TKP 2022 NFL Survivor League - Week One

I'm proposing a weekly TKP NFL Survivor League for this football season.

Rules:
- Pick one team each week. If that team loses, you're out. If that team wins, you move on to the next week
- You can only pick each team once
- If you're the last one standing, you win
- If you haven't picked by the time the first game to be played that week has started (e.g. the Thursday night game, Bills at Rams, for week one), you can still pick, so long as you pick a game that hasn't started yet.
- Edit: Ties are considered not losing; players picking a team that ties will continue in the game

Reply to the first comment with your pick for this week. (That comment will contain "Week One Picks" in it.)
Picks outside a reply to the first comment, after this week, will not count. Please keep all discussion out of replies to the first comment.

I'll summarize the results after week one games are done.

Looks like there was a lot of carnage in week one. Of 27 entrants, 12 were eliminated, leaving a little over half (15) to move on to week two. (NOTE: If I'd decided to eliminate ties, we would only have 6 moving on to week two.)

I'll put up a week two thread later today or tomorrow.

Picks outside the "Week One Picks" thread do not count.

Maybe I'm anticipating more discussion than will actually take place, but I was hoping not to have to wade through any discussion to find picks. Next week, please make your pick under the "Week One Picks" comment in a reply to the first comment. Thanks.

"thread" vs "comment thread"/"subthread"/"comment" could be confusing in this context

"Why gobble gobble chumps asks such good questions, I will never know." - TheFifthFuller

Fair point, and I'll be lenient week one. What terminology would you prefer?

Asking because I have my own mental definition of thread vs comment thread, so am curious if my definitions conflict with others', and make this more confusing than it seems to me.

Uh... "Reply to the first comment with your pick"

And then you make the first comment "reply to this comment with your pick"

Sorry about that

I do art stuff.

No, discussion is fine, just not as a reply (or reply to a reply) to the first comment in the thread. I worded that weirdly and have since clarified.

Discuss away.

These are fun. Last time I did this in 2019, it was down to two of us, me and the XO, for like 3 straight weeks, until I picked the Browns over his Steelers. That was the Myles Garret helmet swing game.

I just got into one that a friend of mine runs, 200 bucks to enter and there are usually around 200 people for a 40k pay out. Definitely will be paying more attention to NFL this year, at least until I get knocked out.

I hope it is not week one. I've had that happen to me a few times. I picked the Ravens over Raiders last year week one. lol

Just so you all know, picking the Colts isn't as much of a slam dunk as you think. They haven't won a Week 1 game in like 8 years 🤣 As a Colts fan, I know to count Week 1 and whenever we play Jacksonville on the road as losses

So.....how do ties work

Gotta pick a winner.....didn't win....you're out in my book.

Should be a push. Just like gambling.

If you Google elimination pool rules, usually a tie means you are out. LIttle Bobby Tables would have to make the decision though, as he set this up.

Yeah typically it's win and move on, anything else is out. but we'll leave it to LBT.

Rules do say "If you lose you are out" not "if you win you move on" sooooooo

The rule actually literally does in fact say that sooooooooooo

I should have addressed ties, and I'll consider that an oversight that will be fixed next year. For this year, though, I'll keep the rules the way they are. "If you lose you are out". I'll make it clear in the main post.

Each game like a battle. The two teams clash, one is killed, and the victor moves on. A tie is like both sides retreated, but still live to see the day.

Saved by the rules!

I did a straw poll around work, and that's how it ended up. But one submission was to just flip a coin for the game. My counter to that was to flip a coin for each person that picked a team that ended in a tie.

That could've been fun. ;^)

you are a merciful king

not that there are a lot of ties around the NFL (almost had two yesterday tho) but maybe a one week mulligan on the rule instead of a whole year?

"Why gobble gobble chumps asks such good questions, I will never know." - TheFifthFuller

I get the sentiment behind this but I could also see how someone who actually picked a winner this week could be upset if they pick a team that ties in week 4, lets say, and they get eliminated but someone like me (who benefits from picking a tie in week 1) gets to keep playing because my pick happened to win in week 4.

I think it's the right move to allow tie-picks to advance for the rest of the year. Alternatively, disallow them from advancing at all and screw everyone who picked it. I think it has to be all or nothing for this year and then make the rules more clear for subsequent seasons.

Onward and upward

It will be made more clear in future seasons, that's for sure. And it may not be what I decided this year. It could be rock-paper-scissors (best 3 of 5, of course) vs the commissioner. ;^)

And I think for this year (or any year), the right thing to do is to keep the same rules throughout the year.

That's fair -- i am all in favor of those who picked the colts getting ditched (since i didn't). but also don't see much value in continuing to make ties equal to wins if typically a tie is a loss in this kind of format. there is something to be said for uniform application across a whole season, though.

yep, exactly. I picked the Colts so with the decision that was made I definitely benefit. But regardless of whether the decision was to allow or disallow ties I think it needs to apply throughout the whole season. If the decision would have been to disallow it and thus eliminate me I'd be at peace with that so long as ties were considered losses throughout.

Onward and upward

Same here. I would love to continue, but if I was out I couldn't complain either. Either way, the colts are crossed off this season for me.

Shit...I'm out anyway....fucking titans can't make a 30 yard field goal.....
