Starting WRs: Smith, Lofton, Gosnell
RBs: Holston, King, Black (no Thomas)
PR: Harvey
devin farrell at 3rd string QB stuck out to me. i guess malachi thomas is not expected to play this weekend. looks like kakvitsas will see some playing time as a backup WR
Farrell #3 QB over Bullock ๐ป
Tisdale 3rd on the Will Starter "OR" list.
Thought Tisdale going to 3rd string was a motivation tactic during camp but maybe something else?
From all accounts Jaden Keller stole the spot from him, there might possibly be times this season Tisdale ends up at Mike
Caught Pry's press conference a bit ago and he was asked about Will. He said he didn't want to say too much there, but we may see some diversity with personnel groupings at the linebacker spots. Should be interesting to see what they do there. He also made a point to mention how everyone has been cross training at different LB positions.
I'm thinking Bullock probably hits the portal. I hope he stays to compete, but with 3 years eligibility for Wells and now having been passed by Ferrell it seems like it could be likely. That is the one position you can always expect a transfer when a guy can't crack the two deep.
That is likely. It could also signify that he is taking the first run on the scout team and that he may be listed as 3rd string later if Ferrell takes a turn running the scout team.
A lot of Seniors and a lot of Freshman on that depth chart
Holston is a known quantity at RB. I'm excited to see what King and Black can do while Thomas is recovering from injury.
Will Kakavitsas definitely did something right in camp. Listed as a backup in 3 different places.
I mean it sounds like a name of a guy who we will hear about Tom Brady throwing TDs to and they are telling how he was a walk on.
Does it make be a bad Hokie fan that this is the first time I have even heard of this guy on our roster?
you are not alone.
Same
Fuente mentioned Kakavitsas taking a reps in practice as punt returner a couple of years (?) ago during the Tayvion slump and said that Kakavitsas surprised folks then and looked "very natural" at it. So of course Fuente ultimately chose a different option.
CJ McCray was a surprising absence, but Pry just said he was dealing with an injury. I was looking forward to seeing him at full speed.
Sorry, until I see otherwise Conner at FS scares the bejesus out of me.
{w.V.u.'s} "We, agry." {/saliva, gland}
Love that Holston is ready to go while Thomas is still working to get back. That really maximizes how they can utilize King and Black without having one of them be the primary inside ball carrier.
I'd rather see the other backs than Holston. His production has been mediocre while collecting practice accolades for a couple of years. Time to see what the new guys can do with some carries.
I take nothing the last staff did as a predictor of this year. Holston is probably the best pass protector out of that group which allows some help settling in the QB in a new offense.
Underrated point. I would definitely depend on Holston over the field in that regard.
Groups I feel worse about: WR and OL.
Groups I feel better about: DT and CB
Curious how the depth chart makes you feel worse about OLINE? Although tbh eve expecting it to look like this, seeing it gives me some gitters if someone gets hurt early this season haha
I'm there too.
I DO like the size: we've got some big bodies up front, and hopefully the younger ones will get coached up by Coach Rudolph.
I guess I'm more worried about some mentions of the change in blocking schemes, but I'll leave that to the more trained eyes.
4 of 5 backups are freshman and the tackle spots are crazy thin.
This, I wasn't feeling great, but seeing it laid out on paper made the reality hit harder. Same at WR, just a lot of youth and inexperience, which I knew was going to be the case, but seeing it laid bare, its just striking. On the other hand, the manners that popup at DT and CB are people that have shown promise and seem to have impressed the new staff which makes me think they have improved, so feeling better there.
I thought Gosnell was out for the season?
Two different players, Benji - hurt, Stephen - starting
Oh duh, thanks.
Yeah this confused me a lot during the injury discussion.
The speed at which y'all reply to posts baffles me.
I've watched this gif many, many times. This guys ability to open his gullet is baffling.
Can you imagine the burp that came out after that?
My 7 year old son saw that or a similar video and has been practicing his (water) chug ever since.
How long before I should move him to ram's piss?
As soon as possible
Seeing Blumrick at #3 on the TE depth and all I can think about is the return of the Wild Turkey formation, but he's got a long way to go to get to Greg Boone size who was (holy shit!) 280lbs (?!?!).
