Thanks Andy. Once again very timely with the info and the discussion on the boards.

"All of my family is in Texas. All of my wife's family is in Texas," he said. "I've got a sister who is two years younger than I am and is battling cancer right now. My wife's family has some health issues as well. And our parents are getting to that age that you just want to be around them. And this will be the first time in a long time that I had the opportunity to be fairly close to my family. And that was a big part of it, to be honest with you."

Enough said.

That's what we had pegged as the probable.
Plus this. This is what we knew about CFB, he makes people care.

"It was hard to tell him," said Grimes, who emphasized he had the utmost respect for the long-time coach. "Its kind of like telling your dad something that you think your dad doesnt want you to do. You know what I mean? Thats kind of what I felt like calling coach Beamer. I felt bad."

This is going to be great for the ACC.

Didn't realize his sister has cancer. I applaud him for moving closer to his family, may all go well Coach Grimes.

In Sam Rogers we trust.

Motivation to be near family, especially when health and age are concerns, makes complete sense. Best wishes to Jeff Grimes and his family, and a big thanks from the Hokie Nation for his excellent work in his brief tenure.

"Exit light..."

Thanks Andy for closing the loop. Sometimes I feel like we never hear the other side of some of these coaching/recruiting stories. You do a great job of completing the story.

I told him I’d crawl on my hands and knees to be the DL coach at Virginia Tech. Now, all of a sudden, I’m sitting in this chair and I told him I’d still crawl on my hands and knees to work here. I just want to be here.

thanks Andy for a great article, I truly can not find fault with grimes after hearing why he chose to leave. Family is number 1

Sad to see him go, but perfectly understandable. Wish him well!

Our motto bringing spirit true, that we may ever serve you

And of course Andy's commenters underneath the blog miss the point once again.

-What we do is, if we need that extra push, you know what we do? -Put it up to fully dipped? -Fully dipped. Exactly. It's dork magic.

Not gonna lie, the night I found out he left I was more pissed off than a Volunteer fan with Lane Kiffin. But, after reading this I fully understand and wish him the very very best.

It's obvious that Grimes is a first class guy. We knew he was a heckuva coach....You can't help but feel good that we had him for a year. Just wish it had been much longer. It also makes you feel good about the head man....Beamer instills loyalty in his staff like nobody else. We best appreciate him while we have him.

Take the shortest route to the ball and arrive in bad humor.

Amen brother Hokie, CFB is a once in a generation HC. I have a feeling we will lament his retirement one day.

Great piece. Can't blame a man for wanting to be closer to family, especially w/ health issues. Wishing coach Grimey nothing but my gratitude for his time and for his future success. #beatbama
