According to Virginia Tech's 2022 football media guide, the 2026 contest at Lane Stadium in Blacksburg has been rescheduled and will now be contested seven seasons later on Saturday, Sept. 10, 2033. The game in Provo remains as scheduled, which means the series will now kickoff at LaVell Edwards Stadium in Provo on Sept. 14, 2030.
That leaves our future home OOC opponents:
'23 - ODU, Purdue
'24 - Marshall, Rutgers
'25 - Vandy, ODU, JMU
'26 - VMI, ODU
'27 - UMD, Liberty Biberty
At this rate, maybe instead of any home OOC games we should do a tour of Virginia and our whole OOC can be at ODU, at Liberty, at JMU, at VMI

Our out of conference schedule coming up is truly awful. If Pry does end up turning us around, people are going to be dogging us for our absolutely pathetic OOC games.

That's a lot of in state schools. Maybe the plan is to leave the ACC and start a Commonwealth Conference with all the VA schools? I'm sure we'd get more TV money that way versus what the ACC is giving us. /s

Next year is the first time we don't play Miami in 30 years. They have an open spot and we have Purdue making a return trip here, which approx 0 people give a shit about. Lets home and home em for 23 and 26 (to replace BYU). Whit make it happen.
Also idk how many times this needs to be said, but get Liberty off the god damn schedule. We're helping to sportswash all of their bullshit and at the very least, are complicit in giving exposure to a bunch of equally shitty and annoying people. Replace them with literally anyone else. ECU at least had good BBQ and tailgating

Road game at U of R would be a tough ticket to get... but I'd be there.
I also went to the last game we played at U of Arrrrrgh (ECU).
I could walk to that stadium from my childhood and then inherited home, until mid-2017.
One of the benefits of growing up in Westham/Tuckahoe
Company I work for had a president who was a UR alum and we often got $5 tickets for UR college games. We could always get seats anywhere from front row to 10 rows up with zero effort or even stand just outside the end zones.
Side note-best games I saw there were my sophomore year at Douglas Freeman. We had gone 7-0-1 heading into the home game against Highland Springs @Freeman- 6000 people at that game we won 8-7(where HS was penalized for more yards than our offense produced). Had a rematch in the regional semis against them at City Stadium as it was then known. Sellout overflow crowd of 15,000 and same for the regional final the next week against Petersburg. (Unfortunately lost in the state semis held @Highland Springs the next week-losing to Hampton Crabbers 27-7 after being tied at 7 going into the 4th. Hampton had 4 D-linemen over 200 lbs while our largest players were 175 or so-m not to mention 7 of our players played both ways as starters)-(hmm now that I think about it those probably prepared me to be a Hokie student and fan as it was similar to VTs style)

Or, and hear me out, Whit has to make changes to accommodate Pry's input. Been some chatter he wants Whit to get better matchups. BYU is a good one, but may not match Pry's philosophy.
I think it's just the part where BYU is going from 12 non-conferences games per year down to 3.

Yep- the poorest states in America are in SEC country, but somehow they have unlimited booster money for college football. It's sick what the average household income is in LA, Miss, Bama, SC... but if any of them need a new weight room, they break ground the next day. Makes zero sense.

It really is fascinating to me. I get how it happens in Texas, where everyone is obsessed with football, and there's a few people who made it stupid rich from oil. It is a bit mystifying how this happens in poverty ridden states like the ones you mentioned.
One of my favorite , Highly recommend Rammer Jammer Yellow Hammer - The author is a journalist who spends a season living in an RV and traveling to every single Alabama game. He talks all about the people he meets, the friends he makes, and the lifestyle of people who are dedicated enough to do actually put their life (mostly) on hold for 15 weeks each year.
Anyways, the book is from a pre-stubhub era, so one of the challenges for the author is getting tickets for each game. For one game, he gets introduced to this fan who's a chicken farmer. Turns out the guy is loaded and is a big booster. Didn't go to Bama, might not have graduated high school, but he's financially successful and a big booster. I just can't imagine Bama (and the like) have a ton of fans like this.
So, this is what I think of whenever I think of Alabama boosters 🤷♂️

I'm not hating on it at all, just citing an example of the phenominon that is Alabama football.
I think of all the wealthy people I've met in my lifetime, and they all have college degrees, and they all work business or STEM. Somehow, Alabama - a university that doesn't have a reputation for placing students in high earning jobs - has found a way to create a massive network of donors/boosters, some of whom have never gone to college. It just speaks to how culturally iconic Alabama football is in the region.

Oh yeah for sure. But also there's not shit else in Alabama besides college football, no NFL, no MLB, just Bama and Auburn. So if you can put the entire populace in that stranglehold you can do well, not to mention most people living Alabama are from Alabama, whereas probably 1/3 of current Virginians aren't native, not alumni, and no ties to our two large state schools
Unfortunately, we've become a darned-if-you-win, darned-if-you-lose matchup for big name schools. If a big name P5 (P2?) school schedules us and they lose, the opinion would be it's a bad loss. If they win, who have they beat? A mid-level ACC Coastal (not for long) team. Back in the mid 2000's, an Alabama could schedule us and if they lose, it's not a bad loss, it would usually be early in the season, and there would be time to recover. If they win it would have been a respectable win. The more we win, the closer we get to being able to negotiate some higher level matchups.
Neutral site games have also lost their luster. There are fewer of them than years past.
Yes. Do the math... Overpriced ticket - either have to donate lots or sit in the upper deck, airfair, overpriced hotel, etc. A family can easily spend 1K on a neutral site game.
Neutral sight games are way more accessible than home games IMO. Neutral site games are typically in major cities, with easy airport access and lots of lodging options.
Home games (which I'd much rather go to) are such a pain in the ass. Lodging is the biggest pain - First of all, if I want to stay near campus, I have to make plans the week the schedule is announced, otherwise my options will be very limited. Even if I plan this trip 9 months in advance, I'm still spending close to a grand on lodging. The other big pain is getting there. I either have to spend 7 hours driving, or pay out the ass to fly into Roanoke (then I have to find a way to get from Roanoke to Blacksburg). The cost of tickets and everything else pales in comparison to the time, money, and effort required to book lodging and travel.
When you're playing in a major metropolitan area, you can book flights and lodging within the month and still have more and cheaper options than Blacksburg.
We've been hearing no one wants to play us for 30 years. I'd take a win over a 7-5 P5 team over a 10 win G5 team.
Maybe we just suck at scheduling. Maybe we don't put proper statements in our contracts to prevent a Wisconsin situation. But our OOC slate is rarely ever good.
Seems like the scheduling got better for a while, and now it's slipping again.
Also, teams seem to be able to slip out of their commitment. Seems more like guidelines than rules.
It only got better because ND is forced to play us. Nothing we did. We had one good year of actual scheduling in 2015. 2005 was the last time we didn't play a FCS team.
And about 60 other teams can say the same thing.
Probably more than that, ND USC and UCLA I think are the only ones that haven't played a FCS. But FCS doesn't make for good schedules. I'd rather play a terrible G5 than a FCS.
In my ideal world we'd have a rotation of WVU, Tenn, PSU, KY and UMd which is more WVU heavy. Then another P5 school. Then a rotation of Marshall, JMU (once g5), app st, maybe Charlotte with another g5 school.
But that's just me.
Would love to throw South Carolina in there, but no way they take on another ACC team annually with the yearly Clemson matchup.