Ah yes, I fondly remember BOOOOOOONE every time he touched the ball. Good times.
Not necessarily #3 on the depth chart, note the OR's seems to signify different guys for different plays/packages, no?
You are correct - I overlooked that. That tells me that each is on equal ground and its going to be matchup dependent on who sees the field.
I missed it at first too and wondered how a guy that we were told was one of the most athletic on the team slipped to #3 TE
I do not like that WR depth chart. The appearance of (presumably) a walk-on that early is not inspiring confidence when supposedly guys like Holloway, Moss, etc. have been impressing among the youngsters.
Additionally, Gosnell starting seems way out of left field.
Wild to see Tisdale legitimately in third. I wonder what the story is there.
There is an "or" beside the first 2 names. Not a definitive 1, 2, 3 ranking
That does not make me feel any better tbh.
Gosnell doesn't seem super strange considering he's an older player and seemed to be doing a good job as camp progressed. He's also a bigger body type at 6'2 that you ideally want split out wide. I think we kind of presumed the top three to be Smith, Blue, and Lofton. But Lofton is definitely a slot guy, and it seems Blue is more comfortable in the slot as well (although he probably could line up wide if needed). The walk-on being next man up at both wide spots is concerning though. We heard a lot about Moss and Holloway as you mention, and there's also Jaylen Jones who has a lot of promise.
Jones missed a lot of time with something non-football related so that isn't too concerning. After a few more games I am hoping that the depth chart at WR features some of these names we're discussing.
Jaden Blue also spent a fair bit of time in a non-contact practice jersey this summer if I'm remembering the twitter injury reports correctly.
Wouldn't be surprised if they're just holding out some of those guys (including, not limited to, McCray, Thomas, Lawson) until the home opener or the WVU game.
I'm guessing that the young guys showed out at route running and making catches, but may need some work on run blocking.
Hoping there is some depth chart gamesmanship going on here.
CJ McCray (DE) and Jaylen Jones/Christian Moss(WR) are the three names I'm surprised aren't in the 2deep. I see some people talking about McCray being injured. Is Jones injured too? The WR depth chart with Kakavitsas backing up everyone is somewhat scary. What's the insight on him, he's clearly doing something right. Where is the depth at that position though?
Any word on Jalen Stroman? Feels like we haven't heard much about him this offseason, but who knows
He's Chamarri Conner's backup.
Yes... I noticed that. Was looking more for staff comments on how he's progressing
My thoughts:
1) Haha wow Jorden McDonald at backup DE is cool. I don't think I've ever seen a dude go from CB to Safety to DE before!
2) Really surprised to not see Blue starting. I hadn't kept up with him this offseason but there seemed to be a ton of hype when he came to VT. Hoping he still has a great year!
3) Seeing Kaleb Smith (former walk-on) as starting WR and being backed up by a (presumed) walk-on is scary lol. Smith always seems to have a strong offseason but it hasn't translated into results in-season. Hopefully he can do better than 20 yards/game as a starting WR again and show out.
4) I really hope that Keller and McDonald had an epic offseason for them to wind up in front of Tisdale. This seems to be a really weird move. Like "something that Fuente would do" weird.
5) I feel oddly calm about our offensive line, as long as we don't suffer major injuries.
Kaleb lit it up during the spring game. Hope he can continue that type of production.
Yeah I'm really hoping with the new coaching staff and new QB it will be his year.
1) I saw that, too- The McDonald twins contending for reps at LB and DE this soon is crazy!
4) I'm not sure anybody's "in front" of Tisdale. The Will spot seems to have all 3 players tied. I think they're just listing everybody in alphabetical order (although I do see Kendricks is listed before Fuga. Maybe that's a mistake and maybe they are listing the ORs in order of preference).
Re: 4)
It's 1st down, 2nd down, 3rd down. So, they'll all get equal reps. ๐
2) Blue was hurt much of fall camp in a blue jersey. He will see the field a lot this year.
Now let's see an injury report to see who is missing from this depth chart (ahem Jaylen Jones)
TWO double ORs!!!

FREE Cole Beck!!!

Keep hope alive. Lol. Still holding at...0 snaps? Won't even dress for ODU will he?
