The Hokies play St. Bonneventure today at 4 PM in Charlotte, NC. The game is on ESPN2.
I took the below from Shelton Moss's writeup. I'll add my usual tables and comments below; but there won't be many comments because Shelton pretty much covered it.
Preview: St. Bonaventure(Mods: Is it ok to do this? If not, I will take it out and just reference Shelton's article)
Coming into the year, St. Bonaventure was widely considered one of the best mid-major teams in the country. They were ranked 23rd in the preseason AP poll, and were the unanimous favorites to win the Atlantic 10 Conference. A big reason for this was not just their talent but their experience: in the age of endless transfers, the team's top five players entered the season totalling 283 starts in a Bonnie uniform. Combine that with a veteran head coach in Mark Schmidt who enters his 15th year with the program, and Virginia Tech will have their hands full in the Queen City on Friday.
St. Bonaventure is led by senior guard Jaren Holmes (17.4 ppg), who does pretty much everything well: he can shoot, facilitate, and get to the free throw line. He also never leaves the court, playing in 96.2% of the team's minutes, ranking fourth in the nation. Since the injury to starting point guard Kyle Lofton (more on that in a moment), Holmes has excelled taking on more of a distributor role, though I'd be concerned about his workload, as he has played the entirety of the Bonnies' last three games.
By far the biggest matchup concern is 6'10 senior center Osun Osunniyi (10.2 ppg), the reigning A-10 Defensive Player of the Year. Osunniyi possesses incredible hops, as evidenced by his 12.4% block rate which ranks 17th nationally. He shoots the ball extremely well inside (62.8 eFG%) and demonstrates good defensive footwork and positioning which allows him to defend without fouling. That is certainly a byproduct of his experience, as the fourth-year big has seen his foul rate decrease every year of his career.
Throw in a pair of veteran guards in Jalen Adaway (14.6 ppg) and Dominick Welch (11.2 ppg) and you have the makings of a very solid team. The one weak spot for St. Bonaventure is that they are extremely top-heavy: their bench accounts for just 17.6% of their minutes, the eighth-fewest in Division I. They utilized a seven-man rotation last year, and with the injury to Lofton are back to playing seven again this year. The flip side to that is they possess a very high continuity of minutes, which is a key stat in KenPom's preseason rankings, and a huge part of why everyone thought so highly of St. Bonaventure: their core players have played together for multiple seasons, and everyone is on the same page.
That said, the injury to Lofton really hurts. The four-year starting point guard sustained an ankle injury in a Dec. 1 game against Coppin State and has not played since. (I heard broadcasters reference a two-week recovery time on Dec. 4, which would potentially allow him to return against Virginia Tech.) He was the team's leading scorer, but his absence has affected the Bonnies far more on the defensive end, where they have dropped 32 spots in KenPom's Adjusted Defense, now ranking 83rd. Lofton is long and athletic with active hands that disrupt ball handlers. He was replaced in the starting lineup by freshman guard Quadry Adams, who hasn't been very impactful. This is where the Bonnies' lack of depth has come back to haunt them. It would be huge if Tech can work the ball inside to Aluma and get their bigs into foul trouble, because Schmidt has no choice but to play them (though St. Bonaventure has done a very good job of avoiding fouls this season).
Although it is still December, the Hokies really need this win, much more so than I think most fans realize. A Quadrant 2 victory over the A-10's top program will certainly have Tech's resume looking more palatable to the NCAA selection committee; a loss will conclude a 7-4 record in non-conference play, and require that Virginia Tech dominate their weak conference slate even more. Which, given what we have seen so far, seems unlikely.
St. Bonnie Roster:

I still can't find anything about whether Kyle Lofton will play; but Holmes has stepped up to play the PG position well in his absense. The Bonnies do have enough height to give the Hokies problems inside; but as Shelton said, they are very thin. Foul trouble could really be our friend.

Detailed Stats:

I don't have much to add to Shelton's comments. If Lofton does not play, the weaker defense from the guards may be the opening Storm needs to play a good game and get some confidence back. If Lofton plays and is near 100%, this may be the game CMY finally decides to give Pedulla more playing time. With Lofton healthy, all five starters for the Bonnies average more than 10 points per game. Adaway is the main threat from 3; but all the guards can shoot the three. If Pedulla plays, he's going to have to keep track of his man on defense; or open threes will be our downfall. If Lofton does not play, his replacement, Quadry, has not been as much of a threat from beyond the arc. As Shelton noted, The Bonnies are a mature team that has played together for several seasons. The Hokies are going to have to step up their offensive performance to win this game. Dribbling and standing around are not going to create offense against the Bonnies. Ball movement and crisp passes will give us better scoring opportunities.
Like Shelton, I'm not optimistic; but I am hopeful the Hokies can find their Mojo and put this game in the win column.
LETS GO HOKIES!

