I picked a heck of a time to drive from Abingdon to Richmond.
Quick reactions without having all the information.
Pros:
There are scheme similarities to Bud Foster and he understands the culture that made Virginia Tech special from 1995-2010. There are also more variable things to account for the space (and QB run threat in todays game. He has started out rebuilding the connection to the alumni. I have heard good things about his recruiting and work in that space, but I need to do more research.
Cons: The cons really are about the unknowns. Who is going to be on staff? Can he get the much larger (and better paid) recruiting and coaching infrastructure VT needs (if he wasn't the first choice, that is a worry for me.) And most importantly, can he be the CEO behind the scenes and evangelize Virginia Tech and the football program to an apathetic fan base? Whit said he wanted a proven CEO who could thrive in today's environment. Well, he hasn't been the CEO, Franklin has (or at least that is the way it appears.) So, it is time to do research beyond just the tape and see what I can learn.
To address one of your cons re: was he the first choice? Don't know if we will find out. If Whit was realistic, and maybe Napier was #1 but he held out for Florida, I can't blame him. That said, it sounds like Pry was high on the list if he's been working on his staff for days. I am guessing, at worst, Pry was the 3rd call Whit made. If that.
As long as he worked for Franklin, he was exposed to everything you mentioned. We can just hope he learned some things. Presumably, Whit was satisfied that he can make the jump.

I'm really excited about this and I think he's a perfect fit.
My diehard Penn State relatives are sad to see him go but all agree we're getting a good one that could build this program back up. Said the players will run through a wall for him, he's relentless on the recruiting trail, relatable, hard-working, etc. Works for me. Anyway, he's got me excited for the next chapter of Tech football.

On one hand they are blasting us for not hiring a top guy like Napier (which I guess means they think we're on the same level as the top dogs) and on the other hand ripping us for getting a "no name".

I really like their repeated comments about how handicapped they are in recruiting due to their academic standards. If they're so fucking smart maybe they should have thought twice about throwing a lateral to an offensive lineman with the game on the line versus throwing it to nearly a half dozen receivers with over 500 yds or an all conference tight end that destroyed us all night. But I'm just a drunk redneck.

Very pleased with this hire. I was concerned we'd hire someone who'd coach here a few years, have some success, then bolt for the SEC. I also hoped we could hire someone with some Hokie heritage. Looking forward to next season. Go Tech!
Just watched a press conference with Pry from fall camp media day. Important notes:
He is an Aquafina guy.
The bottle just sits there untouched, except for when he takes a sip. No bottle strangling or anything.
Aquafina is R.O. water, so he's a smart guy!
Hopefully this is the start of a very exciting period of Hokie football. After reading all I can about Pry, and watching his mic'd up videos, I'm pretty pumped. It is very obvious to me from just watching a few clips of him, the fire and passion are very much on a different level than what we seen with Fu. Sounds like he's already making the " right" moves with alumni and fans. I just hope he is as good of a recruiter as I'm reading, and like many have already said, if he nails the OC hire I think we are in business Fam! Wonder if he's a cake guy, or a pie guy???

This is what happens when local papers are taken over, layout, design and printing are taken away from in house. It means earlier deadlines, mistakes like this. These mistakes then cost them more subscribers which just hurts local journalism even more.

I believe Price will coach the bowl game. Pry needs to focus on building out his coaching staff, establishing recruiting relationships, and getting acclimated to the VT football facilities
If I am Pry, I watch the other coaches and feel out if any get to keep their jobs by there performance in the bowl and the practices leading up to it.

I believe its been reported that Pry + new staff are setting up (temporarily) offices in Lane stadium, and working pseudo separately from Price + staff.
Pry will be focused on building his staff + recruiting while Price etc. will be focusing on the bowl game.

Whit announced this in the Pry introduction press conference.
I read the bowl game is still JC Price, and that makes the most sense.
