As a Steelers fan this is the greatest news ever. He was signed today to a reserve/future contract. Basically that means he will be on the Steelers when the official league year starts. Can't wait to see him make the team as our new Hines Ward while simultaneously fixing our punting issues from last year!

COOL, DC belongs in NFL and as we ALL know it was a catch!
Fantastic news! Not a Steelers fan, but I'll root for Coale in any jersey.
Hey, now all we need to do is draft LT3 in the 3rd round and a couple years down the road we might see a replay of "The Catch" to win Super Bowl L, and hopefully this time the refs get it right...
YESSSSSSSSS So excited about this! He IS the next Hines Ward!
I'm not sure that was a catch.
As a Steelers fan...this made my day
Buying a jersey now
Coale in Pitt... that just sounds right.
almost..would make better sense if his last name was Steele or something
cant melt that steele without the coale
well played sir
I see what you did there.

I'm not a Steelers fan, but I am thrilled that Coale found another team.
glad he made another team
as for the team... at least its no longer dallas...
This, but just barely
Hopefully Danny makes a splash in Pittsburgh, I still think he has a chance to be a good pro. I'm still bummed at how his college career ended after such a freak effort
This makes me happy as a Steelers fan. One more Hokie the Redskins can't have.

I'll never understand the hatred non-rivals have for the Redskins...
I believe it has to do with the fact that (and I dont know if this applies outside of VA), we are forced to watch them play every weekend. Now that wouldn't be such a bad thing, except that they are terrible (not counting last season of course). When I was in high school, I loathed the skins because I was forced to miss many of my games that the rest of the nation got to see just because the skins were the regional team. That and skins fans have no idea how to be humble with a win
When winning only happens 3 times a year, it gets you pretty excited. Skins fans don't know how to be anything with a win.
As for being forced to watch...that happens everywhere. I get to watch Tennessee and Atlanta every weekend and I don't hate them for it.
I hear ya. I've noticed my hatred of the skins has all but dissipated since I now have several options at my disposal to watch the games I want. The internet is a wonderful place. Now I don't hate them. Just pity them and their fans
DirecTV
You pay for it! Haha
I've actually started to become a fan of NFL Redzone. I was skeptical at first, but it's not bad. And also pretty entertaining during crazy games like the Ravens-Vikings game this year (something like 5 touchdowns in two minutes).
redzone is where its at
I grew up in a Redskins area. It was really obnoxious listening to the most unrealistic fan base I have ever encountered talking about how Deion Sanders and Jeff George were gonna lead the team to the Super Bowl. Then it was about how Joe Gibbs was awesome (I liked him as a person, but his time had clearly passed). Then it was Albert Haynesworth. Then Shanahan (he was never that good of a coach without Elway, a monkey knew that) and McNabb. Then RG3. This is a fan base that complains about how Dan Snyder handles personnel decisions, but then enables him by getting overly excited every time anything in free agency happens.
You just about covered it.
Champs of the preseason.
Ehh...overreacting is pretty common to all football teams. For example, TKP after a loss. Redskins fans just overreact to the preseason because there's nothing positive that comes during the season.
I don't know, maybe this is just me as a Redskins fan, but it seems like there's just a whole lot of hate for the fans for not a lot of reasons.
Okay, so what I'm learning here is as a Redskins fan I should do the following:
- Not be excited when they win
- Not read anything in the newspaper about the team
- Not watch anything on tv about the team
- Not get excited about future players
- Be mad about every free agent acquisition that the team makes
- Move out of the DMV so I no longer can watch them as the local team
Then I will be liked?
People don't like you not because you're a Redskins fan, but because no one likes anyone. If you stop being a Redskins fan they'll hate you for your favorite soda instead.
I don't drink soda.
I AM THE MOST UNLIKED PERSON EVER.
If you stop being a Redskins fan, they'll probably hate you for quitting on your team.
No, you can do all of that. It's part of being a fan. But Redskins fans are unrealistic. When the Steelers were 0-4 I wasn't screaming to fire Tomlin, Redskins fans in that situation would have been. When we got to 5-6 (tied for the 6 seed) I wasn't screaming about how great we are. I knew we just weren't a very good team. It's the unrealistic goals every time anything of relevance happens.
By that logic all Virginia Tech fans are dumb rednecks, all Cowboys fans have never been to Dallas and all UVA fans hate the taste of beer. Well, maybe the last one is actually right.
Maybe you weren't saying Tomlin should be fired but maybe some other fans were. What if I happened to be friends with the Steelers fans that were? Would it be fair for me to hate the Steelers because of those 5 fans that wanted to fire Tomlin? That's the same logic you are using.
I'm a 25 year old Redskins fan. I have been alive for exactly 7 playoff appearances. I am going to be happy when my team does well. There are so many passive sports fans these days that you only hear from when something good happens. In the age of social media it gets compounded.
Oh, and fuck Dan Snyder.
I'm not basing that on a couple Redskins fans. I'm basing that on the Redskins fans I've grown up with. On the radio people who say the exact same kind of stuff every year on my drive home.
I love Dan Snyder, he's hilariously stupid when you're not a Redskins fan.
My dislike for the skins is actually because of the capitols. When the crosby-ovi rivalry was at its peak I would get so much shit for my sid jersey. I noticed many of the capitol fans would also have redskins stuff too so it became hating dc sports in general. And bryce harper only furthered my dislike of dc teams
