Hey fellow TKPers,
I know a lot of you have voiced that you want to be more involved with the Hokie Effect football shirts. Well the design contest is now up and running. Also, as the director of the program, I would love to hear input of any ideas/suggestions you would like to see for future shirts. I want to make the shirts the best they can be and I want to include items that you guys want to see. The rules to the contest are as follows:
WINNERS RECEIVE $300.00 EACH
Maroon Effect shirt (long sleeve) must incorporate "Tough as the stone that built us" in the design.
Orange Effect shirt (short sleeve) must incorporate "Law of the Lane" in the design.
Ink colors must be maroon, orange, white, and black (if necessary).
Official pantone colors are PMS 208 (Chicago maroon) and PMS 158 (burnt orange).
All submissions are due by Friday, February 14th at 5 PM.
Email all submissions to clomaka@vt.edu
Good Luck! Go Hokies!

I know we have a few graphic designers on here. Here is a great opportunity!
Will Billdozer get screwed again? Important questions.
I have 0 connection to that incident. If he submits the best design, I would happily choose it.
Ah, someone that is upfront about things. It's refreshing.
How about an olive branch? Can you have another video contest so that he can actually win this time? Don't worry. He will.
The video contest you are referring to was run solely by the Virginia Tech Athletic Department. They were responsible for picking the winner of that contest.
As for picking the winner of the shirt design contest - I will take every name out of the submissions. I will just be looking at the designs, so I have no sense of who designed it. After the winning design is picked, I will then go look up who drew it and announce them.
No worries man. I was just joking.
But now that you brought it up, which department do you work from?
The Hokie Effect program is a part of Student Government Association
We support you and thanks for the detail.
If there is anything we can do to help you or your organization. Drop by here and let us know.
There's a lot of people here that would love to be involved somehow but have no idea where to go or do.
Go Hokies.
Agreed. I bought doubles of all three effect shirts for last season. Please let us know how we can help beyond the post here.
Absolutely, thank you all for supporting the Hokie Effect program. The sense of community on this website is second to none
I should start buying multiple pairs too since I wear through them so fast. Do you have the templates for the old shirts? Ive worn my older effect shirts too much and theyre falling apart
The only templates I have access to are the 2012 and 13 ones. If enough people want copies of the older shirts that is something that could possibly be explored down the road.
Went I went to get mine, they were out of my size so, I never even got the opportunity to purchase mine.
I'd definitely like to buy some.
I really want a 2007 Maroon effect Shirt! Best one ever!
I just want us to play like that again.
I got a couple of those. Junior year at tech. Love that shirt and agree. Best one
i always wanted one of those 'time to go to work' shirts with the lunchpail on them. i think they're not just a good orange effect shirt but a classic virginia tech shirt period, and they were only produced that season. you guys should bring that one back.
Both my dad and I wear that shirt all the time when doing housework or something like that, only problem is now it is just a plain orange shirt from fading in the wash.
I personally like the "Audible" maroon effect shirt..that and the Clipboard are my two favorites by a long long way
I think the ability to purchase some of the older shirts for an escalated price would be a potential gold mine for the SGA. Don't know if that is possible or not but I'd love to buy another set of my freshman year's shirts.
Thanks for the link!
I'm definitely submitting something. I'll post here first to get feedback.
To anyone still interested, only 1 week and 6 days left in the design contest!
Something to keep in mind during the design/selection, as someone assigned to Upstate NY, the 2011 shirt is easily mistaken for a Syracuse shirt. I know orange was the theme, but consider giving "Virginia Tech" or that touch of Maroon a more prominent space on the front.
I will take that into consideration. Thanks for the share!
Think i've done it.
Maroon effect:

"Tough as the stone that built us"- Implied implicitly, because maroon brings fear to every opponent.
Orange Effect:

