We have a competition!

LET'S GO!

"Vick, dashing back . . . here he comes again . . . Electrifying . . . and have you ever seen anything like this?"

Hokies!

...with spirits true and faithful...

I can't believe I might be the first to make this joke, but the QB whisperer took him aside and whispered "... linebacker ..." ?

this is wild...I have a feeling the next couple years are going to absolutely bury our previous coaches. The heights of their incompetence keep reaching higher and higher. The only real positive take away, for me, is that UVA is so terrible that they only managed 1 win against these jokers.

The real weird thing about it as that we still technically maintained bowl eligibility every year throughout the duration. Just a strange tenure, felt like the staff couldn't get out of their own way

He was a 2* (.783) prospect coming out of high school. If we had taken a commitment from him people would have lost their shit. Let's not run away with the idea that idea that Andrew Luck really wanted to play here and Fu told him to pound sand.

He also reportedly had a PWO offer as a LB, its not like he was completely ignored.

(add if applicable) /s

Sure, except the staff had a shot at redemption with him out of the portal last year after he had proven himself better than his recruit ranking at St. Francis, and they chose Blumrick over him again.

Looks like Tre Turner and Garbutt were both lobbying for Brown as well based on the Twitterverse (exchanges between both players and Brown following Brown's announcement last night)

I think blumrick was 2 years ago right? he had to sit a year? or has covid year affected my memory again?

Blumrick was last year. We panicked after losing Hooker and QP.

With good reason.

I still wonder why Fuente didn't do everything within his earthly power to keep Hooker. Or QP.

I suspect he did.

HH and QP were smart enough to know they were throwing away their dreams with him as coach.

Wonder if Shane had anything to do with this? Certainly excited to have him here...

He's from Fredericksburg, but I'd hope Shane would give Tech his full endorsement.

A decade on TKP and it's been time well spent.

Just went from not feeling good about the QB room to things might actually be okay now. Time to get some playmakers in a linebacker or two and some wide recievers.

Directions from Blacksburg to whoville, go north till you smell it then go east until you step in it

I say it's gonna be a OL or 2. A WR or 2 A DL or 2 maybe a linebacker and probably a corner

I'll modify my statement to say I was nervous about the QB room but this makes me feel better in the sense we now have depth. Wells is the more intriguing but hasnt played any P5 yet so getting a guy like Brown with a bunch more experience is good thing. We still have alot fo holes to plug and fix before we are really a 6 win team but this is a nice start.

What can Brown do for us?

SC vs FL game film

Check out around the 3:45min mark of the video. Looks pass-first QB with some escapability in the pocket. Strong arm, frame like Jerod, but maybe not as shifty.

Get well!

Lee Suggs!!

57 yards in the air on that one at 3:45 :o

Finally some great news on the player side of things. Seems like our starter for next year (three seasons of college football, Brown has completed 313-of-519 passes (60.3%) for 3,845-yards and 36 touchdowns to 12 interceptions. ) while we develop the other three. Plus tops in character and beloved by SC from the coach on down. Now on to some targets for him to throw to. Happy days are here again Hokies.

Need blockers before targets IMO. Won't matter how good the targets are if the qb doesn't have time to get them the ball

Onward and upward

Well yes, but I am confident in Rudolph taking card of business there. Meanwhile I have forgotten the name of the receivers coach that we haven't announced yet but hopefully soon to help attract good receivers out of the portal (looking at you Antane Wells)

WHO??

Touchdown Tech!!

I thought someone elsewhere on TKP was referring to Antonio Brown as an option for WR coach and was seriously thrown for a loop.

A decade on TKP and it's been time well spent.

He got used to playing without protection last year.

Adding a quote from 247 for clarification:

After two games against Eastern Illinois and East Carolina, South Carolina's in the bottom half of the SEC in yards per carry and sacks allowed. On Saturday against the Pirates, the Gamecocks took almost three quarters, to find any kind of consistency with their ground game.

You love to see a lifelong fan who grew up wanting to play for VT get a chance to do so on scholarship.

I am very interested to see the QB competition play itself out.

Guy "wants to be here"

I want the guy who cares about VT all day.

Great to have Brown and Wells in the boat. Guessing they're both on a par with BB3, and neither is close to our old Hooker. But hoping they'll both be playing in a much better O system than BB or Hooker ever did.

Yep. So frustrating when the next person just can't live up to your old Hooker

"That's it guys. Let's get out of here. That cold drink's waitin' on us, let's go." - Mike Young after win no. 300.

Wells > BB3 imo. Brown we'll see he's more of a wildcard

I think both have better arms than BB.

Always had a hard time getting a clear picture of what BB3 really had to offer when he was always running for his life in the Corny offense. Hoping the new guys have better o-line protection and better arm strength.

