But I must say I'm disappointed they let BC climb to within 25 yards of their season high in rushing. They are going to need to play better against the run to do well this season. /SSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS
Reminded me of the old Duke games where we would drink whenever they crossed the 50. Way to go D!!!!!!

After last week, I'm sure most of us on this site had a pit in our stomach when Boston College scored to make it 17-10. But to see the team rally together and not make the mistakes they made last week, and settle back into their defensive groove was amazing.
Wells in the second half impressed me a bit with his maturity. The deep ball to Smith, the touchdown pass, and some of those late game throws to Blumrick were steps up from last week. I think he still has some happy feet, and he throws everything like Brett Favre trying to break some fingers, but I'm certainly encouraged.
My hope is the staff continues to allow him the space to make plays through the air, and gain that confidence and trust in his receivers.

This. This 100%. As soon as they scored the TD I thought we were done based on the last few years. Nothing against the boys, but we've seen in the past where one good opposing team drive sinks the morale like a stone and they fold. On Saturday they took a punch to the face, rallied, and punched back harder. It was great to see.
On another note, holy shit was that refereeing squad incompetent. They never even declared the BC TD an actual TD, just spotted the ball for the FG. Everyone in the stands was confused as hell.

They didn't call how many intentional grounding calls were the BC QB was heaving the ball desperately to avoid a sack? The one from the end zone that didn't make it past the line of scrimmage and there was nobody nearby was really bad.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
These plays reminded me again why I think the penalty for intentional grounding penalty should be loss of down and spot the ball 5 OR 10 YARDS behind the spot of the foul. With current rules, there is ZERO additional penalty for grounding vs. taking the sack. So basically the QB should ALWAYS hum the ball out of bounds when about to be sacked as he has nothing to lose but everything to gain.

my dad was saying that about not signalling the TD and the tv announcer was confused AF but i was watching and clearly saw the official on the pylon raise his hands after he was certain the receiver controlled the ball into the end zone. it was hella slow, but it was clear

I have to say, for as disappointed as I was to lose to ODU again last week, I am very encouraged by the defense's performance through two games in the Pry era. I hoped to see a vintage Tech defense under Pry, and through two games that's exactly what we've seen. All things considered, I'm happier than I ever could've expected to be after starting 1-1 including a loss to ODU.

I think the rest remains to be seen since the first two opponents weren't good, but I agree, for what we've seen so far, the defense is definitely a breathe of fresh air and reminds you of old VT defenses... Tackling, pursuit angles, speed to the ball, group tacking, pressure with only 3/4 D-lineman, etc... All of it was so much better than what we've seen from our defense in past 4-5 years

Something about this game make me reminiscent about the years I was on campus, 2005-2009. So much so I contacted old friends who I hasn't talked to in a while to say THIS IS AWESOME.
Our defense was uncompromising, our special teams locked in, our offense was ..... well they scored enough points. It's everything I love about us.

Gotta confess - we tuned in time for Enter Sandman - my last in person game was 2010 - I got unexpectedly emotional. These games were a big part of my family's life for many years including one member no longer here to see it. After so many lackluster seasons, this felt like the energy was back. I want a turkey leg now.

I know BC didn't play well, but VT looked a lot more like the team I remember. Solid D and better offense too. October is still gonna be rough, but with GT being terrible and seeing Illinois curb stomp UVA today... I feel more hopeful that we'll see a few Ws in season 1 of the Pry era.

Defense is good, but not truly tested yet. And shut-out should be the expectation against Wofford (scoreless in 2 games thus far).
Offense can be better, but showed signs of life. Wells had a few P5-level throws and was ultimately a good-enough game manager today. If he can get consistent with his passes, he'll win a game with his arm that VT is supposed to lose. He'll probably blow another game or two too. It's now clear there are 4 playmakers (King, Thomas, Smith, and Blumrick). If all four are healthy, this team will score points. Two or more injured, they'll struggle to maintain drives like today.

