Up until now, Whit has been an outsider with a view. His Virginia roots provided him an understanding of the history and tradition of Virginia Tech athletics, but not the minutia of day-to-day operations. By his own account, every employee has a blank slate, and he'll begin the job with no preconceived notions. He's going to put forth the effort to take the vitals of the entire department via one-on-one meetings without a timetable, but rather a sense of urgency. "We're not going to change just for the sake of change," Whit said.
That's a logical, methodical, and intelligent way for Whit, or any new CEO, to begin his or her tenure. He'd probably get more of a roar from the fan base if he came in and immediately shook some things up. However, his plan for due diligence is prudent. Competent bosses don't try to fix problems they don't understand. Furthermore, aside from Tech's recent skid, the athletics programs have flourished more than floundered under Jim Weaver. Whit may not have to drastically change the way Tech does business.
Whit was a batboy for his dad Brad's baseball teams at JMU, and played baseball there too. "I'm a product of the student-athlete experience." Whit has the insights of an athlete, coach's son, and administrator. Combine that with his age—43 years old—to get an athletic director that can relate to the perspectives of almost all the stakeholders at the table.
Throughout his press conference Whit made it clear Blacksburg is a destination and not a steppingstone for him. He said, "It's good to be back home again in Virginia". He later called the Director of Athletics position at Virginia Tech a "dream job".
He wants to engage donors and fans by creating memorable experiences and building relationships. He understands excellent customer service is crucial to an athletic department that relies so much on fan donations.
There has been plenty of negative fan experiences aside from the losses as of late: "Stick It In" being banned, interactions, or lack thereof, with the Hokie Club, and passing up a Thursday night game in Blacksburg to name a few. As Whit said, he can't control wins and losses, but he can show fans he wants them to get their dollar's worth with little things like #ALLMAROONEVERYTHING. A small gesture might go a long way when trying to coax money from folks.
As Whit said, "There's an old adage in our business that everybody's first gift is their smallest." He's interested in securing new donors while retaining current ones. Considering Associate Athletics Director for Football Operations John Ballein told David Teel that there are only 9,953 Hokie Club members and, "Our pro players, last year, made almost $48 million ... and we didn't receive any money from them," Whit will have an opportunity to open a lot of currently closed wallets.
While fundraising is important, he gets that Tech will never have the budget of Ohio State or Texas and will have to be financially sound. In his own words, "We've got to out-people people, we've got to hire very well, and we've got to be very financially sound with our resources."
He left Cincinnati in a much better place than he found it. Matt Opper of Down the Drive, a Cincinnati blog, wrote this after he learned Whit would be moving on.
His tenure spanned just two years, but he did more to progress the Bearcats athletic department than Mike Thomas did in 6 years. Thats not really hyperbole, its [SIC] an objective fact. He got the Nippert [Stadium renovation] project, that had been sitting on Thomas's desk for almost the duration of his tenure, to actually break ground. He locked down [men's basketball coach] Mick Cronin and sent shockwaves through college football by bringing Tommy Tuberville in.
He raised money, built things, retained a successful coach, and hired a big name one. (And say what you will about Tuberville, but that was a smart outside the box move. After Cincy lost Brian Kelly and Butch Jones in a six-year span, and it became clear Cincy was on the outside looking in of conference realignment, Whit needed to make splash. He could market Tuberville as going 13–0, and undefeated in the SEC to keep the fundraising momentum going, as well as win some football games.)
After watching his introductory presser, I was impressed by the soft spoken, but bright and personable young administrator. Given his Virginia heritage (fifth generation Virginian), student-athlete background, affinity for the job itself, detail to a budget, ability to raise funds, hire coaches, and focus on the fan experience I believe Whit's the right fit at Tech.
The only question of the afternoon that slipped him up, "What is a Hokie?" I didn't know that answer when I first stepped on campus either, but I learned quickly, and the answer is always, "I am." You're a Hokie now, Whit. Welcome to Virginia Tech.

For some reason I had never thought of student-athletes turned pro as potential donors, but this would be brilliant to get them on board. Even as a backup, I bet Tyrod got a nice bonus after last year's Super Bowl, I imagine Kam Chancellor is doing pretty well for himself at this point in the season as well.
NFL players in general aren't regular contributors to their colleges.
Seems to me that they tend to make big 1-time donations when they do give back.
If these guys would simply endow the sports scholarships it would really do a lot for the athletic program. Other revenues would go a lot further if scholarships were already covered.
