i liked the white one, but i hated the font for the numbers on both. i like orange, but i thought the orange sleeves were just too much on the maroon ones. i did prefer the matching neck to the contrasting neck we have now and had prior.
side note: did we really have those for 3 years!? i thought it was just 2...

All of those look great! I agree it's time for a change. The throwbacks have had their time.. Now they just look stale. New AD.. Now time for new unis. As long as they stick with one style

Turns out you're right. I found a couple of sites online that apparently are misquoting the rulebook. Most refer to a "single color," but the rulebook (which I found at http://www.dfoa.com/attachments/article/69/2013-14_Football_Rule_Book.pdf and am assuming to be legit since it is branded with the NCAA logo and dated for 2013-2014) actually states:
The jersey must have clearly visible, permanent Arabic numerals measuring at least 8 and 10 inches in height front and back, respectively, of a color that itself is clearly in distinct contrast with the color of the jersey, irrespective of any border around the number.

So does that mean the dark maroon numbers that some proposed for the (also proposed) black unis would be in violation? I wouldn't think that would be enough contrast IMO. But... I'm also colorblind, so I don't think my opinion should carry much weight there.

I would say so, which is probably why they went with orange numbers with the black jerseys against BSU. I don't think it was a rule back then, but for TV purposes they generally like to have colors that contrast so the announcers can tell players apart.

Babcock needs to take full control of the uniforms, no more "seniors choose them" unless the seniors have a very few choices. This is the biggest brand impact we have, we need to stop muddling it up.

I'm a charter member of the "you can pick any uniform you want as long it's all-maroon" club, but in truth anything without the hideous shoulder stripes gets my approval these days. Why we suddenly decided to copy UCLA/LSU/etc I'll never know, that look reminds me of the 70s-era Astros units, which were horrifically bad.

we weren't copying anyone (unless we were copying them 50 years ago)...we found these in a box, Nike added their swoosh and we wore them for 1 game:
here is Frank running in the old VT uni:
People liked the throwbacks when we wore them, so Nike gave us a modern version when it was time for a new design. not everyone loved them, but no one will ever design a VT jersey everyone loves. we'll have new jerseys in 2015, either designed by Nike under our new contract, or by our new partner. hell, if Nike thinks they might lose the business, i could see them giving us a new jersey this year just to sell as many new replicas as possible before they are done.

Fair enough. But something did change, I think starting with the 2008 season. For many years prior to that, at least as far back as my days as a student in the early-to-mid '90s, VT rarely wore uniforms with shoulder stripes. Anyway, my point was that I think they're terrible and I'm happy with any new design that eliminates them.

i never minded them, but i think if we took the best design elements from a few jerseys, we would be in good shape. Anyone care to draw this up for me?
solid maroon jersey (ala 1997-2002)
large solid white numbers front and back, no trim/outline (ala current jerseys)
solid orange numbers up on shoulders (ala 1995, can't find a pic)
VT logo at V of V-neckline
with small "HOKIES" in Orange under (Nike/VT font)
smaller version of:
but Small like:
Keep current solid maroon helmet, but go to matte finish
Solid white Pants as primary (no stripes), Solid Maroon pants as alternative, both with VT logo on hip and nothing else

I want. The Hokie stone. Numbers.
Gotta say, I do love the Hokie Stone.
I love the first two but the third looks too much like Miami's unis.
Someone it appears agrees with your ideas.

Thanks I've always thought hokie stone numbers were an obvious choice. I just want something more modern than what we have now
I actually like our traditional uniforms. I'd like to see our alternative modern uniforms as an alternate uniform 1-2 games a year.
Though on the other hand, that year we wore jerseys with one orange shoulder, those were pretty freakin' sweet.
Yess, the 2005 uniforms were the best. Those orange lightning bolt sleeves were sick and the orange sleeve made it look great
These were the best ones. 2007-2009.
elements of these were great, but overall...meh.

Just give me all maroon and I'll be satisfied
All of those look great! I agree it's time for a change. The throwbacks have had their time.. Now they just look stale. New AD.. Now time for new unis. As long as they stick with one style
I personally want a white jersey, a maroon jersey, both pants and helmet of both too. Then a one off every now and then
Always maroon helmet. Never not maroon helmet.
As much as I love the idea of Hokie stone numbers, I think NCAA regulations require a solid color now.
In reading the 2013 rules, that is clearly true, but it makes me wonder how we got away with the orange camo uniforms for the Marshall game.
I think the rule is more about contrast between the numbers and the jersey

Was there a Nike Pro-Combat uniform coloring book that everyone got for Christmas? Did I get left out?
Probably because I'm still on Team Throwback. Just add some damn stripes to the white pants and add maroon ones (also with stripes)

Still one of my favorite uniforms.
I like them.
I have always felt though we could be wearing maroon and orange tootoos and I wouldn't mind as long as we are winning.