Pry begins to grow a Beard, and the win follows. Coincidence? We all know better than that.
Couldn't catch the game but I just watched the condensed version on YT. Absolutely EVIL defense, good lord. They swarmed. It's been way too long since I saw a QB get the fully dipped Terrordome treatment.
Grant Wells reminds me of Rex Grossman. He's gonna keep slingin' it, because...well, he just is. TD pass? Slingin' it. Incomplete and 4 or 5 yards wide of the WR? Slingin' it. Incomplete and way too hard and fast for the WR to get his hands up in time? Slingin' it. Interception? You already know. Slingin'. It. Results will vary.
Probably ought to keep the inside runs to a minimum, this OL just can't hack it. That 4th and 1 is the one that stands out, but there were other times too. King better be as 100% as he says he is.
Between Jurkovec and BC burning all their timeouts, they really showed their asses too. Won't miss em. Let the door hitcha where the dog bitcha.
Overall though, fuckin A it feels good to get a win at night in Blacksburg, Fam! Let the Beard Grow!

I was looking ahead to WVU with concern based on their playing Pitt tough last week and our loss to ODU.
Turns out, WVU lost to Kansas too and we looked kinda alright against a BC team that ... lost to Rutgers last week. Bah maybe I shouldn't think too hard.
Anyway, moving on:
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
I'm actually glad BC scored that TD. I feel better and the team must feel better after the offense was forced to respond. Makes it more of a team win, and that TD drive was impressive. Wells made some very very nice throws on that drive. And it seemed to give the defense some juice to come back out and start dominating again. Had the Offense gone 3-and-out, not sure the defense would've finished the way they did.
That was mostly a defensive victory last night. But King's run, that TD drive, Blumrick/Smith performance, plus 0 turnovers is enough to give the offense some much needed confidence moving forward.
Pry seems very focused on incremental improvement. Saw it across the board from ODU to BC game. Looking to see it each week. It may not be a great season, but it just feels like this staff knows how to develop players.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
I agree, I think it was important because, not only do we know that our offense can do that, they know it as well. A little confidence goes a long way.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
The defense is much better and the offense a little bit worse than I expected. But hey every season has its surprises. One thing I can say that gets me excited is we seem aggressive on both sides of the ball. Lots of blitzing on defense and lots of interesting formations on the offense and going for it on 4th down. I'm not totally sure what to make of the latter but it was entertaining at least. We didn't just run a QB design run 20 times in a row or whatever. There's signs of life even if they haven't found an identity yet.

It looks like we have closing speed on defense. Not insane Georgia speed, but solid tackling, close the deal speed. Outside of King, We need to improve to the same level some playmaking speed on offense.
Great team win for Pry.

This is something we haven't seen for awhile now. There were multiple instances last night where the first defender missed but the second and third were right there smothering the ball handler. We were shedding our blocks and hawking to the ball carrier. I think it was in the 4th where Garbutt was pressuring Jerkovic and nearly got the sack, but he got the pass off to an open receiver and in two steps Strong done shed his block, closed in and cut him down for only a two yard gain. Plays like that have me pretty excited because they'll only get better as the season goes.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
The last time we finished in the top 10 in defense, we finished 103rd on offense was 2014. We went 7-6, but beat every ranked opponent on our schedule.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
This was probably said in another thread, but after a good looking win this week our loss last week doesn't look as bad. 3 P5 teams lost to Sun Belt teams at home this week, 2 of them were ranked. We were a road team that was supposed to be bad anyways and lost on botched field goal snap.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
Thought it was worth nothing that the drive that led to a field goal appeared to start with a lot of backups on the field, that was switched out after BC made a few first downs. Artis and Tisdale I think we're on the field together with some other backups, then Dax and Keller came back in. I think being able to sneak in some meaningful snaps for depth in the 1st half was great, even if it led to BC scoring their first points.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
Either that or they botched the broadcast (possible). They were rotating so heavily at one point it was hard to keep track, especially since some players have new numbers this season
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
So, I have to say it. I haven't seen the fire in the eyes of the defense for 6-8 years now. This defensive squad, though lacking talent in some areas, is flying around, MAKING FORM TACKLES, and getting to the ball in a hurry. I can't imagine how that unit will evolve over the next couple of seasons.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
The improvement in tackling from last year is both impressive and extremely encouraging. I think the sooner Pry feels comfortable being hands off with the defense, especially during a game, the better. The offense needs a lot of TLC.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
I'm actually a little concerned about that eventuality. Pry I feel has more than proven himself to be a very good DC based on his Penn State stint and what i've seen so far here. But I wonder how Marve will be when he takes over those responsibilities in a season or two. Would be frustrating if we get another Cornelson situation where we have someone who's clearly unprepared for the role hang on to the position for far too long.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
People are worried that we will keep Marve and Bowen if they are horrible b/c of the last crew.....I don't think we have to worry about that with Pry.
First he reportedly told some coaches who wanted to come that it wasn't the right fit for them. Second he doesn't have a "Marve and Bowen were my first men at my wedding...." like Fuente did with Cornelson.
I have a friend that coached with Fu and Corn and I asked if he thought Fu would ever get rid of Corn. He said "Never. They were best men at each others weddings". Pry doesn't have that kind of deep connection with people who work for him, which is good.
I think if Pry needs to replace someone he will. He knows how the last staff was.

