Offensive Line Coach Finalists -- Who ya got?

It's being reported by multiple people that the finalists for the o-line job are Stacy Searels, Frank Verducci, and Bob Bostad.

By now, I'm sure most of us here have googled, read up on, and formulated an opinion on each of the three coaches. If you haven't, CliffsNotes are linked below.

Searels: http://texassports.com/coaches.aspx?path=football&rc=562

Bob Bostad: http://www.uwbadgers.com/sports/m-footbl/mtt/bostad_bob00.html

Verducci: http://www.und.com/sports/m-footbl/mtt/verducci_frank00.html

Who do you want to get the gig? Who do not want to get the gig. Why or why not?

Bostad.

I want big, mean, nasty cornfed farmboys beating people up at the line of scrimmage. Period.

This is going to be great for the ACC.

So many twists and turns.

In Sam Rogers we trust.

I prefer Searels. Hes done a great job at Georgia, LSu, and Texas.

Bostad. I'm just in love with Wisconsin O-lines.

I really hope Verducci doesn't get it, his resume is probably the worst out of the three by far. I would be happy with Searels though.

In Sam Rogers we trust.

Besides, I'm already angry enough at Notre Dame for the deal they got with the ACC.

Has Verducci been working since 2011? I can't find his timeline. (We shouldn't hire anyone without a wiki page)

Yea, bad sign when you Google the guy and his brother (Tom) comes up first. The only mention of Frank is that he is Tom's brother, haha.

"Exit light..."

I believe he was coaching with the Montreal Alouettes in the CFL. Try wikiQuebec [sarcastica]

I personally believe it will be searels

I'd rather have Stiney than Verducci. Other two guys are comparable to Grimes.

I'm rather curious what kind of response I'd get by applying. Would a secretary get back to me and tell me to leave them alone? Or might I get a personal email from Frank Beamer telling me the position has been filled?

You'd get a stock email from the school saying you aren't the right choice to even be considered.

(Insert Stiney joke here)

Bigger, Faster, STRONGER...BUILT TO HIT

My order of preference: Bostad, Searles, Verducci. Bostad is preferable, given how many B1G schools we have on future schedules (including Wisky).

Take the shortest route to the ball and arrive in bad humor.

All three have been fired relatively recently:
Searels - from Texas in 2014 as a by product of Mack Brown
Bostad - from Buccaneers 2014 as a by product of Greg Schiano
Verducci - from UF 2012 by Muschamp (he fired his predecessor Mike Davis in 2014)

Based on unofficial firing ratings: Bostad > Searels > Warm body > Verducci > Newsome

To quote Bobby Bowden:
"There are only two kinds of coaches; those that have been fired, and those that haven't been fired yet."

(I heard this in an interview that he gave a few years before FSU let him go in reference to one of his sons.)

Has Frank ever been fired from anywhere?

πŸ¦ƒ πŸ¦ƒ πŸ¦ƒ

Yes, in 1987 he was fired...from a cannon on to the FBS College football landscape. BOOM!

β€œThese people are losing their minds. This is beautiful.”

+1 for this post causing the mental image of Frank zooming out of Skipper and landing on the 50 yard line in Lane

I envisioned a scoreboard video, with CFB in a "HokieMan" superhero costume, shooting out of Skipper to rescue Hokiebird being beaten down by old Independent foes, pulling him up and over amongst BE foes, then again out to ACC foes, where they rise over them wearing championship belts! I know, I know, yes, they were hallucinogens in my past, LOL!

If bostad is a legit factor, he is absolutely my favorite. Nothing against the others, but what he and chryst did at Wisconsin was historic. In fact, he'd be a dream hire for me.

I'd be euphoric if he was the guy.

Agree. When a lot of us dream of what we want our running game to be we are essentially describing the Wisky run game under Bostad.

Hey Mason,

I'm not really trying to be a creeper here..but I was just speaking with 'Drighi and I realized that I know who you are (sorta). I've met you a few times. I feel like I know a celebrity now that I can put a face to a screenname. Just wanted to give you a shout out. You may remember me as the guy who scared the shi* out of you while you were playing drums in the basement at the house on Turner Street...or not it was a couple years ago now. But anyway I was telling him how awesome TKP was and that he should become a member and he told me you wrote for them..I knew exactly who he was referring to.

Keep being awesome.

Peace.

It hard not to think Bostad is heads and tails above those other two. Somehow getting him on staff would be the one guy who could really eliminate he sting of losing grimes.

He's got the pro experience to sell to recruits and the college experience to know how to sell it to them (soemthing a candidate like say Todd Washington lacked and made me wary, TBH). Plus those lines at Wisky were the type of thing we all dreamed of having here.