In some ways I agree that it's hard to get a good idea of what BB could do given the situations he was put in. I mean, just look at how Hooker and, to a lesser extent, QP performed once they got out of Blacksburg. That evidence suggests to me that BB was so poorly misused that we all think he's mid when perhaps he's not. (Let's be honest, lots of folks thought Hooker was mediocre at VT and QP couldn't throw)

On the other hand, we did see BB try to throw the ball and he clearly doesn't have the arm talent required to play at this level. He's a great athlete and showed tremendous heart but he just isn't a quarterback. 🤷‍♂️

I haven't seen any film of Wells yet but watching Brown it's very noticeable how much better his arm talent is compared to BB. Night and day.

I imagine both of these guys are big upgrades from BB. Regardless, Brad Glenn would get way more production out of any of them than Cornelsen ever could. Their track records make that abundantly clear. I'm not nearly as concerned about QB as I have been for the last 4 or 5 years

Yes! (Now tell me how to feel about this)

My guesses (keyword) on how to view these two portal additions and our QB room for 2022:

- The primary competition will be between Jason Brown and Grant Wells for the starting job. I think that job comes down to whether we want the steadier, higher floor option in the veteran Jason Brown, or do we want to go with the erratic, higher ceiling option with more remaining eligibility in Grant Wells?

- Both players could prove my assessment of them wrong in the spring.

- Bullock will also be in this competition if he sticks around (haven't seen any suggestion he won't), and who knows how he will respond to Brad Glenn's coaching and development as well so I don't mean to discount him. I was basing my first thought on the simple fact that both Jason Brown and Grant Wells are older and have more FBS experience.

- I love Devin Farrell as a prospect, but I think if he's going to stick at QB it's likely a redshirt year for him. If he plays in 2022 I would guess that means he moved to WR or DB.

Id be shocked if Farrell gets more than a couple of practices at QB. The staff was already talking about moving him around and seeing how QB would go before he even got on campus, I can't think of any time a coach talked about positional flexibility for someone they think can be a P5 QB. Major Farley/Pimpleton vibes

To be fair, we also had a P5 staff (and many others) that had penciled Malik Willis in for a position change before he got to college. He flipped to Auburn because they offered him a shot at QB. Both he and Farrell were state title runner-ups in major GA HS football.

I think it's most likely Devin Farrell plays at DB/WR in college, but we have a recent example of a very similar situation playing out where that player is now slated to be an early round NFL draft pick.

I think it's most likely Devin Farrell plays at DB/WR in college

This is where I'm at as well. However, I appreciate the fact that Pry & his staff have (seemingly) told Farrell that he's going to get a shot at QB first but they'll also likely try him out at other positions.

Granted, we may also just be in a position right now where our talent needs are such that a guy like Farrell does legitimately have a real shot at QB and Gunner Givens will get a real look on defense. If those positions were more solidified, then maybe the staff would have been telling them more explicitly where they see them ending up.

Read a couple of the articles and this news has growing levels of excitement. When the new coaching staff started off with targeting guys that want to be at VT I think the mentality and desire of Brown is exactly what they were looking for.

Has more arm talent than I think people expect.

Five star get after it 100 percent Juice Key-Playing. MAN

With the commits I'm looking forward to a good spring game competition at QB, anyone know if the new regime has any plans to have a televised/streamed spring game for those of us not able to make it to Blacksburg?

Blasphemy!!

According to Dwight Vick there's an upcoming announcement. Hints are there'll be football alumni engagement, there'll be fan engagement, and I expect at a minimum, ACC Network.

TKPhi Damn Proud

Thank god. Fuente's disdain of the spring game and not using it as a recruiting and fan engagement tool was high on my list of gripes with him. That irritated more than it probably should.

That was literally the first red flag for me.

He wanted everyone to believe he was playing chess.

He was revealed to be playing tic tac toe.

Maybe that's why he didn't want anyone watching practice.

I suspect that a lot of these things are colored by the success of the coach (or in this case, lake thereof). If he had won games we would all be talking about how genius it is to not give our opponents prep material or whatever. I don't remember the context, but I remember hearing someone say something to the effect of "if you're going to act like Belichik, you have to also win like Belichik".

How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Jet Sweep

I had this conversation a couple years ago with a friend who's a Washington State fan. He said having a quirky coach is only fun when he's winning. When you're losing it's just annoying.

While we eagerly await French's review, here is a review of Brown's play vs Florida by a SC guy.

He seems to have a reasonably strong arm and pocket presence. He can definitely push the ball down the field - something we didn't have last year.

That link takes me to a medical website.

Oops - sorry about that. I fixed the link.
