We were definitely lucky to get Tyrod. Pretty sure they were same class (if I'm not mistaken).
This made me smile though - https://www.tmz.com/2022/09/13/cam-newton-eli-manning-tim-gunn-team-colo...
Yea that's right. TMZ on Key Play... Has to be a first! :)

Saw Cam Newton & Tyrod at TOTS one year (sometime after 2011). Someone asked him he wanted a rail and he said "Shitttttttt, fuck that" lol.
I once asked a friend if he was gonna finish his rail. I was later told, my friend said no, and I could have it. I chugged that rail. Allegedly.
Still finished my senior design project lab the next day. Hungover, but it was done.
This is how you legend
after our last exam senior year a group of us went out and got hammered. A few of us had two rails, including me and my best friend. I also had at least 3 jello shots, split a pitcher of yuengling with another friend and that's all I can remember (but I'm told we went to at least 2 other spots and I was drinking the whole time). I'm one of those folks who usually gets really sick/hungover from drinking more than 6 beers (you might call that a lightweight) but on this particular occasion, for whatever reason that I can't explain, I neither got sick nor had a terrible hangover the following day. To this day, I cannot understand how, when a night like that would normally kill me (or make me wish I was dead), I managed to get out relatively unscathed. I have tried, and failed, to replicate that experience a few times since. It is my most epic drinking saga. And I'm certain that, at this point, I will never replicate it. C'est la vie.
My most epic drinking saga is the 'human pizza' incident and I hope to NEVER repeat that experience lol.
You have to tell us, or I'm just going to assume there was cannibalism or an orgy involved.
why not both dot gif
OK-a friend was in the Marching Virginians and invited us to the band fraternity party one Saturday evening. The drink of choice was grain lemonade. Now my friends and I usually tried to be (a little) responsible and mixed our 'jungle juice' at 15 parts lemonade to 1 part grain(yes this was when Everclear was 190 proof-so that kept it with a bit of a kick but not too bad). Unbeknownst to me they(the MVs) mixed THEIR grain punch at 5 parts lemonade to one part grain-quite a step up from what I was accustomed to.
I'm not absolutely positive how much I had but pretty sure it was 4-5 16 oz stadium cups full.
(Side note- I MISS stadium cups-not just for the cheap 'glassware' for our apartment/dorm room but also for the time during a blowout of Duke one Saturday afternoon (Damn i hope those come back soon) when the student side made a 'cup chain' over their heads that stretched from field level to the very top row 5P; not sure how many cups but since each cup only added 1/2-3/4 inch to the length it was thousands at a minimum. They held it for ten seconds then let it fly.)
Anyway... so basically in a bit over 90 minutes I pretty much drank 3/4 of a fifth of grain equivalent, and was three (or maybe 8-10) sheets to the wind, and my friend decided we should probably leave. BUT while guiding me out to leave, he stopped to chat with someone and I flopped down into a fold out couch and got sick. My friend got me up and we started to leave when he inexplicably stopped AGAIN to chat, and I repeated my performance in another couch. I'm a bit unclear whether it was another couch or that second one that I remained on, but apparently it was at that point that some other inebriated folks got involved and decided to "make a pizza'. They poured Prego spaghetti sauce or tomato sauce all over me, then grated parmesan cheese, and I believe some spaghetti noodles, then someone said "let's put him in the oven!' Thankfully someone else was a LITTLE bit more sober and replied "no,no-he's too big; he won't fit!"
