I just realized, my cobia report was for June 1st, so we need a new thread. I went back to Buckroe on Friday (June 3) to try again. This time I got there earlier (around 3:45AM.) While trying to sibiki up bait, spanish were thick and decimated several of my sibiki rigs. I did manage to land a handful of 16-18 inch class spanish and give them to another angler.
The cobia were there, but I had the stink on me. I ran eels and threadfin from 4:00AM-1:00PM. My threadfin kept dying on me and the eels drew no interest. Meanwhile, fish were caught all around me. Around 25 cobia were landed. Most were rats (under 30 inches) or shorts (30-39 inches), but five fish were caught that would have kept, with the two biggest being 53 and 49 inches long. I never even got a bump. The crowd, especially for a weekday, was miserable. Around 25 people fishing, but lots of folks running 2 rods (some 3.) Almost every fish hookup after 10AM turned into a big mess.
