Sad to hear of Mark Lanegan's passing yesterday. Been a fan of his and Screaming Trees for a while - saw him in DC a few years ago as well.

I didn't find out about that until AFTER last night's show... I would have considered it... basic vinyl copies of any of their stuff is already insanely expensive.
I heard some people are buying them and then putting on Ebay and getting a couple thousand on them

It's been a rough couple years for musicians. Lanegan is definitely surprising... maybe because we don't often hear about him. Just hearing any update is a bit of a surprise. I get Nearly Lost You stuck in my head fairly often though. I've seen a lot of people talking about his work over the years. One I haven't seen mentioned much was an album with Isobel Campbell. It's kind of cool in a weird way. The two voices don't seem to work together, but in a weird way, they do.

Bought our Floydfest tickets and camping passes yesterday. Overly stoked to see Turnpike there.
Also, Rooster Walk is back on this year after canceling the last two years. Grace Potter and Little Feat headlining there. Should be awesome.
I've been thinking about getting Floydfest tickets. Might just go for single day Sunday tickets to see Turnpike
It will be interesting to see/hear Little Feat's new line-up, so please let me know how it goes. They're not coming anywhere near Boston in this tour.
I've been a huge fan since the early-mid 70's, and was actually at the Lisner Auditorium shows in August '77 while they did some recordings for 'Waiting for Columbus'. I last saw them in October 2019 with my oldest son; unfortunately, Paul Barrere had already taken ill for the last time right before the show and was not on stage. The band appeared to be in shock and kind of going through the motions. I still have 30 or so of their songs on my playlist.
Shaping up to be a good year. These are a few excellent rock & roll records I'm excited about, two recently released and two coming out soon.

Taylor Hawkins has died at the age of 50. Found dead in his hotel while on tour in Brazil.
Definitely a tragic loss. Really feel for Dave Grohl, now has lost two close band mates way too young. Foo Fighters are one of the last bastions of true good rock n roll.
This totally sucks. Love their music and have enjoyed his perspectives on a number specials on Netflix, etc. We have Times Like These on our current set list.

Somewhat off topic, but I'm in the process of trying to learn guitar. Jeez it's hard.
If you can stick with it, it is very rewarding. Are you learning on acoustic or electric? In either case, if you haven't already, get your guitar set up (even if you bought it new). Setting up the guitar can make it sound better (intonation) and make it more playable (action).
Also, don't be afraid to try lighter strings initially (they will replace them when the guitar is set up). They are easier to play, which will inspire confidence and help with progress.
Acoustic, and yeah I had it set up with extra light strings. I've learned to tune it and can play a few chords so far. It's a real challenge getting the fret hand position correct to avoid accidentally muting strings adjacent to the fretted ones. I try to practice 30 minutes a day. Probably not enough to make quick progress, but it's all I can spare at the moment. I'm just trying to get good enough to play a few songs around a campfire, no huge ambition. Something to do all winter lol.

I'd have to go look. It is second or third hand at least. It's probably junk, but I didn't want to invest much until I decided it was something I'm going to stick with. If I'm still playing in 6 months I might buy something a bit nicer.
When you say set up... did they adjust the neck at all? If not, give me some warning, I'll bring tools to town. We'll get together and I'll make some adjustments.

yeah, i tried when i was 33. woke up one saturday, no plans, decided to go buy an electric guitar, and sign up for some lessons. that guitar was the first music instrument i ever held, believe it or not. six months later, you could kind of figure out what i was playing, if you used your imagination LOL
tried again when i was 43. instructor this time was better, we really started from scratch. i made some progress with him. but it takes a LOT of practice time, and between work/kids/running/cycling...just not enough time, it was slow going.
i can play the first few chords of enter sandman pretty well, so that's something :-)

Thanks! It's fun and there's zero pressure to learn at any specific pace, so I just treat it as a mental break from the other shitshows in life. I'm ok with progress at a snails pace, just hope I continue to make time for it.
The new Stabbing Westward slipped under the radar on me - it does not disappoint, even more so when you consider they took an even longer break (20 years) than Tool did between EPs.
Going in blind, I went to go listen to the new "Foo Fighters" album in honor of Taylor Hawkins and I was *not* expecting a full-on heavy metal album. I had to triple check Spotify that I clicked on the correct album.

I accidentally discovered the band, "Eskimo Callboy" this year and if you haven't heard them, boy are you in for a treat. Definitely must watch the music videos while listening, especially for "Pump It" and "We Got the Moves".

I was looking at that as well. The new single is really good.
On a related note, if you're a Black Keys fan, check out the group Black Pistol Fire. Very similar sound to the Black Keys and also a two-man group. They've been making their way into a lot of my recent playlists.

I'm a History department alumnus who loves power metal so, of course I'm going to recommend Sabaton's War to End All Wars.
Also, as a metalhead, and loving the singles so far, Deceiver by Arch Enemy should also be a damn good album. Handshake with Hell is one of the three best metal songs so far this decade.
I thought my son was the only Sabaton fan in the US; guess not.

For the metalheads, the new Meshuggah album is pretty boss.
Also, the songs released so far from the upcoming Coheed and Cambria album are really good.

For any Black Keys fans, I would highly recommend the new Justin Golden record out of Richmond. Justin's a good friend of mine, typically does more of a traditional blues style but for this one he really channeled that gritty, garage blues sound.

Ka$cade is a great song. Tosin Abasi is up at the top with Tim Henson IMO when it comes to the prog metal guys who are just completely fucking nuts.

The new chili peppers album is fantastic not as good as their older stuff but its new and better than most stuff being spit out these days.
It is rock and roll- real guitar and drums. Rare today. It is also however very chill, IMO. Almost a disco vibe, and certainly not classic peppers
I'm a big dead head and jerry garcia nut and its like a more modern rockish mix with that vibe for some of the songs atleast. I really really like it. One day 102.1 in richmond will go back to playing actual rock music I hope.
I personally have not listened to it, but did read a review recently (linky) about the audio quality of the album and this is very likely their most (first) audiophile-grade album they have ever made. But, that ONLY applies to the vinyl copy. The CD version of the album still sounds better than most if not all of their other recordings, but the vinyl edition deserves a listen if you have the chance.

Went to Floydfest this past weekend. I'm nearly recovered. Saw two bands that I've been dying to see for the first time in Turnpike Troubadours and Trampled by Turtles. Only got to see about half of Turnpike due to a torrential downpour (finished Diamonds and Gasoline and Felker looked offstage and said "sorry folks...that's it." Sucked, but damn they're so back.) Also saw Old Crow for the first time and damn are they showman. Not my favorite, but they were so much fun.

She was on from like 6:45-8:45 Friday night and we didn't get our tent set up until about 9, so regrettably missed her.
OCMS was the last show I saw before covid shutdowns, Feb 2020 at the norva, and the first show I saw since, a few months ago in Manteo. They always put on a hell of a show.
Last time I was at floydfest was 9 years ago, pretty sure trampled by turtles was there, and killed it
