Matej commented on some good news coming on the Boundary Corner Podcast. I wonder if this is it.

A name to keep an eye on now would be Tyrell Ward (6'7 SF from DeMatha Catholic), basketball recruit committed to Xavier. With Xavier parting ways with their head coach, it's a possibility we could flip him to VT.

That would be a huge pickup, but I wonder if we still have space with the Buchanan commitment.

May we all get what we want and never what we deserve.

We got plenty

Can we flip him for '22 if he already signed an LOI with X?

I believe the NCAA lets a player not yet enrolled switch commitments if the coach they committed to is no longer there.

Sometimes we live no particular way but our own

Haynes is entering the transfer portal. The numbers always work out.

I have tempered my expectations for this recruiting class. Between it being a (seemingly) weak year in-state and the head start our competition has on us in terms of relationships working on this specific class, we are unlikely to see a very highly rated class. That doesn't mean we won't get a lot of important/key recruits that fit team needs and style moving forward.

I personally dont think this will be a good year to "grade" the coaches' recruiting ability for the exact reasons you stated. I do however think that the staff will put on a show for this weekend as it seems they will be hosting a pile of recruits Friday-Sunday.

We're getting his last visit too; his OV is going to be on our Spring Game weekend

Sam Pendleton is a Michigan / NC State race. Wouldn't be surprised if a commitment happens in a few weeks

What happened to lil ole CLEMPsin??

Honestly, don't know. I suspect it was the change in OL coach that eliminated them

That interview was......windy.

What kind of Matrixy shit is going on in the background?

You will see this game, this upset and this sign next on ESPN Sportscenter. Virginia Tech 31 Miami 7

His decision was made after a phone call with longtime Virginia Tech assistant coach Bud Foster. All Foster told him was, "We win. They don't."

Is that Ronnie Bass's kid?

Man I hope so. That would be some great feet for an OT

Should round up to 6-9. You know, just to be niiiiccccceeeeee.

Tyrell ward reopens recruitment from Xavier 👀

Do we have room? If so, do we still have interest or target the transfer market?

"Give me a fu¢king beer", Anonymous Genius

We would 100% make room for this man, top 30 recruit I believe

From this tweet from David Cunningham, it would seem we only have room if Aluma and Mutts don't come back. We also don't have room for both to come back without getting creative.

Gotta imagine they'd be creative about the #s to get Ward, even if it meant encouraging a couple of rising upperclassmen who have sparingly played to go elsewhere. The downside is that you have a lot of scholarships tied up in one class. The upside is obviously that in 3 years, we should have a championship caliber team.

Ward's skill set is also a missing piece that we will lose when Mutts is gone, although we can't expect him to replace Mutts' productivity in Yr 1.

I can see an upper-classman who has played significantly, but with ever reducing production leaving as well.

I think no roster churn would be shocking, so I'm not putting much stake in scholarship #s yet. I don't think Mutts/Aluma will get 3-4 months to decide, we got burned by waiting out Radford until august last summer.

Allyene has 2 full years left - I sort of would be shocked if he transferred, but might see a benefit to doing so to a different P5/good mid major school. He saw his minutes decrease during the season, and I would expect Maddox to push for more time next season. Unless both of those guys are cool playing 20 minutes a game for another year (and then both could be back for another year), I could see that being an extra roster spot.

Time will tell!

Now finish up them taters; I'm gonna go fondle my sweaters.

Dammit David don't jinx it

Oh yes please! That would put the pain of the NCAA tournament have in the rear view pretty fast!

Plan for the worst and hope for the best, not the other way around.

There were a ton of recruits at Tech on Saturday for football. My son got one of the student intern spots and he was working Saturday from 8 am to 6 pm.

I bet he had a blast!

Good for that kid. He gets paid and it hurts nobody

There will be a few comments about his last name when he enters the portal in a couple of years.

I mean the guy is who he is, can change a man's destiny.

Auburn Engineering School ain't all it was cracked up to be. Back on the DD bandwagon. He's got the goods.

hmm I wonder if that is a shot at Auburn's coach. Kinda sounds like it lol

With this move, there's two spots open on the roster right now. And there's been speculative talk there might be one more transfer coming to make 3 open spots.

(BTW, are we doing all recruiting/transfer news in this one thread or separate threads for basketball/football?)

Yes same thread, all the good news right here!

Edit: nevermind. Corrected itself.

Can a player ever be "forced out" due to place on the depth chart? I know Coach Pry is expecting a bit of attrition, and I believe we are over the limit on scholarships with the incoming freshmen. I'm sure he can sit down with an individual and say, "Son, you are currently listed as the 10th running back, and we think it's best that you explore other options." That player has no obligation to leave if he loves the school and still believes he can stick it out and try to be the starter, nor can his schollie be revoked without cause, right? Just curious. Especially with cases of a new regime, I can see that being a little tricky.

At one point scholarships were all year to year, and they could be revoked at the risk of alienating players, and having that impact future recruiting/team morale. Now that multi-year scholarships are allowed, I believe most 1-A schools grant 4-year scholarships, so the only thing you can really do is suggest they explore other options like you said.

Most 1-A schools do not grant 4 year as very few outside the power 5 do this. As of 2019 (latest I can find the data), very few power 5 schools do this too. They still like the 1 year scholarships. I would also assume they are used as leverage in recruiting battles as why would Bama ever give out a 4 year scholarship and limit themselves. So a competitor would offer 4 years to try to get a player Bama wants.

In 2015, the P5 and ND instituted a rule that 4 year scholarships cannot be canceled due to athletic reasons. Also you can only give multiple year scholarships to players than sign their NLI with the schools, so transfers cannot recieve multiple years.

So it really depends on what Fuente did when giving out scholarships.

So it really depends on what Fuente did when giving out scholarships.

So, whatever the wrong choice was, that is probably what he did

Now finish up them taters; I'm gonna go fondle my sweaters.

Just had a thought on this I can't find the answer too. If a player doesn't sign early and enrolls then they never sign an NLI which means they are yearly?

Beamer would tell the players to transfer. Ballein would help them with finding a new school. Some players would take that news, and play their way back into the 2 deep without a scholarship. Others transferred.

Awfully quiet on the tyrell ward recruitment front. Each day that passes makes me lose hope

Having hope was your first mistake. Expect nothing and you'll never be disappointed. Sometimes pleasantly surprised.

Imo hearing nothing is great for us. Means he hasn't picked anyone else either 😂

4 stars are cool, but can he run QB Power effectively? /s

At 6'-2" and 185, I just don't see how this kid ever makes it as a VT tight end.

Just found out this kid goes to our district high school just down the road from us.

Basketball news

Come play in the best basketball league in America. And play for the champs.

Hey atleast we arent LSU or will wade. LSU have now lost every single player to the portal or NBA draft. 11 in the portal and 2 in the draft. All recruits for the next two cycles have also decommited or been released from their nli. Talk about a rebuild there

Directions from Blacksburg to whoville, go north till you smell it then go east until you step in it

that's a very odd way to phrase that statement after VT had arguably the greatest season its had in basketball.

Yeah, and we were damn near there 3 years ago
