LETS GO!
HOKIES!
LETS FUCKING GO!
HOKIES !!!
Shit, I need to start drinking. Hope nobody on my 2:00 meeting notices.
As long as you are drinking out of cup that isn't clear you should be fine.
THIS IS THE LAST GAME OF THE BRAD CORNELSEN ERA
Let's GO!
Hokies!
Lofton did not come out with specialists or WR groups
So as to not put to many embeds:
Virginia Tech first team offense features Jalen Holston at running back and Tink Boyd in the slot in pregame warmups, second team receivers were Changa Hodge, Dallan Wright and Luke Bussel
https://twitter.com/michaelniziolek/status/1476263887360118790
edit2: I lied about embeds
Interesting about Blackshear. Wonder if we'll see him and Thomas on the field at the same time. I mean, it's not like we don't have running backs.
It makes sense with his versatility. Get him some short routes and let him run with the ball. Let Thomas, King, and Holston do the work from the RB spot.
This is also predicated on having an OC that's willing to re-think his game plan around available information though.
The Jaden Payoute era begins today!
Murray and Nadir Thompson didn't come out with DBs either. Looks like those guys might be out as well.
Seems like we may get to see some DJ Harvey today as a result as well.
Just got to my seat!! First hokie game in-person since Clemson 2017, so jazzed about it!!!!!!!!!
LET'S GO
HOKIES!!!
I have 0 expectations we win this game. I am just excited to see the guys play.
Hope to win, unbothered if we lose just glad we're finally putting the past regime to bed and moving forward
At this point, I think "Tackling Dummy" shows up in the two-deep at a few positions...
Man, do we even score today? This game is going to require a lot a alcohol to watch.
Cheers!
Wow, super thin at DB and DE. Oh well, time to nut up.
Love for a beat writer to compare UNC game 2 deep to bowl game 2 deep. Ugh it's ugly.
Not quite the 2 deep, but TSL got you covered for starters
Ten damn players that's crazy. Another account in the twitterverse said Tech has only about 40 scholarship players dressed and able to play full Minutes for the game.
I like this guy
Already halfway through my flask (poor planning on my part, stuck at inlaws which is a dry house), let's make these last few sips happy sips!
You're screwed man
Eff ESPN, man. Nevermind that Maryland and VT have a prominent bowl game to play around 2:15pm..."Let's spend every last second we have beating the CFP horse to death. Then we'll jump right into kickoff for that other bowl game we don't care about. Money money money!!"
I didn't realize we were going with 2 logos on the helmet for today
Also, in case you guys didn't see, Brent Pry is with Sands and Babcock today watching the game.
I don't know who were fielding, and have no idea as to what to expect. GO HOKIES
Got the game on TV. Listening to Laze and Burnop on the radio!
Looks like about 69 fans made the trip for the game, good on them
Nice
Please, for the love, KEEP THE UNI COMBO!
Jet Sweep first play. Brad going out with a bang.
I literally chuckled out loud at this, leg.
Surprised they haven't mentioned the Yankees logo on the broadcast yet
The CFP is more important. duh
Wish they'd address it so people in the reddit thread can stop losing their minds
Lol. Oh boy
that was some poor coverage
Outkicked the coverage?
Welp, that was fun.
LMAO that lack of depth and young guys got us there
That was not ideal.
that was horrendous
lol at that ridiculous hold right next to the ref
Welp...
I guess that's what we get without half the team.
"Not a good start", Said Capt. Obvious
Well, I suppose giving Maryland a punt return TD is ONE way to "keep their high powered offense off the field".
It's a bold strategy Cotton. Let's see how it works out for them.
It helps keep the D fresh
poor Tyrell Smith out there on an island trying to track down that punt returner lol
Whew. Pry has a heck of a rebuild job in front of him.
Special teamers are now bottom of the depth chart guys. We don't even need to punt it.
Probably nothing but freshmen and walk-ons playing ST today. Ugh, of course not getting behind early was pretty much our only recipe for success today short of MD throwing 5 interceptions.
and Tyrell Smith who has to be the oldest guy on the roster
I think I saw Strong in the middle of the screen getting his ass handed to him by a blocker.
That was not great .........it appears this is going to be as ugly as we imagined
That was a swift kick in the nuts
Price said special teams was going to be a rough spot.
He wasn't lying
Ah good. Setting records lol
My only request is to be entertained
I like your attitude. I'm attempting to emulate it.
Bright side, we get another early offensive possession? /s?
Wasn't someone on here looking for a New Era Pinstripe Bowl hat? They just advertised some on TV!
Who TF is Chance Black.
One of the freshman we brought in last season. From SC I think.
Dorman kid. Young RB. From SC.
Well thank you I feel like I'm going to have quite a few "who?" moments this game
I can't fuckin wait for corn to be gone. Damn.
That was a generous spot.
Nice spot. Thanks.
3rd and Corn. QBattering Ram always.
...going to be LOTS of film to review on how not to do things
If Bullock can throw longer than 15 yards, put him in...
WE CAN THROW!
We only have to throw enough to make the defense account for it.
Hey he threw it!
A Tight End completion!
A Virginia Tech tradition! The TE to TE pass!
It just hit me - this is the absolute final time we will see a FuCorn offense at VT. Going to soak in all the goodness.
I've decided to watch this game like Mystery Science Theater 3000. Just appreciate all the badness and be happy we won't have to see it again.
Go for it
Am I allowed to repeat my 3rd and Corn comment already?
offsides :-)

Blumrick is basically Aaron Rodgers am I right?
Whew. Thank goodness
This is going to be painful. I hope fixing the false starts is also on the Pry to do list.
This game is super sobering. There's not a single position on this offense that I feel good about going into next year.
go for it... or a long FGA
Maryland's secondary coaches and players have the easiest job in the world today
Alright boys, shed your blocks and tackle the runner. If you need me, I'm gonna go grab a beer.
Corn really is going to make us suffer through the very end of his tenure here
Corn's probably up in the booth constantly refreshing his flight status from NYC to the Bahamas
We would be better off if he left for his flight now.
I'm not a fan of Corn, but to be fair he has third string personnel to deal with today.
It's a bowl game, air that fucker out
Seriously, he has nothing to lose, go nuts!
Exactly. My grandmother could defend this shit calling. At least make em think a bit before teeing off.
And he bears none of the responsibility for that?