Comments
Thanks for this.
Let's Go!
Hokies!!
Hokies!!
Weekend comes early today π¦
VT - 2.5
This is unfortunately another one man show for the other team. Holmes does everything for the Bonnie's. If the Hokies can't put the brakes on this, it will be another long game for Hokies fans.
The Hokies need to score early and get the ball inside. Mutts having a big game is critical to a Hokies victory. They have to find a way to not rely on the perimeter. Unfortunately that hasn't happened much this season.
And Lofton is starting.
This is the team we were supposed to have...
What a start. Offense is really looking good.
We look so much better when the shots are falling.....and holy shit....Murphy drove the lane for once!
Bonnie's are 0-8. We are 5-7. Look for the percentages to normalize.
Narrator: they didn't
espn.com is still showing UVA logo for our game..
WTF ESPN?
ESPN is on some shit.
edit: Image Deleted. Drinking. Had a different screen shot of the ESPN error above.
MURPHY DOING A THING OVER HERE
Storm saved it up for saint bonny π€
St Stormy?
Bonnies are paying for not pressuring the ball the full length of the court all game like the last half dozen teams we've played. They finally started doing it here later in the first half but it hasn't helped as the Hokies are already hot
When the shots fall it looks OK, but how often do you go 8 of 12 from three? Still little to no inside offense. 8 of 37 points from bigs just won't cut it in ACC play.
Frequently if teams play defense like this. All of the 3s have been wide open.
I just hope it doesn't reinforce this style of play before getting into ACC play. Recipe for disaster once they get there.
Oh for sure. I don't hate that were not driving this game because they're leaving shooters wide open but that's not a recipe for success.
Right as I posted this we passed it around the perimeter for a shot clock violation against the zone.
I hate it if they don't take advantage of the huge lead in the second half to work on the things they will need in ACC play
they feed the post, Bonnies double the post, Aluma hits the open guy for 3... what more do you want? Aluma to force it up against the double?
Except the Bonnie's haven't doubled but a handful of times in this one. Most of the game they were in man to man defense. I don't have an issue taking open shots and they have done a pretty good job this second half trying to take it inside early and often.
Hard to have complaints when you win by 40~ . Just would like to see consistent ability to score in the paint. Not sure what you can really take from this one as St Bonaventure was not the same team I watched earlier this season. They were completely out of sync from the beginning tonight. Likely has alot to do with their PG not being able to practice consistently this week.
Alleyne cant buy a bucket.
Trying to wrap up at work and having this game on at the same time is not helping my productivity.
Go Hokies!
Multiple monitors made my 4:30 Teams call much more enjoyable.
Guys, have we considered the team was just worried about finals, and can now play more freely without having that stress hanging over their head?
Pfft. Finals. Who needs those. My theory was they were overly invested in Brent Pry filling out his coaching staff. Instead of practicing, they were constantly refreshing TKP and 247
I've seen enough. We're back. What a shooting clinic
"How Storm Murphy got his groove back".....hopefully
Call me crazy, but I have a good feeling about this game
Technical Basketball Strategy Question:
why can't we just do this every time
I'm not sure how good the Bonnie's are.
β: sarcasm, it'll get after ya...
π€: I mean, they're good enough to have been ranked in the top 25 for all of November. Most experienced team in the NCAA.
They certainly tripped on their own dicks coming out of the tunnel today. And we played great But this was a shocking result.
Ha tripped on their own dicks. Imma start using that
Because even the Bonnie's usually play better than this and Mike Young did not load up a powder puff non conference slate. There is a reason we were still top 40 with 3 losses in OOC. It will ramp up on Wed. At #2 Duke will answer alot of questions.
I'm not sure if it will or not. If Duke is so much better than us (and the rest of the ACC if you believe the ESPN talking heads) a double digit loss probably doesn't tell us anything.
Ah yes, but a double digit win will tell us a lot!
The good news is Duke is shooting lights out from 3 past two games so hopefully regresses to the norm vs us.. And they are a pretty poor defensive rebounding team. They game up 10+ offensive boards in first half vs SC State and struggled vs App St
Duke is not that much better than the rest of the ACC no matter how much shine E$PN wants to put on Coach K's last ride. They are good but outside of beating the Zags, their OOC was fairly weak. Ohio State exposed them inside and Kentucky just isn't all that good (as we saw against Notre Dame). I fully expect Duke to enter Feb with at least three losses.
hopefully one of those is to the good guys!