I spent the night passed out on that couch and arose at 5 am to use the restroom. Finishing that chore, I went back to the living room, saw the couch and thought-"nope I ain't laying back down on THAT!." I looked around the room where 10-15 other folks were still passed out and thought "I PROBABLY shouldn't be here when they wake up." So at 6 am Sunday morning, I walked my drunk self the two plus miles from the frat house (off North Main near Progress Street) back to my fifth floor dorm room at Lee Hall. Somehow avoiding the attention of both Blacksburg and VT police as well as any other early risers. Upon opening my door, I walked forward two steps and passed out on the floor between the loft beds. My roommate who worked a breakfast shift at the ding hall jumped out of his loft and (fortunately for BOTH of us) saw me before he landed and split his feet around me.(otherwise would've probably kille me by a ruptred spleen, or broken his ankle or knee or both),
Epilogue- my friend in the band said the folks who 'pizza'd'' me got in trouble because I was a guest not a member(a member would have been fair game). And I learned a valuable lesson- KNOW how the drinks are being mixed- doesn't mean you can't drink 'em but KNOW what you're getting yourself into lol. nd that's the first time I've written down that story (always only verbally shared before but that was the 1980s so I THINK the statute of limitations has run out...IF NOT only Joe knows who I really am! and you never saw this)
That's a good story, my guy. The human pizza thing was a little immature. I'm glad the leadership made a point to not treat guests that way. My questions is which music frat? DO is more professional based and to my knowledge never had a house. It sounds like you wound up at the VTuba's grain party that they throw once a year. The times I went I had advanced knowledge of how they mixed the grain into the drinks from my girlfriend, now wife, who was a color guard member and honorary tuba, as she claims.
Wouldn't surprise me if that was it.(remember I had been drinking, lol). I know my friend was not tuba section himself, but told me that almost all (maybe all) of the bells of the tubas were full of liquor bottles at all the games he was involved in. Makes the precision the MVs display even more impressive imho.
Remember, every time you saw the tubas do the Hokie Pokie between the 3rd and 4th quarter in years past, almost all of them were either drunk or hungover, save for maybe a few that just didn't drink at all. It's a wonder none of them just fell over when dancing around.
As a former 80s MV that didn't join the frat, would agree with that assessment. Tubas were next level.
I thought it was open knowledge Auburn bought Cam for like $200K. I'm very skeptical that we were ever seriously considered.
Wholeheartedly agree on the color combo, though. I was just thinking last night about how our uniforms seem like they're designed and selected by people who are embarrassed that our colors are maroon and orange and feel hamstrung by the color palette. Wish we'd use both colors more.
Cam Newton signed with Florida out of high school. That's when he said he was considering VT. He didn't go to Auburn until after he went the JUCO route.
That's right, my mistake.
You just lowkey insulted a significant portion of our fanbase, and I'm here for it. The amount of people who think orange should be a trim color only and outwardly refuse to accept it as a primary part of the palate is equal parts sad and hilarious. Our colors are maroon and orange, not maroon and white.
The problem with being equal is that a jersey that is 50% maroon and 50% orange would probably look strange.
The reason that orange should be a trim color is that on TV maroon looks so much better and when you where all orange we just look like half the conference, playing Cuse or Clemson or UVA wearing mainly orange just sucks. Though thinking about it, wearing orange when we play BC and FSU makes sense. I mean there was atleast 1 sack last weekend where I was like shiiit, but then I realized I mixed up the colors. I think it was that Dax blitz too. So I really don't know what my argument is but yeah!
At a certain point, who gives a shit. Orange is one of our colors, own it. I highly doubt NCSU cares about looking like Louisville or Georgia when they are wearing their red or black jerseys, so why do we care about orange. We're the only major college with orange and maroon as our template, we should absolutely own and embrace it.
I think we have a unique color combination and to look like half the conference just seems like we aren't dressing to our fullest potential.
50% blaze orange and 50% purple maroon would look strange. Our colors should be the burnt orange and chicago maroon of the leaves in the fall - which look awesome together.
100% yes on our colors, I painted rooms in my house based on VTs colors and then they just don't use them for sports, you're letting me down VT.
Yes and no.
While Chicago Maroon and Burnt Orange are our colors, Virginia Tech officially changed our school colors to include that more vibrant orange in 2016, and this is our official license now:
I'm in the forever Pantone 7428c and Pantone 173c gang!
True, but even more stupid than going with the swishy VT. IMO The branding should reflect the hard working dependable character the school was build on, and not blow in the wind to change to try to do the same thing as everyone else to appeal to the next generation. Be who we are and be proud of it, and we will attract people of character. Fuck I am old...... And no, I am not equally upset we no longer have only the original cadet grey and black or condensed VPI&SU to VT. I am not that old......
For the record, there is a Page 2 for the athletic branding, but that page didn't include the submission on the colors.....
The colors on the two pages do not match.
