate reality, VT opted to save $2.5 million and fire Fuente today. Meaning, we would have been the last entry on this list prior to the retirement/scandal/NFL trickle down effect. There's been a lot of movement in the last 19 days since our trip to Lane North.
Thank you Mr. Babcock.
All else equal that is. Do you think if we waited someone else would have snagged Pry?
I dont think he leaves for any other job that was open
We also may have lost at Lane North with Fu.
Looks like we've entered the scandal phase of the carousel.
With all the kids that were trying to leave the program, I wonder if he was pressured to resign
The Hawaiian state senate was holding hearings and grilling the university officials yea he was pressured.
Nah, it was for the health of him and his family /s.
Calling Hawaii a 3rd world country for not having Dr Pepper. Yeah, it's insulting, but that's something the players and admin can get past.
Now, if he were coaching in the 80s or even early 90s, maybe he'd get away with some of the other stuff. Some coaches were just hard.
But there's levels to all this. His own son opted to transfer. I'm sure there's far more to it than what's been put out there publicly.
I know I'm responding to something 2 weeks old,
and maybe I'm reading into this too much, but it kind of reads as a euphemism for "kids are soft these days" (apologies if I'm misunderstand)(Update: I did read too much into it).Graham was at best a complete douche, at worst, blatantly abusive. Here's some comments from players (emphasis mine):
Here's the full piece
No, just that assholes were allowed to get away with being assholes well into the 90s and early 2000s.
My bad, updated.
Kevin Steele who was just hired to be the Maryland DC has done a wild 180 in the same offseason and gone to join Cristobal in Miami as their DC now. I feel so bad for maryland on this one. /SSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS
https://www.washingtonpost.com/sports/2022/02/01/kevin-steele-maryland-m...
Sounds like a quality guy
I mean Auburn boosters apparently love the guy and if that's not a ringing a endorsement I don't know what is. /s
Only took a year under the Harsin regime and the loss of Derek Mason for the Auburn faithful to get a newfound appreciation for Kevin Steele. Grass is always greener, and the last one wasn't as bad as we thought, after all.
Couldn't happen to a better program.
Lots of smoke overnight that Harbaugh is close to taking the Vikings opening, which could blow up the college carousel.
Gotta think they'd just go with Gattis at this point.
Urban come on down! Man wouldn't that be sensational.
Looks like it's not happening. I was kinda hoping for more coaching carousel insanity.
I think that Harbaugh staying is much better for CFB.
Yea it probably is. I've started looking at CFB as purely a form of amusement (because I mean, look at the state of it) so I wanted to watch things burn again.
What did the Vikings do so poorly that it went from everyone even Michigan thinking he would take the job to him calling the AD from Minnesota to tell him he was staying?
Why do you assume it was the Vikings that did something wrong? Harbaugh is a bit of a square peg at times, and he can be very off-putting. Perhaps the Vikings after talking to him all day said, "Thanks for your time, Jim, we'll be in touch."
Living in SE Michigan and watching Harbaugh's interviews with the local sportscaster every week during the football season leads me to believe he got his bell run 3 too many times during his playing career.
For those around when we played Stanford, some of the stories about Harbaugh's interactions with CFB were very odd.
Perhaps Harbaugh finally looked at the amount of cap space dedicated to Kirk Cousins.
Oh totally, definitely deserved the extension after last year
This is probably your classic, "keep your coach under contract through when the next recruiting class would graduate" extension.
The ceiling is the roof!!
So for him it could be a lifetime contract is what you are saying?
And for those wondering this was a pay upgrade extension he went from 3.5 mil to 5 mil annual salary so he got rewarded for their trashy season with a big pay upgrade.
This sounds so uncomfortably familiar......
Has anybody been keeping up with all the turmoil at Arizona State?
https://www.mercurynews.com/2022/01/30/saturday-night-five-arizona-states-mess-grows-as-four-assistants-depart-but-herm-edwards-remains-in-place/
Wow going for the record tying infraction kudos to them!
Just another example of a stunt going to way everyone should have seen it going.
And another assistant coach is gone. That makes 5.
https://www.espn.com/college-football/story/_/id/33202625/arizona-state-defensive-coordinator-antonio-pierce-no-longer-employed-football-program
Fuente still doesn't have a job yet, right?
I have only seen Beau Davidson take a position at UCONN, outside of Smitty moving to Northwestern.
That's it. No other on field coaches have landed anywhere.
