I'm really worried about this new ball they're using for the tournament. It's very bouncy and we tend to fumble the ball a little bit while Texas is really good at takeaways. My butthole is very tight.

Total number of fouls has been even but 4 of the fouls called on us were complete horseshit. The one on aluma getting pulled to the ground was just ridiculous. And that turned into a 5 point swing.

We're much more focused on killing any chance for Texas to get an easy transition basket. If we can close out our defensive boards better, then I think this is fine. Their offense is not traditionally efficient. Of course Jones drilled another 3 as I type this. We gotta adjust to him. Otherwise, don't give them easy baskets and get back on defense.

There is too much length to settle for 2s in this game. We gotta start making this team close out above the arc. That opens up lanes for quick passes off the baseline and good ball movement to make higher percentage opportunities. Was slightly encouraged only being down 2 at Half...after giving up tons of Offensive Rebounds, TOs and a below average 3 pt shooter magically shooting the lights out.
Unfortunately the 2nd half has been much the same. They have gotten us completely out of our Offensive game, have Aluma complaining to the Refs after every other possession. Need a minor miracle at this point.

Their coach is another level. Complerley naturalized our offense. No fluke that this dude went from Little Rock to the championship game in 3 years. Nothing against Mike, he's the best that VT will be able to do. But Beard is at least one of the very best in the country.
Their athletes are another level. We don't recruit enough high level athletes to win tournament games.
Their focus is another level. We make dumb plays, they don't. They play like champs, we don't.

I still will never really enjoy basketball in general, but this was a really fun team to watch win the ACC. Losing a random tournament game against a random Texas team doesn't spoil that at all. We will remember the ACC championship and forget this game.

These turnovers and everything else, man... Sloppy. This team is playing sloppy and they look extremely overwhelmed, defeated, and exhausted. Mix that with badhorrific officiating and you've got this disaster.
Again, this doesn't take away the amazing stuff this team has done this season. By saying earlier that this team plays better when they're doubted, I meant it. But I'm also one of those people that hates when we're picked on College Gameday on Saturday mornings. It's hard to come off a win like that. Winning the ACC was huge for the program and I'm very proud to be a Hokie! Mike Young has the program in the right direction, the future is bright. Just wish today wouldn't have ended this season's run so quickly.

The lack of a guy who can slash and finish at the Rim has been a glaring problem all year.
We have overcome it by spreading the floor and shooting 3's. When they are dropping, it works. When they're not, we look anemic and disorganized on offense.
TX clearly made a plan to take the 3 pointers away and we never developed any way to counter.

Their coach basically neutralized our offense and we either couldn't adapt or draw up an answer. It helps when them seem to be hitting everything in sight.

Great season to what seemed to be a lost cause. Agree with above statement that this is really a G-5 roster, and it is. That was all the talk of how CMY won the ACC with those guys. Ah well. Proud of them. First time we've ever won the ACC. No one thought we were making a run at the championship. CMY has us going in the right direction.

Yeah definitely agree with that. But they also just didn't miss as soon as they got that small lead at the beginning of the half. We needed to answer on offense and got intimidated by their high contact (some would say fouling) defense.
Another factor is in MY's slow offense, getting down 10+ with less than 8 to go is insurmountable without a change in pace. Pedulla has great instincts, especially late in games. He will drive and get fouled without wasting any time. Cattoor is the only other guy on the team who will do that. I'm excited to finally have a point guard with his instincts but nervous that MY hasn't instilled that in ANY of his other players

Thought we should have worked inside out to open 3s more. Seemed we never passed out of the paint but we needed 3s and rarely shot them.
Also thought Texas looked very uncomfortable with our full court press, would have liked to see them switch into that from 5 minutes left because they were hitting everything anyways at least we could try and snag some turnovers

They were hot. We were not. The foul count seemed reasonable, so refs didn't determine the outcome. Our boys suffered from fatigue. Think about their schedule. It's understandable IMO. They were a tired boxer with their arms down and jaw open.

It looked a lot more like the 10-10 Hokies than the February-March Hokies tonight. But give the horn dogs credit - they played to what the refs would allow physically, hit their open shots, and protected the ball. It was the game I was afraid of - we were still spent from the ACC Tournament, which was our pinnacle.. I am still happy for our guys, and am encouraged for next season.

I love CMY, but our roster is a G-5 roster plain and simple. We had an amazing run last week, but these aren't the same type of athletes.

We have overcome it by spreading the floor and shooting 3's. When they are dropping, it works. When they're not, we look anemic and disorganized on offense.
TX clearly made a plan to take the 3 pointers away and we never developed any way to counter.

Their coach basically neutralized our offense and we either couldn't adapt or draw up an answer. It helps when them seem to be hitting everything in sight.
Without the three ball, this Hokie team is unfortunately very pedestrian, and we don't have enough difference makers to overcome it.

Great season to what seemed to be a lost cause. Agree with above statement that this is really a G-5 roster, and it is. That was all the talk of how CMY won the ACC with those guys. Ah well. Proud of them. First time we've ever won the ACC. No one thought we were making a run at the championship. CMY has us going in the right direction.

Yeah I'm glad they ended up giving him the flagrant. That was completely uncalled for. He definitely thrives in the Texas defense that is all about being chippy and sometimes outright mugging the opponent. Also someone please explain how we had more fouls than them

Hope if they face this situation again in another tournament, Mike Young has them play with that urgency a bit earlier.
Felt like we were just trying to wait out Texas' hot shooting instead of making them uncomfortable until those last few minutes.
Really proud of this team and glad they fought back to avoid a blowout, but the ending could've been even closer if they played like that earlier.
Yeah definitely agree with that. But they also just didn't miss as soon as they got that small lead at the beginning of the half. We needed to answer on offense and got intimidated by their high contact (some would say fouling) defense.
Another factor is in MY's slow offense, getting down 10+ with less than 8 to go is insurmountable without a change in pace. Pedulla has great instincts, especially late in games. He will drive and get fouled without wasting any time. Cattoor is the only other guy on the team who will do that. I'm excited to finally have a point guard with his instincts but nervous that MY hasn't instilled that in ANY of his other players
Thought we should have worked inside out to open 3s more. Seemed we never passed out of the paint but we needed 3s and rarely shot them.
Also thought Texas looked very uncomfortable with our full court press, would have liked to see them switch into that from 5 minutes left because they were hitting everything anyways at least we could try and snag some turnovers

Well that didnt go the way that i had hoped. Thank you to the team for playin hard and for a few magical nights in Brooklyn after not quitting on the season. It was a joy to be there for the clemson game. Best of luck in your future endeavors to those that will be moving on.
They were hot. We were not. The foul count seemed reasonable, so refs didn't determine the outcome. Our boys suffered from fatigue. Think about their schedule. It's understandable IMO. They were a tired boxer with their arms down and jaw open.
It looked a lot more like the 10-10 Hokies than the February-March Hokies tonight. But give the horn dogs credit - they played to what the refs would allow physically, hit their open shots, and protected the ball. It was the game I was afraid of - we were still spent from the ACC Tournament, which was our pinnacle.. I am still happy for our guys, and am encouraged for next season.