Very well written, Joe. I was very happy with what I heard today.
less than 10K Hokie Club members is just sad to me..that needs to improve..drastically. Until I saw what people were writing in that other thread I knew very little about the HC. I am only 25 and I graduated from Tech in 2010. I have not been contacted by the HC but my gf's dad is a member. I believe he is a Silver Hokie (not exactly sure what that means but I can sorta guess) and I don't know how much he donates but I know it's more than I can afford at this time. Based on the very small amount of information in front of me I just assumed that the HC was kind of elitist and I would have to fork over loads of $$ to be a member. I always figured I would just join later in life when I'm a little more financially stable.
I think improving the Hokie Club and how it interacts with Alumni could go a long way towards improving the financial situation for Tech..not just within the athletic department but also the various academic departments. I think making it clear to Alumni early on that every little bit helps would open up some wallets. I'm sure that I wasn't the only person who assumed being a HC member meant donating a few organs worth each year. If they contact me tomorrow saying any amount is welcome and there's no pressure I would happily cut a check for $100
"Hokies respect our opponent, but fear no one"
It's about time we got a little fucking swagger. Consider yourself on notice, ACC. New President. New AD. New coaches that fit and fit well. Recruiting is up...all we need now is a bit more love via the HC.
Hokie football, 2014: Damage, Inc.
It's really pretty insane (and pretty cool, IMO) how much younger we've gotten as an institution the past year or so. According to I think David Teel, we went from having the oldest AD in the ACC to the youngest, our president is much younger (I want to say early 50s, yes?) and then just take a look at the football coaching staff. I'm not sure why there's such a youth movement at VT right now, but I'm pretty ok with it. I'm all for some young blood now and hopefully some more stability over the next 15+ years or so.
Here! Here!
I know I'm coming across as a bit of an arse here, but its "Hear! Hear!" not "Here! Here!"
I've seen it being used incorrectly a lot around here (and now that I mention it, I've seen 'alot' being used with some frequency as well) and it bothers me.
stepping down from that soap box now
OK, I was on my phone when I did this. And others are as well (why "alot" gets used some). It saves time. Please provide some leeway for using mobile media to stay involved in these great Hokie Fan discussions.
And, I am not sorry I have big fingers.....
Fair enough, but I may just have to post this every time someone uses "alot"
If you don't understand, read http://hyperboleandahalf.blogspot.com/2010/04/alot-is-better-than-you-at...
Poking a little fun is appropriate, but the whole Grammar Police thing is getting kind of tired. Unless someone posts in total unintelligible txtspk, then just leave it alone.
Brah, you misspelled text speak.
Also did you know slang actually derived from shortened language?
using the auto-correct crutch isn't a viable excuse to me. There is no good reason why you can't review the text on your phone and fix it prior to posting. The only possible reason I can think of is that you're driving at the time of the post...and NOBODY should ever be doing things on their phone while they drive.
I just don't buy into the "I was using my phone, give me a break" excuse. Thousands of people are going to read what you write on-line. I just want Virginia Tech to be represented well. Using correct spelling and grammar can go a long way towards making us look smart and credible as a community. God knows we're all tired of hearing about how 'smart' and 'well educated' that other school is. Well I'm tired of that stigma and I hate when we give them easy-to-find reasons to call us dumb.
I don't see the harm in taking an extra second or two to review what you write prior to posting. Make sure it's correct and that it doesn't make you look like a dolt. I know there are very smart people on here who aren't masters of the English language. It doesn't matter how smart you are, when you can't convey the message appropriately your credibility goes flying out the window. We have ample resources at our fingertips to double check ourselves. Use them.
"Well I'm tried of that stigma..."??
Dude, you're an awesome Hokie, and I love you. Now, if I was going to post something like this, I would get out the electron microscope to hunt down those grammar errors.
touche! fixed
those are two sentence fragments
Technically, the first fragment is okay as interjections only require the "!". However, it should have been capitalized and I believe there is an accent over the "e"?
I give him 4/10, would not read again.
Shouldn't the opening sentence start with a capital letter?
lol...yes it should..I was wondering how long it would take for someone to mention that..of all things..
I'm sure my sentence structure has fallacies as well. My point was to try fixing the really simple things like 'alot', 'here here', and your vs you're . I realize I painted a huge target on my back but it's for the benefit of the community. I'll take the downvotes and critiques as they come.
What is this word "lol" that you wrote? Could you mean "laugh out loud"? And if used correctly in a sentence structure should it not be written as such: I laughed out loud at what you wrote.
I get what you're saying but seriously if anyone from LOLUVA or any other school wanted to use an online sports blog as a indication of the general intelligence of the larger student body there is a larger problem. We are not submitting articles to a medical journal here. It's tongue and cheek comment and replies amongst like minded fans. Sometimes we dont even write anything and just use a image or gif. Does that mean we have worse grammar than other universities? I seriously doubt you can make that correlation.
