JUST IN per release: Old Dominion University Offensive Coordinator Dave Patenaude has resigned, head coach Ricky Rahne announced today.— Jami Frankenberry (@JamiVP) August 12, 2022
3 weeks before the Monarchs face us in the opener and the OC just...quits? That's weird.

He just started watching PSU's defense from last year and decided it was time to hang it up.
Pry, don't pull a Fuente and lose to Old Dirty U. That isn't too much to ask for, is it?
I wouldn't even lump the two together. I think Pry's Hokies will be much more sound than any of the Fu Hokie teams.
I think this is all I'm looking for. Beat who your supposed to. Do as expected in 50/50s. Preferably being able to claim those in hindsight would be good too
Clarify please.... Pry... don't get fucking smoked by a JUCO QB and have fights on the sidelines. If your can't pressure the QB, dont fucking wholesale blitz every down and leave your shitty corners on an island. Don't lose in a fucking stadium that recently added running water. Dont be a fucking clown.
Just for the sake of argument, Evans was a JUCO QB that won us 10 games and a trip to the ACCCG. Also scored more points against the eventual National champs than an Ohio State did (who scored approximately 0).
Probably not what happened, but since Rahne is an offensive guy he and the OC could've had philosophical differences.
I feel like this is what the interview process is for.
Hopefully this is because the OC was offered his dream job right when he also found a winning Powerball ticket.
ODU's offense last year was defintely Rahne's baby. It was a carbon copy of what he was running at Penn State. Only difference was that the tight end was taller at ODU.
Well, that's not a major distraction for a team, during preseason practice and three weeks before the season starts...
So do I bet the under or no?
Honestly that 52 has been tempting for a minute
We are going to go over easily with Bowen when we go Full Tilt Boogie.
Must have been pretty... offensive
Scandal incoming? Cheating w recruits wives?
Great Scott!!??!!
Not sure we have many married recruits, but I still laughed. Leg for effort
Called someone the N word per a source.
There's been a lot of that lately
There's been more of it being called out, cause football players found their voice.
Just look what happened in the off-season in Hawaii. The players today are fed up with toxic environments where people they trust are doing them wrong. They can use social media, they're NIL, take advantage of the transfer portal to leave toxic situations. Or, as they did in Hawaii, force a toxic coach out the door.
Coaches could literally kill you even 10 years ago. Right, Brian Kelly? Imagine if that happened today.
yes, but on the other hand NIL is bad because normal students don't get sponsorships and scholarships, or something. Grant wells needs to fix our offense and the US education system.
I'm also sure Liberty is just unlucky with all the bad rap articles and athlete comments.
Don't forget DJ Durkin, and all the struggles he has gone through! and spare a thought for chris doyle!
/ssssss
Meh.... very few truly toxic coaches at the HC level in major D1 sports. very very few. The issue is that toxic is now - "he raised his voice at me"... thats the problem. Now you will have more of what the NFL has- toxic players. Refusing to play, transferring every year, demanding more NIL money, etc. Stay tuned.
What evidence are you basing this on? Because it sure sounds like some 'get off my lawn' BS.
Evidence of Diva players in pro sports? You can't be serious.
Come on, you're better than that aren't you? You know full well that's not what I was talking about.
Toxic is not, "He raised his voice at me" - show me an article where that is the reason a coach is labeled as toxic. If a player doesn't want to play a sport because of shouting, they are probably not playing anywhere.
Racism, sexism, homophobia, etc. are toxic behaviors and they have been excused and/or glossed over in the past, but with increasing frequency they aren't anymore. Even if a coach isn't overtly one of those things, saying those types of things are damaging and indicate that they hold some of those beliefs. People are being held accountable for their words and actions when they weren't (but should have been) in the past. It boils down to respecting players as people, not acting like they are mindless drones whose sole reason for existing is to follow the coaches' every instruction just because he said so. Players being willing to say "what coach said isn't right" isn't being soft. It takes more courage to speak out than to knuckle under.
You can absolutely get after players for not doing the right things without degrading them. You can raise your voice but still be respectful of the person on the receiving end ("No, Tweedy, it's WHIP!").
As for the NFL having a lot of diva players, how many do you really think there are in the league? I'd estimate there's maybe a couple dozen players that fit that label out of nearly 1,700 players. But those players get headlines and talking head/podcast segments, especially in the off-season when there's nothing else to discuss. The noise:signal ratio is skewed and makes it seem like you're hearing about "diva" behavior a lot but it's a few instances being constantly referenced. Also, don't discount how these organizations will manipulate these stories to weaken the players' bargaining positions. If fan support swings too much in favor of the player, the teams use harsher language to describe their negotiations.
If a school and team is going to look out for their own interests ahead of a player's individual desires (which isn't necessarily a bad thing), who else is going to advocate for a player on an individual basis? They still aren't allowed agents/representation. What other tools are at a player's disposal? Sometimes recruits don't recognize a bad fit until they've joined the team and their options are limited. How long would you stay on a team that wasn't giving your what you need or isn't delivering on what they promised you? How many times would you try to find that good fit? Once? Twice? More? Self-advocating isn't being a diva, it's protecting yourself. Being a diva is refusing to do something for trivial reasons and being sold a bill of goods by a coaching staff isn't trivial IMO.
