That's certainly a pun, I'll grant you that.

I love that his first comment is "Let's get to work!"

Sounds like he means business.

Well, well, well. Granted, he is just one piece of the puzzle.

A decade on TKP and it's been time well spent.

If we can get Jacquaez Powell from ECU (center),

And Antwane Wells from JMU,

Then we can have (Po)Well➡️ Wells➡️Wells for plays that really Turntables

How much eligibility does he have? Just a question.

Wonder who starts. Neither of the transfers has stats that jump off the page, but they're both probably competent. Although who knows what type of offense we're even running. We still have Bullock, and I'm guessing Blumrick sees action in another role.

I'm sure it'll be a competition, but I'll be amazed if it's not Wells. Brown's numbers are middling at best, while Wells has had a lot of success with Marshall. Nice to have a guy like Brown on the roster though. Need a backup with some experience.

Apparently USCE OC runs a weird system and Brown had trouble picking it up. When they simplified it he did good but the OC wanted to go back to the hard system and he started to struggle again

Also can't ignore the difference in competition levels of the defenses you face at USCe vs Marshall

Wells yards and TDs are nice, but those INTs are troubling

Now finish up them taters; I'm gonna go fondle my sweaters.

Good to know. I just see 50% completion percentage and don't get excited.

not sure how much stock you can put on completion percentage by itself. But, FWIW, Blumrick went 16-31 (51.6%) in 2021. BB posted a 55.7% completion percentage. I get not getting excited about it, but at the same time, I think we need bodies and I'm excited to have a guy who truly wants to be here. Its now up to Brad Glenn to help the QBs improve their stats and help the team win.

Onward and upward

Don't get me wrong, I'm happy he's here. I just think from highlights and numbers, Wells seems to be the better QB. But we'll see how it all shakes out!

Context matters with Qb stats . Rarely were those throws down the field or from the pocket (a few ie Payoute, but not many). Mainly screens and scripted quick throws.

To me it's very simple in that Blumrick is not a P5 QB in every facet. Average runner, below average arm talent and simply doesn't have the skill to make plays on the run and in the pocket. I don't care how we scripted plays and his completion percentage in that context.

I am not that good at links or embedding, but this quote is from 247:

After two games against Eastern Illinois and East Carolina, South Carolina's in the bottom half of the SEC in yards per carry and sacks allowed. On Saturday against the Pirates, the Gamecocks took almost three quarters, to find any kind of consistency with their ground game.

Brown is too well prepared to play behind a bad line. I don't think he started until the guy in front of him got hurt because of the line, and the line did get better, it's not like he ever had a lot of time to throw.

Sometimes we live no particular way but our own

What role is Blumrick seeing action? He can't run or pass. I like the kid but man I truly hope he sees no action unless we are up 50....

I hope he switches to WR

maybe there just isn't a place for the guy on offense?

QB - no
RB - no
WR - can the dude run routes and catch better than what we have?
TE - not big enough to block
HB - maybe? He would still need to put on some weight...and again, can he catch?

Realistically if he can catch a little, you could flex him out wide and use him for fades/jump balls against undersized corners, particularly in the red zone. I don't see him being able to put on the mass and develop the blocking skills in one offseason to be a true TE or even H-Back. Will be interesting to see how this shakes out.

If I see one more fade attempt in the end zone...

I would rather a TE sweep on four consecutive plays (read Brandon Patterson's TSL from Aug 21, it worked really well actually!) than a single fade, unless we convince Randy Moss to lace up

The Cup is going nowhere Mikey!

If not a fade, you remember how Syracuse beat us (insert sad face) by throwing a pass up to their 6'6" receiver who caught it easily over our 5'10" corner?

If Blumrick moves to WR, he'll be our tallest outside target since Bucky.

No, I *don't* want to go to the SEC. Why do you ask?

We don't love dem Hoos.

I heard somewhere that Bucky was 6'7".

Started out 6'7". Was 6'13" by the time he graduated.

I thought I read somewhere that Logan Thomas was God's gift?

That was tattooed on the back of his arms. I have no knowledge of what lead him to have that it put there but doesn't have to be egotistical; it might mean that he considered his strength was a gift from God.

I think I remember him saying the tattoo was because each day was a gift from God.

Take the shortest route to the ball and arrive in bad humor.

Yeah, lots of people just assumed he was being an arrogant prick, but didn't bother to get the truth.

Deposit whiskey, receive wisdom.

I may have imagined it because I can't find any other info, but for some reason I was thinking he had more tattooed on his back and it all made sense when you could read it all.

Thanks to whiskey, no I don't. And frankly, good sir/madam, I don't care to.

Sure, lots of good mismatch opportunities with taller WRs, love his potential there. But the playcall fade just gives me the shivers. This could be because we mostly tried it with Ford and Cam, both 6-1, so hardly a huge mismatch.

The Cup is going nowhere Mikey!

(edited) Also, thanks to being dumb, and unfortunately not whiskey, just double posted. I'll just keep this here.

The Cup is going nowhere Mikey!

I'm pretty sure that James Mitchell's season-ending injury was on a TE sweep, so idk if I want that...

slot receiver ayyyy lmao

He can run the wildcat offense, so probably good for goal line situations. The problem with him is there's a reason the wildcat isn't typically a good base offense.