I've spoken to several alums who say Fuente will stay in Blacksburg for his kids this year, and possibly next. The family really does love the area.
Man that poor guy cannot for the life of him make a good decision.
I think living a quiet family life in Blacksburg for your family is a good decision.
$8 million buyout in Blacksburg definitely goes a long way.
I also love the area, and as glp points out that buyout will go a long way in the NRV...but it's also a small town that is very intertwined with Virginia Tech.
Feels like it would be a little awkward for him and his family?
I hope that people would treat him and his family nicely. I'm glad we have a new coach and a few of the things players have said about him as a coach are disappointing, but the little I know suggests he's a good person.
Yeah, I'd be deeply disappointed in our community if he experienced any negative events living his day to day life.
I don't think people are gonna harass him, I just feel like I *personally* would want to get the hell out of there.
For most, yes. For the man who replaced the coaching legend who built VT and ram it into the ground to a point we haven't seen since the early 90s, in a town that is rabid about said football team....I'm not sure.
I hope he is treated respectfully, but just a couple short months ago, Hokies everywhere were lamenting their hatred for the man. I don't know that that changed overnight just because he got the axe.
Also, what about Cornelsen? If he stays in town, I would greet him with a "Fuck you Brad!" every time I came across him. s/ish
Let's be honest, his payout was enough for him to retire on if he handles his money wisely.
I always wonder the financials on taking buyouts. If he takes that all in cash he's paying nearly $3M just in federal taxes.
Then the remaining 5 million is invested and earning 5-10%... I could live nicely on that return.
Yeah I mean I imagine he loses another million or so to state taxes but he'd still have plenty to get enough return to live off of.
Thats on top of the ~20 mil we paid him.
I should really stop thinking about moderately rich people's taxes cause it puts into perspective how much money I don't have.
Here's a fun calculator if you want to run the numbers.
This goes way beyond creepy-level honestly, but it does appear that what is/was likely the Fuente house has a pending offer on it on Zillow. Perhaps they are downsizing and staying in the area?
The presumed Corn house down the street also has a pending offer.
I could also have seen him waiting to the end of the school year for the kids.
Sounds like Auburn could be open.
Lots of smoke that Bryan Harsin has been having an affair with a female assistant on staff
Bless her heart
No, really, it's not her fault.
one of my buddies that went to auburn said they need to be careful here, if they're not, they're gonna lose her too :-)
Wait. He brought her over from Boise? Oh damn. This has been going on for awhile then.
I really thought he'd fail at Auburn, but I would have given him at least 2 years to fail.
So what are the odds they go hire Kevin Steele to his third job this week?
This is exactly where my head went and as someone who wants to watch miami toil about this would be beautiful.
Take the kid of the backwoods of Idaho and he gets in trouble in the City.
Apparently everyone in Auburn knows the hot female staffer was a fake news story pushed by big money donors to try to get their coach fired.
So there's one for the future playbook for.all you big donors out there. SMH.
I can't stop playing this sound clip 😂
So this is how Hugh Freeze gets back in the SEC right?
You know he's got his agent calling them up already
Petrino too?
If you ever think our VT fan base and alum are off the chain and dysfunctional, you probably right. But watch that Auburn mess going on and it puts VT in perspective. Absolute dysfunctional meltdown. Not sure if Harsin stays or goes. If he stays, look out. If he goes, bye bye Tigers football. Lotta mud being slung while the man is outta town on vacation. Welcome to their new AU Pres. announced today. Sheesh.
Rumors are that the rumors of Harsin still hitting that young blue turf are false and come from unsettled big money donors. Train Wreck!!
Just hope those Auburn academics working out good for Dee Davis.
Auburn FB Coach is the worst job in P5.
Insane expectations, out of control Booster base, impatient fans, and competitors that are always going to be one step ahead of you.
Any coach even considering going there should demand a front-loaded contract with a massive buyout with no offset.
It might be the best job in the P5. I think at this point every coach is GETTING a front-loaded contract with a full guaranteed buyout.
I'm not sure how much money Auburn has but they just paid Gus $20mil to get out of Alabama and if they have to pay Harsin a bunch (not sure if he has a for cause stipulation in his contract) they could potentially be throwing $30m+ away in 2 years. At what point do you look at the piggy bank and think you may not want to empty it on the third guy in 3 years.
I don't think anyone would call our fan base 'dysfunctional' - It's not like we have warring boosters who get into dick measuring contest with each other every other week.
