To the Greatest Thing to Ever Happen in Sports
I remember watching and calling every person I knew (within reason) to get them to turn their TVs on.

I woke up my wife and son to tell them!!!
One of my favorite sports memories that doesn't involve my team. Not just any 1 seed, but THE number one overall seed going down to a school that most of the country (outside of lacrosse fans) have never heard of.
It was the most glorious thing I have ever seen up to that point
I'm not 100% sure if this is true, but a UMBC grad told me the ONLY non-academic scholarships they offer are for chess players. And with that, they are one of the top schools for chess.
I'd be happy for any confirmation of this.
Edit: I got confirmation that I was quite wrong....
Its not but if they do offer chess scholies that's funny. UMBC is nasty at lax so not offering any athletic scholarship doesn't make any sense.
I was in Whistler BC with two UMBC graduates and it took a while to get the game on but we did by the half. The locals thought we were hosers for not watching hockey but man my buddies went apeshit in the second half. They were already big drinkers but man oh man....that was epic. I'll never forget that night so fun.
It wasn't just that UVa lost that game, it was that it was never really close. They got stomped that night, run out of the arena.
"Oh dear..."
Oh yes Karen, we are most definitely going to remember this for years to come
"Oh no. We're gonna be ...
THAT TEAM"
Quite a bounce back the next season as much as it pains me to admit it
She has such pretty blue eyes.....I wonder why she abuses them by watching LOLUVA sports?
I remember being out at some public gathering and coming home to check scores. I IMMEDIATELY turned to TNT and laughed my ass off for the last 6 minutes of the game. Karmas a bitch.
This is amusing...but they won the natty the next year. This is an all time kind of fail, but would any of us have the Hokies suffer this type of loss if it meant us winning a National Championship in the short term?
They will always be a historical footnote.
I've thought about this before and to me, I think about how the average person probably can't name the national champion from 2, 3, 5, etc., years ago. There's one every year and to most fans, it's not their team so it doesn't stick in the memory so much.
But any person with passing knowledge of college basketball knows that UVA is the only 1 seed to lose to a 16 seed. I'm sure the title helps the Wahoo's sleep at night, but I'd guess more people remember the loss than the title.
Exactly. UVa losing like that transcended sports. It was the ultimate upset. 5 years from now nobody cares they won the title, but everyone remembers UMBC. Hell, we are probably already at that stage to be honest
I mean, I don't know about y'all, but I had forgotten about UVA's title by the next morning.
I'm putting $10 on all the 16 seeds this year via the money line-you never know!
Your point about them being the first and only 1 seed to lose to a 16 is what sways me to say I'd rather not have that bad loss. UVa is still VERY singular in that distinction.
Until it happens again, they'll forget be known as having the worst loss in all of sports.
This has always been my take, I dont know who won last year. I just don't remember that stuff like I used to (I have other things to care about) But the only team to ever lose to a 16 in mbb is a trivia question for the next 50+ years
I don't care. Why on earth would we ever let this go?
What a week:
Monday: Pi Day
Tuesday: ides of March
Wednesday: this
Thursday: St Padraigs Day
Friday-Sunday: recovery
Correction to this...
Friday: Texas
Saturday: recovery
Sunday: Purdue/Yale
This has been such a long week. I hate when we have the Friday game and not the Thursday. Let me blow out of work and drink all day watching my school, already. On a Friday at 430, its just normal.
I couldn't help myself from giggling like Kevin every time that UMBC drained a shot.
I remember the guard just threw the ball up after getting fouled at half-court as he was falling off balance.
Drained it.
The best part about this is at the start of EVERY NCAA tournament from here to the end of time, the media people will talk about this loss. Trivial Pursuit will make a trivia card about this. This will be a question at trivia nights in bars. This loss is now a part of pop culture. Yes, LOLUVA did win the championship the next year but that isn't what people talk about here. One team will win the championship every year. It is that UVA was the first 1 seed to ever lose to a 16 seed. Nobody has done it before or since.
It's going to live on as much as the Flutie vs Miami toss, going to be a drinking game
yep - I thought that a mid major 1 seed would lose first- a Gonzaga or Whichita state or A 10 team, etc. The fact that it was UVA was hilarious
And they got killed. It wasn't even close. I don't know when it would happen again, but it really would have to be a team that has a terrible offense. Any 1 seed with at least a competent offense should be able to eventually score enough.
So UVA the next time they have a core of highly rated recruits?
The day UMBC became a man - I mean a 1 seed.