Bostad is one of the names I would always use when people would challenge me about who exactly I thought we should replace BS with as OC.

Washington was oc and o line coach at u of San Diego

'Its easy to grin, when your ship comes in, and you've got the stock market beat,
but the man worthwhile, is the man who can smile, when his shorts are too tight in the seat'

So Washington is out of the picture? Or never has been in the picture?

Guys can you give me some perspective on this. Im just wondering why any of them are surefire to accept the position if offered? They are all Oline coaches as far as I can tell at their respective schools so it is just a lateral move. Wasnt sure if Searels status was in limbo with a coaching change ect. Are we looking to offer a pay raise or whats the motive to come here? Not trying to be critical as they all look to be solid candidates.

Tech would be a great spring board for a good offensive line coach.

A head coach and offensive coordinator with a history of running the ball, some good talent at the rb position, in a major conference. The potential is there to build a really good running unit here.

Add in the past two poor rushing years, and a coach who is looking to advance his career has a great chance to buy low, then sell high down the road.

See Grimes, Jeff

Sean

Tech would be a great spring board for a good offensive line coach.

Yeah. To a team like LSU. *Grumble Grumble*

Unfortunately, in today's CFB landscape the best way to attract great assistants is to have a history of sending other assistants off to more lucrative locations.

I get this probably sarcastic, but it does seem many Hokie fans are a little bit butt sore. In the world of college coaching carousel, VT had 1 minor loss. I can think of so many more schools that should feel much more angst than VT:
Georgia - lost DC to UL
FSU - lost one of the best DC to UGA
Oregon - lost their DC and hired their LB coach
Louisville - lost great head coach to Texas and hired a PR nightmare
Bama - lost their OC to Michigan (huh?) and hired Lane Kiffin (huh?!?)

πŸ¦ƒ πŸ¦ƒ πŸ¦ƒ

I know. We should be very thankful for the stability we have had over the years. Just stinks to see a guy we liked go after 1 year.

True. But we should save our angst and sadness for when Beamer retires. That's gonna be a hard pill to swallow.

πŸ¦ƒ πŸ¦ƒ πŸ¦ƒ

A guy could generate average production, and he would be a god around Blacksburg for a year or two.

Five star get after it 100 percent Juice Key-Playing. MAN

Sounds like y'all really want this Bostad guy. If he's really had anything to do with Wisconsin's o-line, hire that man. Trey Edmunds/Shai Mackenzie/Marshawn Williams + a well coached o-line = yes.

Yeah but Grimey was not employed at a school IIRC. These guys are well established and employed at significant schools.

Grimes was laid off at Auburn like Searles was at UT and Bostad at Tampa Bay. Verdicts is currently employed.....in...Canada. They pay with smoked fish.

OK...that answers my question. I was under impression and assuming they were employed at Texas and Wisky. Now it makes sense. Thanks

Bostad or bust.

Reality has a mighty pimp hand.

That's bogus. Searels is on the same level of Bostad. And are both proven winners. Boston did it in the BIG and Searels did it in the SEC

Searels is on the same level of Bostad

Have to disagree.

Bostad spent years coaching the best offensive line in the country.

The bio on Searels is really impressive. His O-Lines have great stats and numerous award winners. And most importantly, he's a winner.

Leg for you

I think Searels would be a great get. Be interested to get French's take.

Texashokie

One thing that I'd love to hear French address: We keep hearing names of OL coaches, the systems that they employ, etc....Is it out of the question that any particular OL coach can teach the technique for any particular system? For instance, is it possible that Bostad could come in and be monstrously good at teaching zone blocking technique, even though that's not the system that he's been involved in most recently? Perhaps it's a question of what they're most comfortable with? I just think we (here at TKP) might be selling some of these prospective coaches short because we try and put them in a box.

Take the shortest route to the ball and arrive in bad humor.

Searles would be great, as would Bostad.

With that said, we have seen the worst an OLine can be, so anyone we get will be an improvement over the Newsome disaster we're still recovering from. No matter the hire, I'll be happy with the OLine play in the future, just because it'll be so noticeably better than what we're used to.

1. Bostad
2. searies
3. no thanks.

β€œI hope that they’re not going to have big eyes and pee down their legs so to speak,” -- Bud Foster

Based on watching youtube interviews with all three I would be ecstatic with Bostad, would like Searels, and would just shrug at Verducci.

Also based on this forum if Searels is the guy the learning curve on spelling his name is going to be steeeep. I know I have to look at it twice every time I write it.

My favorite part of this thread is seeing how "Bostad" and "Searels" get auto-corrected.

Who is the best recruiter and can develop said talent?
