it seems CFB has learned a lesson about using a schollie on a freshman kicker...

I don't have to take this abuse from you, I've got hundreds of people dying to abuse me.

How many kickers is that now in this class? And have we given any of them scholarships, or are we pretty much telling them that the winner will get one?

None of them have scholarship offers, I believe (Santamaria may have one, I'm not sure, but if he does, he's it).

Santamaria is a preferred walk-on, which means I don't know what that is. Perhaps that he could earn a scholly sooner than other walk-ons.

I'm pretty sure preferred walk ons are guaranteed a scholarship if they meet certain conditions. For kickers and punters, it's usually if they win the starting job at the beginning of the season. For other non ST players its probably different like a spot in the two deep.

Edit: While I'm pretty sure the above is how it works for the Hokies, especially with kickers and punters, a little more research points towards preferred walk ons having a guaranteed spot on the team, while a regular walk on has to try out.

I thought it was more like there's an "open" try out for the team prior to spring/fall practice. They are guaranteed a walk on spot that way.

I think....

In short, a preferred walk-on means that you will not have to try out on the 1st day of classes like the other "walk-ons". Preferred walk-ons are sometimes given a spot in pre-season camp, but that is based on the staff's discretion.

Go Hokies

Slye and Santamaria will battle it out. Always good to have more than 1 good kicker after that debacle last yr

This will be a key factor for next season. With a new quarterback, the important games will be close and probably come down to a few points. If we had a kicker this past season, maybe we would have finished unbeaten at home.

Jud Dunlevy 2.0

Help me out: there was a game in Dunlevy's career where he was defending a kick return and a return team member went for a high kill shot on him close to the end of the play. Dunlevy fell backward and threw/suplexed the guy ... AND GOT FLAGGED FOR A PERSONAL FOUL. One of the greatest penalties ever.

I would pay money to watch a Jud Dunlevy vs. Nic Schmidt bullring.

There isn't a ring big enough for that much awesome. Let's get a Kickstarter going.

We'd have to get Rogers to break them up.

Brooks Abbott would have chop blocked the piss out of both of them.

Five star get after it 100 percent Juice Key-Playing. MAN

Nothing made punting more fun than Nic Schmidt. Oh god that guy. I used to secretly hope that everyone would blow there coverages on punts so he would get to blow someone up.

I loved showing him to my friends that would visit from other schools. "See that guy? He's our punter." Bricks would be shat.

A decade on TKP and it's been time well spent.

I still do that.

I'm pretty sure it was against GT...I think the game that VT had to wear the GT unis

I'm glad so many kickers are gonna be there to compete but I just want one that can be reasonably dependable on and off the field. It seems so difficult to find one...

I love this. I'm optimistic that we'll have a definitive kicker coming out of the Spring. I think competition is a good thing. Of course i'd also like to have a kicking stud straight out of HS as well.

What is our class up to, like 47 commits? Going to have to start cutting OLs and QBs to make room for all these STs .

-What we do is, if we need that extra push, you know what we do? -Put it up to fully dipped? -Fully dipped. Exactly. It's dork magic.

We probably have enough TEs to make up the difference.

Non-scholarship offers/commits don't count.

I saw this kid kick against my old high school in the playoffs. Kid had one hell of a leg for a high schooler. Touched back nearly every kick off with ease. I even joked to my friends and said "hell, we should recruit this kid." I see the kicking game being much improved next year which is great because we can get back to kicking 4 field goals a game haha!

This is going to be great for the ACC.