Blumrick will be lucky to make it through this game. No decent QB would consider playing in this system
Maybe Corn has a side deal with like Blue Cross or Carilion. "If you send any of your guys our way, we'll make sure you get a nice commission."
Yep. I'd rather see Bullock throw 11 picks than see Corn run the same 3 shitty plays and punt over and over and over.
The only positive is we have a new staff coming in that can hopefully do better than this...
Our whole fanbase better worship the portal gods this winter and pray for some help.
Appreciative of the players who decided to stick with the team and play for VT instead of opting out.
For sure. I imagine a number of the players haven't been to NYC before, so all of the perks surrounding the bowl game were a nice incentive as well.
Much commentary from our couch today about the portal and how it's transforming college ball into minor league football - to the detriment of the college game. So much "rico's time is nnnoooowwww!" Going on. I thought the silver lining of our current status was that we wouldn't have large numbers laying out for the draft or jumping in the portal with good hires. Wrong!
As far as those laying out - why bust your ass to get to a bowl? Do bowls even mean anything anymore? How many teams have we seen during the bowls so far that resemble the team that played in week 12?
I didn't know about our starting QB going into the portal but still wanting to play today. Glad they said no personally.
I mean, devil's advocate, maybe if they'd said yes to Burmeister we wouldn't have lost by 44 points.
Seriously. Even if only for this year.
Beggars can't be choosers.
All I can say for positives so far is this the last damn Corn called game for us and I'm fucking happy about it.
Cmon man, if it goes over your head, don't try to field the punt.
It looked like Chapman broke the WR in half...
Ironic that the "New Era" Bowl is actually the End of an Era for VT, isn't it?
Glass half full take....it's the start of a new one.
Way to bring some attitude D!
The defense got a stop. Is J Hamm coaching the D today?
Yes
Maryland can seriously commit 2 or 3 people as a QB spy.
Justin Fuente is probably sweating at home right now knowing he's going to have to convince an AD somewhere that Corn should be his OC.
Bold of you to assume an AD in America is dumb enough to hand him another HC job
At least the game will be quick.
Keep running.
My wife came into the room to talk to me. "Sorry, I'm distracted by Maryland's helmets. They look like whipped cream with a cherry on top."
PASS. THE. FOOTBALL. You don't have a choice at this point. I'm not sure why Blumrick is even playing at this point. These are valuable reps that should be used to see what Bullock brings because there's zero chance Blumrick starts next year
Seriously. I get the argument that Bullock isn't ready and I guess turnovers are worse than 3 and outs, but we aren't going to win like this. At least with Bullock the Terps won't know what to expect (except jet sweeps, of course).
I hope Corn never gets to call plays again for any team. No kids deserve it.
Both teams' punters came to play today. Seriously, these dudes are crushing that thing.
So a running QB that is not particularly fast or shifty.... Why is he playing?
Run on 3rd and 10.
Nice.
Dyches definitely got concussed on that hit, right? He was stumbling once he was up.
Yeah he looked woozy. Even stepped back on the field before the staff told him to get back on the sideline.
The Hilgart Myth
If we are going to look this horrendous on O, go ahead and put Bullock in and take our lumps. Would rather give him some reps and see what we have for next year. Running sweeps with Blumrick is making me sick.
Heck, put them both in and see what happens
Running anything with Blumrick is making me sick. I assume that Bullock is at least fast. Maybe he can gash there D once.... or twice.
The fact that Blumrick is our best option at QB right now tells you all you need to know about VT football under Justin Fuente/Brad Cornelson.
I'm definitely not defending their ability to recruit and grow talent (they can't/couldn't), but any team losing their first 2 qbs is going to struggle a bit. We're just struggling more because of the coaches that shall remain nameless. I'm more concerned / curious as to why Tahj isn't starting - is it because he's not ready, or because there is zero point in risking an injury just to get some experience?
Edit on the name... typing too fast.
If the coaches gave that as an excuse, I don't care who they are, they should be fired.
Tahj Boyd is a coach at Clemson.
fixed
In all fairness, it wasn't Fuente's decision to not let Burmeister play.
~The QB Whisperer~
Tahj Time. Calling it.
Not til 2nd half..
.
Defense showed up today. Love to see it
At least the D looks fired up. DL is getting worked but the LBs and DBs are flying around.
Well, if the remaining 3 quarters are as good as the first, this may rival the Rutgers bowl.
did their QB really think that was a first down?
I thought he was asking to go for it on 4th
md doesn't have the highest academic standards [Said without any real knowledge, just personal opinion.]
Lots of DJ Harvey so far.
Nice coverage by Harvey there
DJ Harvey...bring it on!
Might need a defensive score to avoid breaking the no shutout streak.
Ok. No Tahj
Killing it with TOP
I'm going to predict at least one more QB run this set of downs.
I know its early, but do we have any idea what our school records are for most rushing attempts in a game, as well as fewest passing attempts in a game?
Holy cow, 87 rush attempts in 1975 against Wake.
https://stats.hokiesports.com/football/records/rushing.html
They don't have a similar "Least" stat for passes as far as I can tell
O/U on catches by WRs? I'll set it at 4.
Still rode Gallo like a rented mule
Maybe the plan is for the terps to be worn out by the 4th.
queue tweet from Oscar Bradburn
GIVE ME ALL THE FAKES.
Nothing to lose, baby!
Love JC Price's gutsy call
BAHAHAHA love it
FAKE! Now back to three Blumrick runs up the middle.
HELL YEA BABY! I'm gonna count Peter Moore as 3rd and Corn LOL
We need to put Tahj in at this point. He can't pass worse than Blumerick.
EDIT: And Blumerick makes me eat my words. Maybe I should just keep saying it whenever we need a deep pass.
Announcer just said big hogs
247 board about to go insane
H-O-K-I-E-S, Hokies!!!
Love the fake, take a shot.
or do that...
THERE IT IS...
Oh My God. Blumrick DIME.
I mean, if nothing else, at least we can still out-coach Mike Locksley. LLLLOLZ
So Blumrick CAN pass!
Where the fuck was this playcalling before?
That is great to see from Payoute!!!!
Early observation...
We do not have P-5 speed or size... gonna be a major rebuild folks.
Maryland is way more physical than us
PAYOUTE JUST MADE A PLAY IN AN ACTUAL FOOTBALL GAME
Wow nice catch
PAYOUTE!!!!