Trying to avoid the yo yo emotional responses, but man was it good to get a home W last night. Saw several players at the Hotel Roanoke, hit up Champs for lunch, my App State Boys took down ATM, the weather cooperated, wifi was modestly improved in lane, had a blast in downtown Roanoke late night, and Sunday brunch this morning. Hell of a 24 hours.
Now for an observation I hope doesn't jinx us. This staff has the approach of the Hokies of old. I can just feel it in my bones. One thing about new coaches and early season is that you expect the defense to be a little ahead of the offense. If our defense can keep playing near this level and the offense shows incremental improvement, we may just be able to put together a respectable season. WVU and UNC looking very beatable. Miami and NC State not looking like world beaters.
Let's go!

Our guys looked better last night than I expected them to look at any time this season. There's a lot of football left and I'm still not convinced we'll make it to bowl eligibility this year, but just one game like that gives me real hope for the future and faith in Brent Pry.
PS Shouldn't we dub something the "Pry Bar" this year? We've got the lunchpail, what's the pry bar?
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
Yeah, I'd like to see a renewed interest in dominant special teams.
I don't know how I feel about the "Pry Bar" as a prop, though. It's a bit presumptuous. That said, I'm supporting any moves toward bringing back Beamer Ball.

I actually attended for the first time in several years. Even longer since I've been in East stands. I expect language and drinking, but when did everyone start throwing their trash down the stands? Nothing like getting pegged in the back of your head with a beer can by your fellow fans. And it was pretty constant. Enjoyed the game, but disappointed that some of our fans act like that. I had considered taking one of my kids and I'm glad I didn't. I guess I'll only do that on Alumni side. Is it better there I'd hope?

Good win. Lane was rocking and the attendance and energy really surprised me, particularly with the forecast. Gotta keep that up.
On a side note, I was asked by someone two rows behind me in the SEZ if I would sit down sometime in the first quarter. This was followed up with asking me if those were my seats all season and would I be attending most of the games. I made it a point not to stand up again until King scored on his long run, at which point I turned around and asked if it was ok to stand up.

Defense gave up 155 total yards and 62 of that on one drive. That will win a lot of games.

Beamerball is back just without the Beamer

It's the FAM thread, could we squeeze a Jurkovic in here, too?!
4 yards rushing! Welcome back LPD!!!
But I must say I'm disappointed they let BC climb to within 25 yards of their season high in rushing. They are going to need to play better against the run to do well this season. /SSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS

Oh we'd drink when they didn't make the 50 too
We beat a bad team. But we won convincingly. Things are moving in the right direction. Keep improving every game and we're going to a bowl.
This is an excellent point. During the Fuente years, we did beat bad teams, but very pathetically and unconvincingly.
It is great to see the defense back. Now let's see if Pry can build an offense to complement the defense.
After last week, I'm sure most of us on this site had a pit in our stomach when Boston College scored to make it 17-10. But to see the team rally together and not make the mistakes they made last week, and settle back into their defensive groove was amazing.

Fix the problems, work on special teams, keep honing that defense, keep recruiting for next year.
All aboard the hype train.
I like beating bad teams way better than losing to them.
Or any team, for that matter.
But I guess you're talking about so far this year.
I like defense FAM.