Playing devils advocate here for DCs sake, but didn't Cam Goode leave on a similar circumstance like two weeks into summer training?
I have no sauces and a less-than-stellar memory, but IIRC, he was not receptive to participating in the conditioning program Fuente was running to get the team in-shape for the tempo Fu wanted to run (actual in-game tempo results notwithstanding) and transferred. Now, we all know that Fuente (and the S&C staff) was not great at communicating, but I don't think Cam transferred because the staff shouted at him during workouts. IDK how upfront Fu was about how rigorous it would be to a recruit; I think I remember hearing that older players on the team were also surprised by how difficult it was.
On the flip-side, let's all remember Washington's drama with Albert Haynesworth's $100,000,000 contract. A veteran professional player was being paid the most in the League for his position, whose sole job is to be physically in-shape to play football at it's highest level and had "meet team fitness criteria" in his contract, reported to camp out of shape. Then he delivers this type of in-game performance.
That's why am I willing to label Al a diva: he was an adult professional who had been playing for several years in the league already; he was being paid the most of all the players at his position in the league; he was well aware of what physical standards would be required at camp.
Cam was a kid who was a freshman and may not have been told what he should expect to have to do during camp conditioning. Was he being a diva? Perhaps, but knowing what we do about how the last staff conducted business, I lean towards the grown-man coach shouldering most of the blame in how sub-optimal Cam's experience at Tech was.
Yeah, this is a terrible take. "Raised voice" isn't toxic and nobody is saying it's toxic except for people who are trying to downplay actually toxic behavior as "raised voices". Everyone understands that coaches are going to yell and cuss. That's part of the deal.
Surely, you aren't suggesting Brian Kelly has made decisions causing a kid to lose his life?/S
Don't forget DJ Durkin
oof bad look if true
I know a guy who could use a job right now
BAH GAWD,THATS THE PROGRAMKILLER'S MUSIC
"YOU'VE GOT, NO CHANCE! NO CHANCE IN HELL"
So when they roll out JF as the new OC it will get interesting.
That's the level job he belongs in
Jokes aside, if he ever wanted to be a head coach again, he probably needs P5 experience as a coordinator. Hard to run a program at that level when you've never been part of one
Well, Fuente sure made it look hard.
(...uncomfortable plastic water bottle sound...)
It eventually became clear he really didn't have any idea why things worked or didn't work. Mostly didn't.
At least our guys, us, our wives, and children will know the plays ahead of time....
Does ODU still have tall receivers? hope not
One 6-4, one 6-3, two 6-2
And former Penn State tight end Zack Kuntz, who is 6'8" and was second in the country in TE catches last season with 73...
Kuntz is going to be a dick to cover ba-dum-tiss
I don't think he could win a footrace with Estelle Getty, and she is dead. But Kuntz can go up and win the ball, and that scares me.
By the way, I am pretty sure Bowen recruited Kuntz to Penn State, so if anyone knows his game, it is the Hokies offensive staff.
Why the hell did he transfer from PSU to ODU?
Followed Rahne
whoops
I wonder if Mr. QB Extreme has put in a call
So has any more scuttlebutt risen to the top about why the OC left?
i went cruising around an ODU forum and the local news sites but nobody seems to know anything
I think Eric Kumah has since deleted the tweet, but he seemed to confirm that the coach used the word that shall never be used.
See my answer up further. My source is within the odu football program. Its legit, I just didn't want to plaster it everywhere.
VT is still -8 vs ODU. Anyone else have faith that Pry can clean up the mistakes we used to make all the time and cover that?
Yes.
I've stared at the line since its opened, I feel like we should at least win by 10 but the fact that it hasn't moved much is alarming. Does Vegas know something I dont?
yeah, that we're probably not going to be very good at all this year -- easy to have O&M glasses and see the easy schedule and get a bunch of hopium from the new staff. 30k foot view is a that VT has bad roster that probably got worse in the offseason, new schemes that may take some time to bed in, a rookie head coach with rookie coordinators on both sides of the ball, and so on
The sharps have already made their value plays when the lines opened. You probably won't see much movement until game week at this point, unless something big breaks, like a key injury to one team or the other.
or a coordinator resigning or something /s
s What are the odds of that happening (again)? /s
Pry yesterday when talking to the Marching Virginians even said there will be highs and lows this year and he needed them engaged for the entire time.
maybe not full engagement during the lows, let's not pull out the brown bags to wear and boo the team
I got it at -7.5 on my book yesterday.
It's gonna be a like 22 point win so that's good I guess.
I have 100 down that we cover -8. I have faith.
Confident? No. I don't underestimate the mental aspect of college football. We are on the road on a friday night against a school trying to prove itself against a bigger state school. Why Whit schedules this game on the road- I will never in a 100 years understand. 8 is a decent sized number. I might lay 6.5... not 8- mental. We have young 757 kids that want to show out, etc. Now knucklehead Trevon Hill is not on this roster so that might be worth a couple points.
I give the 8-10 points and take VT every time on any field vs ODU If we can't cover that we're in deep shit. Confident we're a very different team under CBP, but talks cheap and only the on field results matter. Whip that tail, Coach!!