Payoute sighting
Ha ha ha, I was just telling my brother-in-law that Blumrick wasn't a great passer right as he completed that long pass.
He isn't but that throw was a dime. I think if Payoute wasn't held he may have outrun it
And it was money. $
Blumricks throws have not been bad today
Ummmm that was a fucking dime
Blumrick throws a missile and then we proceed to continue running it *shrug*
The fake punt and long ball were probably JC's calls. Corn doesnt like to have any fun as evidenced by the 3 plays following the long ball...
God these QB draws are so uninspired.
and Corn kills it by opening his mouth and calling plays
I hope we leave his useless ass in New York. What a loser...glad he's gone.
A whole lot of meh sandwiched around a fake punt and the Payoute play. I think Payoute may have doubled the games total yards with his reception lol.
I literally don't know why we aren't throwing it more. Maryland doesn't respect our passing game, Blumrick's throws have been pretty good so far when we let him, and guys like Payoute and Jones need a chance to show what they can do. But Corn insists on banging Blumrick up the middle. Can we let him go at half? Geez.
Not to mention the fact MD is ranked like 100-something in pass D.
"Right Down the middle..."
Dude, go home- you're drunk
That one made my laugh. Sneaks by the upright but it was "right down the middle."
The fact that someone with 5+ years of P5 OC experience is calling an offense that looks this shitty should prevent Cornelson from ever being an OC again in college football
He should check out Rugby instead of football
I wouldn't trust him to coach a fucking game of bingo
Glad we got some points but damn I'm ready for the next coaching staff
Well, our scoring streak is still intact.
3rd down QB Draw? Never saw that coming, Corn.
I am going on a corn fast after this game.
I'm eating as much corn as possible. Fuck corn.
TOP:
VT .........16:26
MD ........3:59
Utter dominance
Winning Time of Possession means we're winning, right?
Worst play calling in the red zone since WVU apparently. How the hell do you run blumrick 2 times there when he's been getting stuffed lately.
They are expecting him to run. Wtf.
so, who's the new ST coach????
Holt, I think?
Pry interview probably best part of this game
The hit by Chatman early on was pretty nice too.
Talk about bad timing. Jeesh
That got cut so short. Maryland f-ing us over on the nice things too!
You mean the part where he is describing the components of a winning program that includes a dynamic QB... as Maryland scores on a beautiful baby Tua pass? 😯
If I were as superstitious about football as baseball, I'd say it was a bad omen for our "new era".
Hey, we're still slamming the old coach on here. Can you start a new thread for slamming the new coach?
Well, that wasn't optimal....
Talk about the commentator jinx...
Awkward timing hahaha
And there's the JHam defense we all know.....
I mean, there's timing and then there's timing.
#facepalm😂
Welp ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Lots of focus on needing WR from the Portal, but we need just as much help at DB.
Can we just get a bargan deal on a whole new 22?
Feel like Maryland is going to start taking shots now...and Corny will still run Blumrick into oblivion.
Corn logic "They may stop us 49 times but Blumrick will break one for 25 here soon!"
Ouch. Lol
Trying to find silver linings, Pry mentioned an offense led by a dynamic quarterback.... wonder if he has a guy lined up in the portal?
Cameron Ward?
Please Lord.
Exactly 🙏🤞
He has a guy from GA that's signed.....
Blumrick puts the ball on a dime downfield. Likely one of his last passes of the game. I expect about 40 more qb runs or run until he's injured
Absolute shambles on special teams. Wow
The returners know they're allowed to take a touchback, right? Shibest, pull that stuff together man.
Return and coverage game is NOT what I would consider well-oiled right now
How unprepared is Tahj, exactly
On one hand, what do we have to lose; on the other hand, if we start throwing INTs deep in our own territory this thing could get out of hand real quick. Like 62-3 bad.
Does it really matter though? If we lose by 18 or by 80 its the same.
I hope the Ghost of Babe Ruth trips and rips Corn's communication setup.
Yall enjoy this shit show. Love the team and hope they pull off the W, but I have better shit to do with my day off than watch this garbage. I'm out.
just tell corny to leave and put in Tahj
He's throwing on the sidelines rn
I still want Tahj in this game even though Blumerick had that big pass. Blumerick just isn't the solution going forward.
Bullock throwing on the sidelines now, hope he gets in
Corn still calling the Fu scared turtle offense. Your head coach was fired and you are being let go, just let them go out there and ball! Literally nothing to lose. Geez this guy is horrible.
The reason Corn is Fu's OC is they think the same.
There was a funny thread on 247 a while back showing where Fu's and Corn's houses were listed on Zillow. They both had matching wall decorations lol.
Did they? Or was it the same house?
Exactly. At this time who gives a shit if they throw 4-5 picks
And it gets uglier...
Well, that's all folks. I was pretty sure we weren't even going to score 14. I know we aren't scoring 21.
Hard to score when you call plays designed to get 1-2 yards and punt. Why not just call all trick plays. Seriously, who cares? You're not doing anything with your designed plays.
Someone explain to me how we don't know how to run a screen. The receiver catches the ball and immediately runs in front of his blockers. In Heem's case he ran right the back of his blocker.
Ugh. Piss on Maryland.
We're about to give up a 50 burger.
Really bad week for me.... I'm a WFT fan. So probably about to watch my second rooting interest give up 50....
This ass beating just makes me think that much less of the players that opted out of this game. They left their teammates high and dry to be embarrassed on national television.
Thank goodness I had no expectation for this game or I'd be pissed.
We should have let Corn go after the UVA game. I mean an offensive QC guy could probably call a better game where there's nothing to lose.
We should have let Corn go after the UVA game in 2017. I mean an offensive QC guy could probably call a better game where there's nothing to lose.
Honestly, the only regret I have is that Price is going to wrap up his VT head coaching tenure at 1-2. I would've loved for him to get the win today, but there's just too much to overcome with the missing players and saddled with an OC that's not fit to coach grocery baggers.
Let's get Tahj some time and let's open up the deepest darkest depths of the playbook (I hear passing to the OT is an option). Let John Parker Romo attempt a 65 yard FG. If we're going to lose big, let's make it weird.
And here we go....
I mean, you gotta admit:
there are a lot of expected outcomes out there today
keep runing the ball, yes, that does yield expected outcomes.
Tahj!!!!
aahh...just 2 plays for TB
Fuck Cornelson. Why are we doing this QB swap bullshit again?