Dang Richt just said he didn't know why Hooker wasn't still at tech and would be an improvement.
I mean, with a QB, we win that one by 40.
Need an O line first, then QB. But I'd love to have Hooker back.
You never know for sure, but if Hooker never leaves VT for Tennessee, my guess is Fuente is still probably the coach at Virginia Tech.
As much as it sucked to lose him, it might have been for the best in the long run.
No. He still gets fired, because he wasn't going to play Hooker.
Yeah he was. He just didn't know it yet.
Hokie Club got me while I'm drinking again....it's like they know

You forgot Wisconsin. But I'm glad to see aTm lose - I'm becoming a fairweather App St fan. And I did want ND to win.
Also I think Saban knew it was good business to let Texas think they were going to win, then decide to win in the last 90 seconds.
15 penalties in the first half. Saban can't coach, fire the bum!
Faaaaam!!

Good to see Pry address the mistakes from last week.
Go Hokies!
Pry took accountability for any mistakes in the postgame presser. Blumrick is a very good TE. Garbutt and Dax look great. It'sjustnicetowinone.gif FAM
Dax looks like a different player this year, he has been really good these two games.

I, for one, am not sorry to see it go.
Fuck Matt Ryan
So say we all.
Agreed
Good fuckin riddance
Hopefully I can go the rest of my life without ever seeing highlights from that fucking comeback win by BC ever again. Ever.
FAM!
This felt like a classic 2000s Tech game. Dax played his ass off and I hope Kings injury isn't bad. Is Blumrick going to be an X factor for us?
I hope we can get more creative on offense but that also may be a product of our limited depth
Did someone say X factor?
Those jerseys were 🔥 🔥
It was so nice to see defensive players making the tackles in front of them again and not bouncing off and surrendering another 10 yds. Defense has in lockdown mode and the rain held off until late. Offense has work to do, but a kicker made a 49 yarder!
Yeah, and again, it was straight down the middle.
Looks to me like we know we have LB's, a FG kicker and King.
Lets lock down more spots.
It may be too early for this but, Great Britain may have lost a queen. good thing we found our King last week.
What's I say.
Can't go 12-1 without winning 1 and losing 1.
It's was nice to see our Team get a "W" Fam!
Pry said on postgame that we had close to 140 recruits there. Support staff FAM.
As a defensive recruit how can you not want to play in this defense
As an offensive recruit how can you not think you could start next year
Coach Pry just admitted to knowing the fans were calling for the beard despite what his wife thought about it 😂
So he truly is the Peoples Champion
My spouse looks far better clean-shaven, but rocking a full beard atm.. if it makes him happy...
Pry looks good with the Indiana Jones 3-day scruff, very lunch pail. Full beard, more like your US History professor.
I would not be opposed if Pry started every season clean shaven and didn't shave until after the final game.
He can call it his "Playoff Beard" and can use it to remind his players what the team's/program's end goal is.
ACC Championships --> Playoffs
Fans can also really behind him and wear fake beards to games.
Whatever he thinks helps him win.
I think we have definitively proven that it helps.
Last Tech Talk Live Pry mentioned he does no shave November. So full beard Pry for UVA.

Fam...and we are tackling so much better!
Fam!!! We are working out the kinks. Defense looked good. It was so good to be back in Lane. And it was not a monsoon.
FAM! I've got not voice now trying to keep up with the defense. Great night in Lane tonight.
FAM!!
Defense has some swagger back!
This win made me look up Emma GIFs, FAM
Dork magic is making a comeback!
Look this is obviously a repeat of 2010. Lose to a much lesser in state program then go ahead and win the ACC!
I accept these terms on Hokie Nation's behalf.
LPD is back!
Still a ways to go, but Hokies show a sign of life.
Congrats to Pry, the staff, and the players!

