I say that often when cutting trees/chopping wood and nooobody ever gets the reference. Also, sidebar: I think Ben wrote/directed/starred in a lot of these movies throughout the years just as an excuse to get ripped out of his damn mind. And I don't think he's ever gotten his kudos for that. Funny as can be, but dude stays shredded. At the off chance Stiller reads TKP, I just want him to know someone noticed.

I love the hire. Wisconsin plays on their toes and demands winning in the trenches. Outside of Pitt's commitment to win the line of scrimmage on defense, there isn't another team in the Coastal that places so much priority on getting a push up front. Now, the challenge will be to merge Wisconsin's attitude, posture, and technique with the play design for the "power spread" offensive system that expected offensive cooridinator Tyler Bowen and QB coach Brad Glenn wants to run.
While linemen may miss blocks, I don't think I will use the phrase "too passive" often with Rudolph's lineman. If I do, you are looking at a player who may lose his spot.

"power spread" offensive system that expected offensive cooridinator Tyler Bowen and QB coach Brad Glenn wants to run.
This will be the interesting dynamic as far as what this offense looks like. You've got an OC and passing game coordinator that's scheme seems to be pretty different than a lot of what our new OL/Run Game Coordinator did when he called plays at Wisconsin.

honestly, it's a little editorial liberty on my part. it's not the 80 Layups Offense like you'd say Air Raid or Run N Shoot, but i really hope it could be!
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
This could be a reason that Rudolph is leaving, to expand his knowledge of offenses. I feel like at Wisconsin you can only do so much because it's ingrained to run the ball. Learning new offenses and techniques might be something he wants to do.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
Now we just need a running back with a band that connotes Christmas or Santa so when they break a long run for a touchdown we can say that Rudolph is taking him to town.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
I'm pretty sure he hit a half-court three at the buzzer to beat VT by 1 point during the Buzz Williams era. If it wasn't him, he was definitely on the team.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
Assuming he can bring in some of his recruits from Wisconsin? Although, with ESD behind us, would they have to transfer via the portal? How would that work if one of the OL signees wants to leave Wisconsin to follow Rudolph at VT?

Bad news is, I have to do film reviews of tape from the worst camera angle not called "Missouri" from all of college football.
Oh, Quinn Carroll, yes the OL who was at the infamous recruiting dinner at Kabukis with Devin Ford, just entered the portal, along with a flood of other good players.

Short story, they took Carroll, his family, and Devin Ford (who was Fuente's top recruit target that year) to Kabukis following the spring game. I was there for my mother-in-law's birthday dinner. Fuente sat as far away from Ford and Carroll as possible and spent the whole dinner whispering to Vice. Bud and some of the recruiting staff were the only coaches who talked to Ford (unless Fuente said goodbye to him out of eyeshot.) Carroll was there with his brother and family and he just seemed to talk with them.
Bud looked like the recruiter/salesman, not Fuente. Up to that moment, I was all in. At that moment, I began to worry that he couldn't be the guy to win these kids over in competative recruitments. And sure enough, look what we got.

Did you pick this destination to avoid cheese, or did your better half force you? Sushi, Hibachi or both? Too much great football analyses not to muck it up with another controversial food take.

What a damming story! Pretty much what happened to our program in the Fuente era.
How did this happen without someone else noticing it before he became a head coach? I think Fuente really enjoys the Xs/Os, scheming, and competition, and was pretty good at that. He is not good, nor did he seem to enjoy, recruiting and managing the Jimmys and Joes.
Here's hoping we get it all with Pry and company!
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
I'm really wondering if Whit at least in part knows he royally effed up the search with Fu. He probably just wanted to hire a big splash name and I believe also hired a consulting firm. Probably a lot of the stuff that really matters got totally glossed over. I think he really leaned more on some of the VT old guard for input on this search. Seems like we got a totally opposite and dynamic personality in Pry that has both connections to the program/state as well as big time P5 experience.

Great news! Now we have the offensive line's version of Bud, which has to be a good thing. I kinda thought he was out of the picture when things went silent over the holidays, but maybe that was just Rudolph pondering his options, or else the negotiations associated with the hire. We've needed this kind of smash-mouth hire for a while, and it appears to have finally happened!