Looks like Miami just poached Gattis from Michigan. That's a huge hire. It's taken Miami awhile to get their staff but they're lining up high profile coaches.
Wow. The assistant and staff pool at Miami has just taken a massive jump over the rest of the conference. Still shameful how they got that money though.
What's shameful about how they got the money? I thought it was just a bunch of alums who had enough?
https://ftw.usatoday.com/lists/miami-is-reportedly-using-medical-profits...
The money is coming partly from money made at Miami hospital system. So during a pandemic the made lots of money while not raising staff base pay and instead moved that money to Miami general fund which was then used to help pay their new buyouts, new salaries and new staff and assistant cost along with promises to upgrade football facilities.
I didn't see anything in the article you linked or the athletic article shared in a tweet that was linked in this article that suggests that Hospital staff weren't getting compensated. To double check, I ctrl+F'd 'Raise' and 'Pay' and didn't find anything related to hospital worker pay. It's also not clear how much hospital money was funneled to the athletic program, just that, after a very profitable year, the university was willing to send funds to the football program.
IDK, without more detailed information (and I recognize that Miami is a private institution, so this information might be lacking), I'm struggling to be that outraged about this.
that's the TLDR however there's a bit more nuance in it than that. As long as I can remember since I even started loosely following the sport (in like 2003), it was that Miami administrators effectively wanted the athletics department to run self sufficiently with no money from the university. Donna Shalala got some blowback for that because she came in right as "Da U" years began declining (coinciding with Butch Davis jumping to the NFL and the team moving to the ACC in the span of a few years) and it was low hanging fruit for the fanbase to complain about.
anyhow, big influx in cash from the university's medical system was applied throughout the university as a whole including distributing some to the athletics department for the first time and the cash infusion made otherwise infeasible moves feasible.
Fireman didn't do it here, but there was a lot of internet talk about how Miami pulled money out of their healthcare system profits directly to finance the football moves, and I don't really think that it's necessarily accurate or fair to frame it that way. Some people were even talking as if Miami football got a $400m lump sum influx directly from the healthcare system, which is stupid. Nowhere anywhere that i can find is the amount of money that the Athletics Department is getting from the UHealth system discussed, and it's always in conjunction with "promises by donors" or boosters or whatever. Most likely, it was a key conversation point in fundraising/booster calls -- "we have money from the university for the athletics department for the first time ever, now is the opportunity to make a move, can you help put us over the top on a big big move that changes the trajectory of the program"
Fireman's issue, and correct me if I'm wrong here Fireman, is the health costs associated with the pandemic, people dying or sitting intubated, created this large influx of cash, and is a moral/ethical dilemma.
Partly that but also; https://www.si.com/college/2021/12/13/miami-faculty-fuming-mario-cristob... academic cuts while this money was available, no major increases in medical staff to help offset ratios and overwork. (It's paywalled Miami Herald article interview.)
Okay - this quote changed my opinion.
While it's unclear if Miami's Football team profited off the pandemic, it's pretty clear that the institution underwent budget cuts despite making lots of money, then - before 'paying back' the employees who were victim to said cuts - chose to reinvest in the university.
All in all, I agree, this is shitty.
Bring it on. I want that VT-Miami game each year to be the big one we circle on the calendar. Top 10 matchups like in the old days.
The butterfly effect of the Vikings not offering Harbaugh, Gattis wanted out.
So, it's official? Da U is bak?
Answer to your question
Certainly the most bak they've looked in the past 10 years from a coaching ability standpoint.
I would actually love for Da U to be back. It would be awesome for that rivalry to get back to where it was pre-ACC expansion. If UM and VT could get back to their old school Big East ways, that would be amazing for the Coastal and for the ACC.
Agreed best thing for the ACC and VT is for Miami, VT, Clemson and FSU to be as good as possible.
And the best bit was Gattis's text to players when he left Michigan. Cant imagine he felt well respected when your HC is flirting with other jobs pretty publicly.
I dont know id feel better with public knowledge than behind the scenes, they gone, type stuff that typically happens.
Unpopular opinion, but I'm not sold on Gattis as an OC. He wasn't the playcaller at Bama, and he had one good year at Michigan. In his defense, I'm sure Harbaugh meddled plenty over the years, but I haven't seen anything over the years that screams 'offensive genius' to me.
Well, this has turned into the laggiest active thread on the forum.
The Auburn fallout may draw out the death scene for this thread for a few more weeks...
Auburn imposing the death penalty on themselves. Making the UT Vols coaching transitions look professional. Please make this end Aubie, what a Shiite Show.