"Law of Lane"- Pretty obvious that the law of Lane, or our home stadium, is to wear maroon.
Ill prob just donate the 600 bucks to this site, so we can keep making it better.
That was at our whiteout game and I still had to wear my maroon jacket.
Haha that is great. Believe me, I would love #ALLMAROONEVERYTHING
"Tough as the stone that built us"
i like it, i like it a lot.
Way to go to The Key Play creators and staff! came a long way since I became a member. You have coach S Beamer's fam wearing "BEAT BAMA" shirts. Now people at VT are targeting your audience for this kind of contest. Y'all made it, an applause must be made. BAM!
I understand the alternating orange and maroon long and short sleeve to give some variety to our wardrobe.
But by the time the long sleeve Effect game comes around, it's colder, and extra layers are required. Most of the Hokies I know tend to have predominately maroon colored outerwear. So, when the Orange Effect is a long sleeved deal, and on a cold night game, I don't think it really works out as well. But when it's a long sleeve Maroon Effect, it's more monochromatic in the stadium.
Plus, I usually reserve the orange shirts for the earlier, warmer games, and save maroon for when it gets colder. That's why I liked the old short orange/long maroon combo that we only get in even years.
(As a side note, has anyone else noticed that it seems to rain a lot on Whiteout games, so the stadium ends up rainbow colored?)
I always enjoyed the rainy white out games that weren't rainbow colored, at least in the North Endzone...
I have the solution. When Orange Effect rolls around, everyone buys a shirt three sizes larger than normal and wears it outside all of their layers. Result: Lane Stadium is full of screaming, key shaking, orange Michelin men/women.

Or... man up, get a nice brew jacket going and wear fewer layers.
Or buy an orange Jacket.
Or drink AND wear an orange jacket!

Yeah I definitely understand that. Hopefully this year it will work well with Maroon Effect being long sleeve
I'm going to say something that many people probably won't like, but it's just what logically makes sense. Maroon effect should not be the night game. There...it's out there now. You can't see just how full the stadium is when everyone is in a dark shirt. Orange effect under the lights looks GREAT when everybody buys in. Hell, orange effect in the afternoon looks great when everyone buys in. The only thing that ruins the orange effect is when the team wears orange jerseys. I love our team in Maroon, but I'm more of a fan of seeing the stadium full of orange.
I agree that the Orange Effect looks better at night. The thing is that it mostly depends on which shirt is long sleeve. This is because the night games are colder so long sleeves would most likely have to be worn.
Solution...Orange effect is always the night game.
Solution #2 every game is a night game. That way it's guaranteed that BOTH effect games are night games!
I would love to see us stripe the stadium like this. It would take a whole lot planning, but would look amazing.

not really but they would have to give out a whole bunch of free shirts
I just wish they gave out free shirts for the effect games. No offense Chris Lomaka, but in order to turn the entire stadium one color, we need to give out shirts. Get sponsorships from every place in Blacksburg if you have to, but it's the only way to make it work.
None taken. I realize that it is difficult for everyone to purchase the shirts. That is why the prices are kept low in order maximize the "Hokie Effect." But I appreciate your input, it will be taken into consideration. That is partially why I posted on TKP; to hear suggestions or ideas fans might have.
Ehhh I don't know how I feel about the striping. I'd rather just have the whole stadium in one solid color.
WVU did the same thing. Hokie Rule #1: Don't be like WVU.

It may just be me, but this looks like a mouth missing teeth. Which is a GREAT representation of WVU.
I know it'll bring up bad memories, but Boise State does it too...
Are we supposed to do it because they do, or not do it because they do? I'm confused but I think it should be the second one.
+1 for using a Kinnick stadium shot!
I'm no graphic designer so I won't have a submission, but I feel like any shirt with the slogan "Tough as the stone that built us" should have one of the following:
-Logan Thomas carrying the entire UCLA secondary
-AJ Hughes' forced fumble against Miami
-or this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fsd5Do20tDw&t=0m48s
Unfortunately due to NCAA and university rules, no design or slogan can incorporate a player.
It can't reference a specific player or just have players at all? I mean, could it have the image of a football player without specific reference to a particular player (no jersey number or anything)? If that player "happened" to be carrying four defenders on his back just like LT3 in the sun bowl would that be a violation?
Is this just open to students or avail for fans as well?
Designs from all will be considered
No offense but, I just feel like everyone is going to submit the same design for "tough as the stone that built us." It is pretty obvious that a horse on a treadmill fits just perfectly.
Has their ever been a horse on a treadmill effect shirt? It's grown to be a pretty big cult following.
(Assuming they should just buy all the TKP shirts)
I apologize for the constant updates, trying to keep those interested informed. Just 4 more days until the design contest ends!