Just like all of us, he has some hope and relief the staff has been turned over. Hopefully this staff can deliver the goods to make all of us more cheery

He made some good points all along, this site just didn't want to hear it. Kind of like the one true friend who has the guts to tell you that your GF is wrong for you while you're actually in the relationship. Meanwhile, the others just wait to grab drinks at the bar after the breakup and tell you about all the warning signs they saw all along.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
Yes he's made good points over the past few years. He's also been incredibly dismissive, rude and downright hostile. I've been on the pointy end of some of his comments, and when called out on it there's never a "my bad", just a deflection or pivot to something else.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
Its not that we didn't want to hear it, it is that some of those points we had heard in every thread for years. It gets tiresome. Glad to see a new chapter though.

We don't need to rehash it, and I was not trying to stir up a hornets nest, but there were also times where he got downvoted into oblivion just for having a "negative" opinion. I can't blame him for taking umbrage at that kind of response, which is against community guidelines. I'm not skilled enough to find it, but I recall even Joe coming to the defense at one point for this exact reason. All of this is to say, there were blatant warning signs that Fuente and Co were never up to the task (hell, Shibest was the only guy not named Foster, Wiles, or Gray with ANY P5 experience), but this site as a collective group refused to acknowledge them. As several folks have said elsewhere, amateur hour is over. And thank goodness for that.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
Nah, not a hornets nest. DC beats the drum longer and louder than some and it can get old. But honestly, TKP wouldn't be the same without his contributions and it's a positive thing.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
Look at all of us. Acting like adults and such. LOL. Let's hope we start winning some games and this place gets back to being what it once was. As they say, "winning cures everything."

part of why I stayed gone as long as I did. It wasn't the whole site, but some people here gave up way later than they should've and seemed to delight in taking the wrong tone with anyone who disagreed. It's in the past now though.
As for DC, the guy has come a long way from his old posting habits.

I hope his lines just mash some dudes and we can get our running backs looking great again. It really does feel like building off the recruiting of all the big uglies, Pry put a big emphasis on the trenches since this is probably one of the splashier hires.
I like.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
Purely anecdotal here. My brother is a D3 ref in Wisconsin and has reffed some spring practices for UW. He had this to say "Good hire. Watched him coach in some of the practices I've worked. Knows his shit and communicates well"

Virginia Tech #Hokies HC Brent Pry said former #Wisconsin AHC/OL Coach Joe Rudolph reached out to Pry for the OL Coach opening. Pry shared his vision for the future of the program and Rudolph wanted a change. Says he checks all the boxes. They recruited each other, Pry says.โ Matej Sis (@MatejS247) January 13, 2022

Associate Head Coach? I thought that was J.C.'s title?
Edit: Just checked the coaches page and it looks like they both have that title listed. I guess you can have 2.
2 > 1
It's math.
Associate to the Head Coach
Rudolph: Associate Head Coach for Offensive Matters
Price: Associate Head Coach for Defensive Matters
You mean Rudolph: OLCAHCFOMRGC for short? Or does RGC come before AHCFOM?
Nah, its gotta be like titling a dog.
AHCFOM Rudolph RGC OL
Hell yeah! That's what I like to see, win those trenches!
Every damn time I see VT news today.

Home Run Hire
Very excited about this hire.
I left this in the other thread. I will leave it here as well.
Excellent gif choice!
I love Heavyweights. Ben Stiller kills me in it.
All time great movie.

That, and no matter how still you've been, he's always ......
Sorry, wrong thread.

ex-Coach Fu?
finally we can "Run the Dang ball"
Took me a minute to notice ALL the pancakes. Looking forward to seeing a lot more.

I think it'll be fine, common goal between both of them is to have the OL fuck people up like the good ole days.
Even if scheme is different, the "80 layups" concept in terms of vision and goals should be consistent and translate well.
I feel like I'm about to ask a really dumb question, but what is the 80 layups concept?
honestly, it's a little editorial liberty on my part. it's not the 80 Layups Offense like you'd say Air Raid or Run N Shoot, but i really hope it could be!
Ah, thank you. I dig it, glad to hear he lets his QBs make decisions too.
This could be a reason that Rudolph is leaving, to expand his knowledge of offenses. I feel like at Wisconsin you can only do so much because it's ingrained to run the ball. Learning new offenses and techniques might be something he wants to do.
Can you elaborate on what you mean by power spread? Is it just the Urban Meyer offense?
Power run game with some spread passing concepts. Michigan or PSU are good examples. OSU runs spread not power spread.
"Run, Run, Rudolph"?
Now we just need a running back with a band that connotes Christmas or Santa so when they break a long run for a touchdown we can say that Rudolph is taking him to town.
Kenji Christian is pretty close?
Syracuse had a basketball player names Christmas I believe...
LSU had Trindon Holliday as a RB way back when.
I'm pretty sure he hit a half-court three at the buzzer to beat VT by 1 point during the Buzz Williams era. If it wasn't him, he was definitely on the team.
Grant No-el?
The offense doppelgรคnger of Bud Foster
Don't get them in a room together. The universe might implode.

