Based on their record, NC State is not a very good team. They lost to both Richmond and Wright State. They are winless in the ACC. Either VT or NC State will get their first ACC win tonight. The Hokies are favored by 9.5 points with an over/under of 137.5. If Aluma and Mutts can get Wowuona in early foul trouble, the Hokies should be able to play their game both inside and outside and coast to an easy win.

NC State applying (effective) backcourt pressure from the tip, slowing down Murphy, forcing us to burn 10 seconds off the clock to even get into our offense. Also doing a great job denying Aluma the ball in the post while switching on most of screens.. that is the formula for shutting us down. Not looking good.. especially when we're not making them pay for collapsing on the lane any time we do get the ball past the perimeter.
I think the problem of making them pay for collapsing in the pocket, has changed.
Regardless of that officiating, these slow starts are getting old. I know the COVId pause caused some rust but this is rough.
as the season goes on the lack of athleticism / explosiveness on this team becomes more obvious as the limiting factor. can be mitigated to some degree *if* they hit open shots

We look like a team that hasn't played in 2 weeks, which we are. Everything is slow, everyone is timid. They're doubling the post, be ready to shoot or attack on the pass. The hesitation is killing us. That possession with 3 offensive rebounds but no points is embarrassing

I agree. Alleyne is shooting 33% this season and has been even worse since we started playing real teams like Xavier. From airball to giving up a layup. Ugh.

We hit a wall with about 13:00 left. No depth to this team. Mutts and Keve can't go 40 minutes every game. It's just not sustainable.

They should be rotating more guys in and developing, but CMY has been quite stubborn with his bench this year. He's not really using it at all. The only guys he's using are Pedulla, Maddox, and N'Guessan and they're really only playing breather minutes. Just short stints, usually before the media timeouts, to give a starter a quick break. They're hardly apart of the game action, especially N'Guessan. All 3 should be used more, especially on nights when the starters are struggling (coughAlleynecough).
And seeing Ojiako under CMY, he should just sit him down at the end of the season and tell him to transfer. It's clear we're not going to use him for whatever reason. We're doing a disservice to him just wasting his eligibility sitting on the bench, and he's taking a roster spot. It's beneficial to both sides to split. He could get a chance to play elsewhere and we can get a portal transfer we can use.
As for Haynes and Kidd, I have no idea. They never play at all. Maybe they're hurt. Maybe they redshirted and I missed it. Maybe we just busted on them (my choice if you made me pick). Those two are the ones that should be getting the filler minutes if needed and the others (Maddox, Pedulla, and N'Guessan) should be a larger part of the actual gameplan.
Alleyne hurt us a bunch but its beyond him tonight. The layoff hurt more. Slow at times, sloppy at times, just inconsistent play. Got outworked a lot. A real discouraging display

Not making the NIT either at this rate. NC State recently lost by 14 at home to Wright State as a part of a 5 game losing streak. This is a bad team. And so are we.

positive+ this team has some skilled shooters and plays solid defense... can go on a tear and rack up a 10-0 run fairly often, and can dominate teams with equal or lesser athleticism
minus- this team goes scoreless against athletic defenses more often than they go on scoring sprees and can't stop NBA-level scorers with any consistency
since we play in the ACC we're going to face off against a bunch of teams that feature those kryptonite elements
Too many 2nd half turnovers and not enough reliable scoring weapons anyway. Aluma is worth watching at least.

Actually it was not. Bracketology had us as a last 4 byes team. We were supposed to be good and our schedule was decent. And losses in November and December would be ok with a decent ACC performance. But losing to a team with a 200+ RPI is brutal.
Hokies could have gotten the benefit of the doubt from the committee before this fiasco.
I'm at the point where I'm hoping the tournament doesn't happen due to COVID and we don't have to get bad for missing it after being labeled a Final Four dark horse.
Im not sure how much of that was attributed to the long break, but that was about as bad of a loss that we could have taken. We do not appear to be anything close to the team a lot of us thought we were in the pre season. Mike Young and his staff have a lot of work to do.
I hate to be that guy but:
- we're regressing in year 3 (with a big regression coming next year barring some stud transfers)
- our 2 highest rated recruits of this staff's era transferred away
- our best player of the last 3 years was recruited by the previous staff
- our 2021 recruiting class was ranked only #90 in the country
- we have 3rd year players who don't appear to be developing at all (Ojiako can't get a minute and Alleyne is regressing - horrible this year against any half decent team)
I'm not saying all is lost and let's burn it to the ground, but I am saying there are a lot of familiar warning signs. Something to keep an eye out for. Staff has their work cut out for them to save face this year and put together a team with any tournament hopes for years 4 and 5.
More than anything we need true scorers. Guys who can get to the rim and create their own shot. Bigger guards would be a plus. That pretty offense and great ball movement looks nice and all, but it's not getting it done. Plus our shooters will be more open if we have threats to drive and score.
Final thought for tonight itself: NC State outworked us tonight. I can stand losing, but I can't stand being outworked. Not the first time this year either, this team seems "too soft" among other issues.
There were some, not many, that said we won't notice Radford's absence and oh boy, no one has ever been more wrong about something.

Mutts has had a stretch here over many games where he looks to be a liability out there. His careless turnovers and missed layups are costing us dearly. Who else in the starting 5 do you say to yourself is a top half ACC player?
Not sure where the answers are... if Maddox and Pedulla are the direction we go well then we are really searching.

Best case, we get a couple good transfers and are comparable to this year.
We just haven't recruited acc athletes for the most part. Need some serious adjustments from the staff moving forward.