Capitals.
Sorry, but that bothered me.
As far as your reasoning, I'm fine with it. There's a DC-Pittsburgh rivalry for hockey, and rivalries are great. I don't like the Penguins at all, even if they are far better than the Capitals right now.
My thought is just the random football fans that just go "Redskins fans are the worst fans ever, I hate them all," and they're like Dolphins fans or something. It just doesn't make sense to me.
I know mine arose from the ridiculous media coverage of them pretty much anywhere in the state. I grew up in Hampton, and EVERY SUNDAY AND MONDAY there was at least a full 2-page spread of nothing but Redskins coverage in the Daily Press, and probably one page for the rest of the league combined.
And now, even in Blacksburg, it's the same way, the only NFL team that the media focuses on is the Redskins. The problem is, now the Redskins are twice as far away from here as the closest team, the Panthers. Stop laughing, I'm trying to make a point.
The Panthers are easily day-trippable from Blacksburg, and I actually know some Panthers fans at Tech. Panthers tickets are also a lot more accessible to students (read: CHEAPER) than tickets to FedEx Field. I get that the Skins are probably the highest-represented team in the area, because of the students from NoVA and the 757, but I don't understand why the true "local" NFL team gets zero attention from the media.
The media simply does whatever they believe will get the most people reading their stuff. It has nothing to do with the fans other than just the number and distribution of fans.
It isn't just the NOVA and 757 people that like the Redskins or brought them to Bburg. A lot of the locals like the Skins, because the Panthers have only been around since the early 1990's ('93 I believe) and as you would imagine, a lot of people started following the NFL and determined a favorite team before the Panthers came around.
Ah, did not realize the Panthers were so young.
Even so, I still wish that in this day and age, where people tend to move around much more frequently, the media coverage wasn't so divided, especially so far away from the "home team". I mean, yes, in the DC area I would expect that 90% of NFL fans are Redskins fans. However, in the 757 and SWVA, there are a lot of fans of other teams.
Yes, but this is the case everywhere. For example, I live in Alabama and for some reason the only football the media talks about is Auburn and Alabama. I wish they'd talk about VT!
That's never going to happen. If the majority of an area is one teams fans, than the sports media will cover that team far and above any other. If they don't, they aren't doing their jobs correctly.
Prior to the late 60's, we used to watch the Baltimore Colts in the B-burg area and it was a great time to be a Colts fan. Then came Sonny Jurgensen and Billy Kilmer (should we have shot at some of those dying quail passes?) to usher in the Redskin's Sunday-afternoon dominance. It seemed everyone but me turned immediately a fan - traitors. Perhaps folks felt some kinship as DC was/still is closer.
The fans. And Dan Snyder
Growing up around here I was able to ignore all the Redskins-ness everywhere. Then I lived with a guy freshman year whose family had had Skins season tickets since the 1940s or something like that. He was one of the worst human beings I've ever met and he really turned me off to the Redskins as a whole.
Then again, I'm an Eagles fan. So every time they lost and he would get in my face yelling 'EAGLES SUCK' (no matter how the Skins did) it didn't do him any favors.
Also, I guess the non rival thing doesn't apply to me...
edit* People do love to hate the Eagles though, even more than the Redskins I'd say.
Idk... people don't really hate the Eagles, they hate Philadelphia fans. They have a reputation for being terrible, however well deserved that may be.
Unless they're fans of PETA, in which case they hate Michael Vick, and tangentially the Eagles for giving him employment. But that's different.
Every fanbase has bad apples. A lot of the things Philly fans have done over the years get swept up by the mainstream media and perpetuated. The booing Santa thing happened in 1968, for instance.
That being said, I'm probably the nicest Philly fan you'll meet.
I know not every Philly fan is terrible. I expect that the majority of them are actually nice people. That's the tone I was trying to go for with "however well deserved that may be."
I try not to hold a team's fan base against them when I place that team on the "love-hate" continuum. For the most part, I've been successful, with the primary exception being the SEC.
I gotcha. It's hard for me not to get a little defensive about my pro sports fandom, haha. Sorry if I came off that way
Haha, no worries. I can completely understand defending your chosen pro sports affiliations, and figured that was what you were getting at. I just wanted to explain that I wasn't trying to offend, merely pointing out the existence of a stereotype.
I've been a Steelers fan my entire life, but I'm partial to the Redskins because Lavar Arrington went to my high school (before I was there but I still thought it was cool)
At least he's not a Cowboy anymore.
Sweet! Hopefully he gets some legit playing time.
Great News. Danny deserves a chance. His injury at Dallas slowed him down, but he must have really worked hard to get back to where a team would want him. Love this news!!
I bet most of those non-fans lived in the DC area at one point . DC is a Skins' town and they don't know how to temper things. 1-0 , SuperBowl bound , 0-1 fire the coach. In the same town that the POTUS lives in , George Allen resigning knocked the SOTU to the 4th story on the 11 o'clock news (and this is in '78!). Coming from NY , my family was astounded on how much the Redskins own DC.
I'm happy for Danny Coale finding another team, but after reading this thread I would find it hilarious if he somehow winded up on the Redskins. I was hoping they would have drafted him but he got taken by the cowboys. I would thoroughly enjoy reading the thread comments. HTTR!!!!
