Thanks for the two of you who gave me my first downvotes. Why? Because I did not A&M? Sorry. I was seriously curious whether there was some reason a 90+ rated player from North Carolina had not attracted more interest.
It's a reasonable question, but you got downvoted because you posted the first comment to a positive post with a very negative vibe. Don't do that.
Neither you or I or Mike Young or all the other programs that did or didn't offer this player know for sure if he'll be an ACC-caliber player. But Mike Young just won the ACC title with a program that was in the garbage dump (3 returning players) when he was hired 3 years ago. So if he wants a guy on his team and that player accepts the offer, that's good enough for me.

This is expressly prohibited by the community guidelines. Also, his comment agruably was not even negative. As in, wow, this kids is a stud, how does he not have any other offers?

But that's not the point. There's guidelines, and there's common sense. Most people here wouldn't downvote that comment. But he asked why he got downvoted, and I explained it.
First sentence, second paragraph:
As a community, we encourage all thoughts on Virginia Tech athletics, whether they be supportive, critical, or otherwise.
We also can't downvote opinions. So, to the extent you interpreted it as "should we really be offering players with no other P5 offers?," that's also prohibited.
I'm not trying to be difficult. But we have to get away from this idea that nobody can say anything on TKP that can even remotely be construed as negative without being downvoted. That would result in nothing but rah-rah homerism, which the guidelines also prohibit.
Seems to me that recruiting aspects like this could be discussed in the general recruiting thread, instead of harshing everyone's buzz in the celebratory announcement. It's a legit question, but poorly placed in my opinion.
We could let the commitment threads be a celebration and welcoming on board, and do the hand-wringing and technical aspects of recruiting in the general recruiting thread. Then we can spend our time here congratulating Jaydon on his accomplishments, and wishing him well during his time as a Hokie. This is a thread where we can do that.
Everyone can make their own decisions, but this is something that maybe people could consider.

First of all, Vtkey is right. Let's first focus on the fact that we got another nice player to add to an already great roster. I love what Mike Young continues to do for Virginia Tech basketball.
As for the downvotes for the comment, I admire that you are defending the poster and his comment, this is a smart enough community that we can question and critique without having our love for VT doubted. FWIW, I think I was the first to upvote him, because he went from -2 to -1 at the time (he's now at like +9, which is cool). :)
That being said, it's not necessarily against the rules to downvote an opinion. I love opinions that I don't agree with because I'm a contrarian and I like to

He got downvoted because his comment didn't contribute anything positive to the post. As I posted above, also directly quoted from the CG:

He's not required to contribute anything "positive." He just has to start or contribute to the discussion, which he did.
Nowhere in the CGs is it said that one must have a positive outlook in their comments. In fact, comments that are contrary to the overwhelming opinion in here often spark the best subthreads in this community.
If you're downvoting because a comment isn't celebratory enough for your liking, that is very much downvoting an opinion. If someone is being a jackass with the way they are commenting, that is completely different, but don't downvote just because someone posts a fact or legitimate question that you don't like.
My view (whoch could be wrong) is that if the first comment on a recruits announcement post is negative and not downvoted then it is going to give a really bad first impression to the recruit who very likely will be looking at the fan response. If he sees the comment is downvoted it is a representation to the receuit that the negative comment is not speaking for the whole fanbase. In this case I think it was just a positive comment worded in a way that came across as a negative comment.
Except the first comment was actually a question, not a comment.
Rather than downvoting the question (which was perfectly valid as a question IMO), provide a positive answer...like "because Mike Young is again beating other programs to the punch..." or "he's an ideal fit in VT's scheme compared to other schemes" or whatever. There could be lots of answers to the question which are not negative.
He's the #6 player in North Carolina and a top 200 overall in the composite.....
I'll quit before I get any more down votes. But I still don't understand why his offer list isn't longer and stronger.

I'm not really concerned about a couple of down votes. I'll never have enough legs to matter. I was just surprised to get them for that comment. I didn't mean it to sound negative; I am very sorry it came out that way. Maybe I just don't understand bball recruiting. But I expected the competition for a high three star from the heart of ACC country to attract more attention. Never intended it to sound like I questioned CMY. He has clearly demonstrated he knows how to evaluate talent. Go HOKIES.

I understood. Sorry, should've added the /s after my initial comment above. I view NC HS basketball like FL HS football. Many kids can go under the radar early and can blow up later.
If he is the type of guy MY wants I guess we have to trust him and how he develops our players. I doubt we ever get to the level where we can steal blue blood recruits.
It's not uncommon for high-3* guys like Jaydon to not have many P5 offers. It mainly comes down to numbers. There are only 65 P5 schools, and Jaydon is currently rated #166 nationally. Most teams only have like 3 spots per year, but will send out 40+ offers, mostly targeting top-150 guys. If mid 3* guys are targeted, then they're usually geographically close to the school (example—VT offered like 15 3* or unranked guys, 10 of them are within VA/WVa/NC/MD).
So if you cut out 80% of P5 schools based on location, then drop out some big dawgs like Duke/UNC, then drop out teams who aren't looking for a 2023 guard or already got one....the number of offers gets small quickly.
MJ Collins ('22 recruit) only had one other P5 offer and an Xavier offer, and he was #182 nationally, as another example.
While your point stands, basketball really has the P6 because the Big East schools are well established power players. So slightly larger than 66, but not THAT much.
Agreed, which is why I pointed out Xavier in my original post. Definitely a P6 situation in basketball, but was just directly responding to OP's P5 question.

CMY's super power is finding guys who are trending up in terms of ability, skill and actually realizing their potential. Sometimes this will be a lower rated guy and sometimes not, but the ability to find guys who keep getting better is the key (think Boston Celtics vibes)

How do you know he had a rough summer? I feel like I've seen a "ranking tracker" on 247 or somewhere before that shows a recruit's rank over a period of time but can't find it now. Would love to have access to stuff like that again, or whatever online stuff you look at to know these things (unless it's a sauce lol).
