Surprised this isn't generating more buzz. New head coach took time out of his busy schedule to do fan site podcast in his first 90s in the chair. Just another example of the new regime's outreach efforts. Pry came across as genuine, likeable, and he was forthcoming and beleiveable enough to feel like what he said means something. It seems like he will get a pretty decent return on a 30 minute investment. His personality just seems like a much better cultural fit for this program. If his staff is competent - and they definitely get the benefit of the doubt - he should have great success here. Some quick insights he gave:
- He still spends an hour a day with the defensive staff
- He wants an offense that is "multiple" and incorprates elements that gave him as a defensive coach problems.
- He knows his players and talks about them a little more freely than the previous regime

I finally was able to take the time to listen to it early this morning, and I'm glad I did. You can't help but like Pry and the way he comes across to the public. I also think the TSL guys did a good job with the interview.
It's nice to feel this optimistic again about the direction of the football program...

I am actually OK with just being so-so and the occasional breakout year with a coach like this. I know he's going to do what he says and mentor some kids into adults. We haven't had that in a bit.

I thought it was a pretty good interview to get a glimpse into the new coaching staff. It sounds like he wants to get the fundamentals right for the spring. The efficiency he was referring to might have been directed towards the coaches

yeah, maybe he should aim to an achievable level, like special teams and defense. Then maybe think about having offensive football in Blacksburg. It might be a bridge to far to expect a miracle to start.

Hey I'm choosing to be optimistic here. Love what I'm hearing from Pry, and really like the staff he has assembled.
Given what I've seen happen elsewhere, if the entire coaching staff is aligned to his vision, and they can get the players to buy in, then this thing is going to pick up speed, quickly.

Strong Agree on the need to limit transfer portal window. It shouldn't be close to year round
I hate hearing that someone wants a 'multiple' offense. I feel like every 'multiple' college football offense lacks an identity. But, I was happy to hear that he wants to design the scheme around the players' strengths, and his later comments about not starting off with a huge playbook.
I like the #25 jersey tradition continuing

Saying you want your offense to be "multiple" means nothing anymore. It's the one thing I'm bummed about when Pry answers questions about his vision. We have no insight into what the offense will actually look like and it makes me a bit worried.

Score early. Let the defense do it's job. Hold the ball when in the lead, and burn out clock. This is old school Beamerball. Think 04 Bryan Randall offense. Except now, we'll see more spread tendencies, and quick hitting drives.

Yea, I hear ya. For what it's worth, it sounds like Pry and Bowen are working together to design an offense based on what we have now. I'm interested to see what that looks like.

Hopefully it works out! I've been encouraged looking into Bowen, Glenn, and Rudolph and thinking of what this offense could be. But I'm also going to be concerned with a defensive coach saying platitudes about being "multiple" and "difficult to defend" with hearing little more than being physically imposing and using TEs. It's just not much to go on and I'm worried he could become one of those annoyingly conservative defensive coaches who just wants his offense to run the ball with 2 TEs.
Again, I have no idea! It's just the one area that I'm worried about!

I read into his comment as we're going to be a college offense. Most of the good teams seem to be a mishmash of concepts. Everyone is doing read options and RPOs and have air raid concepts. I would be more concerned if he said we'd be power run or pro. I don't want a gimmicky offense. I dont want a 90s offense.

I've really enjoyed all the interviews/pressers I've seen from CBP so far. Even though there usually isn't a ton to glean from these kind of sit downs, it's nice to feel like you're getting to know your coach better. I've liked him more after each one of these things.
Lots of coach speak about focusing on toughness, determination, and physicality, but as a former DC as our new coach I really hope that's one of the things we see early returns on. S&C gains paired with toughness, want to, and physicality on both sides of the ball, but particularly on defense, is my number one expectation for year one.

I don't think its being posted anywhere on here but the videos they are pumping out from the spring drills look like they have way more intensity then I remember seeing from the past few years. I think I remember the first spring when Fuente was here thinking the guys looked like they were all going through it but then after year 2 or so that didn't seem to be as present. Hope they keep this intensity up

This is true of almost every new head coach. The first practices "are tougher than anything from the previous staff". I think I remember reading that Willie Taggert was tougher than Jimbo Fisher at FSU...
Not to say Brent Pry hasn't said and done all the right things, but Fuente's program had a similar vibe when we first started too

I remember lots of comments that the amount of running was way different under Fu. We seemed to have good endurance, but our size, strength, and overall physicality dropped off significantly.

It helped Fuente to have a solid core of veterans to start his first season. Season 2 could easily have fallen off the rails without guys like Cam Phillips and Motu.
Pry doesn't have that luxury. Lots of young raw talent that will need to be molded.

Not sure I buy that. I can't even remember how many times I saw guys that looked gassed after running 40 yards or so. On a breakaway play with 80 yards to go and an empty field in front of you, if you're faster than the other guys but are winded after that many yards, you're likely gonna get caught - and I seem to remember it happening a decent amount under Fuente. I NEVER saw crap like that under Beamer.

The guy clearly has a focus on recruiting and developing relationships. Far cry from Fuente and what a breath of fresh air. This gives him a really strong head start.

Not really doing the rounds until he does a TKP AMA.
He's saving the best for last.
Man, I cannot wait for the spring game now.

I want to add in how he says they will adapt based on personnel and strengths. That is refreshing from the last staff.
It's sad that so many people don't do this. This should be "Managing People 101"

Thank you to mods for embedding the video. I forgot you could do that

Really Thankful Coach Pry is continuing to engage with the fans and community.
Based on everything I have seen, he has a consistent message in regards to his plan to get VT where we all want it.
He is genuine in his approach and I am excited and hopeful that he will succeed.
I wish Pry all of the luck with that because he is going to have to break a lot of bad habits this winter and spring.

What, we've been having "offensive football in Blacksburg" for years now! Just not the way we wanted it :-).

I can't wait to see the product on the field!

Every presser or interview with CBP has me
Immediate thoughts:

Offensive efficiency.

Fwiw, this isn't really 'offensive efficiency' - offensive efficiency is typically measured in points per play or points per drive.

Honestly I don't care at all what our offense looks like if it puts up a lot of points on the board (even against tough competition). Just sayin.

Feels like we said the same thing after Fuente had everyone running wind sprints during his first year here.

David Wilson was caught from behind because he was gassed on the play he ran like 76 yards for a 12 yard gain. But outliers do exist.
they're keeping the 25 jersey tradition, I think that might be the best holdover from the Fuente era lol
