Thread for all things ACC Basketball Tournament. Day 1 happened with nothing shocking. Things get a little more fun today with 4 games slated.
March 11 update: H O K I E S keep it rolling with another win while Duke needed some late game surge to get past the Orange. Miami needed OT to beat BC, and the only team that seemed to have an easy night was UNC who slapped around UVA in the first half and never made it closer than an 18 point game. Grab some coffee because the Hokies tip-off around 9:30 tonight and hopefully all those late games we complained about this season were just conditioning for this one!

I'm so happy to see FSU have a bad season. After watching them shoot the lights out every time they played VT, it was nice to be their second loss in a long tilt.

Buddy beohiem suspended 1 game for his punch out so he will miss the duke game. A costly mistake that he's incredibly lucky the refs missed it .

But they may not have. It happened in the first half. If they call the flagrant and eject him, they get foul shots, then ball and momentum (plus the loss of BB points, assists and such the rest of the game).

It's extremely frustrating that we find ways to stay in games yet look so embarrassing in doing so. Of course, in recent memory, whenever we've had an all around complete game, it's when it doesn't mean anything. Being a VT fan means being on the liver transplant list.

Surprisingly, we are 1.5 pt favorites against #2 seed ND
the line keeps moving. It was even very early this morning, now -1 in VT's favor. What's clear is that Vegas expects this to be a very close game.
Not too surprising. Since before the tournament VT has been either the 3rd or 4th favorite to win the ACC tournament depending on the bookie/stats (538/KPom).
Computers love VT and VT running the table at the end of the season made that even moreso.
Really need that game to be a learning experience and not a "I'm just glad we won!" game. That cannot happen. You cannot shoot that poorly from the foul line. You cannot eat the timeout on the last possession there when 5'10" Storm gets in a bad spot. You cannot settle for threes. You cannot leave Catoor in there cold when you have a walking bucket in Maddox sitting on the bench.
I'm happy to get the win. Depending on where we end up in the postseason, Maddox's shot could be one of the biggest in Hokie history which is very cool to witness. Learning experiences are not exclusive to losses, though.
I don't know if I would characterize 2-6 as "cold". It is certainly below his average. I think Catoor wasn't getting open enough to either get the ball or shoot the ball. Clemson seem to focus on taking him away after he hit the two 3's in the first half. I don't know if Maddox would have been more effective getting open to get good looks or not.
Maddox only played 6 less minutes that Catoor (and took the same number of shots). Not sure I'd characterize 3-6 shooting as a "walking bucket", but he is currently at the top of the list of players I want to take the shot with the game on the line (Captain Obvious here).
Cattoor went 0-4 from the three-point line and 0-3 from the foul line in the second half and OT. My Maddox comment was more related to the second half than the game as a whole.
Once Hunter missed all 3 fouls shots I would have sat him the rest of the way at least until the start of OT, and honestly think sitting him could be beneficial. Have him come in first off the bench, but I think he clearly needs a mental reset.
The only problem with that is does the drop off between Catoor's defense and Maddox's defense lead to another Clemson bucket (which would cost us the game). I don't think Catoor took another shot after the missed FTs (but I could be wrong). In spite of the fact that it doesn't show up on the stat sheet, he does contribute in other ways.
The 3 missed FTs were egregious (but the team except N'Guessan and Pedula shot poorly from the FT line.)

With Buddy, Syracuse might have actually won. ESPN ran a story from the guy that got gut slapped. He said he had been blocking out Buddy hard and it was a basketball play. He said that Buddy should not have been suspended.

Their offense has sucked most of Bennetts tenure. He needed 3 NBA players on the team to score 70 points consistently.
Truly remarkable that he has just refused to coach an offense his entire tenure. And only once did he bother recruiting shot makers.
If it wasn't for their fluky title run (bad calls, lucky wins, etc.), he would be looked at in a different light
The offense is very simple and requires shot makers, one very athletic SF who can bully or blow by his defender, and a couple of lead footed big dudes to screen for the other 3. But, when your defense is that good it really improves the team's floor. They got all the timing and personnel exactly right a few years ago to make a run. We'll see if Bennett has that in him again or if they'll just maintain that high floor because of the incredibly boring style of basketball.
It's frustrating that such a painful style will always lead them to be competitive, but I can't really fault them for going with something that works at this level.
I would much rather have the second best defense in the ACC and a high flying exciting offense. Go CMY.

Toward the end of our game, ESPN cut away to show the UVA players in the tunnel. My 8yo, who had no idea who those players were or why they were showing them, immediately read their facial expressions and said "why are they scared"?
I said "what do you mean?" He asked, "are they in Ukraine?"
Certainly, no one can argue that UVA didn't come out and play tense like the moment was too big for them. Hopefully we come out, play loose, knock down open shots, and have fun. An aggressive Hokies unit who is finding the basket is hard to beat.

CONSPIRACY ALERT: I have to think ESPN, the ACC, and all the other powers that be are rooting very hard for a UNC vs Duke ACC Championship, especially in Coach K's last year. Given the heightened coverage around their last matchup and the fact that Duke lost, the story writes itself. Look for the refs to feel the invisible pressure to please the higher ups.
HOWEVER: If I am UNC, I would rather lose to VT than give Coach K another chance to go out on top. I grew up a UNC fan and the hatred I had for that man is worth way more than an ACC Tourney Championship (that they would probably lose). As it stands right now, Coach K has to live with the fact that he lost his last game against UNC, at home. And that will bring better memories to UNC fans over the years than winning a ACC Tourney.

You are unfortunately right. UNC is about 4 inches taller across the board than our team as well. They did a good job fielding 2 7 footers against us in Cassell.
Maybe young can hit the portal for a 6'10 Oklahoma transfer that averaged 6ppg, but is a better 3 point shooter than Reggie Miller. It would be cool if we could land a stiff like Manek and he lights it up after he gets to VT.

Corey Alexander was biting his tongue about how bad that call on Cattoor was. They showed the replay and it was such an obviously bad call they transitioned very quickly to something else. Avoiding replays on controversial calls must be in the ACC contract with ESPN, its so rare it has to be deliberate.
I think they mentioned something like, "Not a lot there." Or something to that effect. It was pissing me off while we pissed the game away, but I don't think the causal, non-VT fan wants to see 6 replays of a blown call.
I'm sure ESPN would love the ratings. What I would love more is for Miami to spring an upset so that the league/refs know from the tipoff of our 9:30 that a UNC/Duke matchup isn't possible, and call a clean game.

I'm sure the refs will not be on our side tonight. We always get hosed vs. UNC anyway. Not even just us. Louisville had a game stolen from them against UNC a month or so ago. The refs let Bacot do whatever he wants without calling him for fouls.
And I'm sure the same will be true for Miami against Duke
My fear between Bacot going off with Manik balling out and TV teddy or Roger Ayers getting showboaty are about 50/50. I hope the refs dont decide it and with Bacot in particular giving our interior so much fits we had better shoot the 3 ball really really well.