I for one have stupidly forced myself to read the blogs of some other universities and I have not seen any that are comparable to the people on here. That is not trying to blow smoke up everyone's ass in hopes of turkey legs. That is just my personal experience.
I mean just look at what the Notre Dame fans are writing about Isaiah McKenzie in that thread. That is borderline illegible.
So in summary. Chillax dude.
You make valid points. I know this is an online forum but I guess I didn't realize how little people cared about grammar/spelling. I'm sure everyone in here would be able to tidy up their English if they were writing something professional. I have obsessive compulsive tendencies and I suspect that contributes to why certain missuses draw reactions from me.
My English isn't perfect by any means. I'm not trying to set myself up above anyone else. I didn't major in any sort of degree that is heavy on language. However, for some reason, there are certain things that just make me twitch. I usually try to ignore it but when I see it over and over and over I have trouble fighting the urge to correct it.
I don't mean to offend. I'm sorry if I did.
I'm not offended, but let me give you an example. My grammar and spelling is far from perfect on TKP but there are valid reasons why. First and foremost I am usually posting whilst working and I think most others are as well. For others that may mean that they must type relatively briskly and post quickly so that it does not appear as if they are "wasting time" on a blog (as if TKP could ever be classified so). For me I own my own business and have way too many things to do to write, reread and edit on most occasions. It's not that I am being lazy, rather it's that I am already incredibly busy and reading articles and posting on TKP is a luxury during my work day. I don't want to use what little time I have going over what I wrote every time. That is an excuse, but I would argue a valid one.
Largely though, I must say that one of the biggest reasons I started posting to TKP last August was because I found that people DID take time, or at least put the effort into, writing correctly worded comments.
There are some things that bug me and if it were in a conversation with friends I would likely point it out to them, but here I tend to give everyone the benefit of the doubt that they are trying to contribute to this community while they are busy doing many other things.
Leg for sacking up and admitting you may have made a mistake. To stick up for you though, you weren't really nitpicking on grammar but correcting a mistake and in my eyes trying to help smitty. For example, my mother-in-law often mispronounces words or uses them incorrectly. My wife and I feel awkward correcting her, but we feel that it's better than keeping quiet and potentially letting others think worse of her. It's probably also better than coming from us than a stranger or colleague. TKP is like a big family, and sometimes family needs to look out for each other.
Thank you for the leg and kind words. I like the family mentality here and I'm all for some tough love. I think it's all just water under the bridge at this point and I'm content with where things stand now.
More importantly, were you writing 'gif', or 'gif'?
nice one
and for your reference I was saying "gif", not "gif"
I think "gif" is pronounced "gif," in the same way that "Leal" sounds exactly like "Leal."
I suppose but my zeal to pronounce "Leal" like "Leal" lost its appeal when I watched the Sun Bowl reel.
Here! Here! We owe alot to the Grammar Police. They keep us safe.
This whole discussion was just an excuse to post:

Obligated to post
Whit sounds very level headed. Techhokie13 makes a valid point bout the youth movement in the VT sports management leadership. That is a significant step in the right direction. I am very excited bout our future...OUR future....
Let's. Go. HOKIES!!
My only criticism is that I think he may have stated that he has "formerly" accepted the Director of Athletics position. Hopefully it was a Freudian slip because he was chuckling at London in his head.
I'm just thankful he realizes that VT is not the 'University of Virginia Tech'
Here's my rather simplistic plan for gaining additional revenue -
Raise the athletic fee by $100 per student, double the number of Hokies in the HC, ask for reasonable donations from the pros, see if any of the wealthiest Hokies can do more than they are now, and start looking for some major corporate sponsors.
If Whit can achieve some portion of what I've outlined above in his first two years, the Tech Athletic Department will have plenty of cash to take care of a number of pressing financial issues.
Does the student athletic fee come as part of a "Hokie Club" membership? I don't think it did.
But raise that fee by $100 and make every student then a part of the Hokie Club. Want to catch them early? Make it apart of a fee they have to pay anyway and give them actual benefits and events that let them see that they are the future. Every student, a HC member.
You do it different though. Allow students to buy into a "Student Hokie Club" which would give you priority seating at smaller sports events, offer tailgates before games, and have other incentives for being a part of it. Partner with places downtown so that they can get more business too. Then your membership from that would translate into being a Hokie Club member when you graduate. You're given priority points for being part of it so that you have a foundation when you graduate.
That is a GREAT idea.
You need to deliver these exact words to the athletic department. Either by telephone, email, tweet, snail mail, whatever. In fact, do all of those, then follow up in person to make sure they got the message.