How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Jet Sweep

It use to be that when you had raw athletes without any route running, catching, throwing skills you moved them to Defense. Kam Chancellor being an example. Maybe he could add some weight and move to safety?

We're already deeper at QB than we were in 2021...now let's get some WRs to catch passes from whoever wins the job.

I'm concerned about o line. I think we probably have some talent at wr that's just undiscovered as of yet due to incompetent coaching. But we're actually thin at o line and the qb needs time in the pocket and a decent running game otherwise it won't matter how good the wrs are

Yoooo LFG!

Looks like we got two guys with FBS experience who are looking to compete for this job with Bullock and Farrell (if he sticks at QB).

I'm glad we were able to pick up both he and Jason Brown.

If Ferrell doesn't work at QB. I see him switching to CB or WR

Same. I think he could be a P5 player at either spot.

Wells is a good quarterback. The proper coaching will make him a great quarterback. It's on Glenn at this point. I'm very excited.

This is what has me excited. A QB Coach/Staff that can truly develop players and not hold them back.

Proud Hokie since 2004.

I'm getting the feeling that we aren't going to truly appreciate how far things had fallen until CBP has been on the jn a couple years.

Maybe I'm just excited, but it seems like he's not only hit the ground running, but has already made significant improvements. LET'S GO!!

"... I think he played his nuts off. And you can quote me on that shit."

HOKIES!!!

I think Pry has been doing a good job and even setting something up like this where he has both of his transfer QBs announce at the same time (which will snag some additional attention) is just a way of helping to throw up the flags and say we're here to do things our way. He has his work cut out for him, and the next few commits will be important for his first season, but I like him so far.

Yeah, hard agree. Nothing he's done yet has been huge, but every opportunity he's had he's figured out a way to maximize, going all the way back to hosting an alumni call literally within hours of being named big whistle. Leadership like that breeds confidence and enthusiasm.

"... I think he played his nuts off. And you can quote me on that shit."

So is he a grad transfer with immediate eligibility since he's been at Marshall for 3 years already? And 3 years eligibility remaining too...haha that's crazy to think about.

I don't think he's a grad transfer, but all transfers now get one-time immediate eligibility

Ahh ok I somehow totally missed that! Thanks

Correct, immediately eligible based on the one time free transfer rule and has 3 years left.

LETTS GO!!!!! Step in the right direction to at least improve from the current debacle of our offense!

I need Grant to go off against WVU on September 24th. Would be poetic.

Three years of eligibility. Hopefully he is a solid bridge while Pry and Co. start building us into a national powerhouse.

His decision was made after a phone call with longtime Virginia Tech assistant coach Bud Foster. All Foster told him was, "We win. They don't."

Last time we had a Grant at QB he was also from West Virginia.

Why would you say this? What awful memories.

So watched the highlights of both Wells and brown; it appears that wells throws a little bit behind, Brown seemed a little more sharp. From a first look, I'd say start brown and develop Wells who has 3 years left of eligibility

Hokies, Local Soccer, AFC Ajax, Ravens

I like the play with 2 and let them fight it out. Clearly will be a competition.

Roanoke Times Article tells some of the story of getting Wells and our little different approach on coaching responsibilities

"This is the first time I will have a separate quarterback coach and offensive coordinator, so I had a lot of questions about that," Wells said. "...I was excited to have somebody to go to after each play and not distract coach Bowen from calling the plays. That's one thing that stood out the most."

"I'm too drunk to taste this chicken" - Colonel Sanders via Ricky Bobby

Thanks for linking the article. This was another section that stood out to me:

Wells said the coaching staff was "extremely open" with him about their plans at quarterback.

Those plans involved signing multiple transfer quarterbacks — the Hokies got a verbal commitment from South Carolina quarterback Jason Brown at the same exact moment as Wells — and having an open competition between all the quarterbacks during spring camp.

"They were not afraid to say they were going to sign another guy, but that was needed," Wells said. "I could see that from a mile away that their quarterback room was thin. You can't have a thin quarterback room going into any season."

I'm glad the staff isn't playing any games with the guys they've got coming in. The honesty is refreshing, and I think it means a lot that both Wells & Brown want to be at VT knowing they aren't promised the starting job.

Ummm notice he said coach Bowen. Who hasn't been officially announced.

Excellent detective work. Have a leg

Yeah, Bowen has been tagged by multiple recruits and a commit at this point. Very funny that they couldn't just announce him

Wells is a gamer with critical experience at a very good G5 school. Marshall is a good program with a lot of pride, etc. I have no question Wells can play QB in the ACC. It's up to the new coaches to develop him in the offense and get the most out of it. I think this is a great addition.

Thanks for the article!! Wells seems to be a good pick up. I don't think that the competition from his conference to ours will be that much of a change, minus Clemson's roster and Miami's roster. The ACC is not great, and if he can cut down on the INT's, we should be in good shape.

watching his highlights, they threw a lot of balls near and between the hashes. Don't know if that contributed to the ints but the number of sideline out routes was minimal. will be interesting to see how Glenn structures the passing tree