Boom. Let's run the damn ball. Right up the middle of the coastal soft underbelly.
Assuming he can bring in some of his recruits from Wisconsin? Although, with ESD behind us, would they have to transfer via the portal? How would that work if one of the OL signees wants to leave Wisconsin to follow Rudolph at VT?

I love hibachi.
Flaming volcano onion/choo choo train is tough to say no to.
A personal favorite.
I would swim in Yum Yum sauce.
At hibachi you get 4 sauces. My combo is:
Yum yum, yum yum, ginger, yum yum.
Isn't Yum yum sauce is pretty much mayo made with rice wine vinegar?
The yum yum I've had doesn't seem to be, but I'm no samurai chef.
Cuing John Belushi....
Speaking of making sauces with mayo, if y'all ain't never tried mayo plus adobo sauce you are missing out.
Went to Kabuki's with my now wife before ring dance. Good stuff.
Bizarre. Thanks for the context.
I was always more of a Sakura guy when I was in school ($). The black ceiling tiles really give it an interesting "former gentleman's club" vibe.
I'm so old I only know the Sakura building as Fazolis...
I miss Fazolis. I hear there is one going into the old shoneys in Dublin.
Wait...the Fazoli's closed when i was in school but are you telling me its now a hibachi place?
If Sakura is hibachi, then yes that's what I'm telling you. I've never been to Sakura so I have no clue.
Drive thru hibachi. Can get a chicken hibachi dinner for cheaper than a McDonald's combo.

He should have put a $100 bill in the back of the playbook
There's your splash hire, boys! This is great! Now we just have to recruit some big ol corn fed bulldozers!
I know there is a lot of excitement, but please, can we avoid the word "corn" in our posts.... I need time to recover....๐
It's lower case "corn", not "Corn" or "FU Corn", so it's ok.

careful....we don't want all of the Corns...

Rudolph had other obligations that took him all over the country and world during the holidays. Surely you know the stories.
Big time hire. Big time. Pry's expectations are higher than getting pushed around by Duke. I love it. Let's go.
+1 and this is like the 5th post by DC Wilson today that I vehemently agree with which just seems odd.
I think I can speak for DC Wilson here, he is happy we got rid of our crap ass coaching staff
Right? Seems odd that DC is being positive. Something's off...
Just like all of us, he has some hope and relief the staff has been turned over. Hopefully this staff can deliver the goods to make all of us more cheery

Not gonna lie that looks like a good time.
Similar to jet skis have you ever seen a sad man in a tank?
I mean, I did see the third episode of Our World War. They weren't particularly happy.
Only because there aren't really any windows.
Downtown Richmond not too long ago:
The best is how far he made it, from Fort Pickett in Nottaway Count to Richmond City hall. Really shows our Eisenhower military ready roads worked.
Omg I'm dying! When was this? I need a news article, y'all. That's a fugging APC just speeding on down the street!
Long live Tank Guy!
Never thought I'd get an email asking if anyone was involved with "stealing a tank" from a job site to come forward, yet that happened.
Somewhere in Pittsburgh, Narduzzi has to be coughing up a few pierogies after hearing this news.
Purely anecdotal here. My brother is a D3 ref in Wisconsin and has reffed some spring practices for UW. He had this to say "Good hire. Watched him coach in some of the practices I've worked. Knows his shit and communicates well"
Where in Wisconsin?
He refs all over the state for the WIAC. He spends a lot of time in a car during the fall.
I was hoping for a G5 guy with mid G5 coaching ability
This guy knows how to set achievable goals.
Holy Schnikes, this guy is Bud Foster:
Coach Rudolph mic'd up
I REALLLY REALLY want a video of the two of them together
they're never in the same place at the same time though...so that would be impossible.
It's like Guy Fieri, the lead singer of smash mouth and the lead singer for The Offspring. Have you ever seen them at the same place at the same time?
Didnt think so. Therefore, they are the same man.
You have never seen me and Batman in the same room at the same time either, therefore I am Batman
We could have one on offense, and one on defense.
It's all we ever really wanted.
This press conference is going to need its own thread when its over. I was already bought in on Pry. This content is great. Every question he's answered has been about building VA recruiting relations.
Not to mention the "we're not just going to throw darts past the Mississippi" portion
Dang. That says a lot about the respect Pry already has in the industry. Love it.
