Should be erased. I am not sure how the local product will fare in the spring quarterback derby, but he definitely has a big time arm. I stumbled upon a clip of him playing Briar Woods in the 2011 AA State title game. He scrambles right and throws a ball from his own 15 under pressure, and the ball lands on the opposite 30.

This doesn't constitute a film review, but since Motley is essentially a mystery to VT fans that are not in tune with NRV high school football, I thought I would share.

That's 55 yards in the air for those of you who haven't been in McBryde in a while.
Boone would have thrown it 85. Just sayin...
...and killed someone 8 rows up.
He was just a tad erratic.
Dammit, after watching Twitter blow up today I was hoping this was footage of the drillfield snowball fight. You know, Motley laying a dude out with a snowball to the face from 45 yards away...
I would give any amount of money to watch Logan Thomas, Tyrod Taylor, Michael Vick, Motely and any other strong-armed QBs take on all comers from on top of a snow fort in a snowball fight. Pretty sure people would die.
I feel so validated in my opinions right now.
So what you're saying is....
He would be a terrific tight end.
Post a ten second video of him playing catch and let's see how many "is Motley a QB or a TE?" threads show up in a week.
My bet is 3.
Just think, it could've been him instead of Vad Lee leaving CPJ & GiT in his dust right now, had we not had the fortune to add him to our roster.
And it fell incomplete. He's a great athlete, that's why he has an offer. But as we've seen, being a great athlete doesn't mean you have all the subtleties required to be a good QB. The other problem I have with Motley is that he's not alone. If he was all that we had, he would probably suffice, I just don't anticipate him beating out the rest of the pack. And, he's not Loeffler's guy.
I'd love to see him at WR or FS/Rov.
A HS QB throwing an incomplete pass? Say it ain't so!
Also, when you have to direct the WR to a spot upfield, there's not a great chance that he'll actually get there in time since the QB has to throw in a hurry or get plastered by a DE.
There are probably many highlights of him making complete passes in highschool.
Exactly... and many more completed passes that are not readily available on film.
I'e held off on this for a long while now regarding this "Loeffler's guy" stuff but here it goes:
I am thrilled to have Andrew Ford on board. Based on what we've all seen in reviews he has the potential to be a very successful QB for us. I also like Durkin...he also has the potential to be a successful QB for us.
However, "Loeffler's guy" was David Cornwell and/or Jacob Park. AFTER those two got away we turned to Ford/Durkin. Yes, Ford was brought in by Loeffler and we all love the guy but let's not get out of hand.
Unfortunately, great arm strength means little if you're missing the receivers by 5 yards. Over the top safety help (which he'll he in college) making a correct break on that ball, and it probably gets picked off easily.
The kid will be a good player for VT, just not at QB.
As Papilgee pointed out above, kinda rough to judge a guy so harshly on a broken play. He saw there was no safety, so he told his guy to run deep and chucked it on the run while under pressure. Not a bad incompletion at all. If he's gonna miss, that's where he needs to miss. Don't give the beaten defender a chance to make a play on an underthrown ball. And college football teams play cover 0 (no deep safety) all the time, so it's not like this is something he'd never see on this level.
I know... Rough crowd. Kid throws it 55-60yds in the air, but it falls incomplete = he won't be a QB. It's one play. I've heard he was really impressing Coach Loeffler with his abilities (in Spring and fall camp). However, I also heard that someone forwarded SL the video of this play and SL became disgusted and immediately requested a position change for him.
I wonder how SL would have handled the Sean Glennon mandatory, once a game, across your body from the near to far sideline throw?

By this post, I was in no way endorsing Motley in any way. I think if you watch more of the film, his upside coming out of high school was limited by the Wing-T style of offense that his team ran, which for those of you who have not played or coached in a Wing-T means that the quarterback is rarely given an opportunity to be a pocket passer in that system. Instead, most throws are on bootlegs and sprintouts, and without the benefits of true QB coaching, most wing-T QBs that go forward to big time college football are great athletes with great arms who need to learn the mechanics of the position. You can't teach the arm though.
This wasn't a post to overanalyze Motley as a QB prospect. Instead, I shared it to give people an idea of the raw ability he brings to the table. We will do a much more detailed deep dive on Leal, Motley, and Ford following their performance in the spring game.
Will you analyze Durkin too?
Spring game, Koastal. Spring game.
D'oh, didn't read that far.
D'oh, didn't read that far.
Of course, but he isn't an early enrollee so we won't have a live demo of his ability until August public scrimmages.
To paraphrase a recent comment about LT3 by a scout, You can teach a kid to throw; you can't teach him to throw the ball 55 yards in the air.
We'll see what happens in the spring I guess. His ability is intriguing and I like his ability to escape the pocket and throw the ball 55 yards in the air.