PMS208
PMS 158 and 208 were the orange and maroon we used since the early 90s rebrand that a former colleague was the AD for. After years of designing for VT they are forever etched in my brain. The maroon shift satisfied people that thought the old maroon (201) was too close to blood (really). It was actually very close to FSUs maroon.
Going full pedantic: Chicago Maroon and Burnt Orange are not what the team is wearing regardless, and I hate it.
I'm still pissed they took Home of the Fighting Gobblers off the side of the stadium.
And don't get me or TKP started about taking away Stick It In!
Will never forget my spring break high school senior trip to check out Tech. Mom and I had no idea what a Hokie was before we got to the area. As we were driving past the stadium, we saw "Home of the Fighting Gobblers." We stopped right in the middle of the road looking up and turned to each other and said "They're turkey's."
Ahem, that's anthropomorphic turkey-like creature!
My HS mascot was also a bird. I graduated to a much larger bird, haha. A lot of my family are alums when it was still military. My late uncle had a scar on his leg where he got spurred by the live turkey mascot they had at the time (40s) as he was marching in the halftime band show. My family always told me that was the end of a fighting gobbler on the field, but the pr lore was gobblers were what our team did at the training table.
I'm with you there, brother. So when Lane's facade was replaced, we removed "Home of the Fighting Gobblers"? Where did it go? What other schools can have that on their stadium? I'm all about Hokie this and Hokie that, but that's our history and it's one of a kind. Any other Fighting Gobblers out there? I don't think so. We should have embraced that moniker by returning it to the stadium facade or area of the stadium in some capacity. Just my opinion, and I'm an old guy, but that really doesn't have anything to do with it.
Hey, get off my lawn!
In case you're serious - West Side concourse above the team store. Its easy to miss, but its there.
I'm not going to say that the Maroon and Orange color combo is perfect, but by god I will wear it to my dying day insisting that it's the best damn color scheme around.
I generally find locating primary orange Hokie gear very difficult. I had to buy an official Nike polo used simply because it was the only orange polo I've ever seen. I also had difficulty finding Nike DriFit short or long sleeve shirts at the bookstores and did get lucky one year and scooped them both on the spot.
The orange garb is my favorite Hokie gear by far. Orange pops and grabs everyone's attention. I do wish our orange reflected more of the burnt orange on TV, but I'm all for wearing orange unis during day/afternoon games. Maroon should be reserved for night games though, it just looks daunting on TV when our defense is swarming.
To be fair, I am finding it almost impossible to get any kind of Nike gear impossible anymore. Its like they've completely given up on selling VT merchandise.
Speaking of which, Nike Air Zooms just released.
Guess which schools are included? UNC, Kentucky, West Virginia
Guess which school isn't? Virginia Tech
Whats most egregious about this is that the Air Zoom brand used to be the Air Vick Zoom until MV7 had his legal troubles, so this would be like Nike not including UNC in the Jordan brand merch.
Bought these as my go to VT reppin' shoes.
Those are some expensive shoes just for reppin'. That said, I love the On shoes (Cloudswift) that I wear almost daily.
I'm a bit OCD, so those only see the light of day on football or bball game days where I'm at the office or at an event where I feel confident I won't go on a bender, get obliterated, and get them filthy.
They should last forever.
yep- nike is never going to make these for us. for whatever reason
I totally agree. The women's basketball coaches had a great athletic 1/4 zip they wore a lot last season. Can't find it for sale anywhere. We looked online and in 3 different stores in Blacksburg - never saw it. Very frustrating how hard it is to find orange polos or athletic wear.
I got desperate last year looking for a gray hoodie that I saw Khalil Herbert wearing at Bears camp. I couldn't find it anywhere and I wanted it and was hoping I'd get lucky and he'd hit me up.
Gotta do what ODU did and just steal it from the locker room.
The vast majority of what you see coaches and players wearing is never sold to the public for any school. The gear has tags that say something like, "on-field edition" (I forget the exact wording).
If you see something you like you can check out ebay. VT and any other schools donates surplus items to a non-profit organization that sells stuff on ebay. Some of the gear is used, but it is often brand new. I have picked up $85 Nike jackets for $29.99 with the tags still on.
All that being said, Nike continues to fuck us year after year and I don't see us suddenly growing a set and doing something about it anytime soon.