We can't even bring Bullock in correctly, middle of the drive. Don't let him throw either. Corn sucks.
TAHJ TIME! Btw, does anyone else notice that Blumrick looks a little gimpy? Not sure if it's lingering effects from his dislocated kneecap from the Notre Dame game or just from being a battering ram, but he just looks like there's a hitch in his giddy-up.
Edit: Tahj time didn't even last long enough for me to finish my comment.
We put Blumrick back in on third down to do THAT?
just let Tahj pass who cares if we lose, just get him some experience
hope Gallo is ok....
Me too
Typical Corn. Tahj in two plays...hands off twice.
Another f***ing QB draw on 3rd down??
Possibly the only positive from this game will be never having to see Corn again.
At least Dax is still excited
Right before I met my wife in 2013 I broke up with my ex-fiance in 2012 after almost 4 years of Hell. In 2012 the Hokies went 6-6 in the regular season and beat Rutgers in their bowl game to go 7-6 for the year. In 2013 my wife and I went to our first football game at Tech together as boyfriend/girlfriend and the Hokies lost to Maryland (but they should have won, and Journell caused them to do worse than they actually were in 2013 by missing field goals in several games that would have won it for us, still we went 8-4 regular season). 2012 marked the year of VT's downward trajectory though they managed to go .500 or better and did have some good seasons. This year the team went 6-6 and will lose the bowl game to go 6-7 and the whole 2012-2021 curse will be gone. Both marked by 6-6 regular seasons. I have convinced myself that somehow this all makes sense and the suck is coming to an end. Next year may be growing pains but this team will be good again especially on defense and special teams. Recruiting and transfer portaling will get better, talent development and coaching will be beter, strength and conditioning will be better, relationships with in-state coaches will be better, coaches will have stronger out of state relationships within our recruiting footprint out of state, and this whole nightmare will be a thing of the past. Thanks for reading my rant!
My last gf before I met my wife was a Terp. She left me during one of the darkest times of my life. I met my wife at VT and we're both Hokies. She has truly been the best person for me and my life and has helped me move forward as a person. If we have to lose to the Twerps to bring an end to the dark era and re-ignite a new spark in the program, then I'm willing to make the trade off.
Hoffman is the only one putting in the work up front. He's pancaking someone every other play. Putting some good tape out there.
He's also got the best chance of all of them of success at the next level.
its like the RBs are consistently making the wrong read on which way to break...
Lock corn in a closet and call in whiskers the wonder seal.
1st and goal, ut oh
where has THAT been all day???
Honestly Blumrick has made some good throws today
Where were these play calls all game?
Blumrick is running with no regards for his health. Also dropping some dimes.
our best play might be to fumble it into the endzone and fall on it.
Running it in for a TD is even better. ;>)
Blumrick or Bullock, idk if it even matters. But if you let them throw, we will be more dangerous than if you don't
Wow.
Plays run on offense:
VT: 42
MD: 14
😑
hey, how bout that!
Hail to The Mustache!
Onsides kick?
WE DID IT! WOO! A GOAL LINE SCORE!
Hey look the personal foul wasn't on Hoffman this time. He still started it but didn't get called for it. Growth!
This is what bowl season is all about, seeing progress
I want mean and nasty linemen.
Squib kick. 2nd best ST play of the game.
I know everyone hates what Corn is doing right now, but I wonder if we aren't simply seeing a message from JC Price and the new staff - we are going back to being a physical, blue collar football program and it starts today regardless of the outcome.
Lol I love the optimism but we've done this shit all year long, we just don't have BB3 today and half the skill position players
There's a way to do that though. Especially when you're shorthanded.....give the ball to running backs and let them do their thing rather than get your QB hurt when you're already down to two scholarship qbs for the game.
Does Maryland know they have two timeouts?
I believe you can take the extra TOs home with you during bowl season.
You get to convert them to gift cards
That's like 6 amazing highlight reel catches by MD
It is easier to make them when there are no defenders near you.
Mike London managing the clock for them?
Anybody think we have an Indiana style kick block in us?
Yeah, me either.
The maryland receivers are doing an incredible job - I don't like it but give them credit for the job they are doing.
Man I miss Bud. We use to bring exotic pressures.... I remember just 1 bland corner blitz.... 😭
This defense is soooo bad...
I am looking forward to seeing the changes Pry makes next year. Our defense can't get worse than it has over the last 2 years. Hell if Pry could just teach proper tackling, our defense would be pretty average which is a massive step up. The spring game will be very interesting to watch.
It's a little short handed with the opt outs and players not being able to go today.
As bad as that half was, its weird to think we're literally two big plays away from this potentially being a tied game
Lia just led quite the unexpected under 1 min FG drive there. You don't see that a lot in college.
I'm fairly certain any QB in college football right now could have done the same thing. It isn't difficult to see and subsequently hit WRs when they are running wide open all over the field.
Hahahaa as soon as we scored, I said to my brother "this Terps scoring drive to end the half is gonna sting"
I did it like 3 times this morning on NCAA '14, except with TDs.
D allows a drive that ends in a FG as the half ends...
MD to receive 2nd half kickoff.
Got 'em RIGHT where we want 'em!
bout to give all the neutrals watching a lesson in how to lose the middle 8
Booger is impressed with our new qb.....Booger is easily impressed.
Is he impressed he's hasn't gotten hurt, yet?
Same old 🌽
WTF is Booger Mac talking about?
He is a tv announcer paid to try to drive up interest in the whatever show is on.
Still an idiot
I'm not surprised the announcers are crediting MD's success on our absence of so many key Offensive and Defensive players. We are playing a number of 2nd and 3rd stringers... just hope for the future
Don't know about the rest of you, but I am stoked for next year. We could lose by 50 today, but at the end of the game, I'll still know CornFu is gone, which is leaving me pretty much pain-free.
And yes, the drinking I'm doing may be helping with my attitude.
you must be hitting the drinks pretty hard! giving you the ability to see what isn't visible to the rest of us. Enjoy your day!
Never knock eternal optimism brother!
Touche!
I just can't get excited until I know we're heading in the right direction with some actual on-field results. 6-6 is painful no matter who your coach is, and just being realistic, there's a possibility the Pry era won't be better than the Fuente era. A majority of P5 coaches end up fired.
Not trying to sound like a debbie downer lol.
