Personally I'm in favor of the 90s helmets with white facemasks and full helmet stripes. Or the faux throwbacks that we wore for UVA with thicker stripes. Never been a fan of the plain maroon helmets.

These (or with the thicker & attached helmet stripes) is my ideal. Move the shoulder #s to the tops of the shoulders *only* because the sides of the shoulders on current uniforms have shrunk. You could add an orange collar, a VT on the pants, or a Hokie Stone pattern on the pants like on the WBB uniforms.

I get the feels, but especially with the Vick unis, nothing pops. It's very bland. The mid-90s helmets make the whole thing pop, it becomes much more noticeable especially on tv. We'll have to agree to disagree.
Agree. Love the all maroon as a throwback change-up, but it's very 90's.
Which is why I keep showing options without the outlines. If you ditch the number outlines, and do some contrasting neck and arm cuffs, it adds a little bit of interest without going over the top. The outlines really scream 90's.
I've never liked putting orange lettering/numbers on maroon or vice versa without white outlines. I just don't think it looks good. I like the orange collar in your mockup and think adding it to the 90s jerseys could look really good.
The speckles on the maroon helmets pop. Gotta give me those speckles at least.

It feels like our current uniform started at the beginning of our decline, around 2011. I wish we'd would get new ones for a fresh start. And they're ugly.
Yes! I thought the move to full-time "throwbacks" back then was a big mistake. Although the solid stripes were a better look than what we've had recently.
Controversial opinion but I liked the Tyrod era uniforms? I thought they were a unique/cool look.
I agree with your controversial opinion. I wasn't a fan of those jerseys when they were first unveiled (maybe it was the font). But they grew on me, and by the 2009 season, I was loving them!
The throwbacks were terrible, I hated them the most. The ones above I liked as a jersey, but the fan jerseys didn't look the same. I guess that style doesn't look good on a dad bod? The first ACC jerseys were nice, but the old BE circa '99 were my favorites.
Technically, the current uniform only debuted around 2018 or so. That's the jersey with the slanted stripes on the shoulders. Not great, but nowhere near as bad as the horrible throwbacks that outlived their welcome for most of the 2010 decade.
We started using the throwbacks (with the triple shoulder stripes) as White Out uniforms, but then somewhere along the way developed maroon and orange versions, and even crappy black versions. That pretty much lasted through Beamer's declining years.
Fuente's arrival in 2016 coincided with the VT athletics branding effort, so we got the new numbers, making the uniforms look a little better.
But now how will I know if the team has GRIT?
by their play on the field?
You'll know when they score in the red zone, and when they win the close games.
I only like stripes on our helmets if they're full stripes, not the weird fade out thing we had going. Grit being gone is a huge W too.
If we keep our current unis and just get rid of the white stripe I'll be really happy.

I completely forgot about that. When I was a freshman in 99 I remember talk of an all orange uni combination that was banned from seeing the light of day again because of some terrible game years ago. Thanks for resurrecting that memory.
We wore orange jerseys for a home loss to UVA 42-23 in 1994. We didn't wear them again until a 2008 home game against GT. For the record we're 11-5 all time in orange jerseys according to this site I found.
That being said, wearing orange against a team whose primary color is orange is stupid. Wear orange against non-orange opponents only please.
I won't wear an orange VT shirt at home to watch us play syracuse, kleapson, LOL, or even Tennessee just to be safe. Stupid OT loss to the McNabb and the Cuse in the dome was my fault for wearing their color.

I will say this again and again and again until someone at tech with the power to make uni decisions listens to my BS. We should drop the white out game and do a black out game with black/grey uniforms, some hokie stone accents, and nods to the corps. Do it for the military appreciation game and talk about how the school got started and Ut Prosim etc. Wearing white at home is lame and we actually have a meaningful reason to use a black alt jersey unlike 99% of teams out there.

Given Pry came from PSU, and was here right around the time we first went with the 1999 style, wouldn't be shocked if we go with that look again. Hopefully Nike will be willing to let us use our actual number font from that time if we do.

UnderArmor is closer to bankruptcy than they are of taking another school. UCLA is actively suing them for $200m for breach of contract when UA canceled their 15 year $280m contract in year 4 of the deal, and part of the case is a disclosure that it looks like UA was doing some shady financial calculations to make themselves appear more viable than they really are...

We haven't kept helmets for an entire year either, so given track record, special games, different styles, it would probably be for 6 games tops a season...I'm good with that. As much as I can get. (I've got the matte maroon with fighting gobbler helmet in my office!!!)
Baylor has theirs in heavy rotation...that's the first that comes to mind for matte-as-standard.

I can't say I would be estatic about the matte look, but I wouldn't mind having a trademark unique uniform / style. psu has a distinct uniform. One sideways glance at the tv screen and you know it is psu. The right uniform combo could be a selling point.
I would love to have an iconic uniform where schools tell nike, sure you can make it, but don't fuck it up cause this is how we look. Just think about Michigan, OSU, Penn State, Bama, UGA, late 90s VT, Southern Cal, Tennessee all iconic. You'd be an idiot to change those looks. Sure maybe a slight font tweak, but those jerseys look the same as they did 26 years ago
