I feel conflicted by this. On one hand, I understand the need to demonstrate interest to a recruit as early as possible. At the same time, I feel kids should be kids and making scholarship offers to a 13-year-old demonstrates desperation.
This kid has to be pretty special from a maturity standpoint as well. If a program of Virginia Tech's caliber is offering him, there will be several others that follow. Does Tyreke Johnson have the maturity to keep grinding every day and stay humble even though he's receiving this type of attention? Will we have an egomanic by the time he enrolls at VT? Are these fair expectations for someone who was born in the year 2000 (yeah, I beat that made you feel old)?

Wasn't D. Hall offered very early?
I'm with French. He looks 22.
DANNY ALMONTE????
"MF YOU LOOK 30!"
FYI :He also wore a Nike dry fit UF shirt and hand Garnet and Gold (FSU) cleats during the state championship game.. Will be tough to steal him away from either of those schools.
Brother is going to FSU as well
FSU or UF
Sorry, no disrespect intended, but I LOLed at the very serious use of "grinding" with regards to his maturity. I dunno why, but I lost it.
I think it's pretty comical that he's already got crystal ball predictions. He won't sign a LOI for what, 5 years?
My brother just turned 13. He isn't 5 foot and is still lanky because his legs are so long and he's that skinny. He also believes that Minecraft is coding.
What I'm trying to say is I'm not a fan of this
Agree - Not a Fan of looking at 13 year old boys. Getting kind of creepy in here, kind of turned off like finding out that the hot chick at the FRAT party is someones 14 year old sister. Maybe we should wait a few more years.
Sounds like you should have warned Marcus about that.
But have you seen our new recruiting van?
It's like a rolling probable cause
All ashore from the SS Date Rape!
*toot toot*
(This is an Archer reference, for the rest of you)
I thought this was the new recruiting van.
I got my first downvote for a Workaholics reference...wow, did not see that coming.
Most people get theirs for disagreeing with someone's opinion on Logan Thomas so at least you dodged that one
This is true, just a little "butthurt" about getting my first downvote.
Some people here just don't get jokes. Especially ones that are about rape, demographics, and borderline sexism(both ways). So make off color jokes and ones about bad things at your own risk.
It's the internet. Nobody gets jokes on the internet. Good thing Don Rickles got famous in the sixties instead of the nineties or they would've tried him for war crimes.
Reminds me of this..
I thought Alabama hired Lane Kiffin, not us.
Think I saw that Tyrod was offered as an 8th grader, that didn't work out bad.
There's always that recruit that says he commits to the school because they believed in them first and the offer is non-binding, Alabama hands out "non-committable" offers all the time.
I was going to come here and post the same about Tyrod. I remember reading the paper when I was in 8th grade and thinking, "wow, some kid my age just got an offer to play football for college. He must bee good."
And then I went to Hampton and then Tech and got to watch him play for the next 8 years, and it was fantastic.
I would guess that an early offer would have little impact on personal motivation. In 99% of cases a kid either has the drive to be better or he doesn't. I will say that offering him this early means that there is no way the drive question can be answered yet. But sometimes its worth the risk.
So what are his prospects as a TE and when's he getting moved to O-line?
pretty sure Tyrod wasnt offered until high school. The first I remember it happening was when Lane Kiffin offered David Sills a scholarship in 8th grade, and it was so shocking at the time that it was all over the news.
Fun fact, Sills is now just a 3* QB who despite 'committing' to USC is now projected to go to Michigan
247 D Sills
you're just such a different person from who you are at 13 compared to 18, i was at least. i know it's not unprecedented and it does speak highly of the kid but who knows, he might not even like football five years from now.
USC and LSU have done this. If VT fans complain that we are not on that level, this at least proves we are willing to try to be.
Well according to the Orlando Sentinel there's going to be lots of competition. After being asked who's already shown interest he said:
Wow...kids special though...offer early but he will prob be an FSU guy.