I feel way better about the direction we are going with Pry. Yes, Pry is a first time HC and his coordinators are both first timers. But the P5 experience of his staff is no comparison to Fu and his Memphis staff. Also the support staff Pry is bringing in, including a GM and Director of Football Operations is huge. Both of those individuals have big experience as well. We have a staff of coaches who know what it takes to operate a modern P5 program, versus learning on the job and scratching their heads under Fu.
Interesting chain on Twitter. Laze basically said this is Blumrick's last game. He backed off a bit after Andy's clarification, but just something else to be aware of. That would leave us with Bullock, Farrell, Transfer QB, and walk-ons next year.
https://twitter.com/AndyBitterVT/status/1476294804841676804
Let's build with Tahj!
Blumrick seems to have that personality that just enjoys being around football. I wouldn't be surprised if he came back to VT next year as a back up but as stated in that thread I don't see him playing a significant role next year.
This is a big "What If" game for us. If Burmeister/Turner/Robinson had been loyal and finished out the season with their team, I bet we'd be going toe to toe with MD right now.
As a side note, I hope that Pry brings in some players who bleed VT and want to play during bowl season for us. If/when we finally get back to the Orange Bowl or another NY6 game, I would want to have team full of guys who want to bring home the trophy for us.
I am fairly confident if we had all of our players we would be curb stomping this Maryland team
I think so too. It's so frustrating.
A few things
1) if we had a full team against this MD team it likely wouldn't be close right now. That first punt return never happens. We'd have a lot more to offer on defense and we'd have a WR corps along with BB who would at least be attempting more passes
2) If this was an NY6 game we certainly wouldn't have this many opt outs.
3) I really don't think we should knock someone's loyalty for opting out of the bowl games.
This x100. Particularly with everything these guys have been through. If they had opted out for the UVA game then sure, but not opting out of the bowl game.
I think a lot of times we forget we have like the smallest perspective into these kids lives, there are hundreds if not thousands of reasons they might not choose to play in a bowl game especially with a coaching change.
As a fan I wish we had a full team and I wish we got 100% buy in from all players during bowl season but when you take a step back its kinda silly to put any blame on these guys they're out there doing what they love or choosing to enjoy time with their family/prepare for the draft/save their bodies/look for different opportunities/do what they think is best for them
Eh, it's the New Era Pinstripe Bowl not the Orange Bowl. I'll cheer the guys on for 60 minutes but won't lose any sleep over this one.
Success is a double edged sword in college ball these days. UGA should have decimated Cinncinnati last year in their bowl game, but Georgis was missing as many starters as we were today - all laying out for the draft.
It's just the nature of the sport at this point. Reduced loyalty to school, and more towards and individual making strategic decisions that are not about the Team. TL/DR: There is now an "I" in team...
staying the course isn't going to win this game. Defense needs to sharpen-up, ST needs to screw their head on, and the play calling on offense HAS to change.
Two of those three things are possible. JHam has shown to be decent at 2nd half adjustments and ST has a few hiccups today but generally hasn't been terrible this year.
The last few plays isn't inspiring confidence in JHam
Holding them to a field goal was a good work.
Peoples coverage looks like he plays chase the receiver hope and to tackle afterward.
Classic all-"receivers making highlight reel catches" offense...
Someone turned their WR play up to 100 today
FYI Blumrick is 8-11 for 108yds
I know our coverage isn't good but these circus catches are insane
Rakim has had a good game. Lil Tua needs to change his name to Eric B.
All this happened on a 3rd and 11. #defense
✋I take it back. nice stand there🤚
I take it back again. defense is trash lol
The Twerps are having the game the Hoos expected to have against us.
Feel like we should start getting in on the action if the refs aren't going to call any offensive holding today.
Fully expected bad Offense with the losses and Corny the dolt still calling plays, but the Defense is my bigger concern coming out of this.
DL can't get any pressure at all, LB lost and can't get off of blocks, and DB can't cover.
Bad at all 3 levels. Pry has major, major work ahead of them to make this D even average in '22.
Textbook tackle by Artis. Nice job
Running downhill and laying the wood. What a concept
"The ball play was on there...". Umm...
Nice wake-up D! we need to do this sooner
Maryland isn't 6-6 because their offense is bad. We just haven't been able to take advantage of their crappy defense because we aren't throwing the ball.
11 passes, 47 QB runs
Black is driving me crazy with his returns. I want him to stop catching the ball over his head when it's going to go into the end zone, but at the same time 2 of them ended up going for better than the 25 yard line...
work is done - engage bourbon mode, and let the points flow!
What a cunt
Imagine if he had done 5 minutes of research before hitting send on the Tweet.
5?!?! That could have been done in under 60s
False; Jabba never had any good lines.
I'm pretty sure Mack is going to bathe in mayo regardless of the game's outcome. He seems kinky like that.
Great....now they're debating mayo.
at least they weren't talking about the CFP
Do they not call Offsides when Maryland lines up offsides?
Saw this too
When the line judge can't see this to make the call, he IS blind/out of position or letting it slide for MD, take your pick
ouch
Why not blitz, at least bring an extra man? All the time in the world.
being that we are playing zone coverage, we have a number of players just standing around nowhere near the receivers, yes, blitz
we blitzed on MD's 2nd TD.. the 70 yard pass
our D is able to slow MD down, but the O isn't really backing them up
This has to be some of the worst commentating of heard in a while.
They aren't the A-team for sure, but then this is not an A bowl being played by A teams.
No offense, but what did you expect for this level of bowl game
No offense...the Brad Cornelsen specialty!
Entire production has been bad. Maybe they had opt outs and Covid impacts in the crew.
Nice how they just missed the holding call where the Maryland player was laying on top of our guy.
At least they've been consistent and haven't called a hold all day?
Its one of those calls that I hate complaining about because "there's a hold on every play" but there has been a shit load of holding going on today and not a single holding call
I guess holding isn't a thing in a baseball stadium. Only way no holding the entire game makes aense.
I'm glad we made it to a bowl but this game is highlighting why we needed to make a move in coaching. This team is just not good at all
I'm just bewildered how things got this bad under Fu. I mean by all indication, he was an A+ hire and seemed to check all the boxes. He came in and failed in epic fashion. Really don't think he coaches again after this.
This year had exposed that he's just not a big program coach. He doesn't know what it takes to run a program in a power conference.
We are worse, much worse, than we were when he was hired and it's all his doing.
Sadly, we're not much, much worse that when he was hired.
He made some necessary changes.