Yeah, Thomas isn't playing any time soon. My suspicion 2 weeks ago is starting to look correct. I would be shocked if we saw him at all the first half of the season.
Would be surprised if we see Murray play this week.
Jail for traffic violations, talk about punishment not fitting the crime
Well there are traffic violations and there are TRAFFIC VIOLATIONS. In either case, blowing off a court date rarely leads to a positive outcome.
He didn't get arrested for traffic violations, he got arrested for not showing up to court...
He prob'ly didn't want to drive there.
Okay take the next step and ask yourself why did he have to show up to court
I've had to show up for a simple expired registration before in order to prove I had corrected the issue and not pay the fine. It could literally be as simple as that but then he fails to appear and yeah, you get picked up for that one.
Not going to debate policy because it's against the guidelines but just because something is "how it works" or "I would do this in that situation", doesn't mean it isn't a dumb rule.
Probably was for something other than speeding or failure to signal. OR it was speeding and he didn't pay the ticket, which is how you get to not show up to court.
Could be any number of things. But that's his business to handle, not ours to speculate over.
Driving on a suspended license is a misdemeanor. In some courts if you have your license back and/or you live out of state you can hire an attorney to appear on your behalf, but if you don't have your license or if that particular court isn't terribly chill you have to show up. I don't know what Caroline County, MD says but my gut says that Murray just didn't think it was a big deal and found out the hard way.
Reading the article it says that Jimmy Turk represents him. I didn't know Jimmy practiced in MD as well. I guess when you're the VT football lawyer you want to be able to practice wherever the players live. He's probably quite glad #TX2VT didn't work out or else he'd have to get barred in another state.
Turk technically doesn't have to practice in MD, and while it depends on local court rules, Turk can work with local MD counsel to file and appear in their courts. FWIW, his website does not include being a member of the MD state bar.
Pro hac vice
Yes I am aware of the procedure, I wanted to take a shot at Fuente's recruiting plan and was willing to go a long way to make the joke.
I'm convinced you have all of Shoresy broken into gifs and ready to use for any situation
๐๐
There really out to be a way to award more legs some time.
No it's the way honks on the horn should be. Once you hit the limit that's it.
Like you're driving down the road and someone cuts you off and you go to honk the horn and it just goes ffffttt. And you're like SHIT!! I wish I wouldn't a seen Ricky on the sidewalk!!!
Appreciate the insight, Mitch!
oof I hate that. Honks should be unlimited. You can't just let someone drive around having gotten away scot free with cutting you off
I've been keeping some tabs open.
And just yesterday I thought to myself that the team had a relatively uneventful off season when it came to legal and morality issues.
At least this is something minor and can get cleared up.
That and Turk is his DA so he is in good hands here. I'm not sure how much to read into his playing time, this happened last week and he is still listed on the team sheet so I would expect (unless Pry was surprised by this like we all are) that the team has known about this. It seems minor to me...sometimes these kids don't realize the process that happens when being ticketed and it could just be an honest mistake or it could be more.
i was very confused by your use of "DA" in this context
yea, DA is short for district attorney, aka city/county prosecutor. They're the opposing counsel of Turk.
I just read it as Defense Attorney, because of... context.
I am liking the recruiting difference at DE. seniors are both 6'1" and probably maxed out at 255 lbs, all the Freshman behind them are 6'4" and growing.
Wow. What happened that Tisdale is 3rd on LB.
I refer you to the use of the word: "OR"
Marve/Pry don't think he fits the scheme better than the guys ahead. Pry mentioned he had less than ideal technique when he got tired.
I feel like if he doesn't take the starting spot he will pull a Charlie Brewer and be in the portal before he plays 4 games to preserve his eligibility.
That would be unfortunate and I hope he doesn't take that path - not only is everyone an injury or two away from starting, defensive players in particular are a targeting call away from being needed on the field, too.
Just saw Andy bitter on Twitter say holston was a game time decision? Didn't t realize he was injured
What's the word on Kenji? I figured by 2nd year he would have a role in the offense. Or at least be somewhere on the depth chart๐คท๐พโโ๏ธ
Out for the season, not to be confused with the other Gosnell who is starting at WR.
I think he means kenji Christian, the RB, not Benji
Alright too much internet for me today. I need to go study the roster.