It just feels like a bad business decision to showcase apparel on TV like that and then not make it available to the general public. I'm pretty sure (not positive) that you can buy all the stuff that they make for NFL teams to wear on the sidelines, and they always end up doing special edition stuff (for better or worse) to pump up those sales.
A lot of the surplus equipment, workout stuff etc goes on the Virginia Tech Surplus Auctions.
Yep- TCU, Ok State, UVA, WVU all get the new Nike shoes for consumers. VT never gets those. I heard a story from years ago that our marketing licensing is "unique"., antiquated, and difficult and Nike didn't want to jump through the hoops? I think now its more that we have a bargain basement deal and Nike doesn't have to invest/doesn't have new gear clauses like Michigan and Texas have, etc. end of the day- our apparel deal is the worst in the P5 with no exaggeration.
I'm now imagining that 2011 team.
Cam Newton, LT3, David Wilson, Jarrett Boykin, Danny Coale
Newton basically won the Natty by himself so he could've easily done it in he ACC
How does Cam get the 5th year of eligibility in this scenario?
Ok, make it 2010 and give him RMFW too
In all seriousness you'd be crazy to think we wouldn't have wanted Cam here. Literal heisman winner. Imagine also if Cam played QB and Logan Thomas was able to play his natural position of TE (I might get some flack for saying that is his natural position but I think it has been proven out over time given that's what he plays now).
We would have had a Heisman winner if the stuffed shirts hadn't said they refused to give it to Vick because he was a redshirt freshman. Then they changed their minds later and started awarding to freshmen.
Absolutely! Add this to the list of things I will go to my grave believing.
If Cam was in the 2006 or 2008 class, we would have taken him in a heartbeat. Unfortunately Cam was 2007 and in the same class as Tyrod, who was considered the #1 dual threat QB (Cam was #2) and was in our backyard. there's no way we would've been able to get both.
I am totally happy with how it all worked out to be honest.
The big dawgs do it all the time, but I hear you. In any case, I was more thinking of when he was doing the JUCO transfer. I honestly believe that 2011 team could have been national title caliber had Tyrod been able to stick around another year. It's especially sad that was the final year of consecutive 10+ win seasons in the Beamer era.
Tyrod is my favorite Hokie player of all time. A natty would have been nice, but I can live with all the great moments that dude gave us.
In 09 my bachelor party started with watching Nebraska in Lane. Tyrod started that day off right.
Holy clickbait....
agreed, i'll update the title in accordance with CGs
#BooThisMan
Sorry about that! Saw the article and posted quickly on my phone.
But what does he think about shoulder stripes?
Cam Newton factors for school decision (ranked in order of importance):
1) Bagman $$
.
.
.
12) Uniform colors
Speaking of jerseys, when is our Nike deal done? I search and saw comments saying 6/30/22, so shouldn't we be hearing about a new deal soon?
Actually had to look it up.
Bitter commented on a 247 thread that it got a 1 year extension where we got a little more money out of it while we try and figure out the long term play here.
Which is interesting, because given the Pry era and a new contract coming, I wonder if we're due for a massive rebrand and/or overhaul of the entire athletic department next year. That same thread put out a theory that the attempted rebrand with the dopey Hokiebird logo was Nike trying to do something nice for us after effectively getting one in on Whit with the 10 year extension that was agreed upon before he took the reigns from Weaver. Who knows, but that could be plausible if our administration is as unhappy with our apparel contract as we are.
I have a feeling we will totally rebrand our jerseys next year. I'm hoping we do something like an update of the 99 unis or the mid 2000s era jerseys minus the piping. I do like that we went back to the solid maroon helmets and got rid of the tapered stripe for this season as some small gesture of change. These current unis have never quite felt right to me, the weird huge orange collar and white stripes on the shoulders just don't really do it IMO. The 99 throwbacks last year were fantastic. If we could just do something clean like that it would look great, maybe even have orange alternates of those.
Whit is publicly on record stating that we need nike more than they need us and they bring more value than "dollars" - great negotiating ploy. good luck getting a better deal whit.
That should be abundantly obvious... we aren't some premier brand, let's be honest with ourselves, and Nike is the top brand/product in its field.
That said, we still have plenty of negotiating room to move up from a bottom tier deal with Nike to a much more fair arrangement.