But he could never get it together enough to win, really, and he definitely pissed off some fans.
The 2015 team that played Tulsa in the Independence Bowl would absolutely wipe the floor with this 2021 VT team.
I was at that game. You are 100% correct sir.
They had some talent, for sure.
But the team wasn't great, and the program was headed downhill.
The last Beamer team would whip the ass off this Fuente team. It's night and day. We ARE that much worse.
This team is terrible.
Doesn't have a quarterback, the defense is marginal, the talent has left, and the coaches are gone.
But to pretend the team was great when Beamer left is revisionist history. They were 4-4 in the ACC. There was some NFL-level talent, but it was on the way out.
Dude no one said great. Things weee stagnant and it was time for a change. But that 2015 squad is night and day better than this horrific Fu squad.
Dude, I'll stand by my statement. You can stand by yours if you want, but it's not entirely accurate to say that Fuente left this team much worse off than he found it.
Whatever, believe what you want. Tired of arguing that this is the 30 year low point in Vt football history.
I'm just saying that I don't see the point in running down Fuente further.
He didn't get it done and he's gone. But let's not underestimate the challenges he faced.
We had little chance in this bowl game, as some of the talent we did have this year in key positions aren't there.
Read the room, man. Maybe the game thread of a 50 point blowout to a shit Maryland team isn't the best time to try defending Fuente. Like treasure it up in your heart, but don't expect any Fuente love in this particular thread. Fact is he had 3 losing seasons in six years, and our last losing season pre Fuente was 1992. He was not a good coach at Virginia Tech, and we arguably have gotten worse every year since he was hired.
The "challenges he faced" were largely of his own making.
I'm not defending Fuente, in any way, shape, or form.
I seen no point in furthering the discussion at this point.
Exactly. He ran off all the remaining good Beamer players, hired an assistant DC who started banging recruits moms and left in scandal, ran off Hooker, completely alienated the fan base, didn't greet the '99 team at all before promptly getting blown out by Duke at home. The list goes on. He is a fraud and shouldn't coach anywhere again. Take that golden parachute and enjoy it.
Good thing I never said great then, eh? Please read what I actually said.
He left a stout defense with numerous draft picks and a 1000 yard rusher on the offense plus our best receiving corp we've ever had. It's no wonder that Fuente won as many games as he did the following year after he secured a decent quarterback
Just shows how worthless it is to evaluate coaching hires before they've coached a down.
👀
Ahem, no micro aggression intended. 😜
This game isn't highlighting anything but the fact that transfers killed the chance of winning a bowl game this year.
Secondary is 1000% lost today. I'm not even sure why MD is trying to run the ball other than chew-up clock and get this game over faster.
Our secondary is really, really bad.
Why go zone with so much youth in your secondary. You can't expect young players to make correct plays for 5+ secs of coverage.
Just mute the tv, helps with the annoying commentary (not the gameplay though :-/)
So how many solid transfers are we gonna need in order to win >= 3 games next year? >= 6 games?
a lot
Well, at this point, I'm ready to empty the bench and play everybody. Time to see what we have in the wings.
Hopefully this is rock bottom, and not a preview of the next year plus
These commentators talk as if Maryland is surprised they're stomping a depleted, program is flux.
Lol "Come to Maryland you can 6-6 and win the Pinetripe Bowl" what a massive selling point
I guess better than losing it.
Better times ahead.
why don't we run a reverse or something besides run into the back of the O-line?
Like a jet sweep?
Watching our running game reminds me of something John Madden said many years ago about William Floyd who was on the 49ers:
"You need 1 yard, he'll get ya 2 yards. You need 3 yards, he'll get ya 2 yards."
I'm gonna miss Madden....RIP Coach.
Crazy how Corn calls the game practically the same way whether up 24 or down 24
Ah! That explains everything. I forgot Corn is still in the house.
"If I can get this game over with fast enough, I can still get that authentic New York slice from Sbarro's!"
No imagination.
Nice waste of a good kickoff return. Also why not do that throw on 2nd down not 4th.
They are absolutely ripping into the play calling and play design
For good reason, it sucks
It's almost like Corny wasn't a great playcaller
Imagine allowing you to get fired because you didn't want to replace this guy
Just like they were during the WVU game. Those announcers were absolutely bewildered as to what our Offense was trying to do.
Why overthrow that ball? If you make it close you at least give your wr a chance. Also a int helps with field position.
I'll remember the Fuente Era for giving us 3 losing seasons, in 6 years.
Also the 2019 season where we went 8-5, we played two FCS teams and ODU. This program has been an absolute trainwreck since the 2017 season.
Don't forget about losing to ODU, losing to Liberty, losing by 35 to Duke at home, only winning 1 bowl game in 6 years, and obviously losing to uva once (which is actually the least embarrassing of all those)
We really shouldn't have won that bowl game either
Well, each team showed up for one half of football. Our half was just a little better than theirs. Can't say that Arkansas deserved to win
It started far earlier though. I had just moved to Georgia, but made the trip up for the season opener vs..... JMU. And we LOST. To JMU. It was my last game in Bburg.
We also went to the VT/Michigan bowl game which had it's share of issues, but was still fun. A decade later and I'm watching Big Blue play my husband's team instead on our anniversary.
Losing to UT a few years ago was my final sign it was time for change. Hopefully Pry can get us going in the right direction. Maryland TD aside, I appreciated his interview and understanding of the Hokie brand.
Friendly fyi that Big Blue is Kentucky, not Michigan... unless that's what you were actually trying to say and I misunderstood
My former boss and Michigan grad always referred to her alma mater that way. Her front car tag said the same. Never heard of Kentucky referred to that way, but then Louisville was The uni in Kentucky at our house growing up.
I am pretty sure both are correct.
But if you say "Go Big Blue!" I am betting more folks think Michigan than Kentucky unless they are more of a basketball specific follower.
I have never heard anything other than "Go Blue" for Michigan and I lived there for 3 years.
Not trying to pick sides however I will just leave this here.
Being a Michigander... there is no "Go BIG Blue" in the Great Lake State. How did this start?
Go Blue!
Oh... and four out of five Great Lakes prefer Michigan.
What part of the state?
Yeah I think Go Big Blue is conflating Big Blue (Kentucky) and Go Blue (Michigan).
Edit: although there seems to be a marching band standard called Go Big Blue that is the same tune as VT's Go Tech Go. So I guess there may be some high schools saying Go Big Blue.