Ha, thanks. I just took the idea from a buddy of mine who did something similar at CNU and adapted it. He created a spirit group that is now the largest on campus organization there. They even had things where they had a shirt and made a deal with a restaurant that if you wore the shirt there, you could get a meal (2 slices of pizza and a drink) for cheap. I'm sure there are businesses in Blacksburg that would participate in something like this, even if the benefit could only be used once, like $1 ticket to the Lyric once per month. For now, I'll hold on to this idea and put it into the hands of the right people once Babcock has gotten in and started to get things moving.
Fantastic idea, maybe charge $25-50 and you would get priority seating for football and basketball, and if other sports charge admission you would get it discounted or a concession voucher. Plus a turkey leg a season at football games. I would have loved that and I bet it would appeal to 30% or more of students.
25k for Football National Championship is not enough incentive. Let's bump that to 100k and get some real drive!
jk, when the names came out I said Babcock looked like a great hire. I am excited about his excitement and I think he is going to revolutionize HC. I also think we see that indoor practice field get pushed into 5th gear and done very soon.
It's $25k in addition to the 2 months salary for making a playoff game ($39k/mo to start).
So you had it right he would get a little over $100k. I say let's get it for him!
For those looking for the video, I couldn't get to HokieSports.com videos from where I was at (xbox 360), but searching "whit babcock virginia tech" pulled a few good ones:
-Prepared speech portion of press conference
-Kevin Jones' comments on the selection process
-Tommy Tubberville's comments on his departure (positive)
First two were apparently produced by TSL (watermarked) but free on YouTube. As an aside, Mrs. EMC couldn't remember who Kevin Jones was ("pregnancy brain"), so I showed her a video called "The Untouchables".
Thanks for that. Most of those came at a time where I couldn't watch on TV, I had to listen on the radio so, there is a lot there I missed seeing.
Nice one, Joe. I had no idea he was only 43. That could be awesome, or horrible.
JFK was only 43 when he was elected president, oh look, a butterfly.
~ from David Teel
It's only awesome.
His resume shows great promise, and his background and practices show he can reach out to Hokies both young and old.
Time will tell, but this is a great get. Maybe it's PR, but it doesn't seem PR when he says it, but to hear someone say anything like "Dream Job" with regards to Virginia Tech, and to have the background with it...you know he's going to take it to heart.
Having Weaver around as a consultant is pretty nice, too (though at almost half a mil per year...ugh).
one more for old time's sake:
I'm excited for this hire. I think he's going to do great things here. I bet he gets the indoor practice facility erected in record time.
I just got this mental image of him in blue jean overalls out there with a hammer like Jimmy Carter. Build us a practice facility, Whit!
Haha, you typed "erected"
Speaking of noon kickoffs, I had dream last night that every game this year other than the two Thursday night games were nooners. It was absolutely horrible.
What if I told you that the Thursday night games were actually noon kickoffs?
Somewhere in the world, it's noon.
So true. And everywhere in the world it's always
Oh no, it's already half past Beer o'clock? I'm late!
Hurry up! The party already started!
Thanks for the write up and detail Joe, and I also think that this is a good hire. Not to be an age-ist but College Athletics is a fast moving machine. I think that we have only seen the beginning in terms of changes and that the future will only bring more...potential dissolution of the NCAA?...more realignment? playoff expansion? paying players? player unions? I am more comfortable with someone that is nimble, and shrewd, and with a mind for whats happening 5 years from now, not 5 months. Hopefully Whit is up to the task and ready to move Hokienation forward.
i keep seeing this topic and reading it as, "What's Right fit at Virginia Tech?" and all i can think of is, "tight yoga pants on big butts"...
i may have problems...
Only the same problems roughly half the population has.
What, exactly, is the issue?
Edited: shouldn't have done it. Sorry!
Yes. That. Exactly. I think you got it.
Wait, what were we talking about?
Yay another picture of a womans ass.....great...
Much cuter!
I just wanted to better represent the world of asses and I found an ass's ass. It blew my mind.
That earned you you're 5,500th turkey leg. Enjoy
Thanks! As my leg count has gone up, my productivity count has gone down...yikes.
I'll sell a few legs for a meal at Homeplace. Any takers??
Man I haven't been to the Homeplace since I was a senior in high school.
Assception!
Just because this place should have something for everyone.
Oh my!!! Yes!!! Thanks Joe!!
And for those of you that just come for cute internet gifs
I actually just "searched something for everyone" and this came up with the title "Cats Sharks Ducks Roombas and Poop"
To be fair, we're probably below the internet ass-per-content average by about 3-4 orders of magnitude.
But, you have made a valid point.
Well...at least I don't down vote the asses...
Most of the butt talk here revolves around pork, as it should.
You're making me hungry Joe, I think I must order Buz and Ned's BBQ here in Richmond for lunch now.
I thought you were in Central America, when did you get back stateside? Either way, welcome back!