The U just keeps adding on. Geez.
Absolutely bonkers in that these guys aren't even getting promotions really. Gotta be significant significant raises
Or you're the guys that brought the U Bak.
Mild raises with living in Miami for younger coaches? Then again can anybody live in Miami with a mild raise.
I think our opening the purse strings for the coaching staff and support staff has prompted Miami to not fall behind in the salary wars.
So my Auburn friend says Fuente is being rumored for the Auburn OC job. I'd be interested in seeing him at an SEC school, but Auburn seems like a place where an incoming OC would be set up to fail.
I think Fu would get eaten alive someplace like that
Honestly, it's a shit sandwich, but the broader market probably gets that it's a one year mission where if he does okay, he has SEC on his resume that may help him land a better next gig.' Plus not a bad one year paycheck if that's what it came out to be.
Having SEC on your resume doesn't help you if you underperform - see Chad Morris
Yeah Morris went from the hottest OC and then up-and-coming HC in the country to back to high school real fast.
True, but I think the national expectations for Auburn next year are already so bad, that I don't think a late OC hire for a coach walking the plank would be bad necessarily, as long as the offense wasn't absolutely terrible.
Seems like an odd move for Fuente.
Harsin is already firmly on the chopping block and it's not like Fuente needs the $$ for a job that is likely for 1 year.
If VT was tough for him, the scrutiny is going to be 1000x more intense at AU coupled with boosters that border on batshit crazy.
May be proven wrong, but don't see alot of legs to this one. If it were to happen, would be an interested spectator for sure.
He needs the income to help pay the taxes on that lump sum payment that he received from Tech.
Donors get antsy. Harsin gets chopped and they need an interim HC. Fu steps up and adds SEC HC* to his resume. Gets installed as permanent HC. Brings in his buddy Brad C to be OC/QB Coach. Auburn beats Bama and wins the natty. They ride off into the Oklahoma sunset together.
And all the Hokies scratch their heads and wonder what????
I would personally love to see this play out. And for him to succeed. Maybe and this is a big maybe, he sees the light and realizes what an anchor Corn is on him and his career and moves on from his friend. I will never begrudge someone success. Sometimes loyalty is a double edged sword and it takes drastic measures to overcome it.
The other silver lining is we'll finally get to see him misuse Dematrius Davis after all!!!
If he's made OC, what are the odds he DOESN'T bring Corny on as his QB coach? Do they have the same QB problems? Or do they have better recruits that are more in line with what Corny needs to succeed?
Also, new thread please!
If Fu does get that OC job and brings Corn and his band of merry men with him, this may very well be the end of his football coaching career. Auburn will not give him six years to move the goalposts and try to cover his failures. If he goes there and flames out fast after a year or two, he might have to consider being a high school coach if he wants to continue. Also consider Harsin isn't exactly on stable footing there either. This would be an awful move for him if he has any ambitions of building back his cred.
Well Fu did pretty well with somebody else's recruits before. He could keep up that trend.
As for Harsin, as any smart coach at Auburn knows, he is going to get paid well to go away.
What OC dictates to the head coach who else needs to be brought on staff?
Less of a dictation, more of a negotiation/ask
What bar said. I wasn't saying he'd dictate it, but what HC doesn't also get input from his coordinators on the coaches that would be under them? Who knows, maybe Corny interviews well? 😂
If Fu is the OC, chances are good that he's also the QB coach. It's extremely rare to have a coordinator who isn't also a position coach.
Grambling hired Art Briles 😳
Makes no sense. Why would you want that smoke? I mean, is he that great of a coordinator that you take on the baggage?
Because Deion is going to be dominating for a while.
They also announced it on the same day Russia invaded Ukraine, which was *chef's kiss*.
They hired him as the OC, not the HC correct? So while it's still highly questionable, it could be worse.
boggles the mind how any educator can be like "yup, lets associate him with our education"
Aaaand he's out! Got on the carousel, rode all the way around, then exited the carousel.
https://www.espn.com/college-football/story/_/id/33394263
I'm pretty sure Manny Diaz hand a longer run at temple than Briles at Grambling
Well, I was going to comment if he is showing remorse over his actions/lack of actions at Baylor he might deserve a second chance to start over even at a MUCH lower level. Apparently, not yet back to purgatory for him.
Somewhere in Lynchburg right now, Hugh Freeze and that school in Lynchburg are discussing how to get Briles on staff.