It's been 6 years of managed decline.
Please, Tahj time not more of this Corn crap
Edit: I think my plan was better than Corn's as usual
WE ARE INTO THE ABSOLUTE FINAL QUARTER OF BRAD CORNELSEN BEING OUR PLAY CALLER!
THIS DEBACLE HAS NOT BEEN IN VAIN MY FELLOW HOKIES! LET'S GO!!!
That's ludicrous bull crap. Clearly Brad is a A+ football coach and strategist. /s
If you haven't played Tahj by now, you aren't playing him. That 2 play run was just an FU from Corn.
Someone should 👊 him in the nose on the way back to the bus and leave his ass in NY
JC Price, you know what to do.
Blumrick doesn't know how to run to green spaces. He thinks he can run over the defense, NOT GOING TO HAPPEN! (and he proves me right)
if Bullock ain't playing now, he is not a P5 level QB, and i doubt he ever plays for us.
if i was Pry, i would've insisted JC play him, let's see what he can do.
I mean, what did we have to lose?
Hey guys, we're down a lot. Let's run the QB up the middle into the back of the line again. Sound good? Cool.
Brad Cornelsen sets college offense back to pre 1872 levels.
LOL. Apparently Corn has no desire to be a coach again, what HC in this galaxy other than JF would be able to watch him run the same 3 plays and say, we need that guy to run our O.
I'm not sure if what we achieve by playing Blumrick. If you want to win, play BB3 even if he wants to transfer; if you want to evaluate talents, have him share the reps with Tahj; if you want to get more experiences for next year, play Tahj because there's no way you plan next year with Blumrick; if you know you will lose but want to minimize losses, play a passing QB with a credible threat but hand the ball off to the RB. What are we accomplishing with Blumrick?
principal, I guess 🤷♂️
I think we just want to get this over with
Well, that series ended badly.
The good news is Bullock didn't take that hit.
Nice fucking blocking scheme, Corn
Crazy how things have come into full circle. 6-6 when Beamer left, and now 6-6 at the end of the Fuente era. I really hope Brent Pry can take us into the next level as a program, but damn this is going to be a tough rebuild.
If Pry can get us bowl eligible next year that would be epic.
That seems like SUPER low expectations to me. After being a 6-win program for 4 years, Fuente won 19 games in two years. Fast forward 5 years, and the ACC is much worse than it was in 2016, and the schedule next year is really soft. In my eyes, if CBP and staff don't come in and immediately win 7-9 games in a conference in which Pitt and Wake Forest just played for the championship, that's a HUGE red flag to me.
Conference is worse, no doubt. But with the gaping holes in the roster due to mismanagement, and lack of depth at positions other than RB, I think there is a huge hill to climb. I love the eternal optimism, but I think expecting 7-9 wins is setting yourself up for failure. We just watched our current roster for next year play Maryland and you don't think six wins would be a successful season?
I knew this game was going to be bad but this shit is still hard to watch.
Please dear God can they leave Corn in NYC? 😂
Drive him up to Canada and leave him there; just for the heck of it.
I'm sorry Brad, but due to Cornvid 21, we're not allowed to travel with you on team busses or planes. You're going to have to find your own way home.
Pry has his work cut out for him to undo this playing scared culture that Fuente imbued on this program.
Yep, we are in store for a 4 year rebuild. We will have to be patient. A bowl next year will be a win.
Just a reminder:
The University of Maryland is still trash
"Dominant" performance! are they kidding!?! These announcers did NO HOMEWORK or the condition VA Tech's team depletion. It's like Maryland is playing a Jr College team (now).
Still dominant nonetheless..
Arrest Cornelson for player endangerment with play calling like that.
Good lord you hung Blumrick out to dry. Sacrificial lamb on that one.
Not to mention grand theft of funds, and impersonating a coach.... resume fraud.
This made me chuckle
Have we ever won a game with Hasselback as one of the commentators?
Well, we are getting good kick return reps.
We started the half with 196 yards of offense. We ended the third quarter with 192.
Ooof.
Props to Blumrick for getting obliterated on the drop back and getting up and attempting to make the tackle short of the end zone.
Did we just run the exact same play to the short side? CORN!
I got up and turned the tv off after the fumble scoop and score. Good riddance to Justin Fuente and Brad Cornelson.
Let Taj throw!
Now just need a TD pass to a eligible lineman to double my football pain for the week.... lol
LET BULLOCK THROW
Let him throw it dammit
Let the kid throw the ball. He's not one of our 100 RBs on the staff.
Great catch while getting interfered with by Bussell
Who on the catch?
Don't get caught up with all the Hustle and Bussel
Obviously, the refs took the day off. PI on the completion uncalled.
I know this game is out of hand, but how do you not throw a flag there?
I hope next season we get away with this fake snap every play
Lol I expected to lose badly, but to come out with this offensive game plan is embarrassing.
I can't believe people defended this offense and play calling for years, especially Justin. And I can't believe people defended Justin.
Pry has a lot of unfucking to do
Younger Virginia Tech players he says....as Holston carries the ball.
Bullock out here completing passes to 8th string wide receivers and Corn still called QB draws up the middle all game.
We'd lose anyway, but I wish we played to win and kept it kind of close
I had to step away for something when it was 27-10 and I come back 47-10. That escalated quickly.
You needed bigger somethings to step away for.
Ha, I was trying to run some routine maintenance on my tankless hot water heater but the cheapo hoses I got from Wally World immediately started leaking.
I figured I'd quit on that before I end up with a flooded garage before all the hardware stores close.
Same. Had to walk out to the field to watch a structure get set and my wife texted me saying it was getting ugly. Checked my phone and had to do a double take. Goddamn.
Going to go out on a limb here and say maybe Bullock should've been playing earlier in the game
Imagine bombing a job interview as much as Brad is doing right now
And now we get to see Corn attempt to get Tahj killed..
Consider this ass whopping by a thoroughly average Maryland Program a final "gift" from Justin Fuente.
The only positive from this is we won't have to see this next year, because this is exactly as good as this team was going to be under Fuente in '22.
QB sneak....Shades of LT3.....
Well, the band at least still sounds good.
Could somebody good at X's and O's explain how running these naked qb dives and qb powers is supposed to be more efficient than a running back, potentially with a lead blocker?