MORNING AFTER FAM
I figured Wells slinging it would result in something like 275 yds 3TD 2INT every week
it might one of these weeks, who knows
I was looking ahead to WVU with concern based on their playing Pitt tough last week and our loss to ODU.
Turns out, WVU lost to Kansas too and we looked kinda alright against a BC team that ... lost to Rutgers last week. Bah maybe I shouldn't think too hard.
Anyway, moving on:
Lance Leipold is starting to turn Kansas around... They're not a walk over. I'm def a little worried about WVU, especially after a short week.
On the other hand, this defense with a night game in lane 😋
Stifling defense, frustrating offense
I would accept 2010 results.
The big thing just seems to be a remarkably different attitude on the field and the sidelines.
The players on defense contested every yard. Tackling was phenomenal.
Angles were spot on.
Only thing that is a concern is the deep ball. Numerous times we were beat deepand the QB just over threw his man.
A better OL and a better QB will eventually burn us. To what end is unknown.
But
But
1-0 in ACC play
FAM!
This has shades of the 2008 season, where we somehow made it to the ACC title game, and had an anemic offense.
Here's to hoping Pry can keep building momentum into the next few weeks!
They scored their touchdown and I thought "well we're screwed". Offense marches down. Defense tightens back up great response
I agree, I think it was important because, not only do we know that our offense can do that, they know it as well. A little confidence goes a long way.
Garbutt looked like a top 10 pick last night. BC couldn't block him.
Hopefully Pry's got Hardee's coupons ready to hand out to WRs in the portal this offseason.
That's the good stuff.
Another!
Finally getting back some of my voice. We were loud and proud, screaming our nut bags off for the defense like the days of old. FAM, that was fun.
Good work. Seems to have had the proper effect on the game results.
Take away the ODU special teams TD off the muffed FG attempt, and we've given up the tied for 4th fewest points in the ACC. (23)
#1 is Miami, who played Bethune Cookman (20)
#2 is Syracuse, who played UCONN (21)
#3 is Clemson, who played Furman and GT
ESPN has already updated their FPI efficiencies.
Defense #10
Offense #109
EDIT: Broken link up top. This one works.
But what is our FPI effectiveness
The last time we finished in the top 10 in defense, we finished 103rd on offense was 2014. We went 7-6, but beat every ranked opponent on our schedule.
This was probably said in another thread, but after a good looking win this week our loss last week doesn't look as bad. 3 P5 teams lost to Sun Belt teams at home this week, 2 of them were ranked. We were a road team that was supposed to be bad anyways and lost on botched field goal snap.
Tisdale was back?
Either that or they botched the broadcast (possible). They were rotating so heavily at one point it was hard to keep track, especially since some players have new numbers this season
The improvement in tackling from last year is both impressive and extremely encouraging. I think the sooner Pry feels comfortable being hands off with the defense, especially during a game, the better. The offense needs a lot of TLC.
I was skeptical coming into the season but JC's guys playing very well up front
I'm actually a little concerned about that eventuality. Pry I feel has more than proven himself to be a very good DC based on his Penn State stint and what i've seen so far here. But I wonder how Marve will be when he takes over those responsibilities in a season or two. Would be frustrating if we get another Cornelson situation where we have someone who's clearly unprepared for the role hang on to the position for far too long.
Given that he's a very good DC, it sounds like Pry is the right guy to make that assessment.
First win of many for Coach Pry at VT.
How very fitting....VT beats BC and FMR Falcons lose today for a nice thick layer of fondant on the cake.
I think you mean the Colts end in a tie.
Nope. The Fuck Matt Ryan Falcons lost to the Saints today. Made me smile.
Edit: Lord have mercy. Just shows how much I don't follow the NFL. Now, I'm not as happy about the Falcons losing but still smiling due to "Guilty By Association"
And......FMR.
Let's go!
Was there live to see coach Pry's first HOKIES head-coaching Victory! FAM!!!
And at the home opener!
I mentioned this before. Forced fumbles I think would fit well.

Oh man, It's all yours, wasn't trying to steal anything 😲😂😂😂
And forced fumbles is perfect
Yeah, I'd like to see a renewed interest in dominant special teams.
I don't know how I feel about the "Pry Bar" as a prop, though. It's a bit presumptuous. That said, I'm supporting any moves toward bringing back Beamer Ball.
I've got orange and maroon paint and a bunch of boring, black demo tools.
Would this be TOTS?
FAM! WE GET A GIFTORY!!!
Thankfully the folks around our seats in section 31 also stand up for much of the game, so we don't get that complaint.
Because I missed it the other night - FAM!
Dax looks like an entirely different player now - same motor as always, but much more effective. An absolute manimal.
Yeah, Dax is ballin' right now. This is a great scheme for him.
FAM STICKS, BOYS!
GET THE W!
Grant Wells tried to kill a DB.
Taking bets now on how he'll do it.
Run them over or throw the ball through their facemask