If we're going to run the quarterback, I'd at least like it to be a draw or a read option
Wow we've already reached the "wasn't Derek Jeter just the best?" portion of the broadcast
Honest question since I can't seem to google the right answers. We've been blown out a lot in recent years. This game is likely going to end 57-13 if we're lucky. Have we ever beaten teams 57-13? I'm curious about our ratio of blowouts given vs received. I don't recall beating anyone this bad even in our "glory days".
I distinctly remember being present for some 62-0 games in the late 90s. Also kicked the dog shit out of MD 60ish to 3ish in 2004.
We've beaten teams 62-0!
In the 1999 game against Syracuse, VT beat them 62-0 while they were ranked #16.
We had several such blowouts in 1999. I'm sure we've had others since, but I just don't remember them.
#16 Syracuse '99. We killed them 62-0.
You beat my posting (above) by 2 minutes. Take your leg
First one that comes to mind is App State in 2011. 66-13
https://www.espn.com/college-football/matchup/_/gameId/312460259
ECU 54-17 in 2016

ECU 64-17 in 2017
https://www.espn.com/college-football/game/_/gameId/400937468
UNC 59-7 in 2017
W&M 62-17 in 2018
Beat Akron 77-27 in the Al Clark days
An interesting question, especially during the BCS era where margin of victory was a factor. The likes of Saban and Spurrier didn't hesitate to run up the score, while coaches like Beamer and Richt were more inclined to put in the 3rd string rather than a blowout (respect and all that). Even so, we had a few big final score spreads in our favor in the 90s.
I just want to see competence next year... this team and (outgoing) staff are clueless
So, Maryland is looking to run up the score.... no class, none.
It's our job to stop them, its not their job to take pity on us.
Man I don't give a shit. We have run it up on them a few times in our past. And I'm not bothered too much by the last game of the Fuente era being a shitty embarrassing loss. Very fitting of his tenure.
I hoped for better for Price.
And also, I hate to give pathetic Maryland the talking point and a winning season.
Man I don't give a shit about talking points. None of these coaches are coming back except for the interim HC who is being retained as a line coach.
And if they are as good on the recruiting trail as expected, this game won't matter.
I meant from Maryland fans.
There are certain teams I really hate to lose to, and Maryland is one of them.
At least we now have a coach who knows how to build a defense. Because that has been sorely missing for years now.
Shit I don't care about their fans. And with COVID it's not like I interact with many others right now. And it's just not worth paying attention to the social media cesspool that is Twitter, so.... Meh
I just want Pry to do some recruiting and rebuilding, and when we face Maryland in future years, I want to grind them into the dust like the insects they are.
They are the doormat of the Big 10, which means they should also be our doormat.
We, the fanbase, all know that JC Price is Hokie through and through.
This embarrassment of a game is 100% on CornFu!
Glad I spent the day at the beach!
Another thoroughly embarrassing outing on national TV. We need to make a point of having some kind of press and reminding everyone that our staff has changed. This is not a good look.
I assume Maryland will now score in a heartbeat and we can see more Tahj
I'm all for letting them score just to get Taj more reps
At least the commentators are talking a lot about Coach Pry. That's cool to see.
We're a 6-win program right now, but think about this: After being a 6-win program for 4 years, Fuente won 19 games in two years. In the age of the transfer portal, we can turn things around real quick.
You need to reset your expectations for next year if you think we are going to win 7-9 games next year. 7 would be the absolute ceiling with this squad. Pry has years of work to do to fix the shit Fuente did to us.
100%.
Be prepared for more of this for a couple seasons before it gets better unless we get some kind of breakthrough talent at QB.
Highly disagree. Most portal players want to schools that are already winning and gonna keep winning. We gonna be lucky to win 6 games next year cause of FU and Cos recruiting. This shit is gonna be fix in one night man
Lol. Keep believin', dude.
No disrespect, but this is a fuckin stupid take. Next year is going to blow, big time.
Who's going to play? Who do we have to fill out a P5 two deep?
I want to believe we can take advantage of a down ACC and a weak schedule next year, but I'm certainly not going to look at anything less than 7-8 wins as a red flag. But you do you.
Love the turducken clip!
I think times have changed but all I can think about is how wasteful that is. 3 animals lived and died in horrific conditions just for Madden to fist fuck their frankensteined corpses on tv. I doubt anyone ate it and it probably went straight into the trash.
Something to add?
Actually not explaining myself would be weak.
Also I don't want misunderstood. I appreciate your passion for animal rights and agree with you about the conditions some animals are subjected to.
I thought you could have supported your position a bit better than
Especially considering that this being a football focused board there are probably more John Madden fans than just myself and considering that the guy just passed. Just seemed a bit over the top and disrespectful to the man.
That is all.
.
Same. I cringe when people do tacky or wasteful stuff with food like that. Lack of respect for the animal, plus there are people legit starving in this world. I personally can't stand wasting food.
It's a long season with a super shitty ending, but it's time to turn the page my fellow Hokies. End or an error, start of the Pry era.
I see what you did there.
There, FIFY.
Don't know what the over was, but if anybody bet it, I'd think they're happy right now.
True story:
I had been saving some delicious summer sausage since September and figured today's game was a good excuse to bust it out. Cut it up, put some extra sharp cheddar and some crackers out on a platter. Game goes on, just before 3Q starts I get up to to use the facilities.
Come back to almost all of the sausage gone and the dog scurrying away in shame. He ate a ton of the casings and the effing wrapper.
I take him to the vet's (just down the road) and they get the stuff out of him. 160 bucks later, I get home with about 9 mins left in 4Q.
Seems like I got a good approximation of the game I missed when the vet had me come back and look at the former contents of the dog.
And Cornelson wraps up his VT career by hanging a huge ten points on an atrocious Maryland defense. I ain't counting down to New Year's I am counting down to the end of CornFu.
Hey he was always consistent. He consistently failed to put an offense on the field in the second half, and once again we were shut out in the second half.
Gonna be a 44 point loss... Barring a dozen starter level transfers, next year will be rough. At least there will finally be hope of improvement.
Bright side:
My baby is home from the NICU and vomited 4 times today.
Foreshadowing of today's result? Maybe. But at least she has an esophagus now.
Glad you're focusing on what's important. Hope all goes well with your little one!
Congrats on the birth of your daughter!
Congrats! I know how that goes, had 33 week twins who spent about 2 weeks in the NICU. The secret upside is that NICU babies come home already on a schedule. It's scary as hell but awesome news!
